Excited states in the 134Sb nucleus, populated in the β--decay of 134Sn, have been studied at the mass separator OSIRIS. The 134Sn activity was produced via fast neutron-induced fission of 238U target. A main result was the discovery of a very low-lying first-excited state of 134Sb, at 13keV, which has led to a strong revision of the level scheme. The new results are compared with different theoretical
calculations and with the known data for the analogous neutron and proton two-particle nucleus in the 208Pb region. On the basis of this comparison, the energy of the ( πg
7/2νf
7/2)7- isomer is estimated to be about 250keV, some 100keV lower than previously reported.

The neutron-rich nuclei 23
60-63V have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a 61.8A·MeV 76Ge beam with a 58Ni target. Beta-decay to 24
60-63Cr has been investigated using combined β- and γ-ray spectroscopy. Half-lives of the 60-63V nuclei have been determined, and the existence of a beta-decay isomer in the 60V nucleus is strongly supported. The observation of low-energy 2+ states in 60Cr (646keV) and 62Cr (446keV) suggests that these isotopes are strongly deformed with β2 ∼ 0.3. This is confirmed by shell model calculations which show the dominant influence of the intruder g and d orbitals to obtain low 2+ energies in the neutron-rich Cr isotopes.

The low-energy nuclear structure and decay properties of the neutron-deficient isotopes 195At and 191Bi have been studied. 195At was produced in the reaction 142Nd(56Fe,p2n)195At and 191Bi as the daughter activity of 195At. The activities were implanted in a position-sensitive silicon detector after being separated from the primary beam by
a gas-filled recoil separator. The 1/2+ intruder state was determined to be the ground state in 195At with an alpha-decay energy of E
α = 6953(3) keV and a half-life T
1/2 = 328(20) ms. Another state with an alpha-decay energy E
α = 7075(4) keV and a half-life T
1/2 = 147(5) ms was found to decay to a 148.7(5) keV excited state in 191Bi for which a spin and parity of 7/2- were deduced. Consequently, the same 7/2- character was assigned to the initial state at 32(7) keV in 195At on the basis of unhindered alpha-decay. The 9/2- state, being the ground state in heavier odd-mass astatine isotopes, was not observed.

The radioactive decay of 217Pa was investigated by means of α-γ-spectroscopy. Fine structure in the ground-state α-decay was established. Ambiguities
in the fine structure of the α-decay of the previously known isomeric state could be clarified by α-γ-coincidence measurements.
A previously unknown α-transition of E
α = (8306 ± 5) keV was detected and identified by means of delayed α-α- and α-γ-γ-coincidence measurements. A second isomeric
state decaying by α-emission was not observed. The quality of the previously reported data of the α-decay fine structure of
217Th was improved.

The β--decay of 151Pr produced by the thermal neutron-induced fission of 235U has been studied using an on-line isotope separator. From an internal-conversion electron measurement with a Si(Li) detector,
K-conversion coefficients were obtained for 20 γ-transitions. Spins and parities of 6 excited levels in 151Nd were newly determined from the deduced multipolarities: even parities for the 543 and 627 keV levels, odd parities for
250 and 599 keV, (3/2, 5/2)+ for 685 keV, and (1/2, 3/2)+ for 880 keV. The level structure was compared with the rotation-vibration coupling Nilsson model.

The structure properties of the even-even nuclei 226, 228, 230, 232, 234Th, 230, 232, 234, 236, 238, 240U, 240, 242, 244, 246Pu, and 242, 244, 246, 248Cm have been investigated at normal and superdeformed shapes in microscopic mean-field calculations based on Gogny force.
Collective levels are predicted from constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and configuration mixing calculations. Two quasiparticle
states are also predicted from blocking calculations for neutron and proton configurations. Predictions are shown and compared

Radium isotopes with mass numbers from 209 to 212 have been produced by heavy-ion fusion reactions 204Pb( 12C, xn) 216-Ra. Radioactive decay properties were investigated by means of α- and α-γ-spectroscopy after in-flight separation of the evaporation
residues from the projectile beam by the velocity filter SHIP and implantation into a 16-strip position-sensitive Si detector.
For the even-even nuclei 210,212Ra we identified α transitions into the first-excited 2+-state of the daughter nuclei 206,208Rn. Weak α transitions into excited levels of the odd-A daughter nuclei 205,207Rn were also observed.

