A novel vinyl‐hydantoin monomer, 3‐(4′‐vinylbenzyl)‐5,5‐dimethylhydantoin, was synthesized in a good yield and was fully characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H NMR spectra. Its homopolymer and copolymers with several common acrylic and vinyl monomers, such as vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, and methyl methacrylate, were readily prepared under mild conditions. The polymers were characterized with FTIR and 1H NMR, and their thermal properties were analyzed with differential scanning calorimetry studies. The halogenated products of the corresponding copolymers exhibited potent antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, and the antibacterial properties were durable and regenerable. The structure–property relationships of the polymers were further discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3348–3355, 2001  相似文献

Dimethyl bicyclobutane‐1,3‐dicarboxylate was synthesized. Its homopolymer (PDBD) containing exclusively cyclobutane rings in its backbone was prepared by free radical polymerization. The copolymers of this bicyclobutane monomer with methyl methacrylate were also prepared. The glass transition temperature of the homopolymer is 159°C, while those of its copolymers are 143 and 121°C with 75/25 and 50/50 of the P(DBD/MMA) composition ratio, respectively. The Tg of PDBD homopolymer is substantially higher than that of commercial PMMA homopolymer despite a lower molecular weight, and is also much higher than that of its monomethyl cyclobutanecarboxylate analogue. These DBD homopolymer and copolymers also show better thermostability than the PMMA homopolymer. The weight‐average molecular weight of homopolymer is 37,000. The polydispersities of these polymers are relatively narrow, with the range of 1.6–1.9. These polymers form clear colorless films resembling PMMA film. The DBD homopolymer film shows a very similar optical cutoff compared to PMMA. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 1569–1575, 1999  相似文献

Novel phosphorus‐containing acrylate monomers were synthesized by two different routes. The first involved the reaction of ethyl α‐chloromethyl acrylate and t‐butyl α‐bromomethyl acrylate with diethylphosphonoacetic acid. The monomers were bulk‐ and solution‐polymerized at 56–64 °C with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile. The ethyl ester monomer showed a high crosslinking tendency under these conditions. The selective hydrolysis of the ethyl ester phosphonic ester compound was carried out with trimethylsilyl bromide, producing a phosphonic acid monomer. In the second route, ethyl α‐hydroxymethyl acrylate and t‐butyl α‐hydroxymethyl acrylate were reacted with diethylchlorophosphate. The bulk homopolymerization and copolymerization of these monomers with methyl methacrylate and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile gave soluble polymers. The attempted hydrolysis of the monomers was unsuccessful because of the loss of the diethylphosphate group. The relative reactivities of the monomers in the photopolymerizations were also compared. The ethyl α‐hydroxymethyl acrylate/diethylphosphonic acid monomer showed higher reactivity than the other monomers, which may explain the crosslinking during the polymerization of this monomer. The reactivities of other derivatives were similar, but the rates of polymerization were slow in comparison with those of methyl methacrylate. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of acrylates in ionic liquid, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexaflurophospate, with the CuBr/CuBr2/amine catalytic system was investigated. Sequential polymerization was performed by synthesizing AB block copolymers. Polymerization of butyl acrylate (monomer that is only partly soluble in an ionic liquid forming a two‐phase system) proceeded to practically quantitative conversion. If the second monomer (methyl acrylate) is added at this stage, polymerization proceeds, and block copolymer formed is essentially free of homopolymer according to size exclusion chromatographic analysis. The number‐average molecular weight of the copolymer is slightly higher than calculated, but the molecular weight distribution is low (Mw/Mn = 1.12). If, however, methyl acrylate (monomer that is soluble in an ionic liquid) is polymerized at the first stage, then butyl acrylate in the second‐stage situation is different. Block copolymer free of homopolymer of the first block (with Mw/Mn = 1.13) may be obtained only if the conversion of methyl acrylate at the stage when second monomer is added is not higher than 70%. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight analysis confirmed that irreversible deactivation of growing macromolecules is significant for methyl acrylate polymerization at a monomer conversion above 70%, whereas it is still not significant for butyl acrylate even at practically quantitative conversion. These results show that ATRP of butyl acrylate in ionic liquid followed by addition of a second acrylate monomer allows the clean synthesis of block copolymers by one‐pot sequential polymerization even if the first stage is carried out to complete conversion of butyl acrylate. