A new way to make a bang : Several functionalized 1‐ethyl‐5‐aminotetrazoles, 1‐ethyl‐5‐nitrimino‐tetrazoles, and copper complexes have been synthesized and their chemical and energetic properties have been comprehensively characterized. The compounds belong to all classes of “energetic materials”: explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics.

By a flexible three‐component synthesis, alkoxy‐substituted enamides are easily available from lithiated alkoxyallenes, nitriles and carboxylic acids (see scheme). The treatment of these versatile intermediates with trifluoroacetic acid provided 5‐acetyloxazoles in moderate to good yields. Different substituents are possible at C‐2 and C‐5 and the 5‐acetyl group is a suitable handle for further synthetic transformations.

Soluble InP and GaP Nanowires: Self‐Seeded,Solution–Liquid–Solid Synthesis and Electrical Properties
Zhaoping Liu Kai Sun Dr. Wen‐Bin Jian Prof. Dr. Dan Xu Yen‐Fu Lin Jiye Fang Prof. Dr. 《Chemistry (Weinheim an der Bergstrasse, Germany)》2009,15(18):4546-4552
A facile, self‐seeded , solution–liquid–solid growth of soluble InP and GaP nanowires with a very low amount of native point defects with respect to the carrier concentrations have been synthesized (see scheme) and characterized. They are potentially promising building blocks in optoelectronic applications.

Origami peptides : A novel class of foldamers consisting of α/δ‐hybrid peptides has been investigated theoretically and experimentally by exploiting the rigidity of the side chain of a new δ‐amino acid prepared from D ‐glucose and D ‐xylose with a furanose side chain (see figure).

Recyclable organocatalysts : The first chiral DMAP analogue immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles is a highly active catalyst that is capable of the acylation of racemic sec‐alcohols under convenient, process‐scale friendly conditions (room temperature, 5 mol % loading, with acetic anhydride as the acylating agent) with excellent enantiodiscrimination. The catalyst is easily recovered and possesses unprecedented recyclability—in this study it was demonstrated to retain excellent activity and selectivity over 32 iterative cycles.

Codeposition of NO and O 2 diluted in Ne at 6 K yield a ON???OO complex that exhibit strong UV absorption. This complex is converted into NO3 radicals by UV irradiation, and is regenerated by radiation of visible light (see spectra).

Tuning structures : We report a synthetically simple yet structurally rich gelator that self‐assembles through hydrogen bonding under different cooling regimes into different nanoscale morphologies (see figure), which can be covalently captured and stabilised by alkene metathesis.

An ocean of discovery : The first total synthesis of the highly oxygenated, marine‐derived, natural product sporolide B has been achieved through a convergent strategy. The key steps involve a ruthenium‐catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition to assemble the indene structural motif and a thermally induced Diels–Alder‐type reaction to forge the macrocycle (see scheme).

Wheels on water? A waterwheel‐shaped porphyrin pentamer has been synthesized by palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions. The key intermediate is a boronate porphyrin, in which four boronic ester groups are directly attached to the meso‐positions.

Hydrated ion nanocalorimetry is used to measure reduction energies and H atom affinities of gaseous hydrated ions by determining the energy deposited into these nanodrops from the number of water molecules lost upon reduction by thermally generated electrons (see figure).

Spiders of the genus Argiope , such as Argiope lobata, contain polyamine toxins that are potent but nonselective blockers of glutamate receptors. However, by very subtle modifications of the structure of native toxins, it is possible to obtain selectivity for subtypes of these receptors, as described by K. Strømgaard and co‐workers in their Communication on page 3087 ff.

No sweat! The sweat in a latent fingerprint (LFP) can contain orally ingested drugs and their metabolites. In a new method for drug detection, primary antibodies(Abs) against drug metabolites are conjugated to magnetic nanoparticles (NPs). The LFP is incubated with the NPs, excess particles removed, and the LFP treated with a fluorescently labeled secondary antibody. Fluorescence imaging then allows characterization.
