Nonlinear photonic crystals made from polystyrene materials that have Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit ultrafast optical switching
when the samples are pumped by ultrashort optical pulses with high intensity due to the change of the refractive index of
polystyrene and subsequent shift of the band gap edge or defect state resonant frequency. Polystyrene has a large Kerr nonlinear
susceptibility and almost instantaneous response to pump light, making it suitable for the realization of ultrafast optical
switching with a response time as short as a few femtoseconds. In this paper, we review our experimental progress on the continual
improvement of all-optical switching speed in two-dimensional and three-dimensional polystyrene nonlinear photonic crystals
in the past years. Several relevant issues are discussed and analyzed, including different mechanisms for all-optical switching,
preparation of nonlinear photonic crystal samples by means of microfabrication and self-assembly techniques, characterization
of optical switching performance by means of femtosecond pump-probe technique, and different ways to lower the pump power
of optical switching to facilitate practical applications in optical information processing. Finally, a brief summary and

设计了一种新颖的、低开关功率的全光开关. 将高非线性光子晶体光纤和双向抽运掺饵光纤放大器引入Sagnac环形镜内,破坏了环形镜的对称性,利用交叉相位调制作用使反向传输的两路信号光产生非线性相移,从而实现开关效应. 理论分析表明:开关功率与放大器的增益倍数和光子晶体光纤非线性系数的积成反比,在实验中所得开关功率约40 mW,消光比约为15.9 dB,并且信号光透过率随脉冲控制光峰值功率呈余弦变化,实验结果与理论分析相吻合.

In this paper, an all optical switch based on nonlinear photonic crystal directional coupler has been simulated and analyzed by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The lunched pump signal increases the refractive indices of the central row of the coupler, due to nonlinear Kerr effect, hence the coupler works in the nonlinear conditions and lightwave guides to the other output port. We have tried to increase the coupling efficiency and reduce the required power in the nonlinear status by optimizing the bends structure and increasing the interaction between dielectric and lightwave signal. Therefore, the input signal beam can be controlled to be exchanged between two output ports to earn the highest output power ratio and the smallest amount of power required for nonlinear performance, the physical length of the coupler is determined to be 20a, where a is the structure lattice constant. 相似文献

Photonic crystal fibers are a new class of single-material optical fibers with wavelength-scale air holes running down the
entire fiber length. Photonic crystal fibers were first developed in 1996 and have subsequently been the focus of increasing
scientific and technological interest in the field of fiber optics. The manufacturing, principles, basic properties, and some
applications of photonic crystal fibers are briefly described in this paper. A review of our recent work on the nonlinear
effects in photonic crystal fibers is presented, and special emphasis is placed on such effects as supercontinuum generation,

用实验和数值模拟两种方法研究了高非线性光子晶体光纤中飞秒激光脉冲的传输特性和超连续谱的产生机理,给出了抽运脉冲在三种不同中心波长情况下输出光谱展宽并形成超连续谱的实际测量及理论模拟结果.研究表明:在零色散波长抽运时,光谱展宽以自相位调制为主,同时三阶色散的影响明显,传输脉冲在时域内出现振荡次峰.而在反常色散区抽运时,光谱展宽的初期以自相位调制为主,随后根据抽运功率的不同孤子自频移、高阶光孤子的裂变和四波混频效应会逐渐增强,进而成为光谱展宽的主要原因.与此相应,在时域中能明显看到孤子的形成和红移,飞秒传输脉

为了探索大模场面积光子晶体光纤锁模激光器在全正色散锁模域内的耗散孤子锁模机理, 以获得更大的单脉冲能量和更高的峰值功率, 本文搭建了以掺镱大模场面积光子晶体光纤作为增益介质的耗散孤子锁模激光器. 激光器使用环形腔结构, 利用非线性偏振旋转以及滤光片提供的耗散作用实现了稳定的锁模运转. 实验中, 从激光器振荡级直接获得了平均功率10 W, 重复频率49.09 MHz(对应202 nJ的单脉冲能量), 脉冲宽度为1.03 ps的稳定锁模脉冲输出, 经过腔外色散补偿得到的脉冲宽度为95.5 fs. 相似文献

