A Simple Route to New N(3)-Substituted 5-Aryl-2-(dialkylamino)-1,3-oxazolium Salts and N(1)-Substituted 4-Aryl-2-(dialkylamino)-1H-imidazoles

In the reaction of N,N-dialkyl-dichloromethaniminium chlorides 11 with 2-aminoacetophenones 12 , a general and simple route to heretofore unknown 5-aryl-substituted 2-(dialkylamino)-1,3-oxazolium salts 13 and 5-aryl-substituted 2-(dialkylamino)oxazoles 14 was found. From the 2-(dialkylamino)-1,3-oxazoles 14 , the corresponding oxazolium salts 13 were obtained after alkylation with (MeO)₂SO₂. The new oxazolium salts 13 were converted to 1-substituted 4-aryl-2-(dialkylamino)-1H-imidazoles 9 by treatment with NH₄OAc. The possible use of these 1H-imidazoles as dye educts was explored. Analytical data, as well as AM1 calculations, reveal some remarkable differences between the structures of the neutral imidazoles 9 and their positively charged oxazolium precursors 13 .     

A Novel Synthetic Route to 2-Aryl-2H-Benzotriazole 1-Oxides

The reaction of benzofuroxan 1 with sodium or potassium salts of formanilides 2 affords 2-aryl-2H-benzotriazole 1-oxides 3 in moderate to good yields. By heating the reactants in toluene or DMSO formal O/N exchange with elimination of alkali formate takes place.

Ethyl 3-alkyl-4-hydroxy-2-thioxothiazolidine-4-carboxylates were prepared in excellent yields from the reaction of corresponding primary amines with carbon disulfide and ethyl 3-bromo-2-oxopropanoate in the presence of anhydrous potassium phosphate in DMF at room temperature within 1 h. The structures of the highly functionalized products were corroborated spectroscopically （IR, ^1H NMR, ^13C NMR, EI-MS） and by elemental analyses. A plausible mechanism for such type of cyclization was proposed.

Reduction of 4-arylidene-1,3-(2H,4H)isoquinolinediones

Catalytic hydrogenation of some 4-arylidene-1,3-(2H,4H)isoquinolinediones (1) afforded the corresponding 4-arylmethyl-1,3-(2H,4H)isoquinolinediones (2) , but reduction of 1 by sodium borohydride gave 4-arylmethyl-1(2H)isoquinolones (isocarbostyrils, 3). Compounds of type 1 studied had aryl substituents phenyl, 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl, 3,4-methyleneoxyphenyl and 2-furyl. In one example of sodium borohydride reduction of an N-methylisoquinolinedione derivative (1) the heterocylic ring was opened, and 2-(1-hydroxymethyl-2-phenylethenyl)-N-methylbenzamide (4) was obtained from 4-benzylidene-2-methyl-1,3-(2H,4H)isoquinolinedione.

An Efficient Route to 2-(Formylmethyl)-Cyclopenten-3-one and Its 1-methyl-Congener

We describe a five-step synthesis of 2-(formylmethyl) - cyclopenten-3-one (1a) and its 1-methyl congener (1b) from 6-methylhept-5-ene-2-one by way of the respective 2-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-cyclopenten-3-ones (5) and selective ozonolysis of these intermediates.

The synthesis of a series of ethyl N-1-(hetero)aryl-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylates by reaction of diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate with the appropriate hydrazines is described.
