Electromagnetic interactions of high-energy nuclei in ultraperipheral collisions are considered. Such collisions, which take place without any overlap of nuclear densities, can be considered as irradiation of nuclei by intense photon beams with a broad energy spectrum. This leads to several unusual phenomena, such as mutual electromagnetic excitation of nuclei, including exotic double and triple excitations of giant resonances, and multifragmentation of nuclei. The RELDIS model is presented, which describes fragmentation of nuclei and meson production by equivalent photons. It is shown that the RHIC and LHC colliders provide unique opportunities to study electromagnetic interactions of ultrarelativistic nuclei. The cross sections calculated by the RELDIS model are used in the method of monitoring the LHC luminosity on the basis of neutron emission rates, as well as to simulate interactions of beam nuclei with LHC construction elements.  相似文献

The heavy and medium nuclei with angular high momentum are reconsidered. The study of these nuclei is introduced according to the way of building up the angular momentum. At high angular momentum, the moments of inertia of that nuclei are investigated. A study for the path of the Yrast spectra is given in the deformation space. Then, the nuclear collective motions and the single particle motion in a rotating field are considered and studied in both cases of the absence and the presence of pair correlations.  相似文献

The N(p)N(n) scheme, which has been extensively applied to even-even nuclei, is found to be a very good benchmark for odd-even, even-odd, and doubly-odd nuclei as well. There are no apparent shifts in the correlations for these four classes of nuclei. The compact correlations highlight the deviant behavior of the Z = 78 nuclei and are used to deduce effective valence proton numbers near Z = 64 as well as to study the evolution of the Z = 64 subshell gap.  相似文献

The silk glands of bees are a good model for the study of cell death in insects. With the objective to detect the nuclear features during glandular regression stage, larvae at the last instar and pre-pupae were collected and their silk glands were dissected and processed for ultrastructural analysis and histologically for cytochemical and imunocytochemical analysis. The results showed that the cellular nuclei exhibited characteristics of death by atypical apoptosis as well as autophagic cell death. Among the apoptosis characteristic were: nuclear strangulation with bleb formation in some nuclei, DNA fragmentation in most of the nuclei and nucleolar fragmentation. Centripetal chromatin compaction was observed in many nuclei, forming a perichromatin halo differing from typical apoptotic nuclei. With regards to the characteristics of autophagic-programmed cell death, most relevant was the delay in the collapse of many nuclei.  相似文献

A new approach to the problem of investigation of charge and energy spectra of ultra heavy Galactic cosmic ray nuclei, based on fossil track study of extraterrestrial olivine crystals has been developed. The results of an investigation of ultra heavy Galactic cosmic ray nuclei (Z=50-92) in meteoritic olivine crystals are presented. The technique was based on calibration of olivine crystals with accelerated Xe, Au, Pb and U ions and well-controlled partial annealing of "fresh" and "fossil" tracks. It allows us to determine the charge spectra and abundances of cosmic ray nuclei based on fossil track length study in meteoritic and Moon crystals. The comparative studies of the spectra of "fossil' tracks and tracks due to 208Pb and 238U nuclei have shown that the group of 210 micrometers "fossil" tracks, first observed in 1980 at JINR is due to Th-U nuclei-products of recent r-process nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy. The method in principle allows one to resolve Pt-Pb peaks in fossil tracks, to establish the upper limit of the abundance of Z>110 nuclei in the Galactic cosmic rays at the level < or = 10(-3) to the abundance of actinide nuclei and to get information on the history of Z>50 cosmic ray nuclei in time interval up to 220 M.Y.  相似文献

The vibrational and rotational motions in even nuclei are considered. A microscopic study of these motions leads to a relation between the vibrational motion in spherical nuclei and the rotational motion in deformed nuclei. Nuclei with like nucleons in the same shell are considered. The quadrupole two-body interactions are used in the large singlej-shell of even nuclei. The energies and transition operators of nuclei in the nuclear rotational region are calculated using this microscopic method. Quadrupole moments are also calculated. These calculations are compared with the rotational model of the aligned coupling scheme. The present calculations are in good agreement with previous calculations.  相似文献

