The novel Yb succinate metal–organic framework exhibits a reversible single‐crystal to single‐crystal polymorphic transformation (see figure) when it is heated above 130 °C, returning to its initial form when back at room temperature. This transformation produces a change in the coordination sphere of the Yb atoms, which influences the catalytic activity of the material.
Heparin detective : Silica nanoparticles functionalised with ion‐channel scaffolds were prepared and used for the chromofluorogenic sensing of heparin in aqueous environments (see figure). The surface of the nanoparticles was functionalised with polyamines (binding sites) and thiols. The reaction of a dye (squaraine) with the surface thiol groups was selectively inhibited by the coordination of heparin with the partly protonated polyamines.
Tungsten tryst : A 4‐H‐butatrienylidene complex of tungsten was successfully isolated and structurally characterized. It undergoes a unique self‐coupling, which leads to a dimer (see picture; P pink, O red) with a cross‐conjugated π system and with electrochemically and magnetically active metal centers.
Two different mechanisms : Shift 1,2‐isomerization and isomerization via the disproportionation reaction are investigated for aromatic hydrocarbons over acidic mordenite zeolite by using our own n‐layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics (ONIOM) scheme. The picture shows a schematic energy profile for the isomerization of toluene catalyzed by acidic mordenite.
This template will self‐destruct : A unique particle‐growth mechanism involves growth of new coordination polymers on the surface of initially formed hexagonal blocks and concomitant dissolution of the blocks to form hexagonal tubes (see scheme and scanning electron, optical, and fluorescence microscopy images). Calcination of the tubes yields ZnO particles of the same shape.
A new polarizing agent with superior performance in dynamic nuclear polarization experiments is introduced, and utilizes two TEMPO (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl) moieties connected through a rigid spiro tether (see structure). The observed NMR signal intensities were enhanced by a factor of 1.4 compared to those of TOTAPOL, a previously described TEMPO‐based biradical with a flexible tether.
Shall we dance? Within the proposed mechanism for the palladium‐catalyzed title reaction, the strained alkene norbornene (or norbornadiene) enters and exits the catalytic cycle in a catalytic “square dance”, acting as both a promoter and a coupling partner in the formation of four carbon–carbon bonds, two of them by challenging C? H activation processes.
Boxing clever : Direct conversion of a terminal alkyne group into a β‐methoxyacrylate is realized with the aid of the bis(oxazoline) ligand (box). Acetyl and ketal protecting groups, free hydroxy groups, and acid‐sensitive glycosidic bonds are not affected under the reaction conditions. The one‐pot synthesis of (±)‐dihydrokawain from the homopropargyl alcohol is also achieved. tfa=trifluoroacetate
Triethylamine hydroiodide crystals were formed during Sonogashira reactions; after complete reaction the solution retains a characteristic light color (see picture). Very sluggish Sonogashira reactions of electron‐enriched aryl diiodides have been carried out in high yield in an oxygen‐free, two‐chamber reaction system. The formation of triethylamine hydroiodide crystals was monitored to determine the completion of reaction.
Shining metal cups : A luminescent tube of triangular cross‐section and stoppered by a silver ion (see picture: Re yellow, N blue, O red) is formed in two steps from commercial materials. The silver ion can be removed to give a tube, and both species are potential hosts for small ions and molecules; a change in luminescence is triggered by the encapsulation of silver.
Crystal‐clear structures : The first crystal structures of organometallic pincer–cutinase hybrids (see figure) provide insight into the 3D structural arrangement of both the protein and the organometallic pincer moiety, and reveal different binding modes for different pincers.
