Resonance Raman spectroscopy/microscopy was used to study individualized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) both in aqueous suspensions as well as after spin-coating onto Si/SiO2 surfaces. Four different SWNT materials containing nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.7 to 1.6 nm were used. Comparison with Raman data obtained for suspensions shows that the surface does not dramatically affect the electronic properties of the deposited tubes. Raman features observed for deposited SWNTs are similar to what was measured for nanotubes directly fabricated on surfaces using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. In particular, individual semiconducting tubes could be distinguished from metallic tubes by their different G-mode line shapes. It could also be shown that the high-power, short-time sonication used to generate individualized SWNT suspensions does not induce defects in great quantities. However, (additional) defects can be generated by laser irradiation of deposited SWNTs in air, thus giving rise to an increase of the D-mode intensity for even quite low power densities (approximately 10(4) W/cm2).  相似文献

Millimeter-long and well-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been produced on silica/silicon surfaces using the carbon monoxide chemical vapor deposition (CO-CVD) method. The orientation of the nanotube arrays can be well-controlled by the gas flow during the growth. The majority of the orientated SWNTs are straight and individual. The length of the nanotubes can be >2 mm for a 10 min growth. Furthermore, multidimensional crossed-networks of SWNT can be easily generated by multistep processes. These results present a great opportunity in the controllable production of organized SWNT arrays for large-scale carbon nanotube-based nanodevice fabrication.  相似文献

The use of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) networks as templates for the electrodeposition of metal (Ag and Pt) nanostructures is described. Pristine SWNTs, grown on insulating SiO2 surfaces using catalyzed chemical vapor deposition, served as the working electrode. In the simplest case, electrical contact was made by depositing a gold strip on the SWNT substrate (device 1). Deposition of Ag and Pt over extensive periods (30 s) resulted in a high density of particles on the SWNTs, with almost contiguous nanowire formation from the Au/SWNT boundary moving to isolated nanoparticles at further distances from the contact. For direct electrochemical studies of Ag and Pt nucleation, the assembly was coated in a resist layer and a small window opened up to expose only the electrically connected SWNTs to solution (device 2). In this case, the electrochemical signature in voltammetric and amperometric studies of metal deposition was due solely to processes at the SWNTs. Coupled with high-resolution microscopy measurements (atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy), this approach provided detail on the nucleation and growth mechanisms of Ag and Pt on SWNTs under electrochemical control. In particular, Ag growth was found to be rapid and progressive with an increasing nanoparticle density with time, whereas Pt deposition was characterized by lower nucleation densities and slower growth rates with a tendency for larger particles to be produced over long times.  相似文献

The preferential growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on silica spheres with various diameters was realized for the first time by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methane. SWNTs tend to wrap the silica spheres to form a new superstructure of uniform SWNT nanoclaws when the diameters of the silica spheres are larger than 400 nm. The SWNTs obtained on silica spheres have highly graphitic tubular walls as characterized by Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM. This is a new method to obtain tunable uniform elastic deformation of SWNTs, which may act as the model for the study about the effect of delocalized bending on the properties of SWNTs. In addition, the combination of SWNTs with monodispersed silica spheres could conveniently integrate SWNTs into photonic crystals.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with various unique optical properties are interesting nanoprobes widely explored in biomedical imaging and phototherapies. Herein, DNA-functionalized SWNTs are modified with noble metal (Ag or Au) nanoparticles via an in situ solution phase synthesis method comprised of seed attachment, seeded growth, and surface modification with polyethylene glycol (PEG), yielding SWNT-Ag-PEG and SWNT-Au-PEG nanocomposites stable in physiological environments. With gold or silver nanoparticles decorated on the surface, the SWNT-metal nanocomposites gain an excellent concentration and excitation-source dependent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. Using a near-infrared (NIR) laser as the excitation source, targeted Raman imaging of cancer cells labeled with folic acid (FA) conjugated SWNT-Au nanocomposite (SWNT-Au-PEG-FA) is realized, with images acquired in significantly shortened periods of time as compared to that of using nonenhanced SWNT Raman probes. Owing to the strong surface plasmon resonance absorption contributed by the gold shell, the SWNTs-Au-PEG-FA nanocomposite also offers remarkably improved photothermal cancer cell killing efficacy. This work presents a facile approach to synthesize water-soluble noble metal coated SWNTs with a strong SERS effect suitable for labeling and fast Raman spectroscopic imaging of biological samples, which has been rarely realized before. The SWNT-Au-PEG nanocomposite developed here may thus be an interesting optical theranostic probe for cancer imaging and therapy.

