The finite element method and the Newton–Raphson solution algorithm are combined to solve the momentum, mass and energy conservation equations for coupled flow problems. Design sensitivities for a generalised response function with respect to design parameters which describe shape, material property and load data are evaluated via the direct differentiation method. The efficiently computed sensitivities are verified by comparison with computationally intensive, finite difference sensitivity approximations. The design sensitivities are then used in a numerical optimization algorithm to minimize the pressure drop in flow through contractions. Both laminar and turbulent flows are considered. In the turbulent flow problems the time-averaged momentum and mass conservati on equations are solved using a mixing length turbulence model.  相似文献

A direct method for analyzing diapycnal mixing in a stably stratified fluid (Winters et al., 1995) has been applied to the stably stratified shear layer. The diapycnal flux and mixing efficiency are computed as functions of time, whatever the turbulent activity in the fluid. The mixing properties of two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations are analyzed and compared. The interest of the former simulations is to emphasize the fundamental role of three-dimensional effects in fluid mixing and to quantify it. We focus on the influence of stratification (measured by the minimum Richardson number J) and changes in Prandtl number on the overall mixing that occurs as the computed flows evolve from unstable initial conditions.

In three dimensions, the flow dynamics exhibit three successive stages, each with different mixing properties. During the first stage, a primarily two-dimensional Kelvin–Helmholtz instability develops and the mixing efficiency is high (the flux Richardson number Rfb ranges between 0.37 and 0.68, decreasing as J increases). The second stage is characterized by the development of small-scale three-dimensional instabilities. These motions result in significantly higher diapycnal flux than during the first stage but in only moderate mixing efficiency (Rfb0.32), as the rate of kinetic energy dissipation is also high during this stage. Finally, the turbulent activity is progressively expulsed toward the outer regions of the shear layer and decays in time while the central region relaminarizes. During this final stage, Rfb approaches an asymptotic value close to 0.25 and the diapycnal diffusivity displays a clear functional dependence on a gradient Richardson number Rib of the form Rib−2.

As expected, the two-dimensional flows are unable to reproduce the mixing properties of the flow, except during the first stage. During the subsequent turbulent regime, both the diapycnal flux and the dissipation rate of kinetic energy are too small (because, for the latter quantity, of the nonlinear enstrophy conservation constraint). The final stage consists in a quasi-stationary weakly turbulent regime, for which the diapycnal diffusivity behaves as Rib−1. It should be noted that, despite these differences, Rfb relaxes toward the 0.25 value found in three dimensions.  相似文献

This paper presents a manufactured solution (MS), resembling a two-dimensional, steady, wall-bounded, incompressible, turbulent flow for RANS codes verification. The specified flow field satisfies mass conservation, but requires additional source terms in the momentum equations. To also allow verification of the correct implementation of the turbulence models transport equations, the proposed MS exhibits most features of a true near-wall turbulent flow. The model is suited for testing six eddy-viscosity turbulence models: the one-equation models of Spalart and Allmaras and Menter; the standard two-equation k–ε model and the low-Reynolds version proposed by Chien; the TNT and BSL versions of the k–ω model.  相似文献

A convergence acceleration method based on an additive correction multigrid–SIMPLEC (ACM‐S) algorithm with dynamic tuning of the relaxation factors is presented. In the ACM‐S method, the coarse grid velocity correction components obtained from the mass conservation (velocity potential) correction equation are included into the fine grid momentum equations before the coarse grid momentum correction equations are formed using the additive correction methodology. Therefore, the coupling between the momentum and mass conservation equations is obtained on the coarse grid, while maintaining the segregated structure of the single grid algorithm. This allows the use of the same solver (smoother) on the coarse grid. For turbulent flows with heat transfer, additional scalar equations are solved outside of the momentum–mass conservation equations loop. The convergence of the additional scalar equations is accelerated using a dynamic tuning of the relaxation factors. Both a relative error (RE) scheme and a local Reynolds/Peclet (ER/P) relaxation scheme methods are used. These methodologies are tested for laminar isothermal flows and turbulent flows with heat transfer over geometrically complex two‐ and three‐dimensional configurations. Savings up to 57% in CPU time are obtained for complex geometric domains representative of practical engineering problems. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical model is described for the prediction of turbulent continuum equations for two-phase gas–liquid flows in bubble columns. The mathematical formulation is based on the solution of each phase. The two-phase model incorporates interfacial models of momentum transfer to account for the effects of virtual mass, lift, drag and pressure discontinuities at the gas–liquid interface. Turbulence is represented by means of a two-equation k–ϵ model modified to account for bubble-induced turbulence production. The numerical discretization is based on a staggered finite-volume approach, and the coupled equations are solved in a segregated manner using the IPSA method. The model is implemented generally in the multipurpose PHOENICS computer code, although the present appllications are restricted to two-dimensional flows. The model is applied to simulate two bubble column geometries and the predictions are compared with the measured circulation patterns and void fraction distributions.  相似文献

