Let's stick together : The gelation ability of a dendritic gelator has been enhanced by its complexation with a polyelectrolyte (see figure). This concept provides a route to construct novel functional or ordered materials by complexation of other low‐molecular‐mass functional species with polyelectrolytes.
Amphiphilic hybrid materials are formed from polymer‐coated semiconductor nanoparticles that simulate a surfactant‐like response (see picture). The strength and density of the surface coating are the key assembling forces driving a transition from single particles to cylindrical or vesicular superstructures.
Our Schiff has come in : A homochiral porous lamellar solid based on chiral unsymmetrical Schiff base metal complexes was assembled by using coordination and hydrogen bonds (see picture). The host features a flexible helical framework and chiral amphiphilic channel surfaces capable of multiple interactions with guest species.
Keeping their cool : Fabrication of a 2D weblike nanonetwork of gold was successfully demonstrated through a two‐step procedure including complexation of gold precursors to a weblike supramolecular assembly of surfactant followed by in situ reduction of the precursors to gold. Molecular assemblies stabilized by hydrogen bonding provided a sound template, leading to the highly integrated structure of gold through room‐temperature (cold) nanostructure fusion.
Organolithium chemistry! An overview of the structure formation principles and the strong structure–reactivity relationship of lithium organics is given. By means of the commonly used lithium bases the deaggregation of the oligomeric parent structures to small adducts is presented (see examples) and compared to the related chemistry of lithiosilanes.
Bromide is best : The first [2]rotaxane incorporating the triazolium anion‐binding motif is prepared using bromide anion templation. Preliminary anion‐binding investigations reveal that the rotaxane exhibits the rare selectivity preference for bromide over chloride ions.
Bringing order : A new class of periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) with a urea‐bridged organosilica precursor under acid‐catalyzed and inorganic‐salt‐assisted conditions was obtained. The large‐pore hybrid materials have ordered mesostructure with uniform pore size distributions, which can be seen from the TEM images.
Hydrated ion nanocalorimetry is used to measure reduction energies and H atom affinities of gaseous hydrated ions by determining the energy deposited into these nanodrops from the number of water molecules lost upon reduction by thermally generated electrons (see figure).
Shine a light with cyanates : A novel approach for the synthesis of urea complexes and homoleptic cyanates of alkaline earth metals and europium is described. The compounds have been fully characterized, including their magnetism and temperature‐dependent luminescence properties (see graphic).
Cohesion matters! The correlation between the conformational rigidity of the polyelectrolyte and the size and stability of the globular assembly is discussed in this review article. Some examples of models for the association of polyelectrolytes to globular assemblies are shown here.
Tuning structures : We report a synthetically simple yet structurally rich gelator that self‐assembles through hydrogen bonding under different cooling regimes into different nanoscale morphologies (see figure), which can be covalently captured and stabilised by alkene metathesis.
D ‐Fructose‐6‐phosphate aldolase (FSA) is a key biocatalyst for the alternative synthetic construction of biologically active products with known therapeutic and research interest or novel structures relevant to drug discovery. Novel aldol addition reactions of dihydroxyacetone and hydroxyacetone to a variety of aldehydes catalyzed by FSA are presented (see scheme).
Fully loaded : Noncovalent anchoring of liposomes into polymer multilayered films with cholesterol‐modified polymers allows the preparation of capsosomes—liposome‐compartmentalized polymer capsules (see picture). A quantitative enzymatic reaction confirmed the presence of active cargo within the capsosomes and was used to determine the number of subcompartments within this novel biomedical carrier system.
Special agents for protein capture : Iterative in situ click chemistry (see scheme for the tertiary ligand screen) and the one‐bead–one‐compound method for the creation of a peptide library enable the fragment‐based assembly of selective high‐affinity protein‐capture agents. The resulting ligands are water‐soluble and stable chemically, biochemically, and thermally. They can be produced in gram quantities through copper(I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition.
