Stereoselective construction of an anti-β-alkoxy ether by Ireland-Claisen rearrangement for medium-ring ether synthesis

The asymmetric synthesis of an acyclic anti-β-alkoxy ether was achieved by the Ireland-Claisen rearrangement of Z-3-alkoxy-2-propenyl glycolate ester, prepared from Garner’s aldehyde, a glycolic acid derivative, and ethynyl N,N-diisopropylcarbamate. The resulting acyclic ether was facilely converted to seven- and eight-membered cyclic ethers via processes involving ring-closing olefin metatheses.     

Iodine-DMSO catalyzed chemoselective oxidative aromatization and deallylation,nondeallylation of aryl allyl ether of tetrahydro-β-carboline

We have developed a simple method for the chemoselective aromatization of tetrahydro-β-carboline with selective nondeallylation O-allyl groups in the presence of iodine (100 mol %) in dimethyl sulfoxide/H₂O₂. A convergent approach toward the oxidative aromatization with selective deallylation (deprotection) of O-allyl-tetrahydro-β-carboline using iodine in dimethyl sulfoxide/HCl has been described. The present protocol contains cheap catalyst, easy work up, normal reaction conditions, and high selectivity.     

Poly(ether ether ketone) derivative membranes—a review of their preparation, properties and potential

The present paper gives an overview of the properties and performance of membranes of a poly(ether ether ketone) derivative with a cardo group in the chain, known in the literature as PEEKWC or PEK-C. This is one of the typical examples of a new polymer, emerged in the last two decades, with the potential to be applied as a membrane material in a wide range of application fields. Due to the presence of the cardo group in the backbone, the polymer is soluble in several common organic solvents, in contrast to the traditional poly(ether ketone) (PEK) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK). It is therefore more versatile and its solubility allows the use of nonsolvent-induced phase inversion techniques to prepare membranes with a wide range of different morphologies and transport characteristics. The present review will show the current state of the art and will testify that PEEKWC offers interesting perspectives in especially the fields of gas separation, biomedical applications and—in its sulfonated form-in fuel cells. Examples of successful application in microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, pervaporation, membrane contactors, catalytic membranes and some other applications, such as packaging and molecular imprinting will also be shown.     

Effects of humic acids and microorganisms on decabromodiphenyl ether, 4,4′-dibromodiphenyl ether and anthracene transportation in soil

In this study, effects of humic acids (HA) and microorganisms on the migration of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), 4,4′-dibromodiphenyl ether (BDE-15) and anthracene, in soils were examined. More soil particles were dispersed into the colloidal phase (0.22-1 μm) in the presence of HA and/or microorganisms as a result of increased erosion and friction. The study suggested that PBDEs (BDE-209 and BDE-15) and anthracene in soils would be transported to other places by...     

Reactions of β,β′-dichlorodiethyl ether with elemental chalcogens and dimethyl dichalcogenides in the system hydrazine hydrate-base

β,β′-Dichlorodiethyl ether reacted with elemental selenium or tellurium, as well as with binary chalcogen mixtures (S/Se, S/Te, or Se/Te), activated in the system hydrazine hydrate-base to give oligomeric products containing oxygen and polychalcogenide fragments in the chain. Reductive cleavage of these oligomers gave rise to 3-oxapentane-1,5-dichalcogenols and their methyl derivatives. The latter were also synthesized from β,β′-dichlorodiethyl ether and the corresponding dimethyl dichalcogenides in the system hydrazine hydrate-KOH.

Synthesis and reactivity of alkenyl- and alkynyl-substituted β,β-dihalo-and β,β,β-trichloroamines

β,β-Dihalo- and β,β,β-trichloroamines, obtained by Lewis acid-promoted Petasis-type reaction of α,α-dichlorinated and α,α,α-trichlorinated imines or reduction of α,α-dihaloaldimines, were subjected to a reactivity study and turned out to be remarkably stable compounds. In general, only the bases KO^tBu and NaOMe cause a 1,2-dehydrochlorination with formation of unsaturated α-chloroimines or unsaturated α,α-dichloroimines. Hydrolysis of the α-chloroimines with aqueous oxalic acid resulted in the formation of the corresponding unsaturated α-chloroketones. The reaction of simple β,β-dihaloamines with NaOMe and KO^tBu generated 2-haloprop-2-enylmines and 2,2-dimethoxypropylamines.     

Synthesis of new α,α,β,β-tetrafluoroesters

Substituted phenyl iodides or diiodides reacted with ethyl iodotetrafluoroproponylate ICF₂CF₂CO₂Et, 1 in the presence of copper powder to give the coupled products 2 or 3 in good yields. Addition of 1 to ethylene and allyl acetate proceeded smoothly under thermal and radical conditions to give the corresponding adducts, which underwent elimination reaction to give β-vinyl and β-allyl α,α,β,β-tetrafluoroesters, CH₂CHCF₂CF₂CO₂Et, 4 and CH₂CHCH₂CF₂CF₂CO₂Et, 5, respectively. 1 also readily reacted with 1,5-hexadiene and 1-hexene with copper or palladium complex, followed by reduction to remove iodine to produce ω-alkenyl-α,α,β,β-tetrafluoroester CH₂CH(CH₂)₄CF₂CF₂CO₂Et 6 and α,α,β,β-tetrafluoroester C₄H₉CH₂CHICF₂CF₂CO₂Et.     

