Borenes and boranes : Silylaminoiminoborenes, such as depicted, were isolated after treatment of halogen triels with silylaminofluoroboranes. In addition, novel aryl‐ and silyl‐substituted diaminofluoroboranes were also prepared in order to substantiate this reaction route.
Roll up : A peptide–dendron hybrid (PDH) is capable of self‐assembling into either a soluble nanotube or an amyloid‐like fibrillar network. The structures interconvert on adjusting the salt concentration or pH value. Their hydrophobic interfaces efficiently encapsulate hydrophobic molecules in water which can then be released by lowering the pH value.
The chemical information stored in equilibrium mixtures of molecular species is larger than the sum of information carried by the individual molecules. Protonation equilibria in dilute dichloromethane solution of a shape‐persistent macrocycle bearing two 2,2′‐bipyridine units and two Coumarin 2 moieties (see figure) can be exploited to mimic decoding operations.
Diaminations are a girl's best friend : New reactions in the field of transition‐metal‐catalyzed diamination of olefins provide a powerful tool for the elaboration of more complex molecules bearing the 1,2‐diamine moiety. An overview of these methods, including asymmetric versions, is given.
A sense of cell‐being : Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are functionalized with bioactive monosaccharides to enable their use as biosensors. The glycosylated nanotube network is biocompatible and can interface with living cells (see scheme) to electronically detect biomolecular release with high temporal resolution and high sensitivity.
Colorful clusters : Silver nanoclusters consisting of only a few atoms exhibit large chemical‐environment‐responsive shifts of their optical absorption and emission bands, that is, large solvatochromism (see picture). The photophysical characteristics and electrochemiluminescence of the Ag clusters give them remarkable advantages over larger nanoparticles in applications such as molecular sensing.
The gauche effect that is induced upon reversible formation of an iminium ion (see structure: green F, blue N) provides a powerful method for the preorganization of transient intermediates that are central to secondary amine catalyzed processes. This phenomenon has been exploited in the design of a novel organocatalyst and is showcased in the stereoselective epoxidation of α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes.
Many components make light work : A novel synthetic strategy for the preparation of pyridines and isoquinolines in high chemo‐ and regioselectivity has been developed. By manipulating the reaction conditions, either product can be generated smoothly in a highly efficient and atom‐economic manner (see scheme).
A facile, self‐seeded , solution–liquid–solid growth of soluble InP and GaP nanowires with a very low amount of native point defects with respect to the carrier concentrations have been synthesized (see scheme) and characterized. They are potentially promising building blocks in optoelectronic applications.
Supramolecular chirality and liquid crystalline OFET : Achiral end‐capped oligothiophenes can be tuned to exhibit supramolecular chirality with unique striped textures showing distinct circular dichroism signals as well as a highly ordered SmE phase that leads to high hole carrier mobility.
Diffusion of single molecules of a substituted terrylene diimide dye in functionalized mesoporous silica films was monitored by single‐molecule fluorescence microscopy. By varying the chemical nature and density of the functional groups, the diffusion dynamics of the dye molecules can be controlled precisely. The picture shows a sketch of a dye molecule in a pore, diffusion data for different phenyl functionalization densities, and the trajectory of one molecule in a cyanopropyl‐functionalized film.
