Metal lite : High‐resolution neutron powder diffraction data reveals that the body‐centered cubic crystal structure of lithium(0)tetraamine transforms to a simple cubic structure below 22 K. The detailed structure determinations will allow new insights into the coupled structural and electronic properties of the lightest metal.
Scan and deliver : By combining imaging‐based spectral/spatial 2D radiofrequency manipulations (see scheme, left) with Hadamard‐weighting principles, 2D NMR spectra can be retrieved within a single scan (right). This approach can give homo‐ or heteronuclear correlations with an enhanced sensitivity over conventional ultrafast 2D NMR spectroscopy.
Dramatic rate enhancement of reductive elimination of [Ar‐Pd‐C] was observed in the presence of a phosphine/electron‐deficient olefin ligand. Through systematic kinetic investigations of the Negishi coupling of ethyl 2‐iodobenzoate with alkylzinc chlorides (see scheme), the rate constants for reductive elimination of [Ar‐Pd‐C] were determined to be greater than 0.3 s?1, which is about four or five orders of magnitude greater than values reported previously.
Spiders of the genus Argiope , such as Argiope lobata, contain polyamine toxins that are potent but nonselective blockers of glutamate receptors. However, by very subtle modifications of the structure of native toxins, it is possible to obtain selectivity for subtypes of these receptors, as described by K. Strømgaard and co‐workers in their Communication on page 3087 ff.
Three novel large polyazamacrocycles containing two 1,10‐phenanthroline units connected by different polyamine spacers have been synthesised and their protonated forms used as receptors for several aromatic carboxylate anions. The receptors bind to the anions in a 1:1 stoichiometry and exhibit remarkable binding selectivity (see figure). Analysis shows that molecular recognition is governed by π–π stacking interactions and multiple N? H???O?C hydrogen bonds.
In‐source oxidation : In‐source photocatalytic redox reactions for inducing peptide fragmentation are achieved on a TiO2‐derived target plate during laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry in the presence of samples and glucose acting as both an electron donor and a hole conductor (see scheme).
Meeting the demand for sugars : The importance of oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates in biological systems has stimulated a need to access significant amounts of these compounds. Much effort has been devoted to the stereoselective generation of the key glycosidic bond, both between carbohydrate residues (see scheme) and to the aglycone. Various methodologies are now available for the efficient synthesis of structurally defined complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates.
Propelling magnetism : Supramolecular organization leads to a remarkable dodecanuclear {Cu3Dy3}2 cluster with a “double–propeller” shape (see picture). The linkages of the CuDy units, both intramolecular and supramolecular, appear to be responsible for a drastic change in the single molecule magnetic behavior.
