In this paper, we study a scheduling problem of jobs from two different queues on several parallel servers. Jobs have exponentially distributed processing times, and incur costs per unit of time, until they leave the system, and there are no arrivals to the system at any time. The objective is to find the optimal strategy, i.e., to allocate the servers to the queues, such that the expected holding costs are minimized. We give a sufficient condition for which it is always optimal to allocate the servers only to jobs of a certain queue. Finally, the case of two servers is completely solved.  相似文献

We consider scheduling for heterogeneous server systems, where tasks arrive according to a Poisson process, with their processing requirements following a discrete distribution with finite support. For a system with a dispatcher and several heterogeneous servers, we propose an optimized multi-layered round robin routing policy followed by shortest remaining processing time scheduling at each server. Using a heavy traffic approximation, we show that the proposed policy performs as well as the optimal scheduling policy for a heterogeneous servers system with a single queue (no routing) in heavy traffic. Additional simulation results suggest that such policies will be effective in more general settings.  相似文献

In this paper, a Markovian queue with two heterogeneous servers and multiple vacations has been studied. For this system, the stationary queue length distribution and mean system size have been obtained by using matrix geometric method. The busy period analysis of the system and mean waiting time distribution are discussed. Extensive numerical illustrations are provided.  相似文献

This paper considers a simple discrete-time queueing model with two types (classes) of customers (types 1 and 2) each having their own dedicated server (servers A and B resp.). New customers enter the system according to a general independent arrival process, i.e., the total numbers of arrivals during consecutive time slots are i.i.d. random variables with arbitrary distribution. Service times are deterministically equal to 1 slot each. The system uses a “global FCFS” service discipline, i.e., all arriving customers are accommodated in one single FCFS queue, regardless of their types. As a consequence of the “global FCFS” rule, customers of one type may be blocked by customers of the other type, in that they may be unable to reach their dedicated server even at times when this server is idle, i.e., the system is basically non-workconserving. One major aim of the paper is to estimate the negative impact of this phenomenon on the queueing performance of the system, in terms of the achievable throughput, the system occupancy, the idle probability of each server and the delay. As it is clear that customers of different types hinder each other more as they tend to arrive in the system more clustered according to class, the degree of “class clustering” in the arrival process is explicitly modeled in the paper and its very direct impact on the performance measures is revealed. The motivation of our work are systems where this kind of blocking is encountered, such as input-queueing network switches or road splits.  相似文献

We analyze sequencing policies designed to most effectively utilize the resources of a closed queueing network representation of a manufacturing system. A continuous time Markov decision process formulation is used to compare the performance of optimal sequencing policies and a heuristic developed by analyzing a heavy traffic approximation of the system.  相似文献

In this paper we construct a multi-level queueing model that alternates between three modes of an operation system. The service times have followed an Erlang type K   distribution with parameter μμ. Customers arrive in batches according to a time-homogeneous compound Poisson process with mean rate λλ for the batches. Our aim is to give a recursive scheme for the solution of the steady state equations. Next we derive some important measures of performance which may affect the efficiency of the system under consideration such as the expected waiting time per customer, the expected number of customers who arrive to a full system. The expected number of customers will also be calculated. Finally, we can also calculate the efficiency measures of the system by using the recursive results through an example.  相似文献

We study Markovian queueing systems consisting of two stations in tandem. There is a dedicated server in each station and an additional server that can be assigned to any station. Assuming that linear holding costs are incurred by jobs in the system and two servers can collaborate to work on the same job, we determine structural properties of optimal server assignment policies under the discounted and the average cost criteria.  相似文献

Recently, [1] have obtained the transient solution of multi-server queue with balking and reneging. In this paper, a similar technique is used to drive a new elegant explicit solution for a two heterogeneous servers queue with impatient behavior. In addition, steady-state probabilities of the system size are studied and some important performance measures are discussed for the considered system.  相似文献

We introduce a family of undiscounted branching bandits on parallel servers under controls which can impose priorities between customer classes. This family can be used to model a wide range of multi-class queueing scheduling problems, with the capacity to incorporate problem features such as machine breakdowns, complex patterns of preemption/non-preemption and semi-Markov extensions. An index policy (which we call Klimov's rule) is developed which is optimal in the particular case of a single server. An expression for its cost suboptimality is given for parallel servers. Under additional conditions on the nature of the stochastic evolution of the systems concerned, the policy is shown to be asymptotically optimal in a heavy traffic limit. These general results are utilised to develop an analysis of the index policy for a parallel server version of Klimov's classical M/GI/1 system with Bernoulli feedback. We consider a finite single-server maintenance queue with multiple types of customers. The difference between customers' types is defined by the offered rewards. We show that the optimal admission control policy for maximizing the long-run average reward per unit time has a trunk reservation structure. Meanwhile, if the equipment is off, there exists a threshold of the queue length, above which the optimal repair speed is increasing in the queue length and below which the optimal repair speed is 0.  相似文献

