The thermomechanical properties, morphology, and gas permeability of hybrids prepared with three types of organoclays were compared in detail. Hexadecylamine–montmorillonite (C16–MMT), dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide–montmorillonite (DTA‐MMT), and Cloisite 25A were used as organoclays in the preparation of nanocomposites. From morphological studies using transmission electron microscopy, most clay layers were found to be dispersed homogeneously in the matrix polymer, although some clusters or agglomerated particles were also detected. The initial degradation temperature (at a 2% weight loss) of the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) hybrid films with C16–MMT and Cloisite 25A decreased linearly with an increasing amount of organoclay. For hybrid films, the tensile properties initially increased but then decreased with the introduction of more of the inorganic phase. The O2 permeability values for all the hybrids for clay loadings up to 10 wt % were less than half the corresponding values for pure PLA, regardless of the organoclay. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, UV-curable resin poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) was reinforced with three different types of nanofillers: pristine graphene (G), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), and a hybrid of MWNTs and graphene 70/30 in mass ratio (Hyb). PEGDA was mixed homogenously with the nanofiller oligomer by shear mixing and then photopolymerized, affording thin, stable films. The thermomechanical properties of the afforded nanocomposites indicated the superior reinforcing ability of pristine graphene compared with MWNTs and an intermediate behavior of the hybrid.  相似文献

Polymer nanocomposites based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) were prepared by melt compounding method followed by compression molding. Different percentage of organically modified nanoclays (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 wt%) was incorporated into the TPU matrix in order to examine the influence of the nanofillers on nanophase morphology and materials' properties. The microstructure morphology of the nanocomposites was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersion X‐ray analysis (EDX), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and atomic force microscope (AFM). The observation established that the organoclay is homogeneously dispersed and preferentially embedded in the TPU soft segment phase. Significant enhancement in the thermal stability of the nanocomposites was observed with the addition of the OMMT under thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Dynamic mechanical properties of the TPU nanocomposites were analyzed using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA), which confirms that the addition of OMMT has a strong influence on the storage and loss modulus of the TPU matrix. Improvements in the thermomechanical properties of epoxy upon inclusion of well-dispersed SiO2 nanoparticles have been demonstrated both experimentally and through molecular dynamics simulations. The SiO2 was represented by two different dispersion models: dispersed individual molecules and as spherical nanoparticles. The calculated thermodynamic and thermomechanical properties were consistent with experimental results. Radial distribution functions highlight the interactions of different parts of the polymer chains with the SiO2 between 3 and 5 nm into the epoxy, depending on the particle size. The findings from both models were verified against experimental results, such as the glass transition temperature and tensile elastic mechanical properties, and proved suitable for predicting thermomechanical and physicochemical properties of epoxy-SiO2 nanocomposites.  相似文献

Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are among the most versatile engineering polymers. The presence of hard and soft segments on their backbone and specific hydrogen bond interactions between the hard segments, provide TPUs with outstanding engineering properties while rendering them as very complex systems to study. Knowledge of morphology–property relationship is essential for TPUs since their thermal and mechanical behavior are directly dictated by their complicated morphology. In this research, TPU morphological features related to the hard segment content (HSC) were explored in tandem with system macroscopic properties. It was observed that TPUs display multiscale phase separated morphology with specific morphological features dependent on the HSC. At a certain critical HSC, an interconnected network of hard segments was formed which resulted in significant changes in TPU properties. This was explained in analogy with percolation phenomena in filler reinforced systems and considering the hard segments as reinforcing agent. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Segmented polyurethane (SPU) nanofiber mats were prepared by electrospinning technique using the combination of four different solvents viz. tetrahydrofuran, N,N′‐dimethyl formamide, N,N′‐dimethyl acetamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide. Morphology of the electrospun nanofibers was examined by field emission scanning electron microscope. Experimental results revealed that the morphologies of polyurethane nanofiber mats have been changed significantly with the solvent selection for the electrospinning. It was observed that the diameters and morphology of the SPU nanofibers were influenced greatly by the use of combination of solvents. The uniform polyurethane nanofibers without beads or curls could be prepared by electrospinning through the selection of combination of good conductive and good volatile solvent viz. 7.5 wt/v% of SPU in N,N′‐dimethyl formamide/tetrahydrofuran (30 : 70 v/v) solutions at 20 kV applied voltages and volume flow rate of 1 ml/min. On the basis of the results obtained from this investigation, it has been established that solvent selection is one of the driving factors for controlling the morphology of the polyurethane electrospun nanofiber mats. The well‐controlled morphology of electrospun polyurethane nanofiber mats could be useful for many potential industrial applications such as in biomedical, smart textiles, nanofiltration, and sensors. A novel clay/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) nanocomposite was synthesized from polyurethane and saponite organoclay. The clay was organically modified with various swelling agents, the effect of which has been investigated. Hydrogen bonding between organic and inorganic materials was characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results implied that hydrogen bonding increased when organoclay was added. Mechanical and wear property studies revealed that introducing clay into waterborne polyurethane will enhance the Young's modulus (from 56 to 126 MPa), the maximum stress (from 3.9 to 7.6 MPa), and the elongation at break (from 27.7 to 58.7%) of the nanocomposite by a factor of two, whereas the wear loss will be only one third of the neat waterborne polyurethane. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to analyze the surface morphology of the nanocomposite. An AFM microphotograph showed that the surface of the clay/waterborne polyurethane nanocomposite was smoother when clay was added in waterborne polyurethane. The average roughness (Ra) decreased from 1.00 to 0.12. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 1–12, 2005  相似文献

