Adsorption of water vapour from humid air by selected carbon adsorbents   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The water uptake by carbon molecular sieves (CMS) and graphitized carbons, all of which are used to determine volatile organic compounds in air, was investigated using a direct experimental approach. CMS, e.g. Carboxen 1002, Carboxen 1003 and Anasorb CMS adsorb substantial amounts of water, in the range 400 to 450 mg per gram of adsorbent. Graphitized carbons, e.g. Carbrogaph 5TD and Carbopack X show low water trapping, less than 30 mg g(-1) and Carbopack Y as little as 5 mg g(-1) or less. The water sorption capacity for graphitized carbons is strongly dependent on the relative humidity (RH). The change of RH from 95 to 90% decreases the amount of adsorbed water by more than a factor of 2. Two different water adsorption mechanisms are operative: adsorption on polar centers and micropore volume filling. For graphitized carbons and CMS at low RH, adsorption on polar centers is involved. For CMS, once the threshold value of relative humidity (RHth) is surpassed, micropore volume filling becomes predominant. RHth is 44 +/- 3 and 42 +/- 3% for Carboxen 1002 and 1003, respectively, and 32 +/- 3% for Anasorb CMS. The CMS mass in the trap was found not to affect the mass of retained water under condition of incomplete saturation of adsorbent bed with water. Thus, the restrictions commonly imposed on the CMS mass are not necessary. The dry purging technique is suggested to remove adsorbed water. Carbograph 5TD and Carbopack X require only a few hundred ml of dry air to remove adsorbed water entirely. Water can also be purged out from CMS; however, much larger volumes of dry air are needed.  相似文献

Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) detects and quantifies in real time the trace gases, M, in air/breath samples introduced directly into a flow tube. Inevitably, relatively large partial pressures of water vapour are introduced with the sample and the water molecules become involved in the ion chemistry on which this analytical technique depends. When H(3)O(+) ions are used as the precursors for chemical ionisation and SIFT mass spectrometric analyses of M, they generally result in the formation of MH(+) ions. Also, when water vapour is present the H(3)O(+) ions are partially converted to hydrated hydronium ions, H(3)O(+).(H(2)O)(1,2,3). The latter may act as precursor ions and produce new product ions like MH(+).(H(2)O)(1,2,3) via ligand switching and association reactions. This ion chemistry and the product ions that result from it must be accounted for in accurate analyses by SIFT-MS. In this paper we describe the results of a detailed SIFT study of the reactions involved in the quantification of acetone, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, methanol, ethanol, ammonia and methyl cyanide by SIFT-MS in the presence of water vapour. This study was undertaken to provide the essential data that allows more accurate analyses of moist air and breath by SIFT-MS to be achieved. It is shown using our standard analysis procedure that the error of SIFT-MS quantification caused by the presence of water vapour is typically 15%. An improved analysis procedure is then presented that is shown to reduce this error to typically 2%. Additionally, some fundamental data have been obtained on the association reactions of protonated organic molecules, MH(+) ions, with water molecules forming MH(+).H(2)O monohydrate ions. For some types of M, reaction sequences occur that lead to the formation of dihydrate and trihydrate ions.  相似文献

The influence of water vapour on the course of the thermal decompositions of pure calcite, magnesite and dolomite, and of these materials mixed with 2% sodium chloride, was studied partly under dynamic, and partly under quasi-isothermal heating conditions. The sample holders used were of four different types, i.e. the carbon dioxide in direct contact with the solid phase of the sample was at different partial pressures. The investigations were carried out in the presence of dried air as well as in air of 60% and 100% humidity content. It is stated that the presence of water vapour increases the decomposition temperature of the first stage of dolomite decomposition (by about 20–50°C) but reduces it in the second stage (by about 5–10°C), as it does in the decomposition of calcite and magnesite. It was also found that the presence of sodium chloride and water vapour together reduces the temperature of both decomposition stages of dolomite.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of composite mass spectral (CMS) data from pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (PY–GC/MS) for lignocellulosic materials. Various forages, by-products and fiber fractions derived from them were examined as CMS by PY–GC/MS. The PY–GC/MS system consisted of a heated platinum filament, a capillary gas chromatograph and an ion trap detector (ITD) mass spectrometer operated under electron impact conditions. Mass spectra were then composited in several ways by summing all the mass spectra acquired within retention times corresponding to major product classes. CMS data were entered in a dedicated library and compared using the ITD library editor software. The usefulness of such a simple procedure for studies related to lignocellulose analysis, such as forage recognition, development of analytical methods and digestibility/maturity correlation, is discussed.  相似文献

