The crystallization and melting behavior of a series of poly(glycerol adipate) (PGA) based graft copolymers with either poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), or PCL‐b‐PEO diblock copolymer side chains (i.e., PGA‐g‐PCL, PGA‐g‐PEO, and PGA‐g‐(PCL‐b‐PEO)) was studied using polarized light optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). These results were compared with the behavior of the corresponding linear analogs (PEO, PCL, and PCL‐b‐PEO). POM revealed that spherulitic morphology was retained after grafting. However, spherulite radius as well as radial growth rate was significantly smaller in the graft copolymers. Evaluation of isothermal crystallization kinetics by means of the Avrami theory revealed that the nucleation density was much higher in the graft copolymers. The DSC results indicated that the degree of crystallinity decreased strongly upon grafting while the melting temperatures of PGA‐g‐PCL and PGA‐g‐PEO were found to be close to the values of neat PCL and PEO, respectively. This was attributed to the absence of specific thermodynamic interactions, and, additionally, to lamella thicknesses being similar to those of the homopolymers. The latter point was confirmed by SAXS measurements. In case of PCL‐b‐PEO diblock copolymers and PGA‐g‐(PCL‐b‐PEO) graft copolymers, the crystallization behavior and thus the resulting lamellar morphology is more complex, and a suitable model was developed based on a combination of DSC, WAXD, and SAXS data. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers consisting of amorphous main chain, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or poly(methyl acrylate) (PMAc), and crystalline side chains, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), have been prepared by copolymerization of PEG macromonomers with methyl methacrylate or methyl acrylate (MMAx or MACx, respectively). Because of the compatibility of PMMA/PEG and PMAc/PEG, from small‐angle X‐ray scattering results, the main and side chains in graft copolymers were suggested to be homogeneous in the molten state. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) cooling scans revealed that PEG side chains for graft copolymers with large PEG fractions were crystallized when the sample was cooled, with a cooling rate of 10 °C/min. The spherulite pattern observed by a polarized optical microscope suggested the growth of PEG crystalline lamellae. Crystallization of PEG in MMAx was more restrained than in MACx. From these results, we have concluded that the crystallization behavior of the grafted side chains is strongly influenced by the glass transition of a homogeneously molten sample as well as dilution of the crystallizable chains. Domain spacings for isothermally crystallized graft copolymers were described by interdigitating chain packing in crystalline–amorphous lamellar structure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase behavior and crystallization of graft copolymers consisting of poly(n‐hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) as an amorphous main chain and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as crystallizable side chains (HMAx with 15 ≤ x ≤ 73, where x represents the weight percentage of PEG) were investigated. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering profiles measured above the melting temperature of PEG suggested that a microdomain structure with segregated PHMA and PEG domains was formed in HMA40 and HMA46. This phase behavior was qualitatively described by a calculated phase diagram based on the mean‐field theory. Because of the segregation of PEG into microdomains, the crystallization temperature of the PEG side chains in HMAx was higher than that in poly(methyl acrylate)‐graft‐poly(ethylene glycol) having a similar value of x, which was considered to be in a disordered state above the melting temperature. In HMAx with x ≤ 40, PEG crystallization was strongly restricted, probably because the PEG microdomains were isolated in the PHMA matrix. As a result, the growth of PEG spherulite was not observed because the PEG crystallization occurred after vitrification of the PHMA segregated domains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization behaviors and morphology of asymmetric crystalline–crystalline diblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide‐lactide) (PEO‐b‐PLLA) were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and microscopic techniques (polarized optical microscopy (POM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM)). Both blocks of PEO5b‐PLLA16 can be crystallized, which was confirmed by WAXD, while PEO block in PEO5b‐PLLA30 is difficult to crystallize because of the confinement induced by the high glass transition temperature and crystallization of PLLA block with the microphase separation of the block copolymer. Comparing with the crystallization and morphology of PLLA homopolymer and differences between the two copolymers, we studied the influence of PEO block and microphase separation on the crystallization and morphology of PLLA block. The boundary temperature (Tb) was observed, which distinguishes the crystallization into high‐ and low‐temperature ranges, the growth rate and morphology were quite different between the ranges. Crystalline morphologies including banded spherulite, dendritic crystal, and dense branching in PEO5b‐PLLA16 copolymer were formed. The typical morphology of dendritic crystals including two different sectors were observed in PEO5b‐PLLA30 copolymer, which can be explained by secondary nucleation, chain growth direction, and phase separation between the two blocks during the crystallization process. Lozenge‐shaped crystals of PLLA with screw dislocation were also observed employing AFM, but the crystalline morphology of PEO block was not observed using microscopy techniques because of its small size. