The Legendre–Stirling numbers

The Legendre–Stirling numbers are the coefficients in the integral Lagrangian symmetric powers of the classical Legendre second-order differential expression. In many ways, these numbers mimic the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind which play a similar role in the integral powers of the classical second-order Laguerre differential expression. In a recent paper, Andrews and Littlejohn gave a combinatorial interpretation of the Legendre–Stirling numbers. In this paper, we establish several properties of the Legendre–Stirling numbers; as with the Stirling numbers of the second kind, they have interesting generating functions and recurrence relations. Moreover, there are some surprising and intriguing results relating these numbers to some classical results in algebraic number theory.

Degenerate Bernoulli polynomials, generalized factorial sums, and their applications

We prove a general symmetric identity involving the degenerate Bernoulli polynomials and sums of generalized falling factorials, which unifies several known identities for Bernoulli and degenerate Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. We use this identity to describe some combinatorial relations between these polynomials and generalized factorial sums. As further applications we derive several identities, recurrences, and congruences involving the Bernoulli numbers, degenerate Bernoulli numbers, generalized factorial sums, Stirling numbers of the first kind, Bernoulli numbers of higher order, and Bernoulli numbers of the second kind.     

On a logarithmic integral and the moments of order statistics from the Weibull-geometric and half-logistic families of distributions

We provide an explicit analytical solution for a logarithmic integral in terms of the Lerch transcendent function together with the generalized Stirling numbers of the first kind. For some special cases of interest in statistical applications, the explicit solution can be expressed in terms of the polylogarithm function together with the aforementioned Stirling numbers. As a consequence, we obtain explicit expressions for the moments of order statistics from the half-logistic distribution, the Weibull-geometric distribution and the long-term Weibull-geometric distribution, which include as particular cases the extended exponential-geometric distribution and the long-term extended exponential-geometric distribution, among others. These analytical expressions are useful for computational purposes.     

Some combinatorial identities via Fibonacci numbers

The Pascal matrix and the Stirling matrices of the first kind and the second kind obtained from the Fibonacci matrix are studied, respectively. Also, we obtain combinatorial identities from the matrix representation of the Pascal matrix, the Stirling matrices of the first kind and the second kind and the Fibonacci matrix.

For the horizontal generating functions P_n(z)=∑ⁿ_k=1 S(n, k) z^k of the Stirling numbers of the second kind, strong asymptotics are established, as n→∞. By using the saddle point method for Q_n(z)=P_n(nz) there are two main results: an oscillating asymptotic for z(−e, 0) and a uniform asymptotic on every compact subset of \[−e, 0]. Finally, an Airy asymptotic in the neighborhood of −e is deduced.

Yet another way of calculating moments of the Kesten's distribution and its consequences for Catalan numbers and Catalan triangles

We calculate moments of the so-called Kesten distribution by means of the expansion of the denominator of the density of this distribution and then integrate all summands with respect to the semicircle distribution. By comparing this expression with the formulae for the moments of Kesten's distribution obtained by other means, we find identities involving polynomials whose power coefficients are closely related to Catalan numbers, Catalan triangles, binomial coefficients. Finally, as applications of these identities we obtain various interesting relations between the aforementioned numbers, also concerning Lucas, Fibonacci and Fine numbers.
