The effect of the triblock copolymer poly[styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene] (SEBS) on the formation of the space charge of immiscible low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)/polystyrene (PS) blends was investigated. Blends of 70/30 (wt %) LDPE/PS were prepared through melt blending in an internal mixer at a blend temperature of 220 °C. The amount of charge that accumulated in the 70% LDPE/30% PS blends decreased when the SEBS content increased up to 10 wt %. For compatibilized and uncompatibilized blends, no significant change in the degree of crystallinity of LDPE in the blends was observed, and so the effect of crystallization on the space charge distribution could be excluded. Morphological observations showed that the addition of SEBS resulted in a domain size reduction of the dispersed PS phase and better interfacial adhesion between the LDPE and PS phases. The location of SEBS at a domain interface enabled charges to migrate from one phase to the other via the domain interface and, therefore, resulted in a significant decrease in the amount of space charge for the LDPE/PS blends with SEBS. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several blends, covering the entire range of compositions, of a metallocenic ethylene‐1‐octene copolymer (CEO) with a multiphasic block copolymer, propylene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐propylene) (CPE) [composed of semicrystalline isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and amorphous ethylene‐co‐propylene segments], have been prepared and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, optical microscopy, stress‐strain and microhardness measurements, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The results show that for high CEO contents, the crystallization of the iPP component is inhibited and slowed down in such a way that it crystallizes at much lower temperatures, simultaneously with the crystallization of the CEO crystals. The mechanical results suggest very clearly the toughening effect of CEO as its content increases in the blends, although it is accompanied by a decrease in stiffness. The analysis of the viscoelastic relaxations displays, first, the glass transition of the amorphous blocks of CPE appearing at around 223 K, which is responsible for the initial toughening of the plain CPE copolymer in relation to iPP homopolymer. Moreover, the additional toughening due to the addition of CEO in the blends is explained by the presence of the β relaxation of CEO that appears at about 223 K. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene/ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (PP/EVA) nanocomposites with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs) have been prepared. The dissolution experiment, transmission electronic microscope, and scanning electronic microscope characterizations prove that, in the nanocomposites with sea–island morphology, although some FMWCNTs are observed in both PP and EVA phases, most of FMWCNTs distribute at the interface; however, in the nanocomposites with cocontinuous morphology, FMWCNTs mainly distribute in EVA phase. Further results based on (differential scanning calorimetry) measurements show that the different dispersion states of FMWCNTs, which are resulted by the different melt blending sequences, result in the different crystallization behaviors of PP matrix. The mechanical measurements show that FMWCNTs exhibit apparent reinforcement and toughening effects for immiscible PP/EVA blends, and such effects are greatly dependent upon the blending sequences. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various copolyesteramides were prepared by melt compounding at 220 °C involving reaction of poly(styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride), SMA, with 6, 17, and 28 wt % maleic anhydride content, and 1‐dodecanol, C12OH, in the presence of 2‐undecyl‐1,3‐oxazoline, C11OXA. Copolymer architectures were examined by means of 1H NMR, FTIR, DSC, and TGA using model compounds prepared via solution reactions. While conversion of anhydride with alcohol was poor due to the thermodynamically favored anhydride ring formation, very high conversions were achieved when stoichiometric amounts of C11OXA were added. According to spectroscopic studies esteramide groups resulted from reaction of oxazoline with carboxylic acid intermediate. In the absence of alcohol, C11OXA reacted with anhydride to produce esterimides. Effective attachment of flexible n‐alkyl side chains via simultaneous reaction of C12OH and C11OXA resulted in lower glass‐transition temperatures of copolyesteramides. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Segmented copolyesters, namely, poly(butylene terephthalate)–poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate‐co‐sebacate) (PBT‐PETIS), were synthesized with the melting transesterification processing in vacuo condition involving bulk polyester produced on a large scale (PBT) and ternary amorphous random copolyester (PETIS). Investigations on the morphology of segmented copolyesters were undertaken. The two‐phase morphology model was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. One of the phases was composed of crystallizable PBT, and the other was a homogeneous mixture of PETIS and noncrystallizable PBT. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New super‐tough poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/poly(ethylene‐octene) copolymer (PEO) blends containing 2 wt% poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) (EGMA) as a compatibilizer were obtained by extrusion and injection molding. The blends comprised of an amorphous PBT‐rich phase with some miscibilized EGMA, a pure PEO amorphous phase, and a crystalline PBT phase that was not influenced by the presence of either PEO or EGMA. The blends showed a fine particle size up to 20 wt% PEO content. Super‐tough blends were obtained with PEO contents equal to or higher than 10%. The maximum toughness was very high (above 710 J/m) and was attained with 20% PEO without chemical modification of the commercial components used. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Miscibility and strong specific interactions that occurred within homoblends of poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylpyridine) containing 15 mol % of 4‐vinylpyridine (PS4VP15) and poly(styrene‐co‐methacrylic acid) containing 15 mol % of methacrylic acid (PSMA15) have been examined by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC. The observed positive deviation of the glass transition temperature of the blends from the linear average line, was analyzed by the frequently used theoretical conventional approaches including the one very recently proposed by Brostow. A better fit was obtained when this latter is used. A reasonable agreement with experimental values was also obtained when the theoretical fitting parameter free method developed by Coleman, is applied to predict the composition dependence of the Tg of this system. A thermodynamic analysis of hydrogen bonding in this system was carried using the Painter‐Coleman association model and the variation of the Gibbs function of mixing and its different contributions and corresponding phase diagrams as a function of temperature and composition were estimated. This analysis predicted PSMA15 to be miscible with PS4VP15 in the whole composition range up to 150 °C. Above this temperature, a partial miscibility is predicted when the PS4VP15 is in excess. The DSC results are in agreement with these predictions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 923–931, 2009  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of biodegradable poly(butylene succinate) and copolyesters poly(butylene succinate‐co‐propylene succinate)s (PBSPS) was investigated by using 1H NMR, DSC and POM, respectively. Isothermal crystallization kinetics of the polyesters has been analyzed by the Avrami equation. The 2.2‐2.8 range of Avrami exponential n indicated that the crystallization mechanism was a heterogeneous nucleation with spherical growth geometry in the crystallization process of polyesters. Multiple melting peaks were observed during heating process after isothermal crystallization, and it could be explained by the melting and recrystallization model. PBSPS was identified to have the same crystal structure with that of PBS by using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), suggesting that only BS unit crystallized while the PS unit was in an amorphous state. The crystal structure of polyesters was not affected by the crystallization temperatures, too. Besides the normal extinction crosses under the POM, the double‐banded extinction patterns with periodic distance along the radial direction were also observed in the spherulites of PBS and PBSPS. The morphology of spherulites strongly depended on the crystallization temperature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 420–428, 2007  相似文献

A blend of two biodegradable and semi‐crystalline polymers, poly (L‐lactic acid) (PLLA; 70 wt%) and poly (butylene succinate‐co‐L‐lactate) (PBSL; 30 wt%), was prepared in the presence of various polyethylene oxide‐polypropylene oxide‐polyethylene oxide (PEO‐PPO‐PEO) triblock copolymer contents (0.5, 1, 2 wt%). Mechanical, thermal properties, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis of the blends were investigated. It was found that the addition of copolymer to PLLA/PBSL improved the fracture toughness of the blends as shown by mode I fracture energies. It was supported by morphological analysis where the brittle deformation behavior of PLLA changed to ductile deformation with the presence of elongated fibril structure in the blend with copolymer system. The glass transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (Tm) of PLLA, and PBSL shift‐closed together indicated that some compatibility exists in the blends. In short, PEO‐PPO‐PEO could be used as compatibilizer to improve the toughness and compatibility of the PLLA/PBSL blends. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Impact‐modified polypropylene (PP)/vermiculite (VMT) nanocomposites toughened with maleated styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) were compounded in a twin‐screw extruder and injection‐molded. VMT was treated with maleic anhydride, which acted both as a compatibilizer for the polymeric matrices and as a swelling agent for VMT in the nanocomposites. The effects of the impact modifier on the morphology and the impact, static, and dynamic mechanical properties of the PP/VMT nanocomposites were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that an exfoliated VMT silicate layer structure was formed in ternary (PP–SEBS‐g‐MA)/VMT nanocomposites. Tensile tests showed that the styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene additions improved the tensile ductility of the (PP–SEBS‐g‐MA)/VMT ternary nanocomposites at the expense of their tensile stiffness and strength. Moreover, Izod impact measurements indicated that the SEBS‐g‐MA addition led to a significant improvement in the impact strength of the nanocomposites. The SEBS‐g‐MA elastomer was found to be very effective at converting brittle PP/VMT organoclay composites into tough nanocomposites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA)/poly(butylene succinate‐co‐butylene adipate) (PBSA) blends were compounded with Cloisite 25A® (C25A) and C25A functionalized with epoxy groups, respectively. Epoxy groups on the surface of C25A were introduced by treating C25A with (glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxy silane (GPS) to produce so called Twice Functionalized Organoclay (TFC). Variation of morphology and properties of PLLA/PBSA/C25A composites was investigated before and after the treatment with GPS. The morphological structure of the composites was analyzed by using X‐ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The silicate layers of PLLA/PBSA/TFC were exfoliated to a larger extent than PLLA/PBSA/C25A. Incorporation of the epoxy groups on C25A improved significantly elongation at break as well as tensile modulus and tensile strength of PLLA/PBSA/C25A. The larger amount of exfoliation of the silicate layers in PLLA/PBSA/TFC as compared with that in PLLA/PBSA/C25A was attributed to the increased interfacial interaction between the polyesters and the clay due to chemical reaction. Thermo gravimetric analysis revealed that both T5%, which was the temperature corresponding to 5% weight loss, and activation energy of thermal decomposition of PLLA/PBSA/TFC were far superior to those of PLLA/PBSA/C25A as well as to those of PLLA/PBSA, indicating that the composites with exfoliated silicate layers were more thermally stable than those with intercalated silicate layers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly (butylene succinate‐co‐butylene adipate) (PBSA)/thiodiphenol (TDP) complexes were prepared by melt blending. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding between carbonyl group of PBSA and hydroxyl group of TDP formed as verified by a combination FTIR and peak fitting technique. As a result, the crystallization temperature, melting temperature, crystallinity and crystallization rate of PBSA decreased with addition of TDP, implying impeded crystallization and reduced lamellar thickness. On the basis of Lauritzen–Hoffman analysis, the fold surface energy (σe) and work of chain folding (q) were increased by TDP incorporation. POM observation exhibited concentric ring‐banded spherulites for samples with 10 and 20 wt% TDP. A peculiar ring‐banded pattern with discrepant band spacing was obtained for the first time by addition of 30 wt% TDP, whose formation mechanism remains to be discussed. The conductivity of styrene‐butadiene‐styrene block copolymers containing different amounts of extraconductive carbon black (CB) was investigated as a function of the mold temperature. The composites exhibited reduced percolation thresholds (between 1.0 and 2.0 vol % CB). The dynamic mechanical analysis characterization revealed that the glass‐rubber‐transition temperatures of both segments were not affected by the CB addition, although the damping of the polybutadiene phase displayed a progressive drop with an increase in the CB concentration. The normalized curves of tan δ/tan δmax (where tan δ represents the value of the loss tangent at any measurement temperature and tan δmax represents the loss tangent peak value at the corresponding temperature Tmax) versus T/Tmax (where T is the temperature and Tmax is the maximum temperature), corresponding to both polystyrene and polybutadiene phases as well as the activation energy related to the glass‐rubber‐transition process, did not present any significant change with the addition of CB. The dielectric analysis revealed the presence of two relaxation peaks in the composite containing 1.5 vol % CB, the magnitude of which was strongly influenced by the frequency, being attributed to interfacial Maxwell‐Wagner‐Sillars relaxations caused by the presence of different interfaces in the composite. The mechanical properties were not affected by the presence of CB at concentrations of up to 2.5 vol %. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 2983–2997, 2003  相似文献

