The infrared reflectivity of Cd2Nb2O7 single crystal was studied in the temperature interval of 10-540 K, together with complementary dielectric measurements. A ferroelectric soft mode was revealed above the ferroelectric phase transition at T c = 196 K coupled with a central-mode type dispersion in the near-millimetre range. This proves the mixed displacive and order-disorder nature of the transition. Below T c many new modes were detected due to lowering of the symmetry, especially below the previously suggested incommensurate transition at 85 K. Discussion of the possible phase transitions based on symmetry considerations is presented with the conclusion that the ferroelectric transition is proper with the F1u symmetry of the order parameter, whereas the intermediate ferroelastic transition is improper and triggered by the coupling with the ferroelectric order parameter. The dielectric permittivity ε - i of SrTi 18O 3 (STO18) is studied under a dc electric field E as a function of the temperature, T. In ε vs. T, a double-peak is found when 0 < E < 30 KV/m. While the peak at high-T is attributed to the smeared ferroelectric phase transition, the low-T one is induced by domain wall motion. The transverse Ising model including an external homogeneous and quenched random-fields is successfully used to describe both the smeared phase transition and the domain wall response in the low-T domain state. The calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. Received 4 January 2002 / Received in final form 25 March 2002 Published online 19 July 2002  相似文献

Neutron powder diffraction was employed to study the pressure effect on the magnetic transition in the pseudobinary Laves-phase compound Er0.57Y0.43Co2 and to determine the magnetic moments of the Er- and Co-subsystems. Our studies reveal that the onset of long-range magnetic order for both the localized 4 f (Er) and itinerant 3 d (Co) electron moments appears at about the same temperature at ambient pressure. The pressure effect on Tc is found to be negative and equal for both sublattices, namely T c / p ∼ - 0.4 K/kbar. The values of the magnetic moments of the Er and the Co ions are found = 5.40±0.15μ B /atom, = 0.50±0.07μ B /atom and 5.35±0.15μ B /atom, 0.37±0.09μ B /atom, for p = 0 and 6 kbar, respectively. Our experimental results give evidence for short-range magnetic order formation at temperatures already above Tc and for a coexistence short- and long-range order below Tc down to 4 K. Nonlinear dielectric response of antiferroelectric liquid crystals has been studied in the smectic Cα* (SmCα*) phase. The linear dielectric spectrum shows a single relaxation of Debye type and its relaxation frequency is as high as one hundred kHz. The profile of the third-order nonlinear dielectric spectrum varies in complex fashion with temperature. In the vicinity of the SmA-SmCα* phase transition, experimentally obtained nonlinear spectra are well described by those calculated with phenomenological theory of Landau type. The soft mode of the SmCα* phase shows critical slowing-down near the transition temperature. In the lower-temperature region of the SmCα* phase, the contribution from the soft mode of the SmCα* phase reduces and the other relaxation mode with Debye-type spectrum appears at several hundred Hz in the nonlinear spectrum. The appearance of this low-frequency mode suggests that the cooperative fluctuation of directors over long range exists in the SmCα* phase. Polycrystalline two-layered perovskite La2.5-xK0.5+xMn2O 7 + δ (0 < x < 0.5) samples have been prepared by a modified sol-gel method and their magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric effects have been studied. A large deviation between the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature (T ρ ) and the magnetic transition temperature (TC) is observed. Large magnetoresistance (MR) effects with Δρ/ρ of 40% at 12 kOe are obtained in wide temperature ranges. The maximum of the magnetic entropy change peaks at its Curie temperature (TC), far above its MI transition temperature (T ρ ). The large magnetic entropy change (1.4 J/kg.K) is obtained in the sample La2.5-xK0.5+xMn2O 7 + δ (x = 0.35) upon 10 kOe applied magnetic field. Motivated by recent experiments demonstrating suppression of ferroelectricity with pressure in SrTi18O3, the dynamics of the phase transition mechanism are reinvestigated within a nonlinear polarizability model. For temperatures far above the phase transition polar micro domains are formed which increase in size with decreasing temperature to freeze out at Tc without forming long range order. Experimentally, soft mode dynamics are simultaneously observed, evidencing that displacive and order/disorder features coexist. In the ferroelectric phase both components persist whereby an incomplete and inhomogeneous ferroelectric state is formed.  相似文献

