In this research, the fluid and thermal characteristics of a rectangular turbulent jet flow is studied numerically. The results of three-dimensional jet issued from a rectangular nozzle are presented. A numerical method employing control volume approach with collocated grid arrangement was employed. Velocity and pressure fields are coupled with SIMPLEC algorithm. The turbulent stresses are approximated using k–e{\varepsilon} model with two different inlet conditions. The velocity and temperature fields are presented and the rates of their decay at the jet centerline are noted. The velocity vectors of the main flow and the secondary flow are illustrated. Also, effect of aspect ratio on mixing in rectangular cross-section jets is considered. The aspect ratios that were considered for this work were 1:1 to 1:4. The results showed that the jet entrains more with smaller AR. Special attention has been drawn to the influence of the Reynolds number (based on hydraulic diameter) as well as the inflow conditions on the evolution of the rectangular jet. An influence on the jet evolution is found for smaller Re, but the jet is close to a converged state for higher Reynolds numbers. The inflow conditions have considerable influence on the jet characteristics.  相似文献

In the present case, the conjugate heat transfer involving a turbulent plane offset jet is considered. The bottom wall of the solid block is maintained at an isothermal temperature higher than the jet inlet temperature. The parameters considered are the offset ratio (OR), the conductivity ratio (K), the solid slab thickness (S) and the Prandtl number (Pr). The Reynolds number considered is 15,000 because the flow becomes fully turbulent and then it becomes independent of the Reynolds number. The ranges of parameters considered are: OR = 3, 7 and 11, K = 1–1,000, S = 1–10 and Pr = 0.01–100. High Reynolds number two-equation model (k–ε) has been used for turbulence modeling. Results for the solid–fluid interface temperature, local Nusselt number, local heat flux, average Nusselt number and average heat transfer have been presented and discussed.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation(DNS) of spatially developing round turbulent jet flow with Reynolds number 4,700 was carried out. Over 20 million grid points were used in this simulation. Fully compressible three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations were solved. High order explicit spatial difference schemes and Runge–Kutta time integration scheme were used to calculate derivatives and time marching, respectively. Non-reflecting boundary conditions and exit zone techniques were adopted. Some refined computational grids were used in order to capture the smallest turbulent structures near the centerline of the jet. Low level disturbance were imposed on the jet inflow velocity to trigger the developing of turbulence. Turbulent statistics such as mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, third order velocity moments were obtained and compared with experimental data. One-dimensional velocity autospectra was also calculated. The inertial region where the spectra decays according to the k − 5/3 was observed. The quantitative profiles of mean velocity and all of the third order velocity moments which were difficult to measure via experimental techniques were presented here in detail. The jet flow was proven to be close to fully self-similar around 19 jet diameters downstream of jet exit. The statistic data and revealed flow feature obtained in this paper can provide valuable reference for round turbulent jet research.  相似文献

The paper presents numerical investigations of square jets in a wide range of Reynolds numbers with varying inlet turbulence characteristics. The research focuses on flow characteristics depending on inflow turbulent length/time scales and excitation frequencies in case of excited jets. It is found that the parameters of inlet turbulence affect the solutions qualitatively when the Reynolds number is sufficiently low. In these cases the impact of varying the turbulent time scale is considerably larger than changing the turbulent length scale. It was also observed that at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers the jets become quite independent of the inlet turbulence characteristics. This confirms findings of Xu et al. (Phys. Fluids, 2013) concerning weak/strong dependence of the jet evolution on inflow conditions. In case of excited jets the excitation frequencies play an important role and influence the jet behaviour most strongly at lower values of the Reynolds number. For some forcing frequencies a bifurcation occurs at sufficiently large forcing amplitudes. This phenomenon turned out to be independent of the assumed length and time scales of the turbulent fluctuations, both in terms of robustness as well as amplitude.  相似文献