Quadrupole ion traps are reviewed, emphasizing recent developments, especially the investigation of new geometries, guided by multiple particle simulations such as the ITSIM program. These geometries include linear ion traps (LITs) and the simplified rectilinear ion trap (RIT). Various methods of fabrication are described, including the use of rapid prototyping apparatus (RPA), in which 3D objects are generated through point-by-point laser polymerization. Fabrication in silicon using multilayer semi-conductor fabrication techniques has been used to construct arrays of micro-traps. The performance of instruments containing individual traps as well as arrays of traps of various sizes and geometries is reviewed. Two types of array are differentiated. In the first type, trap arrays constitute fully multiplexed mass spectrometers in which multiple samples are examined using multiple sources, analyzers and detectors, to achieve high throughput analysis. In the second, an array of individual traps acts collectively as a composite trap to increase trapping capacity and performance for a single sample. Much progress has been made in building miniaturized mass spectrometers; a specific example is a 10 kg hand-held tandem mass spectrometer based on the RIT mass analyzer. The performance of this instrument in air and water analysis, using membrane sampling, is described.  相似文献

A novel Hadamard transform-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HT-GC/MS) system equipped with on-line sample collection systems is described. A Hadamard-injector was successfully designed and then coupled with an on-line adsorption/desorption system for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) system, respectively, by HT-GC/MS. Six VOCs and three pesticides were used as model compounds. In the former case, an activated-charcoal trap was used to trap VOCs from the indoor air. After 10 L of indoor air had passed through the trap, the condensed components were heated and simultaneously injected into the GC column through the Hadamard-injector, based on Hadamard codes. In a second experiment, a sample of rice was spiked with three types of pesticides and the sample then extracted using a commercially available supercritical fluid extractor. After extraction, the extracted components were transferred to a holding tank and simultaneously injected into the GC column also using the Hadamard-injector. The findings show that, in both cases, the combination of on-line sample collection methods and the use of the Hadamard transform resulted in improved sensitivity and detection. Compared to the single injection used in most GC/MS systems, the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios were substantially improved after inverse Hadamard transformation of the encoded chromatogram.  相似文献

The isotope ratio of atmospheric water vapour is determined by wide-ranging feedback effects from the isotope ratio of water in biological water pools, soil surface horizons, open water bodies and precipitation. Accurate determination of atmospheric water vapour isotope ratios is important for a broad range of research areas from leaf-scale to global-scale isotope studies. In spite of the importance of stable isotopic measurements of atmospheric water vapour, there is a paucity of published data available, largely because of the requirement for liquid nitrogen or dry ice for quantitative trapping of water vapour. We report results from a non-cryogenic method for quantitatively trapping atmospheric water vapour using 3A molecular sieve, although water is removed from the column using standard cryogenic methods. The molecular sieve column was conditioned with water of a known isotope ratio to 'set' the background signature of the molecular sieve. Two separate prototypes were developed, one for large collection volumes (3 mL) and one for small collection volumes (90 microL). Atmospheric water vapour was adsorbed to the column by pulling air through the column for several days to reach the desired final volume. Water was recovered from the column by baking at 250 degrees C in a dry helium or nitrogen air stream and cryogenically trapped. For the large-volume apparatus, the recovered water differed from water that was simultaneously trapped by liquid nitrogen (the experimental control) by 2.6 per thousand with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.5 per thousand for delta(2)H and by 0.3 per thousand with a SD of 0.2 per thousand for delta(18)O. Water-vapour recovery was not satisfactory for the small volume apparatus.  相似文献

Abstract

Trace level Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in ambient air are normally determined according to EPA Method TO-14. This method describes the analysis in ambient air of 41 VOCs, ranging in boiling point from -29 to 215°C. It covers a concentration range from 0.2 to 20 parts per billion, volume/volume (ppb), and specifies sample enrichment of a 400 mL air sample on glass beads at -160°C. While this sample volume provides sub-ppb levels of VOC detection for target analytes when using a quadrupole mass spectrometer detector in SIM mode or when using GC detectors, the identification of non-target analytes may only be done in full scan mode for higher concentrations. Also with this sample volume a Nafion dryer is needed for water removal thereby lowering the recovery of polar VOCs.

