What are you? Even though the metal‐induced ring opening of 3,3‐disubstituted cyclopropenes is known to serve as a genuine carbene generator, the use of AuI in this reaction leads to a reactive intermediate with highly cationic character. This result has important implications for gold catalysis in general, which in the past has been commonly attributed to the intervention of gold carbenes.
Playing the sax : The enantioselective total syntheses of (?)‐ and (+)‐decarbamoyloxysaxitoxin (doSTX) and (+)‐saxitoxin (STX) are reported. A new methodology was developed for the synthesis of STXs, featuring discriminative reduction of the nitro group and N? O bond in nitroisoxazolidine.

Preferred protonation : Does electrospray ionization mass spectrometry produce gas‐phase or liquid‐phase structures? The preferred protonation site in p‐aminobenzoic acid depends upon the medium, and the structure of its conjugate acid varies with the solvent used during spraying.
Hydrogen‐bonded supramolecular copolymers were easily prepared by mixing cyclohexanetricarboxamides with three ( 1 ) and six ( 2 ) alkylsilyl groups, and supramolecular fibers were fabricated. When the composition of 1 and 2 was at or close to equimolarity, the supramolecular copolymer chain was found to have an alternating sequence. This was attributed to the fact that the steric factor of the alkylsilyl side chains effectively controls the unit sequence of the supramolecular polymer chain.
Intelligent design : The total synthesis of the cytotoxic (?)‐FR182877 relies on 1) tandem Diels–Alder reactions to close rings A–D (see scheme), 2) a palladium‐mediated 7‐exo‐trig reaction, and 3) an iridium‐mediated isomerization followed by epimerization and stereoselective reduction.
Hidden talent : Often perceived to be too thermodynamically and kinetically inert to be a useful chemical feedstock, carbon dioxide adds to allenes under exceptionally mild reductive conditions in the presence of a palladium pincer complex to give β,γ‐unsaturated carboxylic acids (see scheme). Electrostatic self‐assembly can be used to form supramolecular vesicles in aqueous solution. Vesicles consist of cationic G8 poly(amidoamine) dendrimers and the trivalent sulfonate dye Ar27. No classical amphiphiles are present but the interplay of electrostatics, π–π interaction and geometric factors influences the structure formation. Labeled guest molecules, both small molecules and peptides, can be included inside these vesicles and vesicles imaged by fluorescence techniques. The structure was studied by dynamic and static light scattering, small‐angle neutron scattering, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The study indicates the prospect of constructing functional nanoobjects by the self‐assembly of charged molecules in aqueous solution.
A breakthrough in the asymmetric hydroboration of notoriously difficult 1,1‐disubstituted alkenes using a new family of highly effective hydroboration reagents is described (see scheme). The intermediate boranes can be oxidized to alcohols or used in Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reactions.
Three of a kind : Vicinal tricarbonyl compounds undergo C? C cleavage mediated by ferric ions (see scheme). The observed cleavage of ninhydrin and dehydroascorbic acid has relevance for amino acid detection and the metabolism of vitamin C.
Weaving an intricate web : A stereoselective synthesis of (?)‐agelastatin A has been developed, which requires 11 steps from commercially available starting material. The application of a Rh‐catalyzed intramolecular olefin aziridination reaction and the subsequent manipulation of the resulting tricyclic intermediate (see scheme) punctuate this study.
No bones about it : (?)‐Norzoanthamine, a promising candidate for an anti‐osteoporotic drug, was the target of a total synthesis (see scheme). The final bisaminal formation with AcOH/H2O gave the DEFG ring, while the cyclization precursor was prepared by installing the remaining bisaminal unit after oxidative cleavage of the cyclopentanol moiety.
The structure of the tetrameric dianion formed by α-methylstyrene in tetrahydrofuran by reaction with sodium has been examined. Mass spectral, NMR, infrared, and kinetic data all indicate that the structure is rather than the structure which had previously been assumed for this species. 相似文献
Let the dominos fall : Synthesis of the complex DFGH ring system of the title compounds has been accomplished. The approach features simple treatment of the key intermediate with a Brønsted base to afford the tetracyclic cage‐shaped target in one pot through a four‐step domino transformation (see scheme; Mc= monochloromesylate, MOM=methoxymethyl).
Throw your hat in the ring : A highly diastereoselective synthesis of the ABC rings of (?)‐norzoanthamine has been achieved starting from the (?)‐Hajos–Parrish ketone (see scheme). Three asymmetric quaternary carbon centers on the C ring were constructed by a 1,4‐addition, and an intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction provided a trans‐decalin scaffold on the AB rings.