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles are selectively removed from an aqueous dispersion containing individually suspended carbon nanotubes coated with gum Arabic via interfacial trapping. The suspensions are characterized with absorbance, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and rheology. The resulting aqueous suspensions have better dispersion quality after interfacial trapping and can be further improved by altering the processing conditions. A two-step extraction process offers a simple and fast approach to preparing high-quality dispersions of individual SWNTs comparable to ultracentrifugation. Partitioning of SWNTs to the liquid-liquid interface is described by free energy changes. SWNT bundles prefer to reside at the interface over individually suspended SWNTs because of greater free energy changes.  相似文献

A procedure, combining molecular simulation, Raman spectroscopy, and standard nitrogen adsorption, is developed for structural characterization of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) samples. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of nitrogen adsorption are performed on the external and internal adsorption sites of homogeneous arrays of SWNTs of diameters previously determined by Raman spectroscopy of the sample. The results show the importance of the peripheral grooves of a nanotube bundle at low relative pressure and the insensitivity of nanotube diameter toward adsorption on the external surface of the bundle at higher pressures. Simulations also reveal that samples containing thin nanotubes have less internal adsorption capacity that saturates at lower pressure than those comprising large diameter nanotubes. The fraction of open-ended nanotubes in a sample can be estimated by scaling the simulated internal adsorption inside nanotubes to obtain a near perfect fit between simulated and experimental isotherms. This procedure allows extrapolation of adsorption properties to conditions in which all nanotubes in the sample are open-ended.  相似文献

A prototype amperometric immunosensor was evaluated based on the adsorption of antibodies onto perpendicularly oriented assemblies of single wall carbon nanotubes called SWNT forests. The forests were self-assembled from oxidatively shortened SWNTs onto Nafion/iron oxide coated pyrolytic graphite electrodes. The nanotube forests were characterized using atomic force microscopy and resonance Raman spectroscopy. Anti-biotin antibody strongly adsorbed to the SWNT forests. In the presence of a soluble mediator, the detection limit for horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled biotin was 2.5 pmol ml(-1) (2.5 nM). Unlabelled biotin was detected in a competitive approach with a detection limit of 16 nmol ml(-1) (16 microM) and a relative standard deviation of 12%. The immunosensor showed low non-specific adsorption of biotin-HRP (approx. 0.1%) when blocked with bovine serum albumin. This immunosensing approach using high surface area, patternable, conductive SWNT assemblies may eventually prove useful for nano-biosensing arrays.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have had significant impact on the development of gas sensors in the last decade. However, useful applications of SWNTs are limited by the lack of manufacturable routes to device formation. This Highlight article chronicles recent progress in this area and demonstrates the great promise of a new room temperature deposition method for SWNT networks in gas sensing applications. This liquid deposition technique allows the deposition of pre-treated, highly aligned SWNT networks on a wide variety of substrates. A significant advantage of SWNT-network sensors is that fluctuations in the electrical response of individual SWNTs become less important as the size of the network increases. Therefore, device properties can be controlled by the overall density of the network rather than the physical properties of any individual SWNT. At densities where semiconducting pathways dominate, highly sensitive thin-film chemoresistive sensors can be fabricated. Such devices also have higher signal-to-noise ratios and are easier to fabricate than devices based on a single SWNT.  相似文献

The root growth mode of extremely dense and vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) synthesized by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition was clarified by a new method, marker growth, which does not require transmission electron microscopy. SWNT layers were grown intermittently on a substrate, and a line between the layers was used as a marker to identify the growth mode. Micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed that the SWNT layers have the same diameter distribution.  相似文献

Pyridine-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are prepared from the addition of a pyridine diazonium salt to nanotubes. The location and distribution of the functional groups is determined by atomic force microscopy using electrostatic interactions with gold nanoparticles. The pyridine-functionalized SWNTs are able to act as cross-linkers and hydrogen bond to poly(acrylic acid) to form SWNT hydrogels. The pyridine-functionalized SWNTs are further characterized using Raman, FTIR, UV/vis-NIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry.  相似文献

The presence of metallic nanotubes in as-grown single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is the major bottleneck for their applications in field-effect transistors. Herein, we present a method to synthesize enriched, semiconducting nanotube arrays on quartz substrate. It was discovered that introducing appropriate amounts of water could effectively remove the metallic nanotubes and significantly enhance the density of SWNT arrays. More importantly, we proposed and confirmed that the high growth selectivity originates from the etching effect of water and the difference in the chemical reactivities of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes. Three important rules were summarized for achieving a high selectivity in growing semiconducting nanotubes by systematically investigating the relationship among water concentration, carbon feeding rate, and the percentage of semiconducting nanotubes in the produced SWNT arrays. Furthermore, these three rules can be applied to the growth of random SWNT networks on silicon wafers.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are promising materials for in vitro and in vivo biological applications due to their high surface area and inherent near infrared photoluminescence and Raman scattering properties. Here, we use density gradient centrifugation to separate SWNTs by length and degree of bundling. Following separation, we observe a peak in photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and Raman scattering intensity where SWNT length is maximized and bundling is minimized. Individualized SWNTs are found to exhibit high PL QY and high resonance-enhanced Raman scattering intensity. Fractions containing long, individual SWNTs exhibit the highest PL QY and Raman scattering intensities, compared to fractions containing single, short SWNTs or SWNT bundles. Intensity gains of approximately ~1.7 and 4-fold, respectively, are obtained compared with the starting material. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that SWNT fractions at higher displacement contain increasing proportions of SWNT bundles, which causes reduced optical transition energies and broadening of absorption features in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra, and reduced PL QY and Raman scattering intensity. Finally, we adsorb small aromatic species on "bright," individualized SWNT sidewalls and compare the resulting absorption, PL and Raman scattering effects to that of SWNT bundles. We observe similar effects in both cases, suggesting aromatic stacking affects the optical properties of SWNTs in an analogous way to SWNT bundles, likely due to electronic structure perturbations, charge transfer, and dielectric screening effects, resulting in reduction of the excitonic optical transition energies and exciton lifetimes.  相似文献

