Weaving an intricate web : A stereoselective synthesis of (?)‐agelastatin A has been developed, which requires 11 steps from commercially available starting material. The application of a Rh‐catalyzed intramolecular olefin aziridination reaction and the subsequent manipulation of the resulting tricyclic intermediate (see scheme) punctuate this study.

(?)‐Dysibetaine has been synthesized in 11 steps from readily available L ‐malic acid (see scheme). The key step is a unique Ugi 4‐center‐3‐component cyclization reaction, where an ester group acts as the carboxylic acid component. The use of 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane as an ammonia equivalent and a specially designed isocyanide leads to an expeditious synthesis.

Heads or tails? The evolution of structural and electronic properties of tin–phthalocyanine films has been analyzed for sub‐monolayer to multilayer coverage using low‐temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Two molecular conformations are observed: randomly dispersed for the first layer, and islands with a single conformation in subsequent layers.

We're able! 1,n‐Glycols serve as synthetic equivalents to unstable dialdehydes in two‐directional carbonyl allylation from the alcohol oxidation level under iridium‐catalyzed transfer hydrogenation conditions. Iterative asymmetric allylation employing 1,3‐propanediol enables the rapid assembly of protected 1,3‐polyol substructures with exceptional levels of stereocontrol.

The fungus Rhizopus microsporus …? ; shown in the micrograph on the cover picture, harbors the endosymbiotic bacteria Burkholderia rhizoxinica that produces the antimitotic polyketide macrolide rhizoxin (see structure). In their Communication on page 5001 ff. , C. Hertweck and co‐workers show that the enzyme rhizoxin polyketide synthase is uniquely capable of introducing a β branch (highlighted by the magnifying glass) by a Michael‐type addition of a malonyl unit to an acryloyl intermediate.

The helical mechanoclinic deformation of a main‐chain chiral smectic elastomer, which is prepared by a crosslinking reaction under twist deformation, is investigated. The twist deformation induces a layer tilt angle that depends on the handedness of twist. The layer tilt angle in the right‐handedly twisted elastomer, of which the handedness is consistent with that of the helix in the SmC* phase of the non‐crosslinked backbone polymer, is estimated to be up to 16° at room temperature, although that in the left‐handedly twisted elastomer is less than several degrees. The experiments provide evidence of chiral coupling between tilt and twist for helical mechanoclinic deformation in the chiral smectic system.

The chemical control of cell division has attracted much attention in the areas of single cell‐based biology and high‐throughput screening platforms. A mussel‐inspired cytocompatible encapsulation method for achieving a “cell‐division control” with cross‐linked layer‐by‐layer (LbL) shells is developed. Catechol‐grafted polyethyleneimine and hyaluronic acid are chosen as polyelectrolytes for the LbL process, and the cross‐linking of polyelectrolytes is performed at pH 8.5. Cell division is controlled by the number of the LbL nanolayers and cross‐linking reaction. We also suggest a new measuring unit, , for quantifying “cell‐division timing” based on microbial growth kinetics.

A spin‐crossover cluster with the {FeII4O4} core structure is presented by D. Y. Wu, O. Sato et al. in their Communication on page 1475 ff. The cluster is synthesized by self‐assembly and shows an abrupt spin transition, giving two high‐spin and two low‐spin states. It exhibits complete light‐induced excited spin‐state trapping effects. Importantly, synergy effects between the magnetic interaction and spin transition operate in the cluster.

Fleetingly formyl : A new rhodium‐catalyzed hydroformylation reaction of N‐allyl oxazolidines, carried out under a CO/H2 atmosphere, followed by a diastereoselective deformylative cyclization affords hexahydropyrrolo[2,1‐b]oxazoles in good yields. The reaction proceeds by a unique hydroformylation–deformylation sequence in which the formyl group virtually substitutes for the {CH2? O} fragment of the oxazolidine heterocycle.

Bonded or not bonded? An ab initio valence bond study of [1.1.1]propellane shows that the two bridgehead carbons are linked by a strong and direct σ bond that is neither classically covalent nor classically ionic, but rather a charge‐shift bond, in which the covalent–ionic resonance energy plays the major role. As such, the central bond of [1.1.1]propellane closely resembles the single bond of difluorine.
