The Chafarinas Islands are a group of volcanic outcrops off the north coast of the African continent. Quaternary deposits and calcrete formations cover most of the islands’ planed surface, mainly on Rey Francisco I Island. Uranium-series ages are presented for a geological section with 18 m of detrital deposits and calcrete layers. Calcretes consist of impure carbonate; the leach/leach (L/L) method was therefore used to obtain 234U/238U and 230Th/234U activity ratios in the pure authigenic carbonate fraction to obtain ages of the samples. Resulting ages range from 14 to 80 ka. Except for one sample at the bottom of the age sequence, with the youngest age, all others have ages that agree with their stratigraphic location. Ages obtained using the L/L method were also compared with the method of Allegre and Condomines (Earth Planet Sci Lett 28:395–406, 1976) and with a more recent method (Ludwig and Paces Geochim Cosmochim Acta 66:487–506, 2002, Sharp et al. Quat Res 59:139–150, 2003, Haase-Schramm et al. Geochim Cosmochim Acta 68:985–1005, 2004). The latter two methods were also used to estimate isotopic composition of the detrital component in the impure carbonate and model a more realistic age for the anomalous sample. Minimal uranium isotope activity ratio differences imply that environmental conditions between 25 and 60 ka remained relatively uniform and that a major change may have occurred ~80 ka ago.  相似文献

Hydroxy-aluminum pillared Na-montmorillonite(OH–Al-MT) was prepared for studying sorption of U(VI) in the existence of soluble calcium (Ca2+), carbonate ion (CO32?) and humic acid. Various characterizations confirm that hydroxy-aluminum was successfully pillared into Na-montmorillonite (Na-MT). The effects of pH, concentration of Ca2+ and CO32? as well as HA on the sorption capacity of Na-MT and OH–Al-MT for U(VI) has been investigated by batch experiments. Additionally, the kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics of adsorption of U(VI) were discussed in detailed. The study indicates that OH–Al-MT can be a potentially promising low-cost adsorbent for removal of U(VI) in wastewaters.  相似文献

Radiochemical separations of carrier-free210Bi and UX1 activities from210Pb and U, respectively, have been carried out using a silica gel column.210Pb was adsorbed in the column as molybdate and210Bi passed unadsorbed. Lead activity was next removed with 25 ml of 0.1 M HNO3. In the case of separation of UX1, the coloured carbonate complex of U was removed from the silica surface by washing with saturated sodium carbonate solution, keeping UX1 retained, and finally UX1 was washed out with 25 ml of conc. HNO3. Studies of the beta decay of210Bi and the γ-spectrum analysis of UX1 has shown that the separated products in both cases are of high radiochemical purity. The processes in each case took less than one hour and the yield was satisfactory.  相似文献

Developing different model age determination methods of uranium sample could get more information on insight into source and suspected use in nuclear forensic investigation. A procedure for the determination of model age of uranium sample using 231Pa/235U radiochronometer was reported. The 233Pa spike used in the procedure of 231Pa–235U model age determination was separated from in-house 237Np stock solution by using two TRU resin columns and three silica gel columns and calibrated by CRM U100. Model ages of CRM U010 and IRMM-1000b were presented. The model age of IRMM-1000b using 231Pa/235U radiochronometer were older than the literature reported results by 230Th/234U radiochronometer by amounts exceeded the expanded uncertainty.

A two step precipitation using ammonium carbonate and oxalic acid as the precipitants for thorium and iron is developed for the purification of 233U. Ammonium carbonate is added to the feed to increase the pH of the solution. The effect of pH on the solubility of U, Th and Fe in an excess of ammonium carbonate is studied. This indicates that the solubility of Th and Fe is minimum at pH 7 and the recovery of uranium is maximum. The effect of the concentration of thorium and iron on the recovery of uranium at pH 7 is studied. This indicates that the ammonium carbonate precipitation tolerates 2 g/l of thorium and 10 g/l of iron keeping losses of uranium to a minimum. If the feed solution contains more than a tolerable concentration of thorium the precipitation is followed in two steps: (1) Bulk of the thorium is removed by oxalate precipitation, (2) the remaining thorium and iron in the supernatant are removed by ammonium carbonate precipitation. A flow sheet is proposed for the purification of 233U from thorium and iron present in a strip product concentrate obtained during the reprocessing of irradiated thorium rods.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to calculate the values of the 234U/238U activity ratio in natural environment (water, sediments, Baltic organisms and marine birds from various regions of the southern Baltic Sea; river waters (the Vistula and the Oder River); plants and soils collected near phosphogypsum waste heap in Wi?linka (Northern Poland) and deer-like animals from Northern Poland. On the basis of the studies it was found that the most important processes of uranium geochemical migration in the southern Baltic Sea ecosystem are the sedimentation of suspended material and the vertical diffusion from the sediments into the bottom water. Considerable values of the 234U/238U are characterized for the Vistula and Oder Rivers and its tributaries. The values of the 234U/238U activity ratio in different tissues and organs of the Baltic organisms, sea birds and wild deer are varied. Such a large variation value of obtained activity ratios indicates different behavior of uranium isotopes in the tissues and organisms of sea birds and wild animals. This value shows that uranium isotopes can be disposed at a slower or faster rate. The values of the 234U/238U activity ratio in the analyzed plants, soils and mosses collected in the vicinity of phosphogypsum dumps in Wi?linka are close to one and indicate the phosphogypsum origin of the analyzed nuclides. Uranium isotopes 234U and 238U are not present in radioactive equilibrium in the aquatic environment, which indicates that their activities are not equal. The inverse relationship is observed in the terrestrial environment, where the value of the of the 234U/238U activity ratio really oscillates around unity.  相似文献