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis, morphology, and charge‐transporting characteristics of new crystalline–crystalline diblock copolymers, poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐block‐stearyl acrylate) (P3HT‐b‐PSA). Three different diblock copolymers, P1 , P2 , and P3 , with P3HT/PSA polymerization degree block ratios of 60/26, 60/50, and 60/360, respectively, were prepared for investigating the morphology‐property relationship and the dependence of optoelectronic properties on the block copolymer structure. Small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering indicated the presence of both P3HT and PSA crystalline domains and the presence of microphase separation among blocks. The transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy results revealed that the diblock copolymers cast from chlorobenzene, tended to form needle‐like morphologies. The field‐effect mobilities of the diblock copolymers deposited on untreated SiO2 substrates, decreased with increasing PSA block length. In a sharp contrast, the mobilities enhanced with increasing PSA content when the P3HT‐b‐PSA was deposited on phenyltrichlorosilane (PTS)‐treated substrates. The copolymers with a 60/360 P3HT/PSA ratio showed a good mobility of 4 × 10?3 cm2 V?1 s?1 and a high on/off ratio of 7 × 106 on PTS‐treated substrates. This study highlighted the importance of the block ratio, the substrate and self‐assembly structures on the charge transport characteristics of the crystalline–crystalline conjugated diblock copolymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers with polymethyl methacrylate and side chain liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymethacrylate blocks were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The azobenzene content in these copolymers ranges from 52 to 7 wt %. For an azo content down to 20% they exhibit a LC behavior similar to that of the azo homopolymers. Thin films of these copolymers were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A lamellar nanostructure was observed for azo content down to 20 wt %, while no structure is observed for the copolymer with a 7% azo content. The optical anisotropy induced in these films by illumination with linearly polarized 488 nm light was studied and the results compared with those of the azo homopolymer and of a random copolymer with a similar composition. The formation of azo aggregates inside the azo blocks is strongly reduced in going from the homopolymer to the copolymers. Photoinduced azo orientation perpendicular to the 488 nm light polarization was found in all the polymers. The orientational order parameter is very similar in the homopolymer and in the block copolymers with an azo content down to 20 wt %, while it is much lower in the random copolymer and in the 7 wt %. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Side‐chain liquid‐crystalline‐b‐amorphous copolymers combine the thermotropic ordering of liquid crystals (LCs) with the physics of block copolymer phase segregation. In our earlier experiments, we observed that block copolymer order–order and order–disorder transitions could be induced by LC transitions. Here we report the development of a free‐energy model to understand the interplay between LC ordering and block copolymer morphology in an incompressible melt. The model considers the interaction between LC moieties, the stretching of amorphous chains from curved interfaces, interfacial surface contributions, and elastic deformation of the nematic phase. The LC block is modeled with Wang and Warner's theory, in which nematogens interact through mean‐field potentials, and the LC backbone is modeled as a wormlike chain. Free energy is estimated for various morphologies: homogeneous, lamellar, cylinder micelle, and spherical micelle. Phase diagrams were constructed by iteration over temperature and composition ranges. The resulting composition diagrams are highly asymmetric, and a variety of first‐order transitions are predicted to occur at the LC clearing temperature. Qualitatively, nematic deformation energies destabilize curved morphologies, especially when the LC block is in the center of the block copolymer micelle. The thermodynamics of diblocks with laterally attached, side‐on mesogens are also explored. Discussion focuses on how well the model captures experimental phenomena and how the predicted phase boundaries are affected by changes in polymer architecture. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Graft copolymers consisting of the polyacetal backbone substituted with ? COO? groups and poly(oxyethylene) (POE) side chains in different proportions were synthesized, and their efficiency as modifiers of the processes occurring at the interphase between inorganic particles and the surrounding aqueous phase was studied. The series of double hydrophilic graft copolymers (DHGC) was obtained differing in the length of the main chain, the number of carboxylate groups, and the number of POE side chains in the macromolecule. Studies of the effect of DHGC on the stability of aqueous calcium carbonate (CaCO3) suspensions and on the shape and size of the CaCO3 crystals formed in the presence of DHGC allowed us to draw some conclusions concerning the effect of the structure of DHGC on their efficiency as modifiers of the processes occurring at the interphase between inorganic particles and the surrounding aqueous phase. