In this paper, we construct an intermediate distribution linking the Gaussian and the Cauchy distribution. We provide the probability density function and the corresponding characteristic function of the intermediate distribution. Because many kinds of distributions have no moment, we introduce weighted moments. Specifically, we consider weighted moments under two types of weighted functions: the cut-off function and the exponential function. Through these two types of weighted functions, we can obtain weighted moments for almost all distributions. We consider an application of the probability density function of the intermediate distribution on the spectral line broadening in laser theory. Moreover, we utilize the intermediate distribution to the problem of the stock market return in quantitative finance.

The double Pareto-positive stable (dPPS) distribution is introduced as a new model for describing countries’ global current account balance data. The dPPS distribution provides a flexible model for fitting the entire range of a set of current account data (both surplus and deficit), where zero and unimodality are possible, and the double-sided Pareto distribution is included as a particular case. Expressions for the cumulative distribution, probability density and quantile functions are given. An estimation method is discussed and a simple graphical method for studying the adequacy of the data to model is given. Finally, we consider the fit of countries’ global current account balance data for several years. The new distribution is compared with four classical models: Normal, Skew Normal, Asymmetric Laplace and Hyperbolic distributions. In all the data sets considered, the dPPS distribution outperforms the fits of these four distributions.

The quantitative impact of NLO-QCD corrections for searches of large and warped extra dimensions at hadron colliders are investigated
for the Drell-Yan process. The K-factor for various observables at hadron colliders are presented. Factorisation, renormalisation
scale dependence and uncertainties due to various parton distribution functions are studied. Uncertainties arising from the
error on experimental data are estimated using the MRST parton distribution functions.

In this paper, we introduce three probability distribution functions into the dynamic equation and propose a macro traffic flow model to investigate the impacts of the probability distribution functions on the evolutions of traffic flow under three typical states (i.e., uniform flow, shock, rarefaction wave, and small perturbation). The numerical results indicate that the probability distribution functions do not change the density and speed distributions of uniform flow, produce a two-layer shock but have no prominent effects on rarefaction wave, and have little effect on small perturbation.