Because of the very high sensitivity of the ion trap MS, relatively small air volumes (60 mL) are adequate to obtain the required or lower detection levels. An integrated air analysis system based on a GC-ion-trap MS has been investigated and is described. This system has a built-in cryogenic trap and necessary valving, internal standard gas sampling loop, and is controlled from the GC-MS workstation. The linearity, precision, and method detection levels obtainable with this system when using small volumes are reported. In addition, examples of the quantitative and qualitative analysis of ambient air samples are shown.  相似文献

Following our recent observation that Pseudomonas bacteria in vitro emit hydrogen cyanide, we have found it necessary to investigate the ion chemistry of this compound and to extend the kinetics database for selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) to allow the accurate quantification of HCN in moist air samples, including exhaled breath. Because of the proximity of the proton affinities of HCN and H2O molecules, the presence of water vapour can significantly distort HCN analysis in the presence of water vapour and a more sophisticated analytical procedure has to be developed. Thus, the reactions of H3O+(H2O)0,1,2,3 ions with HCN molecules have been studied in the presence of varying concentrations of water vapour, reactions on which SIFT-MS analysis of HCN relies. The results of these experiments have allowed an analytical procedure to be developed which has extended the kinetics database of SIFT-MS, such that HCN can now be quantified in humid air and in exhaled breath.  相似文献

A needle trap (NT) technique for simultaneous sampling and analysis of vapor and particle mercury in ambient air using gold wire filled in a syringe needle has been developed. This NT technique relies on gold amalgamation rather than adsorption/absorption to traditional solid-phase microextraction. Hg trapped by Au-amalgamation NT is thermally desorbed in a hot injection port of a gas chromatograph; desorbed Hg is then determined by the coupled mass spectrometer. This simultaneous sampling and analysis technique were optimized, tested, and used for the collection and accurate determination of elemental Hg in ambient air. Linear calibration curves were obtained for Hg sampling by NT when mass spectrometry (MS) was used for detection; they spanned over 4 orders of magnitude. MS offered excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Selected ion monitor (SIM) mode was used for the linear calibration curves. The selected quantitation ion was m/z 202, since m/z 202 was the strongest isotope of mercury mass spectrum. The method was verified with HgCl(2) spiked solution samples. An excellent agreement was found between the results obtained for the Hg-saturated air samples and HgCl(2) spiked solution samples. The use of the Au-amalgamation gas-sampling needle trap method, for the measurement of Hg in air and Hg(2+) water samples, is described herein.  相似文献

An analytical system composed of a purge-and-trap injection system coupled to gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (PTI-GC-MS) specific for the analysis of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHCs) (chloroform; 1,1,1-trichloroethane; tetrachloromethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethylene; tetrachloroethylene) and trihalomethanes (THMs) (chloroform; bromodichloromethane; dibromochloromethane; bromoform) in water was optimised. Samples were purged and trapped in a cold trap (-100 degrees C) fed with liquid nitrogen (cryo-concentration). In order to make this method suitable also for only slightly contaminated waters, some modifications were made to PTI sample introduction, in order to avoid any air intake into the system. PTI, GC and MS conditions were optimised for halogenated compound analysis and limits of detection (LOD) were evaluated. The proposed method allows analysis of samples whose concentrations range from microg/L to ng/L. It is, therefore, applicable to drinking waters, in analyses required by law, and to slightly contaminated aqueous matrices, such as those found in remote areas, in environmental monitoring. Moreover, by changing cold trap temperature, even sparkling mineral waters can be analysed, thus avoiding CO2 interference during the cryo-concentration phase. Our method has been successfully used on real samples: tap water, mineral water and Antarctic snow.  相似文献

