Tungsten tryst : A 4‐H‐butatrienylidene complex of tungsten was successfully isolated and structurally characterized. It undergoes a unique self‐coupling, which leads to a dimer (see picture; P pink, O red) with a cross‐conjugated π system and with electrochemically and magnetically active metal centers.

Spontaneous formation of smectic and columnar structures was observed when spherical gold nanoparticles were functionalized with mesogenic thiols (see layered structure and X‐ray pattern of a sample in smectic phase). The particle ordering is stimulated by softening of the interparticle potential and flexibility for deformation of the grafting layer.

The complete encapsulation of ortho‐carborane by a fullerene‐like building‐block system consisting of pentaphosphaferrocene and CuICl leads to the formation of the spherical supermolecule C2B10H12§[{Cp*Fe(η5‐P5)}12(CuCl)20]. This product of template‐controlled aggregation represents the first example of a carbon‐free C80 analogue possessing icosahedral symmetry.

Solid‐state route to a cyclobutenone : Ruthenium perchlorocyclobutenonyl complex 2 is obtained by solid‐state photoisomerization of ruthenium trichloroacetyl acetylide complex 1 . The four‐membered ring is sufficiently robust that transfer of the intact ligand could be readily achieved in a reaction of 2 with an enyne. Cyclobutenedionyl complex 3 was obtained by hydrolysis of 2 in H2O/THF.

Lavender layers : A poly(p‐phenylene) anionic derivate and exfoliated Mg‐Al layered double hydroxide monolayers were assembled into ultrathin films with well‐defined blue fluorescence (see picture; the numbers indicate the number of bilayers), long‐range order, and high photostability. These films work as multiple quantum‐well structures for valence electrons.

Fullerene flakes : A diacetylene‐functionalized fullerene derivative self‐organizes into flakelike microparticles (see picture). Both the diacetylene and C60 moieties can be effectively cross‐linked, which leads to supramolecular materials with remarkable resistivity to solvent, heat, and mechanical stress. Moreover, the surface of the cross‐linked flakelike objects is highly durable and water‐repellent.

Down to the wire : A simple and effective method to synthesize silver nanowires through an ionic‐liquid‐assisted polyol process is developed (see scheme; scale bar=5 nm). The ionic liquids are tuned to provide the anisotropic growth of silver nanoparticles into nanowires.

Graft work : The first surface‐initiated and site‐specific palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki polycondensation that allows selective grafting and patterning of semiconducting and emissive poly[9,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)fluorene] ( 1 ) at room temperature is developed (see scheme). The pattering is demonstrated by AFM (see image).

Hex nut : An emerging synthetic approach based on metal–organic coordination‐polymer templates has been used to fabricate micro‐ and nanoscale crystals. By using a diverse range of molecular building blocks coupled with conventional synthetic techniques, it is possible to synthesize ZnO crystals with tailored sizes, shapes (such as hexagonal rings; see figure), and surface properties.

Choosy organomagnesium : Prochiral bis(bromoaryl)alcohols were desymmetrized by treatment with iPr2Mg and an enantiopure Li salt. The resulting arylmagnesium intermediate was trapped with electrophiles. Protonolysis and two follow‐up reactions provided the antihistaminic and anticholinergic drug (R)‐orphenadrine (see scheme).
