The geometries and energies of the electronic states of phenyloxenium ion 1 (Ph-O(+)) were computed at the multireference CASPT2/pVTZ level of theory. Despite being isoelectronic to phenylnitrene 4, the phenyloxenium ion 1 has remarkably different energetic orderings of its electronic states. The closed-shell singlet configuration ((1)A(1)) is the ground state of the phenyloxenium ion 1, with a computed adiabatic energy gap of 22.1 kcal/mol to the lowest-energy triplet state ((3)A(2)). Open-shell singlet configurations ((1)A(2), (1)B(1), (1)B(2), 2(1)A(1)) are significantly higher in energy (>30 kcal/mol) than the closed-shell singlet configuration. These values suggest a revision to the current assignments of the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy bands for the phenoxy radical to generate the phenyloxenium ion 1. For para-substituted phenyloxenium ions, the adiabatic singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE(ST)) is found to have a positive linear free energy relationship with the Hammett-like σ(+)(R)/σ(+) substituent parameters; for meta substituents, the relationship is nonlinear and negatively correlated. CASPT2 analyses of the excited states of p-aminophenyloxenium ion 5 and p-cyanophenyloxenium ion 10 indicate that the relative orderings of the electronic states remain largely unperturbed for these para substitutions. In contrast, meta-donor-substituted phenyloxenium ions have low-energy open-shell states (open-shell singlet, triplet) due to stabilization of a π,π* diradical state by the donor substituent. However, all of the other phenyloxenium ions and larger aryloxenium ions (naphthyl, anthryl) included in this study have closed-shell singlet ground states. Consequently, ground-state reactions of phenyloxenium ions are anticipated to be more closely related to closed-shell singlet arylnitrenium ions (Ar-NH(+)) than their isoelectronic arylnitrene (Ar-N) counterparts.  相似文献

Computations on 2,6-dibromo-4-tert-butyl-2',6'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4'-isopropyldiphenylcarbene (1) using ab initio and density functional theory methods underscore the unusual stability of the triplet over the singlet state. At the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level, the triplet state had a slightly bent central C-C-C bond angle of 167 degrees, whereas this angle in the singlet was 134 degrees. The B3LYP singlet-triplet splitting (12.2 kcal/mol) was larger than that of the parent molecule (5.8 kcal/mol), diphenylcarbene (2), which also has a triplet ground state. The energy of a suitable isodesmic reaction showed the triplet and singlet states of (1) to be destabilized, by 6.3 and 12.5 kcal/mol, respectively, due to the combined effects of the CF3, Br, and alkyl substituents. The linear-coplanar form of (3)(1), which might facilitate dimerization or electrophilic attack at the more exposed diradical center, was prohibitively (35.9 kcal/mol) higher in energy. Our results confirm Tomioka's conclusion that the triplet diarylcarbene, ortho-substituted with bulky CF3 and Br substituents, is persistent due to steric protection of the diradical center. Dimerization and other possible reaction pathways are inhibited, not only by the bulky ortho substituents but also by the para alkyl groups. The increase in stability of the triplet ((3)(1)) state relative to the singlet ((1)(1)) state does not influence the reactivity directly.  相似文献

The relative stability of different singlet phosphinidenes (R-P) has been investigated by using isodesmic reactions. The energies of these reactions with several R groups were calculated with DFT and ab initio methods at different levels of theory. The best stabilising effect on the phosphinidene centre is exhibited by the R'2C=N-group, resulting in a singlet ground state. The analysis of the electron density in the parent H2C=N-P, indicates a considerable double bond character of the PN bond. Further tuning of the C=N pi-bond polarity is possible by variation of the R' substituents. Using trimethylsilyl substituents or incorporating the carbon atom in a pi-withdrawing pentafulvene ring the stabilization and the computed singlet triplet separation increases. The thermodynamics and the kinetics of dimerisation reactions of the most stabilised R'2C=N-P indicates that these compounds are likely synthetic targets.  相似文献