A comparative study of the length scales and morphology of dissipation fields in turbulent jet flames and non-reacting jets provides a quantitative analysis of the effects of heat release on the fine-scale structure of turbulent mixing. Planar laser Rayleigh scattering is used for highly resolved measurements of the thermal and scalar dissipation in the near fields of CH4/H2/N2 jet flames (Re d  = 15,200 and 22,800) and non-reacting propane jets (Re d  = 7,200–21,700), respectively. Heat release increases the dissipation cutoff length scales in the reaction zone of the flames such that they are significantly larger than the cutoff scales of non-reacting jets with comparable jet exit Reynolds numbers. Fine-scale anisotropy is enhanced in the reaction zone. At x/d = 10, the peaks of the dissipation angle PDFs in the Re d  = 15,200 and 22,800 jet flames exceed those of non-reacting jets with corresponding jet exit Reynolds numbers by factors of 2.3 and 1.8, respectively. Heat release significantly reduces the dissipation layer curvature in the reaction zone and in the low-temperature periphery of the jet flames. These results suggest that the reaction zone shields the outer regions of the jet flame from the highly turbulent flow closer to the jet axis.  相似文献

 Mean velocities and turbulence characteristics of a turbulent plane offset jet with a small offset ratio of 2.125 have been studied using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Static pressure measurements highlight the importance of side plates in enhancing two-dimensionality of the jet. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress show a high turbulence recirculating flow region close to the nozzle plate between the jet and the offset plate. The LDA results have been used to examine the capability of three different turbulence models (i.e. k–ɛ, RNG and Reynolds stress) in predicting the velocity field of this jet. While all three models are able to predict qualitatively the recirculation, converging and reattachment regions observed experimentally, the standard k–ɛ turbulence model predicts a reattachment length that best agrees with the experimentally determined value. Direct and large-eddy simulations (DNS/LES) of accelerating round jets are used to analyze the effects of acceleration on the kinematics of vortex rings in the near field of the jet (x/D < 12). The acceleration is obtained by increasing the nozzle jet velocity with time, in a previously established (steady) jet, and ends once the inlet jet velocity is equal to twice its initial value. Several acceleration rates (α = 0.02–0.6) and Reynolds numbers (Re D = 500–20000) were simulated. Acceleration maps were used to make a detailed study of the kinematics of vortex rings in accelerating jets. One of the effects of the acceleration is to cause a number of new primary and secondary vortex merging events that are absent from steady jets. As the acceleration rate α increases, both the number of primary merging events between rings and the axial position where these take place decreases. The statistics for the speed of the starting ring that forms at the start of the acceleration phase for each simulation, agree well with the statistics for the “front” speed observed by Zhang and Johari (Phys Fluids 8:2185–2195, 1996). Acceleration maps and flow visualizations show that during the acceleration phase the near field coherent vortices become smaller and are formed at an higher frequency than in the steady jet, and their (mean) shedding frequency increases linearly with the acceleration rate. Finally, it was observed that the acceleration decreases the spreading rate of the jet, in agreement with previous experimental works.   相似文献

Multigrid cross-correlation digital particle image velocimetry (MCCDPIV) is used to investigate the stability and structure of low Reynolds number axisymmetric jets. The in-plane velocities, out-of-plane vorticity and some of the components of the Reynolds stress tensor are measured. Two Reynolds numbers based on the orifice outlet diameter are examined (680 and 1,030) at two different positions: one close to the orifice, ranging from 2D 0 to 5D 0 (D 0 is the orifice diameter); and the other further from the orifice, ranging from 10D 0 to 14.4D 0. The results show that the lower Reynolds number jet (Re=680) is marginally unstable in the near-orifice region and is best described as laminar. Further downstream some intermittent structures are observed in the jet, and the growth in integrated turbulent kinetic energy with axial position indicates that the jet is also unstable in this region. For the higher Reynolds number jet (Re=1,030) the increasing size and intensity of vortical structures in the jet in the near-orifice region observed from the MCCDPIV data and the growth in integrated turbulent kinetic energy indicate that the jet is unstable. Further downstream this jet is best described as transitional or turbulent. From flow visualisation images in the near-orifice region it seems that, for both Reynolds numbers, shear layer roll-up occurs when the jet exits the orifice and enters the quiescent fluid in the tank, resulting in vortical structures that appear to grow as the jet proceeds. This is indicative of instability in both cases and is consistent with previous flow visualisation studies of low Reynolds number round jets. Discrepancies observed between the flow visualisation results and the MCCDPIV data is addressed. On the basis of flow visualisation results it is generally assumed that round jets are unstable at very low Reynolds number, however the present work shows that this assertion may be incorrect.  相似文献