The mass spectrum of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene vapour in air was recorded and the negative-ion fragmentation pathways of the molecular anion were investigated down to the fourth generation. The dissociation of the parent anion led to the production of three fragment anions with masses 46, 197 and 210 u where the last two daughter ions initiated two entirely separate fragmentation pathways. These pathways were studied and the fragmentation mechanisms identified. The background negative-ion mass spectrum, generated by the glow discharge ion source in the airstream which carries the sample vapour into the source, was examined in detail and an assignment of this mass spectrum is included.  相似文献

An analytical system composed of a cryofocusing trap injector device coupled to a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometric detection (CTI-GC–MS) specific for the on-line analysis in air of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHCs) (dichloromethane; chloroform; 1,1,1-trichloroethane; tetrachloromethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethylene; tetrachloroethylene) was developed. The cryofocusing trap injector was the result of appropriate low cost modifications to an original purge-and-trap device to make it suitable for direct air analysis even in the case of only slightly contaminated air samples, such as those from remote zones. The CTI device can rapidly and easily be rearranged into the purge-and-trap allowing water and air analysis with the same apparatus. Air samples, collected in stainless steel canisters, were introduced directly into the CTI-GC–MS system to realize cryo-concentration (at −120 °C), thermal desorption (at 200 °C) and for the subsequent analysis of volatiles. The operating phases and conditions were customised and optimized. Recovery efficiency was optimized in terms of moisture removal, cold trap temperature and sampling mass flow. The injection of entrapped volatiles was realized through a direct transfer with high chromatographic reliability (capillary column–capillary column). These improvements allowed obtaining limits of detection (LODs) at least one order of magnitude lower than current LODs for the investigated substances. The method was successfully employed on real samples: air from urban and rural areas and air from remote zones such as Antarctica.  相似文献

Ontario Provincial Water Quality Objectives for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface waters require low parts per trillion (ng L(-1))/high parts per quadrillion (pg L(-1)) detection limits. To meet these monitoring requirements, a solid phase extraction-gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry (SPE-GC-ITMS) method was developed. Seventeen priority PAHs commonly monitored in surface and drinking waters were examined using an external ionization ion trap mass spectrometer operated in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. Under 70 eV electron ionization (El) conditions, both the quantitative [M]+* ion and confirmatory [M - 2H]+* ion were formed in classical abundance ratios. Each of these ion species was isolated in the ion trap using a specific scan function. However, to overcome poor levels of confirmatory ion abundance which otherwise restrict PAH method detection limits (MDLs), the abundance of [M - 2H]+* ions was augmented during isolation by causing the dissociation of [M]+* with the broad-band waveform used for high mass ion ejection. Augmenting the [M - 2H]+* signal intensity facilitated the achievement of MDLs of approximately 1 ng L(-1). PAHs in surface water samples that were not detected by current Ontario Ministry of the Environment high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-fluorescence and GC-single-stage quadrupole mass spectrometry methods were detected and quantified using the ion trap mass spectrometry SIM method. The data produced by all three methods on natural water samples fortified at sub-parts per billion (ppb) levels were comparable. When applied to Standards Council of Canada/Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories (SCC/CAEAL, www.CAEAL.ca) accreditation audit samples, the SPE-GC-ITMS method results met all performance evaluation criteria.  相似文献

The time necessary for the measurement of gas adsorption on a solid can be substantially reduced by using Jäntti's directions for data interpretation. This procedure already delivers results after measuring only a few values of the adsorbed mass. In earlier papers we introduced a second order adaptation to Jäntti's method to broaden its applicability. In the present paper we apply this second order treatment to the adsorption of water vapour from moistened air. Specially we pay attention to the diffusion delay caused by the boundary layer around the sample. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A type of purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PMWCNTs) prepared by catalytic decomposition of methane, with a surface area of 98 m2/g, was evaluated as an adsorbent used for tapping volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The performance in evaluation was based on breakthrough volumes (BTVs) and recoveries of selected VOCs. PMWCNTs were also used as a trap packing material to adsorb VOCs purged from spiked water sample. Due to their porous structure, PMWCNTs were found to have much higher BTVs than that of Carbopack B, a graphitized carbon black with the same surface area as PMWCNTs. The recoveries of the tested VOCs trapped on PMWCNTs ranged from 80 to 110%, and not affected by the humidity of purge gas. The results indicate that PMWCNTs are a potential useful adsorbent for direct trapping VOCs from air samples and may be a supplement to VOCARB 3000, a commercially available trap, in purge-and-trap system to preconcentrate VOCs from water samples.  相似文献