This paper describes theoretical studies of halogen-substituted heteroacetylenes (XCMY, M = Si and Ge; X, Y = H, Cl and F) performed at the QCISD(T)/6-311G//QCISD/6-31G level of theory. The electronegative halogen substituents destabilize the singlet state such that the triplet state tends to become favorable. The triplet state has the bifunctional electronic structure of a triplet carbene joined to a heavy singlet carbene. We found that the substituents effectively reduce the energy of the donor-acceptor interactions (E(D-A)) between the two in-plane lone pairs of electrons of the singlet state; therefore, the remaining pi bond is less favorable energetically than the triplet state with a sigma bond. A related phenomenon occurs for the homonuclear heavy acetylenes in singlets in which the lead compound RPbPbR switches to a Pb-Pb sigma bond from the pi bonds observed for the lighter acetylenes.  相似文献

The geometry and the energy of a number of substituted phenyl cations have been calculated for both spin states at the UB3LYP/6-31G(d) level (o-, m-, p-Me, OMe, NH(2), CN, NO(2)) or at the UB3LYP/6-311++G(2d,p) level (o-, m-, p-SiMe(3), SMe). The geometric differences were assessed by means of a self-organizing neural network. The triplets maintain a regular hexagonal structure that is minimally affected by substituents, while in the singlets C1 puckers inward and, when an electron-donating group is present, shifts out of the plane. The triplets have the character of aromatic radical ions and are strongly stabilized by electron-donating substituents, independently of the position of the latter. In the case of singlets, the effect of substituents on the energy is weaker and depends on the position (the largest effect is exerted when the group is in meta). A two-parameter correlation of all of the triplet energies shows the predominant mesomeric effect of the substituents. In the case of singlets, linear correlations are obtained only when each position is treated separately and when the predominant effect is inductive for the ortho and, less markedly, the para position, whereas at the meta position, mesomeric and inductive effects are comparable. The ground state is determined to be the singlet for the parent cation and for electron-withdrawing substituted ions. With electron-donating substituents, the triplet is the ground state for ortho and para derivatives, while the two spin states are roughly isoenergetic when the donating group is in the meta position. These data allow predicting the reactivity of each cation.  相似文献

The potential energy surface (PES) of CH3SO radical with NO reaction has been studied at MP2/6-311G(2df, p) and QCISD/6-311G(2df, p) levels. Geometries of the reactants, transition states (TS) and products were optimized at B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) level. The geometries of the transition states were found for the first time. The calculated results show that the reaction can proceed via singlet-state or triplet-state PES. Because of the high energy barrier of triplet surface, the singlet surface reactions are dominant. The topological analysis of electron density shows that there are two kinds of structaral transition states (the bifurcation-type ring structure transition state and the T-shaped conflict structure transition state) in the titled reaction. The total electronic density of the reactants, TS and products and the spin electronic density on the triplet surface were also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The free energies of reaction (DeltaG) and activation (DeltaG) were determined for the Curtius-like rearrangement of dimethylphosphinoyl, dimethylphosphinyl, and dimethylphosphoryl azides as well as the corresponding singlet and triplet nitrenes by CBS-QB3 and B3LYP computational methods. From CASSCF calculations, it was established that the closed-shell configuration was the lower energy singlet state for each of these nitrenes. The triplet states of dimethylphosphinyl- and dimethylphosphorylnitrene are the preferred ground states. However, the closed-shell singlet state is the ground state for dimethylphosphinoylnitrene. The CBS-QB3 DeltaG values for the Curtius-like rearrangements of dimethylphosphinyl and dimethylphosphoryl azides were 45.4 and 47.0 kcal mol-1, respectively. For the closed-shell singlet dimethylphosphinyl- and dimethylphosphorylnitrene, the CBS-QB3 DeltaG values for the rate-limiting step of the Curtius-like rearrangement were 22.9 and 18.0 kcal mol-1, respectively. It is unlikely that the nitrenes will undergo a Curtius-like rearrangement because of competing bimolecular reactions that have lower activation barriers. The pharmacology of weaponized organophosphorus compounds can be investigated using phosphorylnitrenes as photoaffinity labels. Dominant bimolecular reactivity is a desirable quality for a photoaffinity label to possess, and thus, the resistance of phosphorylnitrenes to intramolecular Curtius-like rearrangements increases their usefulness as photoaffinity labels.  相似文献

