It makes sense : Conjugated polymer nanoparticles doped with a platinum porphyrin dye exhibit bright phosphorescence that is highly sensitive to the concentration of molecular oxygen. The small size, extraordinary brightness, excellent sensitivity, and ratiometric emission, together with the demonstration of single‐particle sensing and cellular uptake, indicate the potential of the nanoparticle sensors for quantitative mapping of local molecular oxygen concentration.

Hex nut : An emerging synthetic approach based on metal–organic coordination‐polymer templates has been used to fabricate micro‐ and nanoscale crystals. By using a diverse range of molecular building blocks coupled with conventional synthetic techniques, it is possible to synthesize ZnO crystals with tailored sizes, shapes (such as hexagonal rings; see figure), and surface properties.

It′s what′s on the inside that counts : In some cases, the metallic impurities within residual catalyst metallic nanoparticle impurities, which remain in carbon nanotubes even after their purification, are responsible for the “electrocatalytic” properties of carbon nanotubes. This is demonstrated by using double‐walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) containing cobalt residual catalyst nanoparticle impurities, which themselves contain iron‐based impurities.

Direct protein functionalization provides synthetic antiferromagnetic nanoparticles with high chemical specificity and multifunctionality. These nanoparticle–protein conjugates function as improved magnetic labels for biological detection experiments, and exhibit tunable responses to a small external magnetic field gradient, thus allowing the observation of distinctive single nanoparticle motion.

Doing the hula twist? A photochemically stimulated inversion of an sp2‐hybridized oxygen atom upon simultaneous rotation of two adjacent bonds may be possible in a pure singlet excited potential energy surface in uninhibited fluid media (see scheme).

Entering the fold : A common structural motif in hydrolytic enzymes is the α,β‐hydrolase fold. The interconversion of one enzyme into another by introduction of mechanistically important residues is not enough; only substitution of a loop allows epoxide hydrolase activity in the esterase scaffold to be formed (see picture; structure comparison of epoxide hydrolases (green) with the esterase (orange)). The result is an enantioselective chimeric enzyme.

Continuous organocatalysis : Fast aldol and Mannich reactions require less catalyst when conducted in a microreactor. A proline tetrazole derivative (5–10 mol %) catalyzes asymmetric aldol reactions between various aromatic aldehydes and ketones in microreactor at 60 °C with reaction times ranging from 10 to 30 min.

Roll up : A peptide–dendron hybrid (PDH) is capable of self‐assembling into either a soluble nanotube or an amyloid‐like fibrillar network. The structures interconvert on adjusting the salt concentration or pH value. Their hydrophobic interfaces efficiently encapsulate hydrophobic molecules in water which can then be released by lowering the pH value.

Minty green : Zr–zeolite beta (Zr‐beta) directs the one‐pot catalytic cascade transformation of citral to menthols with high diastereoselectivity. The solid catalyst, a bifunctional Ni/Zr‐beta or a composite Zr‐beta–Ni/MCM‐41 system, is easily recovered and reused in this green synthetic method (see figure).

Breaking barriers : In agreement with experimental evidence, it was found by means of high‐level DFT calculations that the Cr(CO)3 metal fragment considerably reduces the reaction energy barrier—for both the concerted and stepwise reaction mechanisms (see graphic)—of the Diels–Alder reaction of butadiene on (5,5) carbon nanotubes.

Soluble InP and GaP Nanowires: Self‐Seeded,Solution–Liquid–Solid Synthesis and Electrical Properties
Zhaoping Liu Kai Sun Dr. Wen‐Bin Jian Prof. Dr. Dan Xu Yen‐Fu Lin Jiye Fang Prof. Dr. 《Chemistry (Weinheim an der Bergstrasse, Germany)》2009,15(18):4546-4552
A facile, self‐seeded , solution–liquid–solid growth of soluble InP and GaP nanowires with a very low amount of native point defects with respect to the carrier concentrations have been synthesized (see scheme) and characterized. They are potentially promising building blocks in optoelectronic applications.
