 We establish a general gluing theorem for constant mean curvature solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. This allows one to take connected sums of solutions or to glue a handle (wormhole) onto any given solution. Away from this handle region, the initial data sets we produce can be made as close as desired to the original initial data sets. These constructions can be made either when the initial manifold is compact or asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic, with suitable corresponding conditions on the extrinsic curvature. In the compact setting a mild nondegeneracy condition is required. In the final section of the paper, we list a number ways this construction may be used to produce new types of vacuum spacetimes. The linearized stability of charged thin shell wormholes under spherically symmetric perturbations is analyzed. It is shown that the presence of a large value of charge provides stabilization to the system, in the sense that the constraints onto the equation of state are less severe than for non-charged wormholes.  相似文献

We show that the Giddings-Strominger-like wormholes exist in the systems comprised of SUL(n)×SUR(n) or O(n) non-linear a models coupled to O(4) symmetric gravity. Some details are discussed for the case of SUL(2)×SUR(2) and two kinds of wormhole instantons are shown.  相似文献

We covariantly first-quantize, via the BRST approach, the closed bosonic string compactified on a torus — in particular the 18-dimensional theory with E8 × E8 gauge bosons. Further, we give the corresponding free field theory. We investigate the necessary condition for the existence of classical Euclidean wormholes in a conformally non-invariant gravitational model minimally coupled to an scalar field. It is shown that while the original Ricci tensor with positive eigenvalues does not allow the Euclidean wormholes to occur, under dynamical conformal transformations the Ricci tensor, with respect to the original metric, is dynamically coupled with the conformal field and its eigenvalues may become negative allowing the Euclidean wormholes to occur. Therefore, it is conjectured that dynamical conformal transformations may provide us with effective forms of matter sources leading to Euclidean wormholes in conformally non-invariant systems.  相似文献