UB3LYP/6-31g* calculations have been performed on a series of para-substituted 2,2-difluoro-1,3-diphenylcyclopentane-1,3-diyls (4). The singlet is computed to be the ground state for each of the diradicals, regardless of the nature of the para substituents, which range from strongly pi-electron-donating (amino) to strongly pi-electron-withdrawing (nitro). In the symmetrically para-disubstituted diradicals, the size of the singlet-triplet energy gap (Delta E(ST)) increases with the pi-electron-donating ability of the substituents, but in the unsymmetrically substituted diradicals, large values of Delta E(ST) are calculated even when one of the substituents is a pi electron acceptor. The origins of the competitive and cooperative substituent effects, predicted for diradical 4, are discussed in light of the calculated effects of the same substituents on the singlet and triplet states of diradical 6, which lacks the geminal fluorines at C-2 that are present in 4.  相似文献

Four ground state triplet silylenes are found among 30 possible silylenic XHSi3 structures (X = H, F, Cl and Br), at seven ab initio and DFT levels including: B3LYP/6-311++G∗∗, HF/6-311++G∗∗, MP3/6-311G, MP2/6-311+G∗∗, MP4(SDTQ)/6-311++G∗∗, QCISD(T)/6-311++G∗∗ and CCSD(T)/6-311++G∗∗. The latter six methods indicate that the triplet states of 3-flouro-1,2,3-trisilapropadienylidene, 1-chloro-1,2,3-trisilapropargylene and 3-chloro-1,2,3-trisilapropargylene are energy minima. These triplets appear more stable than their corresponding singlet states which cannot even exist for showing negative force constants. Also, triplet state of 1-flouro-1,2,3-trisilapropargylene is possibly accessible for being an energy minimum, since its corresponding singlet state is not a real isomer. Some discrepancies are observed between energetic and/or structural results of DFT vs. ab initio data.  相似文献

A series of para-conjugatively coupled phenylenecarbenonitrenes [(4-nitrenophenyl)methylene (3a), (4-nitrenophenyl)fluoromethylene (3b), (4-nitrenophenyl)chloromethylene (3c), and (4-nitrenophenyl)bromomethylene (3d)] were generated in argon matrix at low temperature (10 or 13 K) and characterized by IR and UV/vis spectroscopy. Density functional theory (B3LYP/6-31G(d)) and ab initio (MCSCF, CASPT2) methods were used to study the ground- and some low-lying excited states of 3a-d. The experimental and computational data suggest that 3a-d have singlet ground states (S0) and can be thought of as quinonoidal biradicals. In all cases, the lowest triplet (T1) and quintet (Q1) states lie about 2 kcal mol(-1) and 28-29 kcal mol(-1), respectively, higher in energy than S0. On the other hand the substituent is found to have a significant effect on the relative energy of the second excited triplet (T2) state. This state tends to become relatively more stable as the ability of the substituent to enforce a closed-shell configuration at the carbene subunit increases. Interestingly, the energy difference between the T2 and S0 states in 3a-d is found to depend linearly on the S-T gap of the corresponding phenylcarbenes 7a-d. This relationship is helpful in predicting when a substituted p-phenylenecarbenonitrene may have a triplet ground state instead of a singlet one.  相似文献

Dibenzo[a,f]pentalene ( [a , f ]DBP ) is a highly antiaromatic molecule having appreciable open-shell singlet character in its ground state. In this work, DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory were performed to explore the efficiency of three strategies, that is, BN/CC isosterism, substitution, and (di)benzoannulation of [a , f ]DBP , in controlling its electronic state and (anti)aromaticity. To evaluate the type and extent of the latter, the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) and aromatic fluctuation (FLU) indices were used, along with the nucleus-independent chemical shift NICS-XY-scan procedure. The results suggest that all three strategies could be employed to produce either the closed-shell system or open-shell species, which may be in the singlet or triplet ground state. Triplet states have been characterized as aromatic, which is in accordance with Baird's rule. All the singlet states were found to have weaker global paratropicity than [a , f ]DBP . Additional (di)benzo fusion adds local aromatic subunit(s) and mainly retains the topology of the paratropic ring currents of the basic molecule. The substitution of two carbon atoms by the isoelectronic BN pair, or the introduction of substituents, results either in the same type and very similar topology of ring currents as in the parent compound, or leads to (anti)aromatic and nonaromatic subunits. The triplet states of all the examined compounds are also discussed.  相似文献