The near-field instability of variable property jets of air, CO2, and He, issued into the ambient air, has been investigated experimentally within normal gravity and microgravity fields. The density ratio to the ambient air is unity for air jets, more than unity (1.53) for CO2 jets, and less than unity (0.14) for He jets, respectively. The ratio of kinematic viscosity to the ambient air is unity for air jets, less than unity for CO2 jets (0.53), and more than unity for He jets (7.75), respectively. The jet velocity is varied from 0.4 to 1.8 m/s and then the jet Reynolds number varies from 60 for Helium jet to 2,000 for CO2 jet, while the Richardson number varies from negative to positive values. The motion of the jet is visualized using a laser tomographic method and recorded by a high-speed digital video camera with 250 frames/s. The result shows that the instability of the jet is intensified when Re > 800 while it is weakened at Re < 800 at the microgravity field, indicating that the viscosity plays an important role in weakening the instability. Under a normal gravity field, the buoyancy also becomes important. In order to quantify the instability criteria, the quantity of the instability is introduced, which consists of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, buoyancy effect and viscous effect. When the ratio of the sum of Kelvin–Helmholtz and buoyancy forces to viscous force exceeds a certain value, around 12 in the present study, the jet becomes unstable even when Re < 800. These results reveal that the instability of variable property jets is influenced by the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, the viscous effect and the buoyancy effect.  相似文献

 Impinging jet combusting flows on granite plates are studied. A mathematical model for calculating heat release in turbulent impinging premixed flames is developed. The combustion including radiative heat transfer and local extinction effects, and flow characteristics are modeled using a finite volume computational approach. Two different eddy viscosity turbulence models, namely the standard k–ɛ and the RNG k–ɛ model with and without radiation (discrete transfer model) are assessed. The heat released predictions are compared with experimental data and the agreement is satisfactory only when both radiative heat transfer and local extinction modeling are taken into account. The results indicate that the main effect of radiation is the decrease of temperature values near the jet stagnation point and along the plate surface. Radiation increases temperature gradients and affects predicted turbulence levels independently of the closure model used. Also, the RNG k–ɛ predicts higher temperatures close the solid plate, with and without radiative heat transfer. Received on 13 November 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

This paper presents a finite difference technique for solving incompressible turbulent free surface fluid flow problems. The closure of the time‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations is achieved by using the two‐equation eddy‐viscosity model: the high‐Reynolds k–ε (standard) model, with a time scale proposed by Durbin; and a low‐Reynolds number form of the standard k–ε model, similar to that proposed by Yang and Shih. In order to achieve an accurate discretization of the non‐linear terms, a second/third‐order upwinding technique is adopted. The computational method is validated by applying it to the flat plate boundary layer problem and to impinging jet flows. The method is then applied to a turbulent planar jet flow beneath and parallel to a free surface. Computations show that the high‐Reynolds k–ε model yields favourable predictions both of the zero‐pressure‐gradient turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate and jet impingement flows. However, the results using the low‐Reynolds number form of the k–ε model are somewhat unsatisfactory. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Velocity and scalar concentration characteristics of low Reynolds number (Re) neutrally buoyant turbulent round jets were studied using coupled particle image velocimetry and laser induced fluorescence. Experiments were conducted on a jet with a fully developed pipe exit profile at Re = 1,500 and Re = 4,000. Measurements were made in the far field (60 < x/D < 80). Results show that the centerline velocity decay constant increases with Re and the virtual origin is located far from the jet exit. The Re does not have such an influence on the scalar concentration decay constant and scalar field virtual origin. Centerline turbulent intensities show evidence of becoming self-similar past x/D ≈ 75 but the same is not observed in the scalar fluctuations. The latter are strongly influenced by the Re, increasing as entrainment of ambient flow on the jet axis increases as the flow approaches laminar conditions. Scalar fluxes showed a marked Re dependence as well. Results were used to estimate the turbulent Schmidt number which decreases as the Re decreases.  相似文献