Isotactic Polypropylene (iPP) based nanocomposites filled with organo-clay nanoparticles were prepared and the relationships between their structure and properties were investigated. Modified C16-C18 smectite clay nanoparticles were used in order to promote matrix/filler compatibilization and to improve interfacial adhesion. X-Ray analysis performed on the nanocomposites demonstrated that at low organo-clay content (1 and 3% by weight) a nanostructure has been obtained, while in presence of 5% by weight of organoclay cluster regions have been formed. Mechanical tests showed that the elastic modulus increases of about 20% compared to the neat polymeric matrix value when 1 and 3% of nanofiller is added.  相似文献

This paper addresses the effects of operating variables on mechanical properties of polyurethane/clay nanocomposites including tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and hardness. The variables were prepolymer type, clay cation, clay content, and prepolymer–clay mixing time. The experiments were carried out based on the design of experiments using Taguchi methods. The nanocomposites were synthesized via in situ polymerization starting from two different types of prepolymers (polyether‐ and polyester‐types of polyol reacted with toluene diisocyanate), and methylene‐bis‐ortho‐chloroanilline (MOCA) as a chain extender/hardener. Montmorillonite with three types of cation (Na+, alkyl ammonium ion, and MOCA) were examined. Among the parameters studied, prepolymer type and clay cation have the most significant effects on mechanical properties. Polyester nanocomposites showed larger improvements in mechanical properties compared to polyether materials due to higher shear forces exerted by polymer matrix on clay aggregates during polymer–clay mixing. The original MMT with Na+ cation results in weak improvements in mechanical properties compared to organoclays. It is observed that the stress and elongation at break, and abrasion resistance of the nanocomposite samples can be optimized with 1.5% of clay loading. The morphology and chemical structure of the optimum sample were examined by X‐ray diffraction and FT‐IR spectroscopy, respectively. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, different modified polyethylenes with different molar masses and different modification rates were examined as compatibilizers to prepare high density polyethylene/organoclay nanocomposites. Nanocomposites having 5 wt % organo-modified clay and 20 wt % interfacial agent were prepared by melt blending. The effect of compatibilizer molar mass and polarity was investigated on the clay dispersion and on the gas barrier properties. It was observed that the amount of large and dense fillers aggregates was considerably reduced by introduction of an interfacial agent. The nanocomposite final morphology was governed by a diffusion/shear mechanism. A high degree of clay delamination was obtained with the high molar mass compatibilizers, whereas highly swollen clay aggregates resulted from the incorporation of the low molar mass interfacial agents. In the investigated nanocomposites series, the barrier properties could not be directly related to the clay dispersion state but resulted also from the matrix/clay interfacial interactions. A gas transport mechanism based on these both parameters was proposed to explain the barrier properties evolution in these low polar nanocomposites series. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of two different species of layered silicates on the morphology, mechanical properties, and methanol vapor barrier properties of polyamide‐6 (PA6) nanocomposites was examined using identical experimental conditions for both species. The layered silicate species used were natural montmorillonite (MMT) and synthetic expandable fluoro‐mica (FM), the chemical compositions of which were Na0.43(Al1.56Mg0.31Fe2+ 0.09)(Si3.95Al0.05)O10(OH)2 and Na0.66Mg2.68(Si3.98Al0.02)O10F2, respectively. The layered silicates were modified with a dodecylammonium salt (DDA) using an ion‐exchange method. The resulting organically modified layered silicates were melt‐kneaded with PA6 in a twin‐screw kneader at 260 °C. By quantitative analysis of the silicate layers dispersed in the PA6, the number‐average aspect ratio was estimated to be 76 for DDAMMT‐PA6 and 85 for DDAFM‐PA6. This confirmed that the primary particle size of the initial silicate did affect the aspect ratio. The rigidity and gas barrier properties of the nanocomposites appeared to depend upon the morphology of the nanocomposite. On the other hand, the elongation at break of the nanocomposites decreased as the amount of silicate increased. This reduction in ductility was ascribed to the difference in morphology of the nanocomposites, that is, distribution of silicate nanolayers in the polymer matrix. The homogeneity of the particle fraction of exfoliated nanolayers was clearly an important factor affecting the properties of the nanocomposites. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation, characterization and properties of novel millable polyurethane/organoclay nanocomposites are reported. Clay treated with methyl tallow bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) quaternary ammonium chloride was used as an organoclay for nanocomposite preparation. X‐ray diffraction indicated the intercalation of polymer chains inside the interlayer spacings of the clay. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed a significant increase in storage modulus, and tensile strength increases with increased organoclay loading.