A1‐D numerical model is presented for vertically homogeneous shallow flows with variable horizontal density. The governing equations represent depth‐averaged mass and momentum conservation of a liquid–species mixture, and mass conservation of the species in the horizontal direction. Here, the term ‘species’ refers to material transported with the liquid flow. For example, when the species is taken to be suspended sediment, the model provides an idealized simulation of hyper‐concentrated sediment‐laden flows. The volumetric species concentration acts as an active scalar, allowing the species dynamics to modify the flow structure. A Godunov‐type finite volume scheme is implemented to solve the conservation laws written in a deviatoric, hyperbolic form. The model is verified for variable‐density flows, where analytical steady‐state solutions are derived. The agreement between the numerical predictions and benchmark test solutions illustrates the ability of the model to capture rapidly varying flow features over uniform and non‐uniform bed topography. A parameter study examines the effects of varying the initial density and depth in different regions. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A calculation is made of the turbulent zone of mixing of two flows of viscous and heat conducting gas in a Laval nozzle. For such a nozzle of given geometry, a comparison is made of calculations of the integrated characteristics of flows that are nonuniform with respect to the total parameters in the framework of various models: laminar hydraulics, viscous laminar hydraulics, and total mixing without hydraulic losses. The calculations are made for a stationary, nonswlrling flow of a viscous heat conducting gas with nearly discontinuous step distribution of the total parameters at the entrance to an axisymmetric Laval nozzle of given geometry. In this situation, the gas flows with different total parameters at the entrance to the nozzle are separated by a surface near which the profiles of the flow parameters are specified on the basis of boundary-layer theory. In the blocked regime investigated here, the flow in the part where the nozzle becomes narrower and at least at the beginning of the expanding part does not depend on the pressure of the surrounding medium. The integrated characteristics of the nozzle (gas flow rate G, impulse I, specific impulse i = I/G, etc.) depend on the parameter distributions at the entrance to the nozzle, and also on the turbulent mixing of the flows in the mixing zone. To analyze the dependence of the integrated characteristics on the turbulent mixing, the values of these characteristics calculated in the framework of the three models are compared. The model of mixing without hydraulic losses presupposes complete equalization of the parameters of the original inhomogeneous flow in the constant-area chamber in front of the nozzle with conservation of the mass, energy, and momentum fluxes. The model of laminar hydraulics is described in detail in [1, 2]. The model of viscous laminar hydraulics will be described in Sec. 1.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 114–119, July–August, 1979.I thank A. N. A quasi-one-dimensional, five-equation, homogeneous, nonequilibrium model has been developed and utilized on a microcomputer to calculate the behavior of flowing, initially subcooled, flashing water systems. Equations for mixture and vapor mass conservation, mixture momentum conservation, liquid energy conservation and bubble transport were discretized and linearized semi-implicitly, and solved using a successive iteration Newton method. Closure was obtained through simple constitutive equations for friction and spherical bubble growth, and a new nucleation model for wall nucleation in small nozzles combined with an existing model for bulk nucleation in large geometries to obtain the thermal nonequilibrium between phases. The model described was applied to choked nozzle flow with subcooled water inlets based on specified inlet conditions of pressure and temperature, and vanishing inlet void fraction and bubble number density. Good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experiment confirms the adequacy of the nucleation models in determining both the initial size and number density of nuclei, and indicates that mechanical nonequilibrium between phases is not an important factor in these flows. It is shown that bulk nucleation becomes important as the volume-to-surface ratio of the geometry is increased.  相似文献

Horizontal-shear thin-layer homogeneous fluid flow in the open channel is considered. A one-dimensional mathematical model of the development and evolution of the horizontal mixing layer is derived within the framework of the three-layer scheme. The steady-state solutions of the equations of motion are constructed and investigated. In particular, supercritical (subcritical)-in-average flow concepts are introduced and the problem of the mixing layer structure is solved. The proposed model is verified on the basis of comparison with a numerical solution of two-dimensional equations of shallow water theory.  相似文献

In this paper we present a finite difference method for solving two-dimensional viscoelastic unsteady free surface flows governed by the single equation version of the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model. The momentum equations are solved by a projection method which uncouples the velocity and pressure fields. We are interested in low Reynolds number flows and, to enhance the stability of the numerical method, an implicit technique for computing the pressure condition on the free surface is employed. This strategy is invoked to solve the governing equations within a Marker-and-Cell type approach while simultaneously calculating the correct normal stress condition on the free surface. The numerical code is validated by performing mesh refinement on a two-dimensional channel flow. Numerical results include an investigation of the influence of the parameters of the XPP equation on the extrudate swelling ratio and the simulation of the Barus effect for XPP fluids.  相似文献