Through an improved ε transport equation, a major quality enhancement of the cubic k–ε model, earlier developed in[13], is obtained. The ε-equation of [13],yielding good results for wall-bounded and rotating flows, is combined with the one derived by Shih et al. [20], which produces good results for free shear flows (e.g. the plane jet–round jet anomaly is resolved).Results are presented for the following flows: fully developed stationary and rotating channel and pipe, backward-facing step, sudden pipe expansion, smooth channel expansion and contraction, plane and round jet. Heat transfer predictions in turbulent impinging jets are also discussed. Accurate results are obtained for the mean flow quantities for all test cases, without case dependent model tuning. Large-Eddy simulations (LES) of spatially evolving turbulent buoyant round jets have been carried out with two different density ratios. The numerical method used is based on a low-Mach-number version of the Navier–Stokes equations for weakly compressible flow using a second-order centre-difference scheme for spatial discretization in Cartesian coordinates and an Adams–Bashforth scheme for temporal discretization. The simulations reproduce the typical temporal and spatial development of turbulent buoyant jets. The near-field dynamic phenomenon of puffing associated with the formation of large vortex structures near the plume base with a varicose mode of instability and the far-field random motions of small-scale eddies are well captured. The pulsation frequencies of the buoyant plumes compare reasonably well with the experimental results of Cetegen (1997) under different density ratios, and the underlying mechanism of the pulsation instability is analysed by examining the vorticity transport equation where it is found that the baroclinic torque, buoyancy force and volumetric expansion are the dominant terms. The roll-up of the vortices is broken down by a secondary instability mechanism which leads to strong turbulent mixing and a subsequent jet spreading. The transition from laminar to turbulence occurs at around four diameters when random disturbances with a 5% level of forcing are imposed to a top-hat velocity profile at the inflow plane and the transition from jet-like to plume-like behaviour occurs further downstream. The energy-spectrum for the temperature fluctuations show both −5/3 and −3 power laws, characteristic of buoyancy-dominated flows. Comparisons are conducted between LES results and experimental measurements, and good agreement has been achieved for the mean and turbulence quantities. The decay of the centreline mean velocity is proportional to x −1/3 in the plume-like region consistent with the experimental observation, but is different from the x −1 law for a non-buoyant jet, where x is the streamwise location. The distributions of the mean velocity, temperature and their fluctuations in the near-field strongly depend upon the ratio of the ambient density to plume density ρa0. The increase of ρa0 under buoyancy forcing causes an increase in the self-similar turbulent intensities and turbulent fluxes and an increase in the spatial growth rate. Budgets of the mean momentum, energy, temperature variance and turbulent kinetic energy are analysed and it is found that the production of turbulence kinetic energy by buoyancy relative to the production by shear is increased with the increase of ρa0. In this paper, we report results of a numerical investigation of turbulent natural gas combustion for a jet in a coflow of lean combustion products in the Delft-Jet-in-Hot-Coflow (DJHC) burner which emulates MILD (Moderate and Intense Low Oxygen Dilution) combustion behavior. The focus is on assessing the performance of the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) model in combination with two-equation turbulence models and chemical kinetic schemes for about 20 species (Correa mechanism and DRM19 mechanism) by comparing predictions with experimental measurements. We study two different flame conditions corresponding to two different oxygen levels (7.6% and 10.9% by mass) in the hot coflow, and for two jet Reynolds number (Re = 4,100 and Re = 8,800). The mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy predicted by different turbulence models are in good agreement with data without exhibiting large differences among the model predictions. The realizable k-ε model exhibits better performance in the prediction of entrainment. The EDC combustion model predicts too early ignition leading to a peak in the radial mean temperature profile at too low axial distance. However the model correctly predicts the experimentally observed decreasing trend of lift-off height with jet Reynolds number. A detailed analysis of the mean reaction rate of the EDC model is made and as possible cause for the deviations between model predictions and experiments a low turbulent Reynolds number effect is identified. Using modified EDC model constants prediction of too early ignition can be avoided. The results are weakly sensitive to the sub-model for laminar viscosity and laminar diffusion fluxes.  相似文献