The surface modification of montmorillonite clay was carried out through ion‐ exchange reaction using p‐phenylenediamine as a modifier. This modified clay was employed to prepare aromatic polyamide/organoclay nanocomposite materials. The dispersion behavior of clay was examined in the polyamide matrix. Polyamide chains were synthesized from 4‐aminophenyl sulfone and isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) in dimethylacetamide. These amide chains were suitably end‐capped with carbonyl chloride end groups to interact chemically with modified montmorillonite clay. The resulting nanocomposite films containing 2–20 wt% of organoclay were characterized by TEM, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), thin‐film tensile testing; thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and water absorption measurements. Mechanical testing revealed that modulus and strength improved up to 6 wt% organoclay loading while elongation and toughness of nanocomposites decreased with the addition of clay content in the matrix. Thermal decomposition temperatures of the nanocomposites were in the range 225–450 °C. These nanocomposites expressed increase in the glass‐transition temperature values relative to pure polyamide describing interfacial interactions among the phases. The percent water uptake of these composites reduced upon the addition of modified layered silicate depicting improved barrier properties. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the present work, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were incorporated at low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer blend using solution casting method. Monolayer GO with 1‐nm thickness and good transparency was synthesized using the well‐known Hummers's method. Fourier transform infrared and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy data exhibited efficient reduction of GO with almost high C/O ratio of RGO. Scanning electron microscopy showed the well distribution of GO and RGO within LDPE/EVA polymer matrix. The integrating effects of GO and RGO on mechanical and gas permeability of prepared films were examined. Young's modulus of nanocomposites are improved 65% and 92% by adding 7 wt% of GO and RGO, respectively. The tensile measurements showed that maximum tensile strength emerged in 3 wt% of loading for RGO and 5 wt% for GO. The measured oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability represented noticeably the attenuation of gas permeability in composite films compared with pristine LDPE/EVA blend. The recent global pandemic and its tremendous effect on the price fluctuations of crude oil illustrates the side effects of petroleum dependency more evident than ever. Over the past decades, both academic and industrial communities spared endless efforts in order to replace petroleum-based materials with bio-derived resources. In the current study, a series of shape memory polymer composites (SMPC's) was synthesized from epoxidized vegetable oils, namely canola oil and castor oil fatty acids (COFA's) as a 100% bio-based polyol and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as an isocyanate using a solvent/catalyst-free method in order to eventuate polyurethanes (PU's). Thereafter, graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatelets were synthesized and embedded in the neat PU in order to overcome the thermomechanical drawbacks of the neat matrix. The chemical structure of the synthesized components, as well as the dispersion and distribution levels of the nanoparticles, was characterized. In the following, thermal and mechanical properties as well as shape memory behavior of the specimens were comprehensively investigated. Likewise, the thermal conductivity was determined. This study proves that synthesized PU's based on vegetable oil polyols, including graphene nanoparticles, exhibit proper thermal and mechanical properties, which make them stand as a potential candidate to compete with traditional petroleum-based SMPC's.  相似文献