Extraction of U(VI) from HNO3, HCl and HClO4 media using cyanex-272 (bis[2,4,4 trimethyl pentyl] phosphinic acid)/n-dodecane has been carried out. In the case of HNO3 and HClO4 media, the distribution ratio (D) value first decreases and then increases, whereas from HCl medium it first decreases and then remains constant with increase in H+ ion concentration. At lower acidities, U(VI) was extracted as UO2(HA2)2 by an ion exchange mechanism, whereas at higher acidities as UO2(NO3)2 .2(H2A2) following a solvation mechanism. The D for U(VI) by cyanex-272, PC-88A and DEHPA at low acidities follows the order cyanex-272 > PC-88A > DEHPA. Also, cyanex-272 was found to extract U(VI) more efficiently than TBP at 2M HNO3. The effect of diluents on the extraction of U(VI) by cyanex-272 followed the order cyclohexane > n-dodecane > CCl4 > benzene. The loading of U(VI) into cyanex-272/n-dodecane from 2M HNO3 has shown that at saturation point, cyanex-272 was 78% loaded. No third phase was observed at the saturation level. The stripping of U(VI) from the loaded organic phase was not possible with water, it was poor with acetic acid and sodium acetate but quantitative with oxalic acid, ammonium carbonate and sodium carbonate.  相似文献

Uranium concentration and the 234U/238U activity ratio have been measured for the Tatsunokuchi hot spring waters of Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan, collected periodically over a long period (1977-2000). The concentration of 238U varied drastically between 0.045 and 1.02 mBq/l (a factor of about 20), while the 234U concentration was almost unchanged, ranging from 2.30 to 3.07 mBq/l. Resultant 234U/238U activity ratios showed a wide range from 2.7 to 51. Equilibrium calculation by using the geochemical code showed that U for one end-member representing low uranium contents and very high 234U/238U ratios was expected to exist as UO2(CO3)2 2-. By using the U isotopic and 14C dating methods, the age of this water was roughly estimated to be in the range of 104-105 years.  相似文献

The new so-called Quad-IRM (“Quadruple Isotope Reference Material”) was prepared from highly enriched 233U, 235U, 236U and 238U isotopic materials using an optimized combination of gravimetrical mixing and mass spectrometry. Within the mixing process the isotope ratios were adjusted to about n(233U)/n(235U)/n(236U)/n(238U) = 1/1/1/1 and certified with expanded relative uncertainties of 0.0054% per mass unit (coverage factor k = 2). This new isotope reference material is ideal for verifying the inter-calibration of multi-detector systems in isotope mass spectrometry.The certified n(233U)/n(236U) ratio of IRMM-3100a was derived from the mass metrology data of the gravimetrical mixing of highly enriched 233U and 236U materials. It was verified by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) measurements using the classical total evaporation (TE) and modified total evaporation (MTE) methods. The n(234U)/n(236U), n(235U)/n(236U) and n(238U)/n(236U) ratios were then determined by TIMS using the n(233U)/n(236U) ratio for internal normalization and using a multi-dynamic measurement procedure in order to circumvent any possible influence and uncertainties from Faraday cup efficiencies and amplifier gain factors. The certified n(235U)/n(236U) and n(238U)/n(236U) ratios were additionally verified using the classical and modified total evaporation methods using two TIMS instruments at IRMM and one TIMS instrument at IAEA-SGAS. The verification data can be regarded as results obtained at three independent instruments at two different nuclear safeguards laboratories.  相似文献