A computational investigation is carried out to study the flow and heat transfer from a row of circular jets impinging on a concave surface. The computational domain simulates the impingement cooling zone of a gas turbine nozzle guide vane. The parameters, which are varied in the study include jet Reynolds number (Re d = 5000–67800), inter-jet distance to jet diameter ratio (c/d = 3.33 and 4.67) and target plate distance to jet diameter ratio (H/d = 1, 3 and 4). The flow field, predicted with K-ω turbulence model and using Fluent 6.2.16, is characterized with the presence of a pair of counter rotating vortices, an upwash fountain flow and entrainment. The local pressure coefficient and Nusselt number variations along the concave plate are presented and these values are found to under predict the available experimental data by about 12%.  相似文献

The present paper focuses on the analysis of unsteady flow and heat transfer regarding an axisymmetric impinging synthetic jet on a constant heat flux disc. Synthetic jet is a zero net mass flux jet that provides an unsteady flow without any external source of fluid. Present results are validated against the available experimental data showing that the SST/k − ω turbulence model is more accurate and reliable than the standard and low-Re k − ε models for predicting heat transfer from an impinging synthetic jet. It is found that the time-averaged Nusselt number enhances as the nozzle-to-plate distance is increased. As the oscillation frequency in the range of 16–400 Hz is increased, the heat transfer is enhanced. It is shown that the instantaneous Nu distribution along the wall is influenced mainly by the interaction of produced vortex ring and wall boundary layer. Also, the fluctuation level of Nu decreases as the frequency is raised.  相似文献

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of Kolmogorov flows are performed at three different Reynolds numbers Re λ between 110 and 190 by imposing a mean velocity profile in y-direction of the form U(y) = F sin(y) in a periodic box of volume (2π)3. After a few integral times the turbulent flow turns out to be statistically steady. Profiles of mean quantities are then obtained by averaging over planes at constant y. Based on these profiles two different model equations for the mean dissipation ε in the context of two-equation RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes) modelling of turbulence are compared to each other. The high Reynolds number version of the k-ε-model (Jones and Launder, Int J Heat Mass Transfer 15:301–314, 1972), to be called the standard model and a new model by Menter et al. (2006), to be called the Menter–Egorov model, are tested against the DNS results. Both models are solved numerically and it is found that the standard model does not provide a steady solution for the present case, while the Menter–Egorov model does. In addition a fairly good quantitative agreement of the model solution and the DNS data is found for the averaged profiles of the kinetic energy k and the dissipation ε. Furthermore, an analysis based on flow-inherent geometries, called dissipation elements (Wang and Peters, J Fluid Mech 608:113–138, 2008), is used to examine the Menter–Egorov ε model equation. An expression for the evolution of ε is derived by taking appropriate moments of the equation for the evolution of the probability density function (pdf) of the length of dissipation elements. A term-by-term comparison with the model equation allows a prediction of the constants, which with increasing Reynolds number approach the empirical values.  相似文献

 The entrainment rates of vertical and inclined jets impinging on a stratified interface are measured in water tank experiments. At moderate Richardson number, the entrainment rate of the vertical jet is proportional to Ri -1/2, independent of Reynolds number. The inclined jets are tilted at 15° from the vertical. In one case, the jet nozzle is rotated about a vertical axis, so that the inclined jet precesses, while in the other, it is stationary. The inclined jets entrain at a rate proportional to Ri -3/2, whether precessing or not. This behavior is consistent with a new model of stratified entrainment which accounts for vortex persistence. Three-dimensional turbulent forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics, and the non-dimensional entropy generation number in a helical coiled tube subjected to uniform wall temperature are simulated using the k–ε standard turbulence model. A finite volume method is employed to solve the governing equations. The effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the average friction factor and Nusselt number are discussed. The results presented in this paper cover a Reynolds number range of 2 × 104 to 6 × 104, a pitch range of 0.1–0.2 and a curvature ratio range of 0.1–0.3. The results show that the coil pitch, curvature ratio and Reynolds number have different effects on the average friction factor and Nusselt number at different cross-sections. In addition, the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a helical coiled tube with a larger curvature ratio for turbulent flow are different from that of smaller curvature ratio for laminar and turbulent flow in certain ways. Some new features that are not obtained in previous researches are revealed. Moreover, the effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the non-dimensional entropy generation number of turbulent forced convection in a helical coiled tube are also discussed.  相似文献