The 109,111,113Rh nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in the fusion reaction 18O + 208Pb at 85 MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma-rays detected using the Euroball IV array. High-spin states of
the neutron-rich 111,113Rh nuclei have been identified for the first time. Several rotational bands with the odd proton occupying the πg
9/2, πp
1/2 and π(g
7/2/d
5/2) sub-shells have been observed. A band of low-energy transitions has been identified at excitation energy around 2 MeV in
109,111Rh, which can be interpreted in terms of three-quasiparticle excitation, πg
9/2νh
11/2νg
7/2/d
5/2. In addition another structure built on states located at low excitation energy (608 keV in 111Rh, 570 keV in 113Rh) points out that, as already observed in the lighter isotopes 107,109Rh, triaxial deformation plays a role in the neutron-rich Rh isotopes well beyond the mid-shell.

This paper presents results of the experiments aimed at producing long-lived superheavy elements located near the spherical-shell
closures with Z ⩾ 114 and N ⩾ 172 in the 244Pu + 48Ca and 248Cm + 48Ca reactions. The large measured α-particle energies of the newly observed nuclei, together with the long decay times and
spontaneous fission terminating the chains, offer evidence of the decay of nuclei with high atomic numbers. The decay properties
of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive α-decays originating from the parent nuclides 288, 289114 and 292116, produced in the 3n and 4n evaporation channels with cross-sections of about a picobarn. The present observations can be considered as experimental
evidence of the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements.

The 115, 117, 119, 121In nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in three reactions induced by heavy ions: 12C + 238U at 90MeV bombarding energy, 18O + 208Pb reaction at 85MeV, and 31P + 176Yb at 152MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma-rays detected using the EUROBALL III and IV arrays. High-spin
states of 117, 119, 121In nuclei have been identified for the first time. Moreover, isomeric states lying around 2.5MeV have been established in
119, 121In from the delayed coincidences between the fission fragment detector SAPhIR and the gamma array. Most of the observed states
can be described by coupling a proton g
9/2 hole to a Sn core, while the intruder band based on an orbital from the π[g
7/2/d
5/2] sub-shells behaves as the ground-state band of neighbouring Cd isotopes.

A new band, populated by the spontaneous fission of 248Cm and studied by means of prompt γ-ray spectroscopy using the EUROGAM2 array, was observed in 99Zr. The 1038.8 keV band head with a half-life T
1/2 = 54(10) ns is interpreted as a K-isomer, corresponding to the 9/2[404] neutron-hole excitation. It is the first observation of this orbital in the mass A ∼ 100 region. The quadrupole moment, Q
0 = 3.9(3) eb deduced for the new band indicates a large deformation of β = 0.41, which is produced by a specific shape-coexistence
mechanism, known in other regions and now found in the A ∼ 100 nuclei.

In recent experiments at GANIL, we studied nuclei at the one- and two-proton drip line. The production rates allowed to search
for direct 2p emission in the drip line nuclei 42Cr, 45Fe, and 49Ni. No evidence for this decay mode was found in 42Cr and 49Ni, whereas the situation stays unclear for 45Fe due to the limited statistics. In the medium-mass region ( A = 50-70), the half-life was measured for all proton-rich nuclei in the range T
z = 0 to T
z = - 1 between Z = 27 and Z = 36. First half-lives were determined for 60Ga, 62Ge, 64As and 66Se. Finally, β-decay studies of the 0+ → 0+ decay of 62Ga have been performed at IGISOL in Jyv?skyl?. Non-analog transitions have been observed and are compared to theoretical predictions.

A kinematically complete measurement was made of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B nuclei on a Pb target at 83 MeV/nucleon. The cross-section was measured at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical
S-factor for the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction. A first-order perturbation theory analysis of the reaction dynamics including E1, E2, and M1 transitions was employed to extract the E1 strength relevant to neutrino-producing reactions in the solar interior. By fitting the measured cross-section from E
rel = 130 keV to 400 keV, we find S
17(0) = 17.8+1.4
-1.2 eV b. Semiclassical 1st-order perturbation theory and fully quantum-mechanical continuum-discretized coupled-channels analyses
yield nearly identical results for the E1 strength relevant to solar-neutrino flux calculations, suggesting that theoretical reaction mechanism uncertainties need
not limit the precision of Coulomb-breakup determinations of the 7Be(p,γ)8B S-factor. A recommended value of S
17(0) based on a weighted average of this and other measurements is presented. This recommendation implies a revised value for
the theoretical flux of 8B solar neutrinos, which is also given.-1
