Synthetic sequel : The transition‐metal‐catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition is an established method for the construction of carbocyclic frameworks but is often plagued by poor selectivity. Recent literature paints a promising picture—a more general metal‐catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition can be accomplished intermolecularly using three separate alkynes to furnish highly substituted arenas (see scheme).

A novel selective palladium catalyst system based on bidentate 2,2′‐heteroarylarylphosphines and p‐TsOH has been developed for hydroformylation reactions (see scheme). By applying optimal conditions good to excellent regioselectivity is obtained for the hydroformylation of aliphatic and aromatic olefins. It is shown that a low acid concentration is crucial for obtaining high degrees of the linear isomer.

NHC with EWGs for RCM : Ruthenium complexes with two N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), one of them substituted with electron‐withdrawing groups (EWGs), are highly efficient (pre)catalysts for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted olefins and trisubstituted olefins by ring‐closing metathesis reactions (RCM, see scheme).

An enriching experience : Chiral phosphoric acids have been used to catalyze the title transformation for aromatic and aliphatic hemiaminal ethers. The process affords the corresponding products in good to high enantioselectivity (see scheme; Boc=tert‐butoxycarbonyl, G=aromatic group). The method enables facile access to highly enantioenriched 1,3‐diamine derivatives.

The aggregation and self‐assembly of square‐planar alkynylplatinum(II) complexes is induced by the use of a chiral polyacetylene with a helical conformation (see scheme). The chain helicity of the chiral polyacetylene under basic conditions has also been demonstrated to be enhanced by the presence of the positively charged platinum(II) complexes.