Among the various methods available for recycling plastics waste, blending technology is a straightforward and relatively simple method for recycling. In this paper, a new blending technology, low‐temperature solid‐state extrusion, was discussed. Several recycled poly(terephthalate ethylene)/bisphenol a polycarbonate/poly(styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene) blends (R‐PET/PC/SEBS blends) have been prepared by this technology. The results show that thermal and hydrolytic degradation of R‐PET is improved when extruding temperature was between the glass transition temperature (Tg) and cold crystallization temperature (Tcc). Elongation at break and notched impact strength were increased evidently, from 15.9% to 103.6, and from 8.6 kJ/m2 to 20.4 kJ/m2, respectively. The appropriate rotating speed of screws was between 100 and 150 rpm. At the same time, the appropriate rotating speed of the screws brings a suitable shear viscosity ratio of R‐PET and PC, which is of advantage to blending of R‐PET and PC together with SEBS. Dispersion of minor phase, PC and SEBS, became finer and smaller, to about 1 µm. Chain extender, Methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) can react with the end‐carboxyl group and end‐hydroxyl group of R‐PET. FT‐IR spectra testified that the reactions have been happened in the extruding process. A chain extending reaction not only increased the molecular weight of PET and PC, but also can synthesize PET‐g‐PC copolymer to act as a reactive compatilizer. An SEM micrograph shows that a micro‐fiber structure of PET was formed in the blend sample. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The crystallization kinetics of biodegradable poly(butylene succinate‐co‐adipate) (PBS/A) copolyester was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM), respectively. The Avrami and Ozawa equations were used to analyze the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics, respectively. By using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), PBS/A was identified to have the same crystal structure with that of PBS. The spherulitic growth rates of PBS/A measured in isothermal conditions are very well comparable with those measured by nonisothermal procedures (cooling rates ranged from 0.5 to 15 °C/min). The kinetic data were examined with the Hoffman–Lauritzen nucleation theory. The observed spherulites of PBS/A with different shapes and textures strongly depend on the crystallization temperatures. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melting behavior of poly(butylene succinate‐co‐adipate) (PBSA) isothermally crystallized from the melt was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Triple, double, or single melting endotherms were observed in subsequent heating scan for the samples isothermally crystallized at different temperatures. These endothermic peaks were labeled as I, II, and III for low‐, middle‐, and high‐temperature melting endotherms, respectively. The independence of endotherm III to the crystallization temperature, the existence of an exothermic crystallization peak just below the endotherm III, and the heating rate dependence of endotherm III indicated that endotherm III was due to the remelting of recrystallized lamellar during a heating scan. The influence of crystallization time on the melting behavior of PBSA showed that endotherms II and III developed prior to endotherm I; endotherm III developed rather simultaneously with endotherm II. Further investigation showed that the peak temperature of endotherm I increased linearly with the logarithm of the crystallization time. It suggested that endotherm II was attributed to the melting of the primary lamellae, while endotherm I was due to the melting of secondary lamellae. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melt crystallization behaviors and crystalline structures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(trimethylene terephthalate), and poly(ethylene‐co‐trimethylene terephthalate) (PETT) were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction at various crystallization temperatures (Tcs). The PETT copolymers were synthesized via the polycondensation of terephthalate with ethylene glycol and trimethylene glycol (TG) in various compositions. The copolymers with 69.0 mol % or more TG or 31.0 mol % or less TG were crystallizable, but the other copolymers containing 34–56 mol % TG were amorphous. The DSC isothermal results revealed that the addition of a small amount of flexible TG (up to 21 mol %) to the PET structure slightly reduced the formation of three‐dimensional spherulites. A greater TG concentration (91–100%) in the copolyesters changed the crystal growth from two‐dimensional to three‐dimensional. The DSC heating scans after the completion of isothermal crystallization at various Tcs showed three melting endotherms for PET, PETT‐88, PETT‐84, and PETT‐79 and four melting endotherms for PETT‐9 and PETT. The presence of an additional melting endotherm could be attributed to the melting of thinner and imperfect copolyester crystallites. Analyses of the Lauritzen–Hoffman equation demonstrated that PETT‐88 had the highest values of the product of the lateral and folding surface free energies, and this suggested that the addition of small amounts of flexible trimethylene terephthalate segments to PET disturbed chain regularity, thus increasing molecular chain mobility. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