In this study, the possible effect of the neutron-proton pairing interaction in the heavy nuclei has been investigated in the framework of the BCS model by making a simple approximation. This effect has been searched realistically by calculating the moments of inertia of deformed even-even nuclei. Calculations show that the moments of inertia of rare earth nuclei changed dramatically and approached the experimental values.  相似文献

Experimental single-particle proton energies in spherical and nearly spherical 20 ? Z ? 28 medium-mass nuclei and their counterparts evaluated with the aid of data formirror nuclei were analyzed on the basis of the dispersive optical model. The parameters of the dispersive optical potential were extrapolated to the region of unstable nuclei, and the values obtained in this way were then used to predict the single-particle proton energies in the 20 ? N ? 50 nuclei under study. The evolution of the particle-hole energy gap was traced, and features peculiar to single-particle spectra of magic and nonmagic nuclei were revealed by comparing single-particle energies with proton-separation energies.  相似文献

The results of a computer simulation study of K? capture in emulsion nuclei are used to reappraise experimental data pertaining to the question of existence of a ‘neutron halo’ on the surface of heavy nuclei. Our results indicate that the conclusion of the experimental study that there is an excess of neutrons on the surface of heavy nuclei is substantially correct though the neutron-to-proton ratio may be lower (~ 3) than its initially estimated value (~ 5).  相似文献

The study of cluster structures in light nuclei is extending to the heavy nuclei in these years. As for the stable N = Z nuclei, from the lighter 8Be, 12C nuclei to the heavier 20Ne and even the 40Ca and 44Ti medium nuclei, the α cluster structures have been well studied and confirmed. In heavy nuclei, due to the dominated mean field, the existence of α cluster structure is not clear as light nuclei but some clues were found for indicating the core+α cluster structure in some nuclei, in particular, the 208Pb+α structure in 212Po. We review some recent progress about the theoretical and experimental explorations of the α-clustering effects in heavy nuclei. We also discuss the possible α cluster structure of heavy nuclei from the view of α decay.  相似文献

The thalamus serves as the central relay station for the brain. It processes and relays sensory and motor signals between different subcortical regions and the cerebral cortex and it can be divided into several neuronal clusters referred to as nuclei. Each of these can possibly be subdivided into sub-nuclei. Accurate and reliable identification of thalamic nuclei is important for surgical interventions and neuroanatomical studies. This is however a challenging task because the small size of the nuclei and the lack of contrast over the thalamus region in clinically acquired images does not permit the visualization of their boundaries. A number of methods have been developed for thalamus parcellation but the vast majority of these relies on diffusion imaging or functional imaging. The low resolution of these images only permit localizing the largest nuclei. In this work we propose a method to segment smaller nuclei. We first present a protocol to build histological-like atlases from a series of high-field (7 Tesla) MR images acquired with different pulse sequences that each permits to visualize the boundaries of a subset of the nuclei. We use this protocol to scan 9 subjects and we manually delineate 23 thalamic nuclei following the Morel atlas naming convention for each of these subjects. Manual contours for the nuclei are subsequently utilized to create statistical shape models. With these data, we compare four methods for the segmentation of thalamic nuclei in 3 T images we have also acquired for the 9 subjects included in the study: (1) single atlas, (2) multi atlas, (3) statistical shape, and (4) hierarchical statistical shape in which thalamic nuclei are hierarchically fitted to the images, starting from the largest ones. Results of a leave-one-out validation study conducted on the nine image sets we have acquired show that the multi atlas approach improves upon the single atlas approach for most nuclei. Segmentations obtained with the hierarchical statistical shape model yield the highest accuracy, with dice coefficients ranging from 0.53 to 0.90, mean surface errors from 0.27 mm to 0.64 mm, and maximum surface errors from 1.31 mm to 2.52 mm for all nuclei averaged across test cases. This suggests the feasibility of using such approach for localizing thalamic substructures in clinically acquired MR volumes. It may have a direct impact on surgeries such as Deep Brain Stimulation procedures that require the implantation of stimulating electrodes in specific thalamic nuclei.  相似文献