Relative stabilities and singlet–triplet energy differences are calculated for 24 C2NX azacarbenes (where X is H, F, Cl, and Br). Three skeletal arrangements are employed including azacyclopropenylidene, [(imino)methylene]carbene, and cyanocarbene. Halogens appear to alternate the electronic ground states of C2NH azacarbenes, from triplet to singlet states, at MP3/6‐311++G**, B1LYP/6‐311++G**, B3LYP/6‐311++G**, MP2/6‐311++G**, MP4(SDTQ)/6‐311++G**, QCISD(T)/6‐311++G**, CCSD(T)/6‐311++G**, CCSD(T)/cc‐pVTZ, G1, and G2 levels of theory. The aromatic characters of singlet cyclic azacyclopropenylidenes are measured using GIAO–NICS calculations. Linear correlations are found between the B3LYP/6‐311++G** calculated LUMO–HOMO energy gaps (ΔEHOMO ‐ LUMO) of the singlet carbenes versus their corresponding singlet–triplet energy separations (ΔE). Electrophilic characters are found for all singlet azacarbenes in their addition reactions to alkenes with the highest electrophilicity being exhibited for X = F. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of oligoacenes from benzene to decacene were studied computationally with DFT and CASSCF methods. In contrast to the common view that acenes are closed-shell systems or may have a triplet ground state, these results offer the first theoretical predictions for the singlet ground state and diradical character for oligoacenes. The nature of the ground states of these molecules arises from the disjoint nature of the NBMOs that are singly occupied in the diradical.  相似文献

Energy differences, ΔXS‐t (X = E, H and G) (ΔXS‐t = X(singlet)‐X(triplet)) between singlet (s) and triplet (t) states are calculated at B3LYP/6‐311++G (3df,2p). The DFT calculations show that the triplet state of C4H4C is a ground state with planar conformer respect to its corresponding nonplanar singlet state. Both singlet and triplet states of C4H4M (M = Si, Ge, Sn and Pb) have a planar conformer with the singlet ground state. Four isodesmic reactions are presented for determining the stability energies, SE. NICS calculations are carried out for C4H4M to determine the aromatic character.  相似文献

Using single- and multireference approaches we have examined many of the low-lying electronic states of oxo-Mn(salen), several of which have not been explored previously. Large complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) computations have been performed in pursuit of an accurate ordering for the lowest several electronic states. Basis set and relativistic effects have also been considered. For the geometry considered, our best results indicate the ground spin state to be a closed-shell singlet, followed by a pair of low-lying triplet states, with additional singlet states and the lowest quintet state lying significantly higher in energy. Hartree-Fock and density functional theory (DFT) results are obtained and are compared to the more robust CASSCF results. The Hartree-Fock results are qualitatively incorrect for the relative energies of the states considered. Popular density functionals such as BP86 and B3LYP are superior to Hartree-Fock for this problem, but they give inconsistent answers regarding the ordering of the lowest singlet and triplet states and they greatly underestimate the singlet-quintet gap. We obtained multiple Hartree-Fock and DFT solutions within a given spin multiplicity, and these solutions have been subjected to wave function stability analysis.  相似文献