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel “jellyfish‐like” graft copolymers with chitooligosaccharide (COS) as shorter backbone and poly(ε‐caprolactone) as longer branches were synthesized using ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone via a protection‐polymerization‐deprotection procedure with trimethylsilylchitooligosaccharide as intermediate and triethylaluminum as catalyst precursor. The obtained chitooligosaccharide‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) polymers possess amphiphilic structure with hydrophilic COS backbone and hydrophobic polycaprolactone branches. Because of this unique “jellyfish‐like” structure, these graft copolymers could self‐assemble to form various morphologies of aggregates in a mixture solution of water and tetrahydrofuran. The transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the formed aggregates exhibited necklace‐like, flower‐like onion vesicle, and tubular morphologies. It is found that the hydrogen‐bonding formed by the hydroxyl and amino groups remained on the COS backbone played an important role during the aggregation of these graft copolymers, and their morphologies were changed with the varying length of poly (ε‐caprolactone) branches, the concentration of the graft copolymer, and the self‐assembly process. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Solution self‐assembly of amphiphilic “rod‐coil” copolymers, especially linear block copolymers and graft copolymers (also referred to as polymer brushes), has attracted considerable interest, as replacing one of the blocks of a coil‐coil copolymer with a rigid segment results in distinct self‐assembly features compared with those of the coil‐coil copolymer. The unique interplay between microphase separation of the rod and coil blocks with great geometric disparities can lead to the formation of unusual morphologies that are distinctly different from those known for coil‐coil copolymers. This review presents the recent achievements in the controlled self‐assembly of rod‐coil linear block copolymers and graft copolymers in solution, focusing on copolymer systems containing conjugated polymers, liquid crystalline polymers, polypeptides, and polyisocyanates as the rod segments. The discussions concentrate on the principle of controlling over the morphology of rod‐coil copolymer assemblies, as well as their distinctive optical and optoelectronic properties or biocompatibility and stimuli‐responsiveness, which afford the assemblies great potential as functional materials particularly for optical, optoelectronic and biological applications. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel comblike mesogen-jacketed liquid-crystalline graft copolymers, poly(p-phenylene)-g-poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PPP-g-PMPCS) copolymers, have been designed and successfully synthesized by a Yamamoto coupling reaction and subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 1H NMR spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectra, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) have been used to confirm the molecular structure of the macroinitiator and the copolymers. A study of the polymerization kinetics of ATRP has shown that the molecular weight of the copolymer increases linearly with the conversion of the monomer, whereas the polydispersity remains narrow (≤1.28), indicating that the ATRP of 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene is well controlled. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements have indicated that the PPP-g-PMPCS copolymers have better thermal stabilities than the macroinitiator, and their thermal stabilities increase with increasing molecular weight. The liquid-crystalline behavior has been examined with polarized optical microscopy, DSC, one-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (1D WAXD), and two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (2D WAXD). The results show that all the comblike copolymers exhibit obvious liquid-crystalline behaviors, even though the GPC molecular weight of the segments of poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS) have been determined to be far less than the critical value of linear PMPCS. Moreover, 1D WAXD measurements show that the temperature at which the comblike mesogen-jacketed liquid-crystalline copolymers can transform into a liquid-crystalline phase is low; about 20 °C in comparison with the linear ones. 2D WAXD analysis has revealed that these comblike copolymers should be assigned to a hexatic columnar nematic (ΦHN) phase. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel comb polymers, poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene}‐g‐polystyrene (PMPCS‐g‐PS), with mesogen‐jacketed rigid side chains were synthesized by the “grafting onto” method from α‐yne‐terminated PMPCS (side chain) and poly(vinylbenzyl azide) (backbone) by Cu(I)‐catalyzed 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition click reaction. The α‐yne‐terminated PMPCS was synthesized by Cu(I)‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization initiated by a yne‐functional initiator. Poly(vinylbenzyl azide) was prepared by polymerizing vinylbenzyl chloride using nitroxide mediated radical polymerization to obtain poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) as the precursor which was then converted to the azide derivative. The chemical structure and architectures of PMPCS comb polymers were confirmed by 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and multiangle laser light scattering. Both surface morphologies and solution behaviors were investigated. Surface morphologies of PMPCS combs on different surfaces were investigated by scanning probe microscopy. PMPCS combs showed different aggregation morphologies when depositing on silicon wafers with/without chemical modification. The PMPCS comb polymers transferred to polymer‐modified silicon wafers using the Langmuir‐Blodgett technique showed a worm‐like chain conformation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated new polyaniline copolymers with solvent‐mimic side chains for enhanced processability in various solvents. The solvent‐mimic side chains, benzyloxypropoxy (BOP), phenoxybutoxy (POB), and dihydroxypropoxy (DHP), were introduced into copolymers and used with nonpolar aromatic and polar alcoholic solvents, respectively. Compared to a polyaniline homopolymer, polyaniline copolymers with a small amount of side chains (<4 mol %) exhibit different physical properties, including film‐forming ability. This can be attributed to the solvent‐mimic side chains strongly interacting with the solvent and/or the polyaniline backbone. Especially, in nonpolar aromatic solvents, polyaniline copolymers with nonpolar aromatic BOP and POB side chains exhibit good film‐forming ability leading to high electrical conductivity, while the polyaniline homopolymer did not form a film. Therefore, introducing solvent‐mimic side chains in conducting polymers is a very attractive method of enhancing their processability and physical properties. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Dendritic rod structures can be formed via the branching of dendritic elements from a primary polymer backbone; such systems present an opportunity to create nanoscale material structures with highly functional exterior regions. In this work, we report for the first time the synthesis of a hybrid diblock copolymer possessing a linear–dendritic rod architecture. These block copolymers consist of a linear poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(ethylene imine) diblock copolymer around which poly(amido amine) branches have been divergently synthesized from the poly(ethylene imine) block. The dendritic branches are terminated with amine or ester groups for the full generations and half‐generations, respectively; however, the methyl ester terminal groups can also be readily converted into alkyl groups of various lengths, and this allows us to tune the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature of the dendritic block and, therefore, the amphiphilic properties of the diblock copolymer and its tendencies toward microphase separation. The block copolymers exhibit semicrystallinity due to the presence of the poly(ethylene oxide) block; however, as the polymer fraction consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) decreases, the overall crystallinity also decreases, and it approaches zero at generation 2.0 and higher. The unfunctionalized block copolymers show weak phase segregation in transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry at all generations. The addition of n‐alkyl chains increases phase segregation, particularly at high alkyl lengths. The generation 3.5 polymer with n‐dodecyl alkyl substitution has a rodlike or wormlike morphology consisting of domains of 4.1 nm, equivalent to the estimated cross section of the individual polymer chains. In this case, the nanometer scale of the polymer chains can be directly observed with transmission electron microscopy. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylethylene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PEE‐PEO) diblock copolymers with pyridine‐benzoic acid end‐groups for heterodimeric hydrogen bonding were designed as a possible means to noncentrosymmetric organizations by spontaneous self‐assembly. These end‐functionalized polymers were synthesized by anionic living polymerization with protected initiator and terminating reagents. A series of polymeric intermediates with different end‐groups was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. Preliminary studies of solid‐state organization by differential scanning calorimetry and small‐angle X‐ray scattering provided evidence for a long‐range order that was sensitive to chain length, copolymer composition, and end‐group structure. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Well‐defined azobenzene‐containing side‐chain liquid crystalline diblock copolymers composed of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) and poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) were synthesized by click reaction from alkyne‐ and azide‐functionalized homopolymers. The alkyne‐terminated PMMAZO homopolymers were synthesized by copper‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization with a bromine‐containing alkyne bifunctional initiator, and the azido‐terminated PBLG homopolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate‐N‐carboxyanhydride in DMF at room temperature using an amine‐containing azide initiator. The thermotropic phase behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers in bulk were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light microscopy. The PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase when the weight fraction of PMMAZO block was more than 50%. Photoisomerization behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers and the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers in solid film and in solution were investigated using UV–vis. In solution, trans–cis isomerization of diblock copolymers was slower than that of the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers. These results may provide guidelines for the design of effective photoresponsive anisotropic materials. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

