Lighting up : A G‐quadruplex‐specific fluorescent probe was designed combining the specificity of the pyridodicarboxamide motif for guanine quadruplexes and the fluorescence properties of thiazole orange. While the assembly of the two partners through a flexible linker leads to a nonselective probe, merging them in a single, rigid scaffold leads to a dye that elicits the properties required for G‐quadruplex sensing.
A trap that closes with a “click” : The copper‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition can occur in different G‐quadruplex structures (see scheme). The species trapped by the click reaction can then be separated and analyzed. By using this approach, a DNA–RNA hybrid‐type G‐quadruplex structure formed by human telomeric DNA and RNA sequences was detected.
Ring the changes : Experimental Raman spectra of fluorinated and non‐fluorinated polyphenylenevinylenes are assigned according to quantum chemical calculations for oligomer model systems (see picture). Characteristic differences in the spectra can be traced back to strong inter‐ring distortion of the fluorinated compounds.
A general solution : In situ synchrotron X‐ray scattering in a high‐pressure pulsed injection reactor (see picture) shows that magnetite nucleation and growth are temporally separated. Gram‐scale crystalline, pure phase, superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized without surfactants in supercritical water in less than one hour using a laboratory‐scale continuous‐flow reactor.
Insider dealing : Self‐assembled hosts applied as “molecular flasks” can alter and control the reactivity and properties of molecules encapsulated within their well‐defined, confined spaces. A variety of functional hosts of differing sizes, shapes, and utility have been prepared by using the facile and modular concepts of self‐assembly.
A new way to make a bang : Several functionalized 1‐ethyl‐5‐aminotetrazoles, 1‐ethyl‐5‐nitrimino‐tetrazoles, and copper complexes have been synthesized and their chemical and energetic properties have been comprehensively characterized. The compounds belong to all classes of “energetic materials”: explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics.
Finely tuned optical properties : The optical properties of substituted protected catechol derivatives can be fine‐tuned (see scheme; TBDMS=tert‐butyldimethylsilyloxy). The DFT‐calculated polarisabilities are compared with experimental data.
The center of it all : An antitumor‐active trinuclear platinum complex forms unprecedented interstrand cross‐linked triadducts with 18‐mer DNA duplexes (see figure; complex in yellow with the platinum centers in red) and behaves differently from its dinuclear analogue.
Scan and deliver : By combining imaging‐based spectral/spatial 2D radiofrequency manipulations (see scheme, left) with Hadamard‐weighting principles, 2D NMR spectra can be retrieved within a single scan (right). This approach can give homo‐ or heteronuclear correlations with an enhanced sensitivity over conventional ultrafast 2D NMR spectroscopy.
High energy density materials with ethylene‐ and propylene bis(5‐nitroiminotetrazolate) as the anions are reported; all salts were fully characterized by IR, and 1H, 13C, and 15N NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analyses. In addition, the heats of formation (ΔHf) and the detonation pressures (P) and velocities (D) were calculated.
Bromide is best : The first [2]rotaxane incorporating the triazolium anion‐binding motif is prepared using bromide anion templation. Preliminary anion‐binding investigations reveal that the rotaxane exhibits the rare selectivity preference for bromide over chloride ions.
Don't cry! The attachment of ferrocene moieties on the surface of carbon nano‐onions influences the electrochemical properties of these moieties and the photophysical properties of the carbon nano‐onions (see figure). Quantum chemical calculations confirm that the spectral properties of carbon nano‐onions depend on their size and the degree of functionalisation.
Wheels on water? A waterwheel‐shaped porphyrin pentamer has been synthesized by palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions. The key intermediate is a boronate porphyrin, in which four boronic ester groups are directly attached to the meso‐positions.
Two‐step magnetic transitions : An azide‐bridged 1D MnIII coordination polymer with a unique single end‐on mode was prepared; it displayed atypical antiferromagnetic couplings and field‐induced two‐step magnetic transitions (see figure). The spin‐canted phenomenon in the antiferromagnetic chain complex plays a pivotal role in establishing the slow magnetic relaxation.