The uranium concentration and the234U/238U,235U/238U activity ratios were studied in water samples from Jucar River, using low-level -spectrometry. The effects of pH, temperature and salinity were considered and more detailed sampling was done in the neighbourhood of Cofrentes Nuclear Plant (Valencia, Spain). Changes were observed in the uranium concentration with the salinity and the234U/238U activity ratio was found to vary with pH. Leaching and dilution, which depend on pH and salinity, are the probable mechanisms for these changes in the concentration of uranium and the activity ratios.  相似文献

Modified Sorrel’s cement was prepared by the addition of ferric chloride. The modified cement (MF5) was analyzed and characterized by different methods. Adsorption of Gd(III) and U(VI) ions in carbonate solution has been studied separately as a function of pH, contact time, adsorbent weight, carbonate concentration, concentration of Gd(III) and U(VI) and temperature. From equilibrium data obtained, the values of Δ H, Δ S and Δ G were found to equal −30.9 kJ ⋅ mol−1, −85.4 J ⋅ mol−1 ⋅,K−1, and −5.4 KJ ⋅ mol−1, respectively, for Gd(III) and 18.9 kJ ⋅ mol−1, 67.8 J ⋅ mol−1 K−1 and −1.3 KJ ⋅ mol−1, respectively, for U(VI). The equilibrium data obtained have been found to fit both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The batch kinetic of Gd(III) and U(VI) on modified Sorrel’s cement (MF5) with the thermodynamic parameters from carbonate solution were studied to explain the mechanistic aspects of the adsorption process. Several kinetic models were used to test the experimental rate data and to examine the controlling mechanism of the adsorption process. Various parameters such as effective diffusion coefficient and activation energy of activation were evaluated. The adsorption of Gd(III) and U(VI) on the MF5 adsorbent follows first-order reversible kinetics. The forward and backward constants for adsorption, k 1and k 2 have been calculated at different temperatures between 10 and 60C. Form kinetic study, the values of Δ H * and Δ S * were calculated for Gd(III) and U(VI) at 25C. It is found that Δ H * equals −14.8 kJmol−1 and 7.2 kJmol−1 for Gd(III) and U(VI), respectively, while Δ S * were found equal −95.7 Jmol−1K−1 and −70.5 Jmol−1K−1 for Gd(III) and U(VI), respectively. The study showed that the pore diffusion is the rate limiting for Gd(III) and (VI).  相似文献

238U, 234U and 210Po activity concentrations were determined in beer in Poland by alpha-spectrometry with low-level activity silicon detectors. The results revealed that the mean concentrations of 238U, 234U and 210Po in the analyzed beer samples were 4.63, 4.11 and 4.94 mBq·dm−3, respectively, the highest in Tyskie (5.71 for 210Po, 5.06 for 234U and 6.11 for 238U) and the lowest in Lech (2.49 for 210Po). The effective radiation dose due to uranium and polonium ingestions by beer was calculated and were compared to the effective radiation dose from drinking water. A method is developed for the selective leaching of 233U from a thorium oxalate cake. The leaching capacity of ammonium carbonate and nitric acid have been investigated, showing that (NH4)2CO3 leads to higher recovery. The maximum leaching efficiency is obtained using 0.5% ammonium carbonate, with a minimal thorium pick-up. A uranium recovery of 94% is obtained after three consecutive contact experiments in carbonate media, with minimal thorium uptake in the leachate. This process was applied to an actual plant stream, allowing the reduction of the 233U -activity from 5.64 to 0.3 Ci/g of thorium oxalate cake.  相似文献

The distribution of226Ra and238U in various soils has been studied. Supposing that radioactive equilibrium were in existence, the average activities of226Ra and238U would show a nearly 11 correlation. As weathering affects radioactive equilibrium in surface soil, radioactive equilibrium was not in existence. Therefore, four kinds of soil were selected from different weathering conditions, viz. river bed soil, paddy field soil, field soil and uncropped soil. The226Ra/238U ratio of various soils lies in the range of 1.63 to 2.41. The activity concentrations of226Ra were greater than238U in various soils. The ratio226Ra/238U can be shown to be a quantitative index of weathering. Phosphatic manure contains238U and its daughter isotopes in concentrations far exceeding the average abundance in the earth's crust. But the cultivated soils (paddy field soil, field soil) are not affected by fertilizers in Kamisaibara.  相似文献