The unison of vegetable oil‐based hyperbranched polymers with nanotechnology can unhook myriad of avant‐garde applications of such materials. Thus Mesua ferrea L. seed oil‐based hyperbranched polyurethane (HBPU)/clay nanocomposites and their performance, with special reference to adhesive strength, are reported for the first time. The nanocomposites of the hyperbranched polyurethane with organically modified nanoclay were obtained by ex situ solution technique and cured by bisphenol‐A‐based epoxy with poly(amido amine) hardener system. The partially exfoliated and well‐distributed structure of nanoclay was confirmed by XRD, SEM, and TEM studies. FTIR spectra indicate the presence of H‐bonding between nanoclay and the polymer matrix. Two times improvement in the adhesive strength and scratch hardness, 10 MPa increments in the tensile strength and 112°C more thermo‐stability have been observed without much affecting the impact resistance, bending, and elongation at break of the nanocomposites compared to the pristine epoxy modified HBPU system. Thus, the resulted nanocomposites are promising materials for different advanced applications including adhesive. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, three chromophores—p‐nitroaniline, 4‐(4‐nitrophenylazo)aniline, and 4‐[(E)‐2‐{4‐[(E)‐2‐(4‐nitrophenyl)‐1‐diazenyl]phenyl}‐1‐diazenyl]aniline—were intercalated into layered aluminosilicate saponite and then dispersed into the polyurethanes matrix. The intercalated chromophore/saponite complexes were examined by inductively coupled plasma emission and element analysis technologies. The molecular orbital package computation simulation and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that possible configurations of chromophore ions on the gallery surfaces of saponite suggest that the chromophore molecules lie parallel to the basal planes of silicate as an inclined paraffin structure or as pseudo‐multilayers. The XRD and transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated that the delamination of organoclay in the polyurethanes matrix exhibited nanolayers, exfoliated structure, or both. In particular, even at high doping levels up to 15 wt % of organoclay, the [chromophore]+‐saponite/polyurethanes film did not display a macroscopic aggregation of layered silicates and showed high transparency. The thermal stability of chromophore was significantly enhanced as intercalated into the layered aluminosilicate saponite, and the glass‐transition temperature of [chromophore]+‐saponite/polyurethanes nanocomposites proportionally increased with increased clay content. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with three different functionalized‐multiwalled nanotubes (F‐MWNTs) are compared in terms of their thermomechanical properties, morphology, oxygen permeability, and optical transparency. The F‐MWNTs dodecanol‐MWNT, dodecylamine‐MWNT, and 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoro‐2‐phenyl‐2‐propanol‐MWNT were combined with PP to produce hybrid films. The variations of their properties with the matrix polymer F‐MWNT content are discussed. Transmission electron microscopy photographs show that most of the F‐MWNTs are dispersed homogeneously in the matrix polymer on the nanoscale, although some agglomerated F‐MWNT particles are formed. Even composites with low F‐MWNT contents (≤3 wt %) exhibit much better thermomechanical values than pure PP. The gas permeability of the hybrids was found to decrease linearly with increases in the F‐MWNT content of the PP matrix. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2010  相似文献

Unique nanocomposites consisting of poly(silicic acid) nanoparticles (PNs) and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) were prepared. The aliphatic WPU prepared in this study was end‐capped with a silanol group, which could react with PNs via a sol–gel process. PNs were modified with phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) and 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl ester (TMPE) and then blended with WPU. The structure–property relationships were examined. Solid‐state 29Si NMR spectra of WPU showed that structures T1, T2, and T3 of WPU decreased and structures Q3 and Q4 of PN/WPU nanocomposites increased gradually. When the PN concentration increased to 10 wt %, PN/WPU nanocomposites exhibited the maximum fraction of hydrogen‐bonded carbonyl groups. In the PTMS–PN and TMPE–PN systems, the fraction of hydrogen‐bonded carbonyl groups fluctuated stably when the concentrations of PTMS–PN and TMPS–PN exceeded 5 wt %. The X‐ray diffraction results revealed that α‐form, γ‐form, or triclinic crystallization could be found in the WPU matrix. A differential scanning calorimetry spectrum showed that the crystalline structure of the hard segment of WPU was influenced by the nanoparticle concentration. The degrees of crystallinity were 88% for the PN/WPU nanocomposites, 41% for the PTMS–PN/WPU nanocomposites, and 54% for the TMPE–PN/WPU nanocomposites when the PN, PTMS–PN, and TMPE–PN concentrations were 5 wt %. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, biodegradable poly(caprolactone) (PCL) hybrids with two types of organoclays: Cloisite 30B (30B) and Cloisite 93A (93A) have been prepared by melt mixing and their barrier performance to air permeation and mechanical properties were investigated. The hybrids of PCL/30B were found to be nanocomposites resulted from the strong interaction between organic modifier of 30B and PCL and those of PCL/93A were microcomposites. The barrier performance of PCL/30B nanocomposite film to air permeation was much more improved than pure PCL and PCL/93A microcomposites at low organoclay concentration. With the increase of organoclay content the permeability coefficient was also increased that could attributed to the extra tortuous pathway for gas permeation caused by organoclay exfoliation. The barrier behaviour of PCL/30B nanocomposites could be approximately described by a theoretical model developed for composites. The mechanical properties measurements showed that the reinforcement of organoclay 30B in nanocomposites is more significant than 93A in microcomposites. Both tensile modulus and tensile strength were increased in PCL/30B nanocomposites even at at low amount of organoclay without much loss of strain at break as compared to pure PCL. The significant improvements in both barrier and mechanical properties in PCL nanocomposites could be attributed to the fine dispersion state of organoclay 30B platelets in PCL matrix and the strong interaction between organic modifier of 30B and matrix molecules.  相似文献