构建了掺镱大模场面积单偏振光子晶体光纤飞秒激光非线性放大系统. 讨论了腔内净色散量和抽运功率对振荡级输出参数的影响和振荡级参数对放大级输出参数的影响. 在本实验条件下, 当腔内净色散量取较大负色散时, 振荡级直接输出的脉冲更宽, 且携带更少的啁啾. 当振荡级抽运4.53 W时, 选择最接近变换极限的脉冲作为种子脉冲, 放大级在60 W抽运时输出压缩后无基底的短脉冲, 宽度为45.7 fs, 平均功率28 W. 振荡级抽运功率增加到5.08 W, 放大级抽运70 W时, 获得最高输出功率34.5 W, 对应脉宽53.5 fs. 相似文献

We investigate linear and nonlinear light propagation in the photonic crystal fibers infiltrated with nematic liquid crystals.
Such a photonic structure, with periodic modulation of refractive index, which could be additionally controlled by the temperature
and by the optical power, allows for the study of discrete optical phenomena. Our theoretical investigations, carried out
with the near infrared wavelength of 830 nm, for both focusing and defocusing Kerr-type nonlinearity, show the possibility
of the transverse light localization, which can result in the discrete soliton generation. In addition, we present the preliminary
experimental results on the linear light propagation in the photonic crystal fiber with the glycerin-water solution and 6CHBT

This paper demonstrates an all-optical switching
model system comprising a single pulsed pump beam
at 355 nm and a CW He--Ne signal beam at 632.8 nm with 2-(2^\prime
-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) in ethanol solution. The origins
of the optical switching effect were discussed. By the study of
nonlinear optical properties for HBT in ethanol solvent, this paper
verified that the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer
(ESIPT) effect of HBT and the thermal effect of solvent worked on
quite different time scales and together induced the change of the
refractive index of HBT solution, leading to the signal beam
deflection. The results indicated that the HBT molecule could be an
excellent candidate for high-speed and high-sensitive optical

Herewith, we report on the first observation of coherent phonons in alexandrite crystal obtained by means of the femtosecond Optical Kerr Effect spectroscopy. We have managed to observe dynamics of the Raman‐active modes with high resolution and to find their lifetimes in the temperature range between 263 K and 373 K. We have used the obtained temperature dependence of phonon lifetimes and frequencies for calculation of the anharmonic coupling constants. On the basis of our results, we have also calculated the widths of homogeneously broadened Raman lines. Our results prove that, in case of transparent samples, this experimental technique is a very good alternative to the commonly used transient reflection method. We overview our recent theoretical results on spatio-spectral control, diffraction management, and broadband all-optical switching
of polychromatic light in periodically curved one and two dimensional arrays of coupled optical waveguides. In particular,
we show that polychromatic light beams and patterns produced by white-light and supercontinuum sources can experience wavelength-independent normal, anomalous, or zero diffraction in specially designed structures. We also demonstrate that in the nonlinear regime,
it is possible to achieve broadband all-optical switching of polychromatic light in a directional waveguide coupler with special bending of the waveguide axes. Our results suggest
novel opportunities for creation of all-optical logical gates and switches which can operate in a very broad frequency region,
e.g., covering the entire visible spectrum.

The ultrashort pulse propagation and nonlinear second harmonic generation under the undepleted pump approximation in a quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) structure is theoretically investigated and the optimized parameters for high second harmonic generation conversion efficiency are extracted. The transfer matrix method is used for the numerical formulation for oblique angle of incidence. A unique set of material combination GaInP/InAlP is selected as alternating nonlinear and linear layers. The NPC parameters like incident angle and layer thickness are manipulated to obtain the exact phase matching using double resonance condition for a fixed number of layers with known experimental material parameters. 相似文献

We demonstrate extremely low transmittance characteristics of photonic crystals (PhCs) with a finite thickness in specific photonic bandgaps (PBGs) through numerical simulation, and clarify its origin. Some of the PhCs support decaying Bloch eigenmodes, whose propagation constant (real part of the Bloch wavenumber) as well as their decay constant (imaginary part) changes with frequency inside the bandgap. Such a class of modes can interfere destructively at the exit end of the crystal depending on their round-trip phase change, which creates comb-like valleys in their transmission spectra. 相似文献
