Solid‐state route to a cyclobutenone : Ruthenium perchlorocyclobutenonyl complex 2 is obtained by solid‐state photoisomerization of ruthenium trichloroacetyl acetylide complex 1 . The four‐membered ring is sufficiently robust that transfer of the intact ligand could be readily achieved in a reaction of 2 with an enyne. Cyclobutenedionyl complex 3 was obtained by hydrolysis of 2 in H2O/THF.
MOF on MOF: Core–shell porous coordination polymer (PCP) crystals are fabricated at the single‐crystal level by epitaxial growth in solution. Synchrotron X‐ray diffraction measurements unveiled the structural relationship between the shell crystal and the core crystal, where in‐plane rotational epitaxial growth compensates the difference in lattice constant.
Lighting up new platinum anticancer complexes : Photoactivation of a platinum(IV) diazido anticancer complex in the presence of a derivative of imidazole, an important constituent of biomolecules, gives surprising photoproducts, including a tetrakis imidazole platinum(II) adduct (see figure), together with free azide, dioxygen and ammonia.
Living on the edge : Three‐dimensional reconstructions from electron tomography data recorded from Au/Ce0.50Tb0.12Zr0.38O2?x catalysts show that gold nanoparticles (see picture; yellow) are preferentially located on stepped facets and nanocrystal boundaries. An epitaxial relationship between the metal and support plays a key role in the structural stabilization of the gold nanoparticles.
A novel screening approach based on an oligonucleotide‐addressing enzyme assay enables multiplexed simultaneous profiling of DNA polymerases in nanoliter volumes in terms of their different properties. This approach was used to identify enzymes with altered properties out of a library of protein mutants.
Nanochemical printmaking : Colloidal lithography paves a powerful nanochemical way for patterning on planar substrates and microparticles. The feature size can easily be scaled down to 100 nm by reducing the diameter of the microspheres and the feature shape diversified by the crystalline structure of a colloidal crystal mask, the mask etching time, the incidence angle of the vapor beam, and the mask registry (the azimuth angle of the vapor beam).
Propelling magnetism : Supramolecular organization leads to a remarkable dodecanuclear {Cu3Dy3}2 cluster with a “double–propeller” shape (see picture). The linkages of the CuDy units, both intramolecular and supramolecular, appear to be responsible for a drastic change in the single molecule magnetic behavior.
A drug of two halves : New artificial compounds composed of a macrosphelide core skeleton and an epothilone side chain were designed and synthesized. These compounds were more potent inducers of apoptosis than the parent natural‐type macrosphelides.
Divide and conquer : Polymer nanoparticles with phase‐separation structures prepared with block copolymers and homopolymer blends were used to fabricate unique suprapolymer structures by cross‐linking one polymer moiety and dissolving the other (see scheme; PI=polyisoprene, PSt=polystyrene).
An anti trihydroxycarbenium ion is revealed to be the gas‐phase structure of protonated carbonic acid by IR multiple‐photon dissociation spectroscopy (see picture for calculated structure and comparison of experimental and computed spectra). Deprotonation yields anti‐H2CO3 with a nominal gas‐phase basicity of 724 kJ mol?1.