An innovative computational model, developed to simulate high‐Reynolds number flow past circular cylinders in two‐dimensional incompressible viscous flows in external flow fields is described in this paper. The model, based on transient Navier–Stokes equations, can solve the infinite boundary value problems by extracting the boundary effects on a specified finite computational domain, using the projection method. The pressure is assumed to be zero at infinite boundary and the external flow field is simulated using a direct boundary element method (BEM) by solving a pressure Poisson equation. A three‐step finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the momentum equations of the flow. The present model is applied to simulate high‐Reynolds number flow past a single circular cylinder and flow past two cylinders in which one acts as a control cylinder. The simulation results are compared with experimental data and other numerical models and are found to be feasible and satisfactory. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical technique (FGVT) for solving the time-dependent incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in fluid flows with large density variations is presented for staggered grids. Mass conservation is based on a volume tracking method and incorporates a piecewise-linear interface reconstruction on a grid twice as fine as the velocity–pressure grid. It also uses a special flux-corrected transport algorithm for momentum advection, a multigrid algorithm for solving a pressure-correction equation and a surface tension algorithm that is robust and stable. In principle, the method conserves both mass and momentum exactly, and maintains extremely sharp fluid interfaces. Applications of the numerical method to prediction of two-dimensional bubble rise in an inclined channel and a bubble bursting through an interface are presented. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical method for predicting viscous flows in complex geometries has been presented. Integral mass and momentum conservation equations are deploved and these are discretized into algebraic form through numerical quadrature. The physical domain is divided into a number of non-orthogonal control volumes which are isoparametrically mapped on to standard rectangular cells. Numerical integration for unsteady mementum equations is performed over such non-orthogonal cells. The explicitly advanced velocity components obtained from unsteady momentum equations may not necessarily satisfy the mass conservation condition in each cell. Compliance of the mass conservation equation and the consequent evolution of correct pressure distribution are accomplished through an iterative correction of pressure and velocity till divergence-free condition is obtained in each cell. The algorithm is applied on a few test problems, namely, lid-driven square and oblique cavities, developing flow in a rectangular channel and flow over square and circular cylinders placed in rectangular channels. The results exhibit good accuracy and justify the applicability of the algorithm. This Explicit Transient Algorithm for Flows in Arbitrary Geometry is given a generic name EXTRAFLAG.  相似文献

This paper presents a two-dimensional SPH model designed to simulate free-surface flows of dense granular materials. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is a mesh-free numerical method based on a Lagrangian discretization of the continuum mass and momentum conservation equations. The rheology of dense granular materials is modelled using a new local constitutive law recently proposed by Jop et al. (Nature, 2006). Of the viscoplastic class, this law is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and local pressure. Validation test cases of the model in steady and unsteady configurations are presented. For steady cases (vertical chute flow and uniform free-surface layers on inclines), excellent agreement with analytical predictions is obtained. In the unsteady case, the simulations satisfactorily capture the dynamics of gravity-driven surges observed in experiments, including behaviours that are very specific to granular materials. Among the various parameters involved in the computations, the influence of SPH particle configuration within the flow and of the threshold viscosity used in the regularization of the constitutive yield criterion are particularly discussed.  相似文献

Oldroyd-type constitutive equations can be represented for simple shear flow and various elongational flows by at most three equations, each of which only contains the shear stress or one of the normal-stress differences. These equations are proved to be linear differential equations with respect to the stress values. Uniform modes of representation can be established for the basic equations of elongational flow as well as shear flow. These basic equations are of advantage in using the viscoelastic constitutive equations. A model analysis can be carried out most clearly in dimensionless form. When used as material functions, uniform representation is of advantage in parameter identification. In establishing models of real elongational flow processes, constitutive equations and momentum conservation law can be easily combined, as has been demonstrated.  相似文献

The space–time conservation element and solution element (CE/SE) method originally developed for non-reacting flows is extended to accommodate finite-rate chemical kinetics for multi-component systems. The model directly treats the complete conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentrations. A subtime-step integration technique is established to handle the stiff chemical source terms in the formulation. In addition, a local grid refinement algorithm within the framework of the CE/SE method is incorporated to enhance the flow resolution in areas of interest. The capability and accuracy of the resultant scheme are validated against several detonation problems, including shock-induced detonation with detailed chemical kinetics and multi-dimensional detonation initiation and propagation.  相似文献

The objective of this part of the paper is to summarize the information concerning the authors' works in the field of simulation of two-phase gas-particle turbulent flows with heat transfer and combustion. A kinetic equation had been derived for the probability density function (PDF) of the particle velocity, temperature, and mass distributions in turbulent flows. This PDF equation is used for the construction of the governing conservation equations of mass, momentum, and heat transfer in the dispersed particle phase. The numerical scheme incorporates two-phase fluid dynamics, convective and radiative heat transfer, and combustion. The proposed models have been applied to the calculation of various particle-laden turbulent flows in jets, combustion and gasification chambers, and furnaces.  相似文献