Gross α and gross β activities and 238U concentrations were determined in 18 surface water samples collected from Van Lake. The instrumentations used to count the gross α and gross β activities and to determine the 238U concentrations were α/β counter of the multi-detector low background system (PIC-MPC-9604) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (Thermo Scientific Element 2), respectively. Concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.021 Bq L−1 and from 0.111 to 2.794 Bq L−1 were observed for the gross α and β activities in surface waters, respectively. For all samples the gross β activities were higher than the corresponding gross α activities. The results indicated that the gross α radioactive contamination in water samples was lower than recommended values for the guideline of drinking waters and most of the gross β activities in water samples were higher than those in the same procedure. The 238U concentrations ranged from 74.49 to 113.2 μg L−1 in surface waters. The obtained results have showed that 238U concentrations are higher than guideline values for uranium.  相似文献

The feasibility of ICP-ion source mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the determination of232Th and238U in bone ash was studied. Bone ash samples were further decomposed with concentrated nitric acid under pressure in PTF crucibles. The resultant solution was diluted and subjected directly to the measurement with an ICP mass spectrometer. The effects of diluting and removing matrix elements on ICP-MS measurements of these nuclides were studied. The accuracy of the determinations was evaluated with the measurement of NBS Human Lung (SRM 4351) which was originally certified for alpha activities of232Th and238U.  相似文献

High activities of radium were observed in the spring waters of Tuwa in Panchamahal district of Gujarat state. These determinations have led to further studies on geochemical behaviour of uranium in the surface sediments of this region. Labile uranium from the surface of the sediment particles is leached with saturated solution of ammonium carbonate. Uranium is chemically separated from the leachates by cellulose column chromatography. Unusually high activity ratios of234U/238U in the range of 2.3 to 2.77 were observed on the surface of the particles. The core of the particles exhibited a ratio of 1.00 indicating soluble234U fraction has migrated.  相似文献

The 234U/238U isotope ratio has been widely used as a tracer for geochemical processes in underground aquifers. Quadrupole-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) equipped with a high-efficiency nebulizer and a membrane desolvator was employed for the determination of 234U/238U isotope ratios in natural water samples. The instrumental limit of detection for 234U was at the low pg L−1 level with very low sample consumption. Measurement precision (234U/238U) was 3–5% for bottled mineral water with elevated uranium concentration (>1 μg L−1). For the analysis of groundwater samples from the Almonte-Marisma underground aquifer (Huelva, Spain), uranium was stripped from stainless steel planchets that had previously been used as radiometric counting sources for alpha-particle spectrometry. Potential spectral interferences from other metals introduced during the dissolution were investigated. Matrix-matched blank solutions were needed to subtract the background on 234U due to the formation of platinum argides, and to allow for mass bias correction and background correction. The Pt appears to be an impurity present in the stainless steel, either as a minor component by itself or after extraction from the anode and a subsequent uranium electrodeposition. The 234U/238U isotope ratio data were in very good agreement with those of alpha spectrometry, while precision was improved by a factor of up to 10 and counting time was reduced down to ~20 min (10 replicate measurements).  相似文献

Activity concentrations of 234U, 238U and 226Ra in mineral waters were determined on the basis of nine water bottling facilities using alpha particle spectrometry. The mineral water samples were collected from three geographic regions of Turkey. The radiochemical separation used in the uranium analysis is based on the isolation of uranium radioisotopes from other radionuclides such as Th, Am, Pu and Np using UTEVA resin. Alpha sources were prepared using electrodeposition method. The activity concentration of 226Ra was determined after deposition on a membrane using BaSO4 co-precipitation method. The activity concentrations (mBq L?1) of 226Ra, 238U and 234U ranged from <0.56 to 165, from <0.42 to 439 and from <0.42 to 464, respectively. The measured activity concentrations were used for the calculation of the average total annual effective ingestion doses for children and adults. The committed effective doses were calculated for three different scenarios according to mineral water consumption rate. In the most extreme scenario (for age group 12–17), all water samples except MW1 and MW2 cause annual committed effective doses below the reference level (0.1 mSv year?1) recommended by World Health Organization (WHO).  相似文献

Summary Conditional stability constants have been determined for U(IV) and U(VI) Boom Clay humic acid (BCHA) and Aldrich humic acid (AHA) complexes, under anaerobic and carbonate free conditions. The constants are needed for nuclear waste repository performance assessment purposes. The U(IV) constants were obtained by developing an approach based on the solubility product of amorphous U(OH)4. The U(VI) constants were obtained by applying the Schubert ion-exchange approach.  相似文献