Secondary organic material (SOM) constitutes a large mass fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles. Understanding its impact on climate and air quality relies on accurate models of interactions with water vapour. Recent research shows that SOM can be highly viscous and can even behave mechanically like a solid, leading to suggestions that particles exist out of equilibrium with water vapour in the atmosphere. In order to quantify any kinetic limitation we need to know water diffusion coefficients for SOM, but this quantity has, until now, only been estimated and has not yet been measured. We have directly measured water diffusion coefficients in the water soluble fraction of α-pinene SOM between 240 and 280 K. Here we show that, although this material can behave mechanically like a solid, at 280 K water diffusion is not kinetically limited on timescales of 1 s for atmospheric-sized particles. However, diffusion slows as temperature decreases. We use our measured data to constrain a Vignes-type parameterisation, which we extend to lower temperatures to show that SOM can take hours to equilibrate with water vapour under very cold conditions. Our modelling for 100 nm particles predicts that under mid- to upper-tropospheric conditions radial inhomogeneities in water content produce a low viscosity surface region and more solid interior, with implications for heterogeneous chemistry and ice nucleation.  相似文献

The majority of measurements of mercury vapour, for example those to determine mass concentration in air, are currently ultimately traceable to the vapour pressure of mercury, usually via a bell-jar calibration apparatus. This allows a saturated concentration of mercury vapour in air to develop in a confined space in equilibrium with ambient conditions, from which a known mass of mercury can be removed for calibration purposes. Several empirical equations are available to describe the vapour pressure of mercury at a given temperature, but the agreement between them is not good, with data from different equations sometimes differing by 5% or more. In order to remove the dependence of mercury vapour measurement on these empirical equations, and to provide stability, comparability and coherence for mercury vapour measurements, this paper describes work undertaken to link directly mercury vapour measurements to standards of mass, and therefore to establish traceability for these measurements to the SI system of units. This has been achieved by measuring the mass output rate of a dynamic mercury vapour generator gravimetrically, and linking this to the expected mass concentration in the bell-jar apparatus. The SI traceable mercury vapour measurements have been shown to agree with the predicted output from the bell-jar, as defined by the most commonly used empirical mercury vapour pressure equation, within the uncertainty of the measurement.  相似文献

The discontinuous atmospheric pressure interface (DAPI) has been developed to allow a direct transfer of ions from atmosphere into an ion trap mass spectrometer with minimum pumping capability. Air is introduced into the trap with ions and used as a buffer gas for the ion trap operation. In this study, a method of introducing helium as a second buffer gas was developed for a miniature mass spectrometer using a dual DAPI configuration. The buffer gas effects on the performance of a linear ion trap (LIT) with hyperbolic electrodes were characterized for ion isolation, fragmentation and a mass-selective instability scan. Significant improvement was obtained with helium for resolutions of mass analysis and ion isolation, while moderate advantage was gained with air for collision-induced dissociation. The buffer gas can be switched between air and helium for different steps within a single scan, which allows further optimization of the instrument performance for tandem mass spectrometry.  相似文献

An overview of membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) is presented and comparisons are made with other direct sample introduction techniques. Special attention is given to the unique advantages and the limitations of newer variants on the MIMS technique, including affinity MIMS, reverse-phase and trap MIMS. The salient features of the interfaces used in MIMS are summarized and the various membrane materials commonly used are delineated. The applicability of MIMS is illustrated via discussion of
1. (i) bioreactor monitoring (represented by yeast fermentation),
2. (ii) environmental monitoring (illustrated by analysis of contaminated ground water samples) and
3. (iii) on-line chemical reaction monitoring (exemplified by the photolysis of aryl esters).
The applicability of MIMS to the analysis of environmental samples, including complex mixtures in water, air and soil, is noted.  相似文献
