In this paper we study some structural and geometric properties of the quotient Banach spaces , where is an arbitrary set, is an Orlicz function, is the corresponding Orlicz space on and , being the ideal of elements with finite support. The results we obtain here extend and complete the ones obtained by Leonard and Whitfield (Rocky Mountain J. Math. 13 (1983), 531-539). We show that is not a dual space, that , if for every , that has no smooth points, that it cannot be renormed equivalently with a strictly convex or smooth norm, that is a Grothendieck space, etc.

We prove that the Cech-Stone remainder of the integers, , maps onto its square if and only if there is a nontrivial map between two of its different powers, finite or infinite. We also prove that every compact space that maps onto its own square maps onto its own countable infinite product.

We prove that analytic operators satisfying certain series of operator inequalities possess the wandering subspace property. As a corollary, we obtain Beurling-type theorems for invariant subspaces in certain weighted and Bergman spaces.

We introduce a new method for proving the estimate


where solves the equation . The method can be applied to the Laplacian on . It also allows us to obtain similar estimates when we replace the Laplacian by an infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator or other elliptic operators. These operators arise naturally in martingale problems arising from measure-valued branching diffusions and from stochastic partial differential equations.

In this paper we characterize the boundedness of the bilinear form defined by

Given a -linear operator from a product of spaces into a Banach space , our main result proves the equivalence between being completely continuous, having an -valued separately continuous extension to the product of the biduals and having a regular associated polymeasure. We obtain an estimate for the Hölder continuity exponent for weak solutions to the following elliptic equation in divergence form:

Some years ago, compactly supported divergence-free wavelets were constructed which also gave rise to a stable (biorthogonal) wavelet splitting of . These bases have successfully been used both in the analysis and numerical treatment of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper, we construct stable wavelet bases for the stream function spaces . Moreover, -free vector wavelets are constructed and analysed. The relationship between and are expressed in terms of these wavelets. We obtain discrete (orthogonal) Hodge decompositions.

Our construction works independently of the space dimension, but in terms of general assumptions on the underlying wavelet systems in that are used as building blocks. We give concrete examples of such bases for tensor product and certain more general domains . As an application, we obtain wavelet multilevel preconditioners in and .

The aim of this paper is to derive stable generalized sampling in a shift-invariant space with ? stable generators. This is done in the light of the theory of frames in the product Hilbert space (? times). The generalized samples are expressed as the frame coefficients of an appropriate function in with respect to some particular frame in . Since any multiply stable generated shift-invariant space is the image of by means of a bounded invertible operator, the generalized sampling is obtained from some dual frame expansions in .
