Summary For the determination of micro amounts of vanadium (1–5 ppm) in oil fractions 500 mg of oil are burnt in a combustion bomb. Vanadium is determined photometrically in the aqueous solution of the residue as 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol complex. The method is accurate to ±0.4 ppm.

On the determination of preservatives containing bromine in wine
Summary The determination of bromacetic acid or -esters in wine was tested in respect to sources of error. After extraction of bromoacetic acid and basic saponification the bromide formed is determined either by titration — after oxidation to bromate — or photometrically at 585 nm — after reaction with phenol red and chloramin-T to bromophenol blue. The reasons for positive and negative deviations are investigated. In the titration hypochlorite can cause a blank, depending on the way of its preparation. A negative error is arising, if the pH of the solution is more than 0.9. In the photometric determination a certain relation between bromide/phenol red/chloramin-T must be maintained. Positive errors can be caused by chlorinated products of phenol red, which are absorbing like bromophenol blue at 585 nm. The extent of the error is depending on the reaction time and the amount of chloramine-T. The best molar relation of bromide to phenol red is 4 1.2 till 1.35. If the amount of phenol red is essentially greater or smaller, a negative error is arising. The best reaction time is 60 seconds; chloramine-T must then be reduced by thiosulfate. In this time bromophenol blue is formed quantitatively. The troubling secundary reactions (e. g. formation of chlorinated products of phenol red and oxidation of bromophenol blue by chloramine) are effecting small error in this interval, because these reactions are slow.