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two phosphorus‐containing acrylate monomers were synthesized from the reaction of ethyl α‐chloromethyl acrylate and t‐butyl α‐bromomethyl acrylate with triethyl phosphite. The selective hydrolysis of the ethyl ester monomer with trimethylsilyl bromide (TMSBr) gave a phosphonic acid monomer. The attempted bulk polymerizations of the monomers at 57–60 °C with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) were unsuccessful; however, the monomers were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk at 60 °C with AIBN. The resulting copolymers produced chars on burning, showing potential as flame‐retardant materials. Additionally, α‐(chloromethyl)acryloyl chloride (CMAC) was reacted with diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate to obtain a new monomer with identical ester and ether moieties. This monomer was hydrolyzed with TMSBr, homopolymerized, and copolymerized with MMA. The thermal stabilities of the copolymers increased with increasing amounts of the phosphonate monomer in the copolymers. A new route to highly reactive phosphorus‐containing acrylate monomers was developed. A new derivative of CMAC with mixed ester and ether groups was synthesized by substitution, first with diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate and then with sodium acetate. This monomer showed the highest reactivity and gave a crosslinked polymer. The incorporation of an ester group increased the rate of polymerization. The relative reactivities of the synthesized monomers in photopolymerizations were determined and compared with those of the other phosphorous‐containing acrylate monomers. Changing the monomer structure allowed control of the polymerization reactivity so that new phosphorus‐containing polymers with desirable properties could be obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐containing quasi‐model amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCNs) were prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using α,ω‐bis(2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate)‐PEG as a bifunctional RAFT macrochain transfer agent (macro‐CTA) and stepwise additions of a hydrophobic monomer and a crosslinker (crosslinker: macro‐CTA = 10:1, reaction time 24 h). Three different types of monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA), n‐butyl acrylate and styrene, were employed as the hydrophobic monomers, whereas ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate and 1,4‐divinylbenzene served as the respective crosslinkers. PEG homopolymer hydrophilic quasi‐model networks were also prepared by RAFT‐polymerizing the three crosslinkers directly onto the two active ends of the PEG‐based macro‐CTA. From the three ABA triblock copolymers prepared, the MMA‐containing one was obtained at the highest polymerization yields. The crosslinking yields of the three ABA triblock copolymers with the corresponding crosslinkers were higher than those of the PEG‐based macro‐CTA with the same crosslinkers. The degrees of swelling (DSs) of all conetworks were measured in water and in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The DSs of the APCNs in THF were higher than those in water, whereas the reverse was true for the DSs of the hydrophilic homopolymer networks. Finally, the aqueous DSs of the APCNs were lower than those of the corresponding hydrophilic homopolymer networks. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐Chloro‐3‐methyl phenyl methacrylate (CMPM) and 8‐quinolinyl methacrylate (8‐QMA) were synthesized through the reaction of 4‐chloro‐3‐methyl phenol and 8‐hydroxy quinoline, respectively, with methacryloyl chloride. The homopolymers and copolymers were prepared by free‐radical polymerization with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator at 70 °C. Copolymers of CMPM and 8‐QMA of different compositions were prepared. The monomers were characterized with IR spectroscopy and 1H NMR techniques. The copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy. UV spectroscopy was used to obtain the compositions of the copolymers. The monomer reactivity ratios were calculated with the Fineman–Ross method. The molecular weights and polydispersity values of the copolymers were determined with gel permeation chromatography. The thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis under a nitrogen atmosphere. The homopolymers and copolymers were tested for their antimicrobial activity againstbacteria, fungi, and yeast. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New materials with potential applications for adhesives and coatings, based on copolymers containing zwitterionic pendent groups, were investigated. n‐Butyl acrylate and 2‐ethoxyethyl acrylate were copolymerized with a series of five zwitterionic sulfobetaine monomers. The structure of the monomers was varied in terms of the zwitterion intercharge spacing and the bulkiness of the alkyl substituents at the quaternary ammonium unit. Four of the five zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBM) monomers used in the study were synthesized. An evaluation of the reactivity ratios for the copolymer systems was performed with programs based on statistically sound techniques such as the error‐in‐variables model and the nonlinear‐least‐squares method. Reactivity ratio estimates for all 10 comonomer pairs were obtained, and they showed clear variations in reactivity with the structure of the SBM. In general, the more hydrophobic the SBM was, the lower its reactivity was with respect to the acrylate monomers. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The ability of 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone (VDM), a highly reactive functional monomer, to produce block copolymers by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) sequential polymerization with methyl acrylate (MA), styrene (S), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated using cumyl dithiobenzoate (CDB) and 2‐cyanoisopropyl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as chain transfer agents. The results show that PS‐b‐PVDM and PMA‐b‐PVDM well‐defined block copolymers can be prepared either by polymerization of VDM from PS‐ and PMA‐macroCTAs, respectively, or polymerization of S and MA from a PVDM‐macroCTA. In contrast, PMMA‐b‐PVDM block copolymers with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity can only be obtained by using PMMA as the macroCTA. Ab initio calculations confirm the experimental studies. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

