Summary Brown introducedk-step methods usingl derivatives. We investigate for whichk andl the methods are stable or unstable. It is seen that to anyl the method becomes unstable fork large enough. All methods withk2(l+1) are stable. Fork=1,2,..., 18 there exists a k such that the methods are stable for anyl k and unstable for anyl < k . The k are given.

We study the limiting behavior of the weighted central paths{(x(), s())} > 0 in linear programming at both = 0 and = . We establish the existence of a partition (B ,N ) of the index set { 1, ,n } such thatx i() ands j () as fori B , andj N , andx N (),s B () converge to weighted analytic centers of certain polytopes. For allk 1, we show that thekth order derivativesx (k) () ands (k) () converge when 0 and . Consequently, the derivatives of each order are bounded in the interval (0, ). We calculate the limiting derivatives explicitly, and establish the surprising result that all higher order derivatives (k 2) converge to zero when .

Summary We study integral functionals of the formF(u, )= f(u)dx, defined foru C1(;R k), R n . The functionf is assumed to be polyconvex and to satisfy the inequalityf(A) c0¦(A)¦ for a suitable constant c0 > 0, where (A) is then-vector whose components are the determinants of all minors of thek×n matrixA. We prove thatF is lower semicontinuous onC 1(;R k) with respect to the strong topology ofL 1(;R k). Then we consider the relaxed functional , defined as the greatest lower semicontinuous functional onL 1(;R k ) which is less than or equal toF on C1(;R k). For everyu BV(;R k) we prove that (u,) f(u)dx+c0¦Dsu¦(), whereDu=u dx+Dsu is the Lebesgue decomposition of the Radon measureDu. Moreover, under suitable growth conditions onf, we show that (u,)= f(u)dx for everyu W1,p(;R k), withp min{n,k}. We prove also that the functional (u, ) can not be represented by an inte- gral for an arbitrary functionu BVloc(R n;R k). In fact, two examples show that, in general, the set function (u, ) is not subadditive whenu BVloc(R n;R k), even ifu W loc 1,p (R n;R k) for everyp < min{n,k}. Finally, we examine in detail the properties of the functionsu BV(;R k) such that (u, )= f(u)dx, particularly in the model casef(A)=¦(A)¦.

LetP be a finite classical polar space of rankr, withr 2. A partialm-systemM ofP, with 0 m r - 1, is any set (1), 2,..., k ofk ( 0) totally singularm-spaces ofP such that no maximal totally singular space containing i has a point in common with (1 2 ... k) — i,i = 1, 2,...,k. In a previous paper an upper bound for ¦M¦ was obtained (Theorem 1). If ¦M¦ = , thenM is called anm-system ofP. Form = 0 them-systems are the ovoids ofP; form =r - 1 them-systems are the spreads ofP. In this paper we improve in many cases the upper bound for the number of elements of a partialm-system, thus proving the nonexistence of several classes ofm-systems.Dedicated to Hanfried Lenz on the occasion of his 80th birthday

Summary Let k and l be integers such that 2k l. Let Sk and S l lbe two subsets of positive integers with SkQk and Sl Ql, where Qk denotes the set of k-free integers. Further suppose that the characteristic functions of Sk and S l l are multiplicative. Let T(n) denote the number of representations of n in the form n=a+b, where a Sk and b S l l. In this paper we establish an asymptotic formula for T(n), when n is sufficiently large; and deduce several known asymptotic formulae as particular cases.

Letk be a field and an abstract simplicial complex with vertex set . In this article we study the structure of the Ext modules Ext a i (A/m (l ,k[]) of the Stanley-Reisner ringk[] whereA=k[x 1,...,x n ] andm l =(x l 1 ,...,x l n ). Using this structure theorem we give a characterization of Buchsbaumness ofk[] by means of the length of the modules Ext A i (A/m l ,k[]). That isk[] is Buchsbaum if and only if for allik[], the length of the modules Ext A i (A/m l ,k[]) is independent ofl.

Let m= (1,..., m) denote an ordered field, where i+1>0 is infinitesimal relative to the elements of i, 0 < –i < m (by definition, 0= ). Given a system of inequalities f1 > 0, ..., fs > 0, fs+1 0, ..., fk 0, where fj m [X1,..., Xn] are polynomials such that, and the absolute value of any integer occurring in the coefficients of the fjs is at most 2M. An algorithm is constructed which tests the above system of inequalities for solvability over the real closure of m in polynomial time with respect to M, ((d)nd0)n+m. In the case m=, the algorithm explicitly constructs a family of real solutions of the system (provided the latter is consistent). Previously known algorithms for this problem had complexity of the order ofM(d d 0 m 2U(n) .Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Maternaticheskogo Instituta im. V. A. For a Rees matrix semigroupS with normalized sandwich matrix and C(S), the congruence lattice ofS, we consider the lattice generated by {itpTl, pK, pTr, ptl, pk, ptr}. HerepT 1 andpt l are the upper and lower ends of the interval which makes up the i -class of , i being the left trace relation onC(S). The remaining symbols have the analogous meaning relative to the kernel and the right trace relations. We also consider the lattice generated by {T l, K, Tr, tl, k, tr} where and are the equality and the universal relations onS, respectively. In both cases, we find lattices freest relative to these lattices and represent them as distributive lattices with generators and relations.