A series of polystyrene‐b‐(poly(2‐(2‐bromopropionyloxy) styrene)‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate)) (PS‐b‐(PBPS‐g‐PMMA)) and polystyrene‐b‐(poly(2‐(2‐bromopropionyloxy)ethyl acrylate)‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate)) (PS‐b‐(PBPEA‐g‐PMMA)) as new coil‐comb block copolymers (CCBCPs) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The linear diblock copolymer polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐acetoxystyrene) and polystyrene‐b‐poly(2‐(trimethylsilyloxy)ethyl acrylate) PS‐b‐P(HEA‐TMS) were obtained by combining ATRP and activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) ATRP. Secondary bromide‐initiating sites for ATRP were introduced by liberation of hydroxyl groups via deprotection and subsequent esterification reaction with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. Grafting of PMMA onto either the PBPS block or the PBPEA block via ATRP yielded the desired PS‐b‐(PBPS‐g‐PMMA) or PS‐b‐(PBPEA‐g‐PMMA). 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography data indicated the target CCBCPs were successfully synthesized. Preliminary investigation on selected CCBCPs suggests that they can form ordered nanostructures via microphase separation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Amphiphilic graft copolymers of definite composition were obtained by grafting of amino-functionalized poly(oxyethylene) monoether (MPEO–NH2) of M?n = 750, 2000, and 5000 onto phthalimidoacrylate (PIA) homopolymer or its copolymer with styrene (St). The radical co-polymerization of PIA and phthalimidomethacrylate (PIMA) with St was studied in dimeth-ylformamide (DMF) at 60°C. The copolymer composition curves and the monomer reactivity ratios showed a high tendency of PIA to alternating copolymerization with St (r1r2 = 0.006). Hydrogen bonding between the functional groups leads to significant spectral modifications. The micellization of the graft copolymers was studied by GPC in aqueous-methanolic eluent. The aggregation behavior of the graft copolymers depended on their composition and chromato-graphic separation lead to the copolymers fractionation. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Thermoresponsive brush copolymers with poly(propylene oxide‐ran‐ethylene oxide) side chains were synthesized via a “grafting from” technique. Poly(p‐hydroxystyrene) was used as the backbone, and the brush copolymers were prepared by random copolymerization of mixtures of oxyalkylene monomers, using metal‐free anionic ring‐opening polymerization, with the phosphazene base (t‐BuP4) being the polymerization promoter. By controlling the monomer feed ratios in the graft copolymerization, two samples with the same side‐chain length and different compositions were prepared, both of which possessed high molecular weights and low molecular weight distributions. The results from light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that the brush copolymers in their dilute aqueous solutions were near completely solvated at low temperature and underwent slight intramolecular chain contraction/association and much more profound intermolecular aggregation at different stages of the step‐by‐step heating process. Above 50 °C, very turbid solutions, followed by macrophase separation, were observed for both of the samples, which implied that it was difficult for the brush copolymers to form stable nanoscopic aggregates at high temperature. All these observations were attributed, at least partly, to the distribution of the oxyalkylene monomers along the side chains and the overall brush‐like molecular architecture. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The demand of stretchability for a semiconducting polymer has increased to realize wearable devices and sensors. However, studies involving intrinsically stretchable π‐conjugated polymers are still limited. Here, we develop a soft‐polythiophene derivative, P3SiHT, with a trisiloxane unit in the side chains via a hexylene spacer unit. In addition, diblock (P3HT‐b‐P3SiHT) and triblock (P3HT‐b‐P3SiHT‐b‐P3HT) copolymers could be synthesized based on Kumada catalyst‐transfer polycondensation. The results of atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering indicate that the block copolymer thin films form a phase‐separated structure between the P3HT and P3SiHT domains. The organic thin film transistor devices were prepared to assess the electrical properties of the block polymers. As a result, the block copolymers showed comparable or even higher hole mobility than that of P3HT homopolymer, thus due to the enhanced phase‐separation and thereby charge transportation. The mechanical test of the bulk films indicates that P3HT‐b‐P3SiHT‐b‐P3HT shows lower tensile modulus and longer elongation at break than P3HT homopolymer and other diblock copolymers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