The radiation degradation of a nanotube-polyimide nanocomposite was studied. Radiation chemistry was observed that was not present in the unmodified polymer or in the imbedded single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) themselves. The tensile properties were found to be improved by the addition of SWNTs in the unirradiated materials, and no deterioration in these properties with irradiation was observed. The SWNTs were found to have a detrimental effect on the optical properties however. The transparency of the composite was degraded significantly faster by electron-beam radiation than the neat polymer was. This may make the SWNT/polyimide composites unsuitable for some space applications. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements determined that the SWNTs interfere with the radical chemistry in the irradiated materials. This could be due to energy dissipation by the SWNT network, preventing the formation of radical species, or alternatively, preferential reaction or termination of radicals by the nanotubes. FT-Raman spectroscopy was found to be a very useful tool for examining SWNTs embedded at low concentrations. It revealed no signs of SWNT degradation up to 10 MGy.  相似文献

This paper describes a facile approach to the site-specific growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on silicon surfaces by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The approach is based on the use of a surfactant as a resist to define patterns of silicon oxide nanodomains onto which nanoparticles of iron hydroxide (Fe(OH)3), 1-5 nm diameter, could be deposited. In base growth mode, the SWNTs can grow from the oxide nanodomains. By controlling the location of oxide nanodomains, site-specific growth could be obtained. The iron hydroxide nanoparticles were prepared by hydrolysis of ferric chloride (FeCl3). Patterned hydroxylated silicon oxide nanodomains were created by scanning probe oxidation (SPO) of silicon substrates modified with aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS, H2N(CH2)3Si(OCH3)3). Due to electrostatic interaction, Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles can be selectively deposited on hydroxyl groups present on silicon oxide nanodomains. To inhibit the assembly of the nanoparticles on a APTMS-coated silicon surface, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was introduced, which restricted deposition to the hydroxylated nanodomains. A model mechanism for the selective deposition mechanism has been proposed. It was possible to convert the patterned Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles to iron oxide, which served as a catalyst for the site-specific growth of SWNTs. Raman spectroscopy and AFM were used to characterize the nanotubes on the Si substrate. This will offer the possibility for future integration with conventional microelectronics as well as the development of novel devices.  相似文献

We compare popular analytical techniques, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Raman and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, for the evaluation of the purity of bulk quantities of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Despite their importance as imaging techniques, SEM and TEM are not capable of quantitatively evaluating the purity of typical inhomogeneous bulk SWNT samples because the image frame visualizes less than 1 pg of SWNT material; furthermore, there is no published algorithm to convert such images into numerical data. The TGA technique is capable of measuring the amount of metal catalyst in an SWNT sample, but does not provide an unambiguous separation between the content of SWNTs and carbonaceous impurities. We discuss the utilization of solution-phase near-infrared spectroscopy and solution-phase Raman spectroscopy to quantitatively compare arbitrary samples of bulk SWNT materials of different purities. The primary goal of this paper is to provide the chemical community with a realistic evaluation of current analytical tools for the purity evaluation of a bulk sample of SWNTs. The secondary goal is to draw attention to the growing crisis in the SWNT industry as a result of the lack of quality control and the misleading advertising by suppliers of this material.  相似文献

The charge transfer induced lithiation of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was investigated by in situ monitoring by Raman spectroscopy as lithium was added incrementally to a dispersion of SWNTs in liquid ammonia. Charge transfer from liquid ammonia solvated lithium to the SWNTs led to intercalation of lithium into the SWNT ropes, as well as to the semi-covalent lithiation of the SWNTs. Raman spectra of the SWNTs recorded as lithium was added showed a 30 wavenumber downshift of the G band (1594 cm−1) with the concomitant appearance of a new peak at 1350 cm−1 that was assigned as the signature of the lithiated SWNTs. Addition of 1-iodododecane to the lithiated SWNTs resulted in the covalent attachment of dodecyl groups. The intercalation of lithium throughout the SWNT ropes led to complete dodecylation of all individual SWNTs.  相似文献

We have employed water-soluble porphyrin molecules [meso-(tetrakis-4-sulfonatophenyl) porphine dihydrochloride] to solubilize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), resulting in aqueous solutions that are stable for several weeks. The porphyrin-nanotube complexes have been characterized with absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and with AFM. We find that the porphyrin/SWNT interaction is selective for the free base form, and that this interaction stabilizes the free base against protonation to the diacid. Under mildly acidic conditions nanotube-mediated J-aggregates form, which are unstable in solution and result in precipitation of the nanotubes over the course of a few days. Porphyrin-coated SWNTs can be precisely aligned on hydrophilic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces by combing SWNT solution along a desired direction and then transferred to silicon substrates by stamping. Parallel SWNT patterns have been fabricated in this manner.  相似文献