The advent of radioactive nuclear beams (RNBs) has led to a rapid growth in the study of exotic nuclei. Already a number of major discoveries have been made. Examples are halo nuclei, mapping the bounds of nuclear existence, assessing the fragility of magicity, producing special nuclei such as 100Sn and 48Ni, and measuring key reaction rates of astrophysic interest. The growth in this field in the next decade will be enormous. With advanced RNB facilities being planned or under construction, more and more exotic nuclei will become accessible. One of the most interesting opportunities will be the study of the evolution of nuclear structure along extended iso-chains of nuclei. A prime example is Ni, where four magic numbers (20, 28, 40, and 50) and five major shells will be accessible. Structural evolution will be discussed from several standpoints, both theoretical and experimental, with emphasis on methods to obtain a maximum of information on new nuclei from the sparse data that will be available at the extremes of accessible N/Z ratios.  相似文献

The strongly repulsive core of the short-range nucleon-nucleon interaction leads to the existence of high-momentum nucleons in nuclei. Inclusive electron scattering can be used to probe these high-momentum nucleons and study the nature of the corresponding short-range correlations in nuclei. With recent data from Jefferson Lab we have begun to map out the strength of two-nucleon correlations in nuclei, while upcoming experiments should allow us to isolate the presence of multi-nucleon correlations. In addition to their importance in describing nuclear structure, these configurations of correlated nucleons represent high-density ‘droplets’ of hadronic matter. As the density of hadronic matter increases there should be a weakening of quark confinement, similar to the onset of deconfinement expected at extremely high temperatures. While there have been hints of non-hadronic structure in nuclei, future measurements will allow us to directly probe the quark distributions of high-density configurations in nuclei. A modified quark structure in these closely packed nucleons would provide a clear signature of exotic components to the structure of nuclei.  相似文献

Results of temperature-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations for equilibrated hot nuclei are presented, extending to the highest temperatures at which the nuclei remain stable. A subtraction procedure developed earlier for isolating the properties of the nucleus from the nucleus + vapor system is applied. The temperature dependence of various quantities characterizing hot nuclei is investigated. The influence of different effective interactions in the Hartree-Fock equations is examined. Special attention is devoted to the study of the high-temperature stability limit of hot nuclei. This limit in nuclei with the Coulomb interaction artificially switched off (i.e. uncharged nuclei) is shown to correspond to the critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition expected on the basis of hot nuclear matter calculations. In realistic charged nuclei the Coulomb repulsion causes a nucleus to become electrostatically unstable and to fall apart at much lower temperatures than its uncharged partner. The approach to and the temperature of this Coulomb instability are very sensitive to the choice of the nuclear interaction. Studying this instability in compound nuclei with different charge-to-mass ratio provides a sensitive measure of the temperature dependence of the nuclear surface properties as well as of certain features of the nuclear equation of state.  相似文献

A physical program of irradiation of emulsions in beams of relativistic nuclei named the BECQUEREL Project is reviewed. It is destined to study in detail the processes of relativistic fragmentation of light radioactive and stable nuclei. The expected results would make it possible to answer some topical questions concerning the cluster structure of light nuclei. Owing to the best spatial resolution, the nuclear emulsions would enable one to obtain unique and evident results. The most important irradiations will be performed in the secondary beams of He, Be, B, C, and N radioactive nuclei formed on the basis of JINR Nuclotron beams of stable nuclei. We present results on the charged state topology of relativistic fragmentation of the 10B nucleus at low energy-momentum transfers as the first step of the research.  相似文献
