Pass the salt, please! State‐of‐the‐art computations indicate that the stacking complex of a guanine quartet and an adenine quartet (G4A4) can function as a potent ditopic receptor for NaCl in aqueous solution (see picture; Na+, Cl? yellow, O red, N blue, C black, H white).

To “B” or not to “B” : The unusual bonding of boron in organoboranes or oligoboron clusters is not only apparent in diamagnetic molecules but also in paramagnetic systems, including mixed‐valent species and oligoborane/carborane cluster radicals. The picture shows the singly occupied molecular orbital of the radical ion [C4B8R4H8].?, determined by DFT calculations.

Oxidizing gold? A gold(I)/gold(III) catalytic cycle is essential for the first oxidative cross‐coupling reaction in gold catalysis. By using Selectfluor for gold(I) oxidation, this chemistry reveals the synthetic potential of incorporating gold(I)/gold(III) catalytic cycles into contemporary gold chemistry and promises a new area of gold research by merging powerful gold catalysis and oxidative metal‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions.

Ring any bells? The differential capacitance curve of Au(100) in neat [BMI]BF4 (BMI=1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium) ionic liquid has a bell‐shaped feature (see picture). The adsorption of BMI+ shows a disorder–order transition and depends on the structure of the surface. Ordered adsorption in a micelle‐like structure stabilizes the underlying Au surface.

Chiral 1,2‐diols have been prepared from α‐aminoxylated aldehydes or cyclohexanone and Grignard reagents with L ‐proline or its tetrazole derivative as the catalyst. The presence of the ate complex of CeCl3?2 LiCl is essential for the high overall yields and good selectivities (see scheme; DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide, THF=tetrahydrofuran, Tol=tolyl).

How are dihydropyridines like indoles? Both groups of compounds have similar nucleophilicity parameters N and are therefore suitable substrates for iminium‐catalyzed reactions of α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes. The N parameters of 1,4‐dihydropyridines were derived from the rates of hydride transfer reactions to benzhydrylium ions (see scheme).

From zero to hero? Sulfoxides are generally not considered useful ligand entities in asymmetric metal catalysis. However, a chiral disulfoxide as a chelating ligand in the rhodium‐catalyzed 1,4‐addition of aryl boronic acids to cyclic, α,β‐unsaturated ketones and esters gives impressive catalytic results, thus opening the door to future applications of this new chiral ligand class.

Ringing the changes : The total synthesis of the title compound centers around a novel strategy that employs a nickel(0)–phosphine complex and triethyl borane in an efficient closure of a 14‐membered ring through C? C bond formation (see scheme; cod=cyclooctadiene). The synthesis was accomplished in 10 steps and in approximately 9 % overall yield.

Although chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common adult leukemia in Western world, it remains incurable with conventional chemotherapeutic agents. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐related apoptosis‐inducing ligand (TRAIL) is an antitumor candidate in cancer therapy. This study examines the proapoptotic effects of poly(propylene imine) (PPI) glycodendrimers modified with the maltotriose residues (PPI‐G4‐OS‐Mal‐III and PPI‐G4‐DS‐Mal‐III) on the TNF family in CLL cells. The combination of an understanding of the signaling pathways associated with CLL and the development of a molecular profiling is a key issue for the design of personalized approaches to therapy. Gene expression is determined with two‐color microarray 8 × 60K. The findings indicate that PPI‐G4‐OS/DS‐Mal‐III affect gene expression from the TRAIL apoptotic pathway and exert a strong effect on CLL cells comparable with fludarabine. Dendrimer‐targeted technology may well prove to bridge the gap between the ineffective treatment of today and the effective personalized therapy of the future.

Check M(etal)ate: The chessboard and the figures represent a special reaction in which different low‐polarity metals can metalate arenes directly when they are brought into the right position. In a combination of queen (sodium) and knight (chromium or iron), it is possible for the knight (usually the weaker piece) to make a direct deadly hit on the king (benzene) in this game of elemental chess.

Taking shortcuts : A remarkably short and high‐yielding asymmetric total synthesis of (?)‐oseltamivir takes advantage of organocatalysis and single‐pot domino operations. The target, known as the drug Tamiflu, is prepared efficiently in a short time, and also its derivatives can be synthesized effectively.