The phase front during the 218 K transition in KD2PO4 crystals under a thermal gradient perpendicular to the c ferroelectric axis is observed to have a factory-roof shape. This shape is studied versus the magnitude of Ge in samples cut with faces in (100), (010), (001) planes or in ( 0), (110), (001) ones. A geometric approach as well as the calculation of the elastic-strain energy caused by lattice misfits along the phase front demonstrate the incoherent interface nature of the phase front. Furthemore, the results and their interpretation allow to predict the sign of the lattice deformation u xx ( > 0). Received 25 April 2002 Published online 29 November 2002  相似文献

The magnetic excitations in the antiferromagnetic phase of HoNi2B2C are studied by inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals for the first time. Spectra measured at constant T = 2 K along symmetry directions of the reciprocal space are well explained in terms of crystal electric field (CEF) magnetic excitons within the J = 8 ground state multiplet of Ho3+. Very modest bandwidth with planar energy dispersion describes the magnetic exciton dynamics. A perturbative model approach consisting of the CEF states in the effective exchange mean-field provides a simple but applicable characterization of the experimental observations. The microscopic determination of the relevant exchange parameters is discussed in connection with previous works on the subject. We propose a Ginzburg-Landau phenomenological model for the dependence of the critical temperature on microscopic strain in tetragonal high-T c cuprates. Such a model is in agreement with the experimental results for LSCO under epitaxial strain, as well as with the hydrostatic pressure dependence of T c in most cuprates. In particular, a nonmonotonic dependence of T c on hydrostatic pressure, as well as on in-plane or apical microstrain, is derived. From a microscopic point of view, such results can be understood as due to the proximity to an electronic topological transition (ETT). In the case of LSCO, we argue that such an ETT can be driven by a strain-induced modification of the band structure, at constant hole content, at variance with a doping-induced ETT, as is usually assumed. The low temperature magnetic and transport properties of the Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xNixO3 manganites ( 0≤ x ≤0.1) have been investigated. The presence of Ni hinders the charge and orbital ordering observed in Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and favors the creation of ferromagnetic regions, leading to phase separation. The ferromagnetic fractions induced by the Ni substitution have been estimated from magnetization measurements, they are large and reach 40% for 4% of Ni. Steps are observed in the M ( H ) and ρ( H ) curves of all the samples at T < 5 K. They are similar to the steps observed in Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xMxO3, where M is a non magnetic cation (Mg2+, Ga3+,...), and for which the ferromagnetic fractions are very small (less than 2%), however, their appearance is restricted to lower temperatures (T < 5 K) with Ni dopant than with non magnetic cations. This study shows that steps can be observed in a wide range of phase-separated systems, even when the ferromagnetic fraction is very large. The paper presents the results of the investigation of dielectric dispersion in monoclinic telluric acid ammonium phosphate crystal over the frequency range 1 MHz to 77 GHz. It is shown that ferroelectric dispersion of the Debye type along the direction perpendicular to the plane (101) occurs in the frequency range 108 to 1011 Hz and is caused by a single relaxational soft mode. The relaxational soft mode is caused by the flipping motion of protons between two potential minima in a hydrogen bond. The frequency of the flipping proton mode in the paraelectric phase varies according to vs = 0.94 (TTo ) GHz and decreases to 1.75 GHz at Tc = 317.3 K. The relaxational mode gives the main contribution to the high static dielectric permittivity of this crystal which fits the Curie-Weiss law. The results confirm the order-disorder nature of a proper ferroelectric phase transition of second order.  相似文献