A series of well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers bearing hydrophobic poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone and hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)] (PPEGMEMA) side chains were synthesized by sequential reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) without any polymeric functional group transformation. A new Br‐containing acrylate monomer, tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromoisobutanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate (tBBIBMA), was first prepared, which can be homopolymerized by RAFT to give a well‐defined PtBBIBMA homopolymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.15). This homopolymer with pendant Br initiation group in every repeating unit initiated SET‐LRP of PEGMEMA at 45 °C using CuBr/dHbpy as catalytic system to afford well‐defined PtBBIBMA‐g‐PPEGMEMA graft copolymers via the grafting‐from strategy. The self‐assembly behavior of the obtained graft copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and TEM. These copolymers were found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ions. Finally, poly(acrylic acid)‐g‐PPEGMEMA double hydrophilic graft copolymers were obtained by selective acidic hydrolysis of hydrophobic PtBA backbone while PPEGMEMA side chains kept inert. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABA block copolymers of methyl methacrylate and methylphenylsilane were synthesized with a methodology based on atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction of samples of α,ω‐dihalopoly(methylphenylsilane) with 2‐hydroxyethyl‐2‐methyl‐2‐bromoproprionate gave suitable macroinitiators for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate. The latter procedure was carried out at 95 °C in a xylene solution with CuBr and 2,2‐bipyridine as the initiating system. The rate of the polymerization was first‐order with respect to monomer conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry was used to obtain preliminary evidence of phase separation in the copolymer products. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone/methyl acrylate (V/M) copolymers were prepared by free‐radical bulk polymerization using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The copolymer composition of these copolymers was calculated from 1H NMR spectra. The radical reactivity ratios for N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (V) and methyl acrylate (M) were rV = 0.09, rM = 0.44. These reactivity ratios for the copolymerization of V and M were determined using the Kelen–Tudos and nonlinear least‐squares error‐in‐variable methods. The 13C{1H} and 1H NMR spectra of these copolymers overlapped and were complex. The complete spectral assignment of the 13C and 1H NMR spectra were done with distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer and two dimensional 13C‐1H heteronuclear single quantum correlation spectroscopic experiments. The two‐dimensional 1H‐1H homonuclear total correlation spectroscopic NMR spectrum showed the various bond interactions, thus inferring the possible structure of the copolymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Optically active polymers bearing chiral units at the side chain were prepared via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in the presence of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)/benzyl dithiobenzoate (BDB), using a synthesized 6‐Op‐vinylbenzyl‐1,2:3,4‐Di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐galactopyranose (VBPG) as the monomer. The experimental results suggested that the polymerization of the monomer proceeded in a living fashion, providing chiral group polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions. The optically active nature of the obtained poly (6‐Op‐vinylbenzyl‐1,2:3,4‐Di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐galactopyranose) (PVBPG) was studied by investigating the dependence of specific rotation on the molecular weight of PVBPG and the concentration of PVBPG in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The results showed the specific rotation of PVBPG increased greatly with the decrease of the concentration of the PVBPG homopolymer. In addition, the effect of block copolymers of PVBPG on the optically active nature was also investigated by preparing a series of diblock copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)‐b‐PVBPG, polystyrene (PS)‐b‐PVBPG, and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA)‐b‐PVBPG. It was found that both the homopolymer and the diblock copolymers possessed specific rotations. Finally, the ability of chiral recognition of the PVBPG homopolymer was investigated via an enantiomer‐selective adsorption experiment. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of 2‐naphthyl acrylate (2NA) initiated by 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile were investigated with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl 1‐dithionaphthalate (CPDN) as a RAFT agent at various temperatures in a benzene solution. The results of the polymerizations showed that 2NA could be polymerized in a controlled way by RAFT polymerization with CPDN as a RAFT agent; the polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration, and the molecular weight increased linearly with the monomer conversion. The polydispersities of the polymer were relatively low up to high conversions in all cases. The chain‐extension reactions of poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate) (P2NA) with methyl methacrylate and styrene successfully yielded poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate)‐b‐polystyrene block polymers, respectively, with narrow polydispersities. The P2NA obtained by RAFT polymerization had a strong ultraviolet absorption at 270 nm, and the molecular weights had no apparent effect on the ultraviolet absorption intensities; however, the fluorescence intensity of P2NA increased as the molecular weight increased and was higher than that of 2NA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the monomer reactivity ratios for copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and a reactive monomer, 2‐vinyl‐4,4′‐dimethylazlactone (VDMA), using the Fineman–Ross, inverted Fineman–Ross, Kelen–Tudos, extended Kelen–Tudos, and Tidwell–Mortimer methods at low and high polymer conversions. Copolymers were obtained by radical polymerization initiated by 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile in methyl ethyl ketone solutions and were analyzed by NMR, gas chromatography (GC), and gel permeation chromatography. 1H NMR analysis was used to determine the molar fractions of MMA and VDMA in the copolymers at both low and high conversions. GC analysis determined the molar fractions of the monomers at conversions of less than 27% and greater than 65% for the low‐ and high‐conversion copolymers, respectively. The reactivity ratios indicated a tendency toward random copolymerization, with a higher rate of consumption of VDMA at high conversions. For both low‐ and high‐conversion copolymers, the molecular weights increased with increasing molar fractions of VDMA, and this was consistent with the faster consumption of VDMA (compared with that of MMA). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The partly fluorinated monomers, 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate (3FM), 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5‐octafluoropentyl methacrylate (8FM), and 1,1,2,2‐tetrahydroperfluorodecyl methacrylate (17FM) have been used in the preparation of block copolymers with methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2‐methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA), and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. A kinetic study of the 3FM homopolymerization initiated with ethyl bromoisobutyrate and Cu(I)Br/N‐(n‐propyl)‐2‐pyridylmethanimine reveals a living/controlled polymerization in the range 80–110 °C, with apparent rate constants of 1.6 · 10−4 s−1 to 2.9 · 10−4 s−1. Various 3FM containing block copolymers with MMA are prepared by sequential monomer addition or from a PMMA macroinitiator in all cases with controlled characteristics. Block copolymers of 3FM and PEGMA resulted in block copolymers with PDI < 1.22, whereas block copolymers from 3FM and MEA have less controlled characteristics. The block copolymers based on MMA with 8FM and 17 FM have PDI's < 1.30. The glass transition temperatures of the block copolymers are dominated by the majority monomer, as the sequential monomer addition results in too short pure blocks to induce observable microphase separation. The thermal stability of the fluorinated poly((meth)acrylate)s in inert atmosphere is less than that of corresponding nonfluorinated poly((meth)acrylate)s. The presence of fluorinated blocks significantly increases the advancing water contact angle of thin films compared to films of the nonfluorinated poly((meth)acrylate)s. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethyl‐(ECA) and butyl‐2‐cyanoacrylate (BCA) monomers of high purity and acidic stabilization were synthesized and anionically polymerized to homo‐ and copolymers in two different ways: by piperidine‐catalyzed bulk polymerization leading to transparent, brittle films (method A) and by polymerization in aqueous medium in the presence of sodium bicarbonate to obtain white powders (Method B). The molecular structure of the synthesized monomers, homopolymers and copolymers were corroborated by spectral methods. The polymers were studied further by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Controlling the composition of the monomer feed and the way the polymerization was performed, it was possible to obtain phase separated or homogeneous cyanoacrylate copolymers with glass transitions varying between the Tg of polyECA and that of polyBCA. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization of multifunctional acrylate monomers generates crosslinked polymers that are noted for their mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. A common reactive diluent to photopolymerizable formulations is N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), which is known to reduce the inhibition of free radical photopolymerization by atmospheric oxygen. In this work, the copolymerization behavior of NVP was examined in acrylate monomers with two to five functional groups. At concentrations as low as 2 wt %, NVP increases the polymerization rate in copolymerization with multifunctional acrylate monomer. The relative rate enhancement associated with adding NVP increases dramatically as the number of acrylate double bonds changes from two to five. The influence of NVP on polymerization kinetics is related to synergistic cross‐propagation between NVP and acrylate monomer, which becomes increasingly favorable with diffusion limitations. This synergy extends bimolecular termination into higher double bond conversion through reaction diffusion controlled termination. Copolymerizing concentrations of 5–30 DB% NVP with diacrylate or pentaacrylate monomer also increases Young's modulus and the glass transition temperature (Tg) in comparison to neat acrylate polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