The geometrical and electronic properties of the anionic and neutral V2O6 clusters were studied with the spin unrestricted hybrid density functional B3LYP method. The calculated ground states of both clusters are different from the previous theoretical results. The ground state of V2O6- is found to be a doublet with C2v symmetry, while a doublet with D2h symmetry was previously obtained by Vyboishchikov and Sauer. For neutral V2O6, the ground state is an open-shell singlet with D2h symmetry whose energy is very close to that of the triplet state. In contrast, a closed-shell singlet with D2h symmetry was obtained by Vyboishchikov and Sauer, and Calatayud et al. found a triplet ground state with Cs symmetry. Moreover, the calculated adiabatic and vertical detachment energies of the anion cluster are in much better agreement with the experimental results of photoelectron spectroscopy than previous theoretical values.  相似文献

The heavy dipnictenes (RE=ER, where E=P, As, Sb, and Bi with the substituent R) have essentially planar geometry and appreciable strength in pi-bonding, unlike related heavier main group 14 analogues of alkenes as concluded recently by Power. This work demonstrated that the protonated pnictenes behave more like the heavy carbene for their weak pi-bonding character from the computational study with the B3LYP/6-311++G** method. For example, although both phosphinidene (HP) and the phosphonium ion (H2P+) are isoelectronic to silylenes, the pi-bonding tendency of the former is rather strong and it forms a planar adduct with both the stable carbene and stable silylene ((HCNH)2E, where E=C and Si). In contrast, the latter forms trans-bent adducts with the two species. These results can be interpreted in terms of the Carter-Goddard-Malrieu-Trinquier (CGMT) model, and the fact that the value of DeltaEST [E(triplet)-E(singlet)] of the HP fragment increases significantly after protonation. All other heavy pnictenes resemble the phosphinidene. In contrast, nitrene (HN) and nitrenium (H2N+) have a ground triplet state, thus both have strong pi-bonding character similar to that of carbene.  相似文献

For unusual e(2)@C(60)F(60)(I(h), D(6h), and D(5d)) cage structures with two excess electrons, it is reported that not only the lone pair in singlet state but also two single excess electrons in triplet state can be encapsulated inside the C(60)F(60) cages to form single molecular solvated dielectrons. The interesting relationship between the shape of the cage and the spin state of the system has revealed that ground states are singlet state for spherical shaped e(2)@C(60)F(60)(I(h)) and triplet states for short capsular shaped e(2)@C(60)F(60)(D(6h)) and long capsular shaped e(2)@C(60)F(60)(D(5d)), which shows a spin evolution from the singlet to triplet state with the deformation of the cage from spherical to capsular shape. For these excess electron systems, the three ground state structures have large vertical electron detachment energies (VDEs (I) of 1.720-2.283 eV and VDEs (II) of 3.959-5.288 eV), which shows their stabilities and suggests that the large C(60)F(60) cage is the efficient container of excess electrons.  相似文献

Density functional theory (UB3LYP/6-31G(d,p)) was used to determine substituent effects on the singlet-triplet-state energy gap for 21 meta-substituted phenylnitrenium ions. It was found that strongly electron-donating substituents stabilize the triplet state relative to the singlet state. With sufficiently strong meta electron donors (e.g., m,m'-diaminophenylnitrenium ion) the triplet is predicted to be the ground state. Analysis of equilibrium geometries, Kohn-Sham orbital distributions, and Mulliken spin densities for the triplet states of this series of nitrenium ions leads to the conclusion that there are two spatially distinct types of low-energy triplet states. Simple arylnitrenium ions such as phenylnitrenium ions as well as those having electron-withdrawing or weakly donating meta substituents have lowest-energy triplet states that are n,pi in nature. That is, one singly occupied molecular orbital is orthogonal to the plane of the phenyl ring and one is coplanar. These n,pi triplets are generally characterized by large ArNH bond angles (ca. 130-132 degrees ) and an NH bond that is perpendicular to the plane of the phenyl ring. In contrast, meta donor arylnitrenium ions have a lowest-energy triplet state best described as pi,pi. That is, both singly occupied molecular orbitals are orthogonal to the aromatic ring. Such pi,pi states are characterized by NH bonds that are coplanar with the phenyl ring and have ArNH bond angles that are more acute (ca. 110-111 degrees ). These triplet nitrenium ions have electronic structures analogous to those of meta-benzoquinodimethane derivatives.  相似文献