Let G be a locally compact -compact group with right Haar measure m and a regular probability measure on G. We say that is weakly mixing if for all gL (G) and all fL 1(G) with fdm=0 we have n –1 n k=1| k *f,g|0. We show that is weakly mixing if and only if is ergodic and strictly aperiodic. To prove this we use and prove some results about unimodular eigenvalues for general Markov operators.

C. Hightower found two infinite sequences of gaps in the Markov spectrum, ( n , n ) and ( n , n ) with n and n both Markov elements, converging to . This paper exhibits Markov elements n * and n * such that, for alln 1, ( n * , n ) and ( n n * ) are gaps in the Markov spectrum. Other results include showing that, for alln 1, n is completely isolated, while the other endpoints of the gaps are limit points in the Markov spectrum.

In this paper we study the curves of a surface ( T -lines) which are base curves of ruled surfaces for which the parameter of distribution O has a constant value. Moreover we assume that the ruled surfaces belong to a given congruenceT of surface tangents of . Relations are established between the T -lines and other curves of (asymptotic lines, lines of curvature, k T -lines). The T -lines are used to characterize the pseudospheres and the helicoids. The T -lines of the surfaces of revolution are determined if the congruenceT consists of the tangents of the circles of latitude.

Let G denote a semisimple group, a discrete subgroup, B=G/P the Poisson boundary. Regarding invariants of discrete subgroups we prove, in particular, the following:(1) For any -quasi-invariant measure on B, and any probablity measure on , the norm of the operator () on L 2(B,) is equal to (), where is the unitary representation in L 2(X,), and is the regular representation of .(2) In particular this estimate holds when is Lebesgue measure on B, a Patterson–Sullivan measure, or a -stationary measure, and implies explicit lower bounds for the displacement and Margulis number of (w.r.t. a finite generating set), the dimension of the conformal density, the -entropy of the measure, and Lyapunov exponents of .(3) In particular, when G=PSL2() and is free, the new lower bound of the displacement is somewhat smaller than the Culler–Shalen bound (which requires an additional assumption) and is greater than the standard ball-packing bound. We also prove that ()=G() for any amenable action of G and L 1(G), and conversely, give a spectral criterion for amenability of an action of G under certain natural dynamical conditions. In addition, we establish a uniform lower bound for the -entropy of any measure quasi-invariant under the action of a group with property T, and use this fact to construct an interesting class of actions of such groups, related to 'virtual' maximal parabolic subgroups. Most of the results hold in fact in greater generality, and apply for instance when G is any semi-simple algebraic group, or when is any word-hyperbolic group, acting on their Poisson boundary, for example.

The projected gradient methods treated here generate iterates by the rulex k+1=P (x k s k F(x k )),x 1 , where is a closed convex set in a real Hilbert spaceX,s k is a positive real number determined by a Goldstein-Bertsekas condition,P projectsX into ,F is a differentiable function whose minimum is sought in , and F is locally Lipschitz continuous. Asymptotic stability and convergence rate theorems are proved for singular local minimizers in the interior of , or more generally, in some open facet in . The stability theorem requires that: (i) is a proper local minimizer andF grows uniformly in near ; (ii) –F() lies in the relative interior of the coneK of outer normals to at ; and (iii) is an isolated critical point and the defect P (xF(x)) –x grows uniformly within the facet containing . The convergence rate theorem imposes (i) and (ii), and also requires that: (iv)F isC 4 near and grows no slower than x4 within the facet; and (v) the projected Hessian operatorP F 2 F()F is positive definite on its range in the subspaceF orthogonal toK . Under these conditions, {x k } converges to from nearby starting pointsx 1, withF(x k ) –F() =O(k –2) and x k – =O(k –1/2). No explicit or implied local pseudoconvexity or level set compactness demands are imposed onF in this analysis. Furthermore, condition (v) and the uniform growth stipulations in (i) and (iii) are redundant in n .

An abelian topological group is an group if and only if it is a locally -compactk-space and every compact subset in it is contained in a compactly generated locally compact subgroup. Every abelian groupG is topologically isomorphic to G 0 where 0 andG 0 is an abelian group where every compact subset is contained in a compact subgroup. Intrinsic definitions of measures, convolution of measures, measure algebra,L 1-algebra, Fourier transforms of abelian groups are given and their properties are studied.