Characterization of mixed non-ionic surfactants n-octyl-β-D-thioglucoside and octaethylene-glycol monododecyl ether: micellization and microstructure

Mixed micelles of n-octyl-β-D-thioglucoside (OTG) and octaethylene-glycol monododecyl ether (C(12)E(8)), two non-ionic surfactants belonging to the alkyl glucosides and polyoxyethylene alkyl ether families, respectively, were investigated by using light scattering and fluorescence probe techniques. From the determination of the critical micelle concentration (cmc), by the well-established pyrene 1:3 ratio method, it was found that the mixed system behaves ideally, the micellization process being clearly controlled by the ethoxylated surfactant. The micellar hydrodynamic radius as a function of temperature, composition and concentration was obtained by dynamic light scattering measurements. It was observed that the micellar size increases with temperature, this growth being more pronounced as the relative proportion of the ethoxylated surfactant was increased. The behavior of the micellar size with the total surfactant concentration was also found to be dependent on temperature and composition. The clouding temperature, characteristic of the ethoxylated surfactants, was increased with the addition of the sugar surfactant. Lastly, possible structural changes in the micellar palisade layer were examined by steady-state fluorescence anisotropy in conjunction with time-resolved fluorescence studies with the hydrophobic probe coumarin 6 (C6). The obtained results indicate that the participation of the ethoxylated surfactant induces a slightly more polar palisade layer, whereas the probe carries out a faster rotational reorientation as a result of a less compact environment. All these observations were attributed to the different structure of the head groups of both surfactants and, as a consequence, to their different hydration.     

Synthesis of β-Fluoroalkyl-β,β-dimethoxy Ketones and β-Fluoroalkyl-β-methoxy-α,β-enones

α-Bromo-β-fluoroalkyl-α,β-enones react with sodium methoxide in methanol to give the corresponding β-fluoroalkyl-β,β-dimethoxy ketones which eliminate methanol molecule to produce a mixture of E/Z-isomeric β-fluoroalkyl-β-methoxyvinyl ketones, the Z isomer prevailing.     

Polysulfone — sulfonated poly(ether ether) ketone blend membranes: systematic synthesis and characterisation

The effect of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) in membrane formation and separation properties has been investigated in polysulfone(PSU)/SPEEK/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) systems. Charged ultrafiltration/nanofiltration membranes were obtained reliably in the range of 0.5–5 wt.% SPEEK in the polymer blend. All PSU/SPEEK blend membranes had substantially higher water flux, salt rejection, porosity and greatly reduced particle adhesion compared to the PSU base membrane. Further, all of these properties varied systematically with variation of SPEEK content. Reproducibility and stability of the membrane properties was excellent. Pore sizes determined from dextran retention data and AFM measurements showed reasonable agreement. Membranes with 5 wt.% SPEEK demonstrated excellent overall properties. Such membranes had very high permeability, 22.6±1.6×10⁻¹¹ m³ s⁻¹ N⁻¹, 0.999 fractional rejection of 4000 Da dextran, 0.65 rejection of 0.001 M NaCl, and only 0.75 mN m⁻¹ adhesion of a 4 μm silica particle. Such membranes are very promising for scale-up of production and testing on real process streams.     

Enantioselective Michael addition of 3(2H)-furanones to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes catalyzed by a diphenylprolinol silyl ether

Enantioselective Michael addition of simple 3(2H)-furanones to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes has been described. The protocol provides a simple and efficient access to complex 3(2H)-furanones containing adjacent quaternary and tertiary stereocenters in high yields with moderate diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities.     

β,β-Dinitro derivatives ofN-alkyl-N′-alkoxydiazene-N-oxides

Stereoisomerism ofβ-polyfluoroalkyl-α,β-enones

-Polyfluoroalkyl-,-enones formed in the E,Z form are converted by the action of atmospheric oxygen into a 937 mixture of E,Z and Z,E isomers in the dark and 6040 mixture of these isomers in the light. The Z isomer of 1-phenyl-4,4, 4-trifluoro-2-buten-1-one was isolated preparatively for the first time and its E conformation relative to the C-C bond was established. β,β′-Linked cofacial bis-porphyrins

The copper(II) porphyrin 1, bearing a fused methylenepropano ring, undergoes an unusual self-sensitized photo-oxygenation reaction in the presence of DBU to give a high yield of a cofacial bis-porphyrin 7 under very mild conditions. The structures of compounds 1 and 7 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.     

Synthesis, complexation properties and crystal structure of 4'''',5''''-dibromo-oxylyl-17-crown-5 ether

4',5'-Dibromo-o-xylyl-17-crown-5 ether (2BrB17C5) was synthesized,starting from 1,2-dibromo-4,5-bis(bromomethyl)-benzene and tetraethylene glycol,and was characterized by 1H NMR,MS and elemental analysis.Pale yellow prismatic single crystal obtained from anhydrous ethanol was investigated by X-ray structural analysis.The complexation properties toward alkali metal ions were examined using the solvent extraction method and UV absorption spectroscopy.The crown ether was found to be conformationally deformed and oblate-like and is highly selective for lithium ion.
