This paper deals with fast and reliable numerical solution methods for the incompressible non-Newtonian Navier-Stokes equations. To handle the nonlinearity of the governing equations, the Picard and Newton methods are used to linearize these coupled partial differential equations. For space discretization we use the finite element method and utilize the two-by-two block structure of the matrices in the arising algebraic systems of equations. The Krylov subspace iterative methods are chosen to solve the linearized discrete systems and the development of computationally and numerically efficient preconditioners for the two-by-two block matrices is the main concern in this paper. In non-Newtonian flows, the viscosity is not constant and its variation is an important factor that affects the performance of some already known preconditioning techniques. In this paper we examine the performance of several preconditioners for variable viscosity applications, and improve them further to be robust with respect to variations in viscosity.  相似文献

In this work we analyse a method to construct numerically efficient and computationally cheap sparse approximations of some of the matrix blocks arising in the block-factorized preconditioners for matrices with a two-by-two block structure. The matrices arise from finite element discretizations of partial differential equations. We consider scalar elliptic problems, however the approach is appropriate also for other types of problems such as parabolic problems or systems of equations. The technique is applicable for both selfadjoint and non-selfadjoint problems, in two as well as in three space dimensions. We analyse in detail the two-dimensional case and provide extensive numerical evidence for the efficiency of the proposed matrix approximations, both serial and parallel. Two- and three-dimensional tests are included.  相似文献

Preconditioners based on various multilevel extensions of two‐level finite element methods (FEM) lead to iterative methods which have an optimal order computational complexity with respect to the size of the system. Such methods were first presented in Axelsson and Padiy (SIAM. J. Sci. Stat. Comp. 1990; 20 :1807) and Axelsson and Vassilevski (Numer. Math. 1989; 56 :157), and are based on (recursive) two‐level splittings of the finite element space. The key role in the derivation of optimal convergence rate estimates is played by the constant γ in the so‐called Cauchy–Bunyakowski–Schwarz (CBS) inequality, associated with the angle between the two subspaces of the splitting. It turns out that only existence of uniform estimates for this constant is not enough but accurate quantitative bounds for γ have to be found as well. More precisely, the value of the upper bound for γ∈(0,1) is part of the construction of various multilevel extensions of the related two‐level methods. In this paper, an algebraic two‐level preconditioning algorithm for second‐order elliptic boundary value problems is constructed, where the discretization is done using Crouzeix–Raviart non‐conforming linear finite elements on triangles. An important point to make is that in this case the finite element spaces corresponding to two successive levels of mesh refinements are not nested. To handle this, a proper two‐level basis is considered, which enables us to fit the general framework for the construction of two‐level preconditioners for conforming finite elements and to generalize the method to the multilevel case. The major contribution of this paper is the derived estimates of the related constant γ in the strengthened CBS inequality. These estimates are uniform with respect to both coefficient and mesh anisotropy. To our knowledge, the results presented in the paper are the first such estimates for non‐conforming FEM systems.

We consider the iterative solution of optimal control problems constrained by the time-harmonic parabolic equations. Due to the time-harmonic property of the control equations, a suitable discretization of the corresponding optimality systems leads to a large complex linear system with special two-by-two block matrix of saddle point form. For this algebraic system, an efficient preconditioner is constructed, which results in a fast Krylov subspace solver, that is robust with respect to the mesh size, frequency, and regularization parameters. Furthermore, the implementation is straightforward and the computational complexity is of optimal order, linear in the number of degrees of freedom. We show that the eigenvalue distribution of the corresponding preconditioned matrix leads to a condition number bounded above by 2. Numerical experiments confirming the theoretical derivations are presented, including comparisons with some other existing preconditioners.  相似文献

The electrical activity in the heart is governed by the bidomain equations. In this paper, we analyse an order optimal method for the algebraic equations arising from the discretization of this model. Our scheme is defined in terms of block Jacobi or block symmetric Gauss–Seidel preconditioners. Furthermore, each block in these methods is based on standard preconditioners for scalar elliptic or parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Such preconditioners can be realized in terms of multigrid or domain decomposition schemes, and are thus readily available by applying ‘off‐the‐shelves’ software. Finally, our theoretical findings are illuminated by a series of numerical experiments. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The finite volume element method is a discretization technique for partial differential equations, but in general case the coefficient matrix of its linear system is not symmetric, even for the self-adjoint continuous problem. In this paper we develop a kind of symmetric modified finite volume element methods both for general self-adjoint elliptic and for parabolic problems on general discretization, their coefficient matrix are symmetric. We give the optimal order energy norm error estimates. We also prove that the difference between the solutions of the finite volume element method and symmetric modified finite volume element method is a high order term.  相似文献

