Let's drink to that! Two alcohols (one primary and one secondary) can be coupled in an atom‐efficient process by a hydrogen‐autotransfer catalytic system in the form of silver subnanoclusters supported on γ‐Al2O3. The recyclable heterogeneous catalyst promoted the one‐pot C? C cross‐coupling in the presence of a catalytic amount of the weak base Cs2CO3 (see reaction mechanism).

Efficient couplings using equimolar quantities of each coupling partner and multiple C? H bond arylation reactions are achieved with an Ir‐based catalytic system for the C? H bond arylation of electron‐rich heteroarenes with iodoarenes to construct extended π‐systems. The dramatic ligand effect on reaction efficiency leads to the discovery that Crabtree's catalyst (see scheme) is the optimal catalyst precursor.

Ring any bells? The differential capacitance curve of Au(100) in neat [BMI]BF4 (BMI=1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium) ionic liquid has a bell‐shaped feature (see picture). The adsorption of BMI+ shows a disorder–order transition and depends on the structure of the surface. Ordered adsorption in a micelle‐like structure stabilizes the underlying Au surface.

Chalcogen‐transfer reagents? The bonding in the dicationic rings C2N2E2+ (see picture) differs from that in N‐heterocyclic carbenes and their isovalent p‐block analogues in accommodating a lone pair of electrons with π symmetry, as well as σ symmetry, on the chalcogen center. The labile electrophilic chalcogenium dications (E2+) are potentially versatile chalcogen‐transfer reagents in reactions with a variety of inorganic and organic substrates.

Two new “H” type of indole‐based chromophores were designed and successfully introduced to the polymeric system, the resultant polymers demonstrated enhanced NLO effects, good processability, thermal stability and nearly excellent transparency, indicating the advantages of “H” type chromophore moieties. And they could be promising candidates for the practical applications as new photonic materials.

Amorphization tunes acidity : Pseudo‐bridging silanols, suggested as versatile Brønsted acid groups by molecular modeling studies, are obtained by shifted hydrolysis of Si? O? Al bridges formed by the thermal treatment of silica deposited on γ‐Al2O3 (100), and appear under given pretreatment conditions. Demixing of part of the silica from the aluminosilicate phase is predicted upon excess water adsorption.

Chiral 1,2‐diols have been prepared from α‐aminoxylated aldehydes or cyclohexanone and Grignard reagents with L ‐proline or its tetrazole derivative as the catalyst. The presence of the ate complex of CeCl3?2 LiCl is essential for the high overall yields and good selectivities (see scheme; DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide, THF=tetrahydrofuran, Tol=tolyl).
