Towards polythiophene polyrotaxanes : The β‐substituted terthiophene [2]rotaxanes have been synthesized (see figure). Basic optical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized [2]rotaxanes are also reported.
Click to fill the gap : The in situ modular fabrication of molecular transport junctions in nanogaps generated by on‐wire lithography is achieved by using click chemistry (see picture). The formation of molecular junctions proceeds in high yields and can be used to test different molecules; the triazole group also maintains conjugation in the molecular wires. Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize the molecular assembly processes.
Caught on the hop : In multistep electron transfer (ET) reactions through peptides, aliphatic amino acids can also act as relay stations. With cysteine, the reaction occurs as a proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) with water used as a mediator for the proton transfer (see picture).
When the truth stands on one leg : Arsenate coordinates at the water–goethite interface in a predominately monodentate fashion (see picture), a finding that impacts oxoanion bioavailability and challenges theories of mineral dissolution and surface complexation.
Bound to stay heteroleptic : Grafting of homoleptic benzyl and amide calcium reagents onto silica affords well‐defined supported heteroleptic species, catalytically active in hydrosilylation, hydroamination, and styrene polymerization. The fact that attempts to generate a molecular model were thwarted by the Schlenk equilibrium affording the homoleptic compound (see scheme) emphasizes the importance of immobilization as an approach for the syntheses of heteroleptic calcium complexes.
This template will self‐destruct : A unique particle‐growth mechanism involves growth of new coordination polymers on the surface of initially formed hexagonal blocks and concomitant dissolution of the blocks to form hexagonal tubes (see scheme and scanning electron, optical, and fluorescence microscopy images). Calcination of the tubes yields ZnO particles of the same shape.
Suprapolymers : The synthesis of symmetrically end‐functionalized polymers in a single step has been developed by means of ring‐opening metathesis polymerization by using a bimetallic ruthenium initiator and functional chain terminators. Self‐assembly of the resulting polymers allows for the formation of supramolecular alternating block copolymers (see figure).
An adaptable approach : The first highly convergent stereoselective synthesis of feglymycin (see structure) and its enantiomer is based on the coupling of repeating peptide fragments. The use of weakly basic conditions throughout the synthesis suppressed the epimerization of sensitive aryl glycine units. Feglymycin has strong anti‐HIV activity as well as potent (previously identified as weak) antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
'Onium rings : Incorporation of the trivalent oxygen atom as a structural element within the tricyclic core of 1 – 3 imparts unprecedented stability to this “extraordinary” class of tertiary oxonium ions. Cation 1 is the least reactive and can be refluxed in water for 72 hours with no noticeable decomposition.
Rhenium does the job! A readily available rhenium complex efficiently catalyzed the direct Meyer–Schuster‐like rearrangement of different alkyl‐ and aryl‐substituted propargylic secondary and tertiary alcohols to the corresponding α,β‐unsaturated compounds, which were produced with virtually complete E stereoselectivity. The reaction proceeded under neutral conditions and no racemization of potentially enolizable stereocenters was observed.
Fixing a hole : Hydrothermal chemistry has been exploited in the preparation of a 3D framework material exhibiting 48 % accessible void volume and 1.5 % hydrogen uptake by weight at 120 kPa (see picture). The title compound also exhibits single‐chain magnetic behavior and reversible changes in magnetic properties upon solvation and desolvation.
Active RNase glycoprotein from three pieces : The glycoprotein enzyme ribonuclease C, which contains a complex saccharide N‐glycan, was synthesized by sequential native chemical ligation. An optimized ligation and isolation protocol allowed the efficient assembly and refolding of the 124 amino acid enzyme.
Tell your guests when it's time to go : When avidin caps are attached to biotinylated colloidal mesoporous silica, the four subunits of the protein avidin can each bind to a biotin moiety attached to the surface (see picture). The resulting material is a promising candidate for the design of smart detergents or drug‐delivery systems. The caps can be opened to release guest molecules by controlled enzymatic hydrolysis of the protein.