Based on the special positive semidefinite splittings of the saddle point matrix, we propose a new alternating positive semidefinite splitting (APSS) iteration method for the saddle point problem arising from the finite element discretization of the hybrid formulation of the time-harmonic eddy current problem. We prove that the new APSS iteration method is unconditionally convergent for both cases of the simple topology and the general topology. The new APSS matrix can be used as a preconditioner to accelerate the convergence rate of Krylov subspace methods. Numerical results show that the new APSS preconditioner is superior to the existing preconditioners.  相似文献

For a class of block two-by-two systems of linear equations with certain skew-Hamiltonian coefficient matrices, we construct additive block diagonal preconditioning matrices and discuss the eigen-properties of the corresponding preconditioned matrices. The additive block diagonal preconditioners can be employed to accelerate the convergence rates of Krylov subspace iteration methods such as MINRES and GMRES. Numerical experiments show that MINRES preconditioned by the exact and the inexact additive block diagonal preconditioners are effective, robust and scalable solvers for the block two-by-two linear systems arising from the Galerkin finite-element discretizations of a class of distributed control problems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a stabilized space-time finite element method for solving linear parabolic evolution problems is analyzed. The proposed method is developed on a base of a space-time variational setting, that helps on the simultaneous and unified discretization in space and in time by finite element techniques. Stabilization terms are constructed by means of classical bubble spaces. Stability of the discrete problem with respect to an associated mesh dependent norm is proved, and a priori discretization error estimates are presented. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical estimates.  相似文献

In this article, we consider a class of unfitted finite element methods for scalar elliptic problems. These so-called CutFEM methods use standard finite element spaces on a fixed unfitted triangulation combined with the Nitsche technique and a ghost penalty stabilization. As a model problem we consider the application of such a method to the Poisson interface problem. We introduce and analyze a new class of preconditioners that is based on a subspace decomposition approach. The unfitted finite element space is split into two subspaces, where one subspace is the standard finite element space associated to the background mesh and the second subspace is spanned by all cut basis functions corresponding to nodes on the cut elements. We will show that this splitting is stable, uniformly in the discretization parameter and in the location of the interface in the triangulation. Based on this we introduce an efficient preconditioner that is uniformly spectrally equivalent to the stiffness matrix. Using a similar splitting, it is shown that the same preconditioning approach can also be applied to a fictitious domain CutFEM discretization of the Poisson equation. Results of numerical experiments are included that illustrate optimality of such preconditioners for the Poisson interface problem and the Poisson fictitious domain problem.  相似文献

The goal of this work is to derive and justify a multilevel preconditioner of optimal arithmetic complexity for symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element approximations of second order elliptic problems. Our approach is based on the following simple idea given in [R.D. Lazarov, P.S. Vassilevski, L.T. Zikatanov, Multilevel preconditioning of second order elliptic discontinuous Galerkin problems, Preprint, 2005]. The finite element space of piece-wise polynomials, discontinuous on the partition , is projected onto the space of piece-wise constant functions on the same partition that constitutes the largest space in the multilevel method. The discontinuous Galerkin finite element system on this space is associated to the so-called “graph-Laplacian”. In 2-D this is a sparse M-matrix with -1 as off diagonal entries and nonnegative row sums. Under the assumption that the finest partition is a result of multilevel refinement of a given coarse mesh, we develop the concept of hierarchical splitting of the unknowns. Then using local analysis we derive estimates for the constants in the strengthened Cauchy–Bunyakowski–Schwarz (CBS) inequality, which are uniform with respect to the levels. This measure of the angle between the spaces of the splitting was used by Axelsson and Vassilevski in [Algebraic multilevel preconditioning methods II, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 27 (1990) 1569–1590] to construct an algebraic multilevel iteration (AMLI) for finite element systems. The main contribution in this paper is a construction of a splitting that produces new estimates for the CBS constant for graph-Laplacian. As a result we have a preconditioner for the system of the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method of optimal arithmetic complexity.  相似文献

