Paddle wheels and pillars : Layered 3D metal–organic frameworks comprised of paddle‐wheel coordination units are constructed under a variety of conditions to incorporate bridging ligands (as illustrated) that impart desired properties, such as guest‐exchange behavior, luminescence, microporosity, and stability, to the material.
Doing the hula twist? A photochemically stimulated inversion of an sp2‐hybridized oxygen atom upon simultaneous rotation of two adjacent bonds may be possible in a pure singlet excited potential energy surface in uninhibited fluid media (see scheme).
Traffic control : By exploiting the interplay of kinetic and thermodynamic effects, the direction of threading/dethreading in a nonsymmetric calixarene wheel can be selected by an appropriate choice of the head group incorporated in the molecular axle (see figure).
Recycling of “green” solvents : Recycling of ionic liquids with high efficiency is of key importance on going from the laboratory‐scale to large‐scale industrial application of these solvents.
Pinches like a crab : The utilization of guanidines as catalysts has been growing at a steady pace. They possess high pKa values and activate through dual hydrogen‐bonding modes of activation. This Focus Review highlights the development of chiral guanidine catalysts in asymmetric organic transformations.
Fullerene flakes : A diacetylene‐functionalized fullerene derivative self‐organizes into flakelike microparticles (see picture). Both the diacetylene and C60 moieties can be effectively cross‐linked, which leads to supramolecular materials with remarkable resistivity to solvent, heat, and mechanical stress. Moreover, the surface of the cross‐linked flakelike objects is highly durable and water‐repellent.
Different lights, different selectivies : Luminescence of a new guanidinium 3,3′‐functionalized bipyridyl–RuII complex has been studied for sensing of several anions. L ‐Glutamate and dihydrogenphosphate are both detected by photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence. However, the complex displays differential selectivities for these anions depending on the sensing channels (see scheme).
Economical atoms : 2‐Cyclopenten‐1‐ones, 5‐alkylidenefuran‐2(5 H)‐ones and indan‐1‐ones have been synthesized by atom‐economic reductive cyclocarbonylation of internal alkynes with carbon monoxide catalyzed by [{RhCl(CO)2}2]/CO(NH2)2 in the presence of water (see scheme).
Onion structures : Carbosilane dendrimers containing up to four metal layers have been constructed (see picture). The metal layers are linked by di‐ or tritopic N,P ligands. Selective deconstruction of the dendrimers is achieved by using salts of chloride or iodide anions.
In the swim : Colloidal nanoparticles coated with polylactide (PLA, red) and poly(ethylene glycol) brushes (PEG, black) can transfer from organic to aqueous phases across liquid/liquid or liquid/gel interfaces during degradation of the PLA coating (see picture: first step), which is driven selectively by the hydrogen bonding of the PEG coating with the aqueous phase (second step).
Seeing the sites : The Suzuki–Miyaura reaction of substrates containing multiple coupling sites has been performed in a directed manner through the reactivity modulation of the boron moiety (see scheme). Several other strategies are also discussed.
Two‐faced nanocrystals : Rapid addition of a second aliquot of silver nitrate during a polyol synthesis led to the formation of anisotropically truncated octahedrons as a result of oxidative etching and overgrowth of silver nanocubes. Three adjacent faces of the nanocube grew more rapidly than the three other faces, generating a non‐centrosymmetric structure (see picture).
The design and elaboration of a series of macrocyclic templates that exhibit a propensity to adopt a β‐strand‐like peptide‐backbone conformation led to potent and selective inhibitors of calpain 2. Macrocycle 1 retarded calcium‐induced opacification in an ovine‐lens culture assay and is a lead compound for the development of a drug for cataract treatment. Cbz=carbobenzyloxy.