Recent experiments have demonstrated that the dynamics in liquids close to the glass transition temperature is strongly heterogeneous. The characteristic size of these heterogeneities has been measured to be a few nanometers at T g. We extend here a recent model for describing the heterogeneous nature of the dynamics which allows both to derive this length scale and the right orders of magnitude of the heterogeneities of the dynamics close to the glass transition. Our model allows then to interpret quantitatively small probes diffusion experiments. A new band, populated by the spontaneous fission of 248Cm and studied by means of prompt γ-ray spectroscopy using the EUROGAM2 array, was observed in 99Zr. The 1038.8 keV band head with a half-life T 1/2 = 54(10) ns is interpreted as a K-isomer, corresponding to the 9/2[404] neutron-hole excitation. It is the first observation of this orbital in the mass A ∼ 100 region. The quadrupole moment, Q 0 = 3.9(3) eb deduced for the new band indicates a large deformation of β = 0.41, which is produced by a specific shape-coexistence mechanism, known in other regions and now found in the A ∼ 100 nuclei. Photoinduced IR absorption measurements are reported on WO3. A photoinduced midinfrared small polaron peak centered at 4800 cm-1 (0.59 eV) was observed. The data were analyzed in the framework of the photon-assisted small-polaron hopping theory and briefly compared to previously published infrared absorption measurements in WO3 and photoinduced IR absorption measurements in high T c cuprates. The magnetic transport properties have been measured for La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3 ( 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.14) system. It was found that the transition temperature T p almost linearly moves to higher temperature as H increases. Electron spin resonance confirms that above T p , there exist ferromagnetic clusters. From the magnetic polaron point of view, the shift of T p vs. H was understood, and it was estimated that the size of the magnetic polaron is of 9.7 ∼ 15.4 ? which is consistent with the magnetic correlation length revealed by the small-angle neutron-scattering technique. The transport properties at temperatures higher than T p conform to the variable-range hopping mechanism. The lattice QCD studies indicate that the critical temperature T c ≃ 260-280 MeV of the deconfinement phase transition in quenched QCD is considerably smaller than the lowest-lying glueball mass m G ≃ 1500-1700 MeV, i.e., T cm G. As a consequence of this large difference, the thermal excitation of the glueball in the confinement phase is strongly suppressed by the statistical factor e -mG/Tc ≃ 0.00207 even near TT c. We consider its physical implication, and argue the abnormal feature of the deconfinement phase transition in quenched QCD from the statistical viewpoint. To appreciate this, we demonstrate a statistical argument of the QCD phase transition using the recent lattice QCD data. From the phenomenological relation between T c and the glueball mass, the deconfinement transition is found to take place in quenched QCD before a reasonable amount of glueballs is thermally excited. In this way, quenched QCD reveals a question “what is the trigger of the deconfinement phase transition ?” Received: 18 November 2002 / Accepted: 4 February 2003 / Published online: 29 April 2003  相似文献

Single crystals of U(Ni1-xPdx)2Si2 with x = 0.05, 0.09 and 0.135 have been grown. Magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields in order to study stability of magnetic phases in the solid solutions between UNi2Si2 and UPd2Si2 with a special emphasis on the type of ground state. In UPd2Si2 the simple AFI-type antiferromagnetic structure of U moments is observed at low temperatures. UNi2Si2 adopts the uncompensated AF structure (UAF) with the + + - stacking of U moments along the c-axis and consequently this compound exhibits a spontaneous magnetization corresponding to 1/3 of the U moment. The substitution of Pd for Ni leads to a rapid decay of the spontaneous magnetization. The evolution of magnetization and electrical resistivity behavior with Pd doping is tentatively attributed to the coexistence of the AF-I and UAF phases in the ground state of U(Ni0.91Pd0.09)2Si2 and U(Ni0.865Pd0.135)2Si2. In this scenario, the volume fraction of the AF-I phase rapidly grows with Pd doping on account of the UAF. At lowest temperatures an irreversible transition to the UAF phase is observed when a sufficiently high magnetic field is applied along the c-axis. Magnetic phase transition in the CsDyW2O8 magnet has been studied by means of low temperature specific heat C ( T ) measurements. The magnetic ordering temperature of the Dy3+ sublattice was established to be 1.34 K. The experimental results indicate on the antiferromagnetic character of interactions between Dy3+ ions. The behavior of the C ( T ) dependencies above and below T N is discussed in frames of different theoretical models. The measurements data on temperature and field dependencies of magnetization are used to calculate the exchange and dipole-dipole interactions energy and to determine the possible magnetic structure of the ground state. Superconducting SrTiO 3 - δ was obtained by annealing single crystalline SrTiO3 samples in ultra high vacuum. An analysis of the V ( I ) characteristics revealed very small critical currents I c which can be traced back to an unavoidable doping inhomogeneity. R ( T ) curves were measured for a range of magnetic fields B at I I c , thereby probing only the sample regions with the highest doping level. The resulting curves B c2 ( T ) show upward curvature, both at small and strong doping. These results are discussed in the context of bipolaronic and conventional superconductivity with Fermi surface anisotropy. We conclude that the special superconducting properties of SrTiO 3 - δ can be related to its Fermi surface and compare this finding with properties of the recently discovered superconductor MgB2.