There exist two main versions of preconditioners of algebraic multilevel type, the additive and the multiplicative methods. They correspond to preconditioners in block diagonal and block matrix factorized form, respectively. Both can be defined and analysed as recursive two-by-two block methods. Although the analytical framework for such methods is simple, for many finite element approximations it still permits the derivation of the strongest results, such as optimal, or nearly optimal, rate of convergence and optimal, or nearly optimal order of computational complexity, when proper recursive global orderings of node points have been used or when they are applied for hierarchical basis function finite element methods for elliptic self-adjoint equations and stabilized in a certain way. This holds for general elliptic problems of second order, independent of the regularity of the problem, including independence of discontinuities of coefficients between elements and of anisotropy. Important ingredients in the methods are a proper balance of the size of the coarse mesh to the finest mesh and a proper solver on the coarse mesh. This paper presents in a survey form the basic results of such methods and considers in particular additive methods. This method has excellent parallelization properties. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary We present an a posteriori error estimator for the non-conforming Crouzeix-Raviart discretization of the Stokes equations which is based on the local evaluation of residuals with respect to the strong form of the differential equation. The error estimator yields global upper and local lower bounds for the error of the finite element solution. It can easily be generalized to the stationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and to other non-conforming finite element methods. Numerical examples show the efficiency of the proposed error estimator.  相似文献

For the large sparse block two-by-two real nonsingular matrices, we establish a general framework of practical and efficient structured preconditioners through matrix transformation and matrix approximations. For the specific versions such as modified block Jacobi-type, modified block Gauss-Seidel-type, and modified block unsymmetric (symmetric) Gauss-Seidel-type preconditioners, we precisely describe their concrete expressions and deliberately analyze eigenvalue distributions and positive definiteness of the preconditioned matrices. Also, we show that when these structured preconditioners are employed to precondition the Krylov subspace methods such as GMRES and restarted GMRES, fast and effective iteration solvers can be obtained for the large sparse systems of linear equations with block two-by-two coefficient matrices. In particular, these structured preconditioners can lead to efficient and high-quality preconditioning matrices for some typical matrices from the real-world applications.

Recently, Bai et al. (2013) proposed an effective and efficient matrix splitting iterative method, called preconditioned modified Hermitian/skew-Hermitian splitting (PMHSS) iteration method, for two-by-two block linear systems of equations. The eigenvalue distribution of the iterative matrix suggests that the splitting matrix could be advantageously used as a preconditioner. In this study, the CGNR method is utilized for solving the PMHSS preconditioned linear systems, and the performance of the method is considered by estimating the condition number of the normal equations. Furthermore, the proposed method is compared with other PMHSS preconditioned Krylov subspace methods by solving linear systems arising in complex partial differential equations and a distributed control problem. The numerical results demonstrate the difference in the performance of the methods under consideration.  相似文献

We study the superconvergence property of fully discrete finite element approximation for quadratic optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations with control constraints. The time discretization is based on difference methods, whereas the space discretization is done using finite element methods. The state and the adjoint state are approximated by piecewise linear functions and the control is approximated by piecewise constant functions. First, we define a fully discrete finite element approximation scheme for the semilinear parabolic control problem. Second, we derive the superconvergence properties for the control, the state and the adjoint state. Finally, we do some numerical experiments for illustrating our theoretical results.  相似文献

The solution of systems of equations arising from systems of time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) is considered. Primarily, first-order PDEs are studied, but second-order derivatives are also accounted for. The discretization is performed using a general finite difference stencil in space and an implicit method in time. The systems of equations are solved by a preconditioned Krylov subspace method. The preconditioners exploit optimal and superoptimal approximations by low-degree polynomials in a normal basis matrix, associated with a fast trigonometric transform. Numerical experiments for high-order accurate discretizations are presented. The results show that preconditioners based on fast transforms yield efficient solution algorithms, even for large quotients between the time and space steps. Utilizing a spatial grid ratio less than one, the arithmetic work per grid point is bounded by a constant as the number of grid points increases.