Boundary value methods are applied to find transient solutions of M/M/2M/M/2 queueing systems with two heterogeneous servers under a variant vacation policy. An iterative method is employed to solve the resulting large linear system and a Crank–Nicolson preconditioner is used to accelerate the convergence. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.  相似文献

We consider a service system with a single server, a finite waiting room and two classes of customers with deterministic service time. Primary jobs arrive at random and are admitted whenever there is room in the system. At the beginning of each period, secondary jobs can be admitted from an infinite pool. A revenue is earned upon admission of each job, with the primary jobs bringing a higher contribution than the secondary jobs, the objective being to maximize the total discounted revenue over an infinite horizon. We model the system as a discrete time Markov decision process and show that a monotone admission policy is optimal when the number of primary arrivals has a fixed distribution. Moreover, when the primary arrival distribution varies with time according to a finite state Markov chain, we show that the optimal policy is conditionally monotone and that the numerical computation of an optimal policy, in this case, is substantially more difficult than in the case of stationary arrivals. This research was supported in part by the National Science Foundation, under grant ECS-8803061, while the author was at the University of Arizona.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the stability of a preemptive priority queueing system with customer transfers. Conditions for the queueing system to be stable/unstable are found. An interesting result is that the stability/instability conditions are independent of the service rates of lower priority customers and the transfer rates.  相似文献

operating under the triadic (0,Q, N,M) policy, where L is the maximum number of customers in the system. The number of working servers can be adjusted one at a time at arrival epochs or at service completion epochs depending on the number of customers in the system. Analytic closed-form solutions of the controllable M/M/2 queueing system with finite capacity operating under the triadic (0,Q, N,M) policy are derived. This is a generalization of the ordinary M/M/2 and the controllable M/M/1 queueing systems in the literature. The total expected cost function per unit time is developed to obtain the optimal operating (0,Q, N,M) policy at minimum cost.  相似文献

Customers arrive in a renewal process at a queue which is served by an exponential and a two-stage Erlangian server. We prove the optimal policy for assignment of customers to the servers which for any t maximizes the expected number of served customers in [0,t].  相似文献

This paper considers a scheduling problem occurring in a specialized service system with parallel servers. In the system, customers are divided into the “ordinary” and “special” categories according to their service needs. Ordinary customers can be served by any server, while special customers can be served only by the flexible servers. We assume that the service time for any ordinary customer is the same and all special customers have another common service time. We analyze three classes of service policies used in practice, namely, policies with priority, policies without priority and mixed policies. The worst-case performance ratios are obtained for all of these service policies.  相似文献

We propose an off-line delayed-start LPT algorithm that sequences the first (longest) 5 jobs optimally and the remaining jobs according to the LPT principle on two identical parallel machines. We show that this algorithm has a sharper tight worst-case ratio bound than the traditional LPT algorithm for the sum of squares of machine completion times minimization problem.  相似文献

This paper studies the operating characteristics of the variant of an M[x]/G/1 vacation queue with startup and closedown times. After all the customers are served in the system exhaustively, the server shuts down (deactivates) by a closedown time, and then takes at most J vacations of constant time length T repeatedly until at least one customer is found waiting in the queue upon returning from a vacation. If at least one customer is present in the system when the server returns from a vacation, then the server reactivates and requires a startup time before providing the service. On the other hand, if no customers arrive by the end of the J th vacation, the server remains dormant in the system until at least one customer arrives. We will call the vacation policy modified T vacation policy. We derive the steady‐state probability distribution of the system size and the queue waiting time. Other system characteristics are also investigated. The long‐run average cost function per unit time is developed to determine the suitable thresholds of T and J that yield a minimum cost. This paper consider the (BMAP1, BMAP2)/(PH1, PH2)/N retrial queue with finite-position buffer. The behavior of the system is described in terms of continuous time multi-dimensional Markov chain. Arriving type I calls find all servers busy and join the buffer, if the positions of the buffer are insufficient, they can go to orbit. Arriving type II calls find all servers busy and join the orbit directly. Each server can provide two types heterogeneous services with Phase-type (PH) time distribution to every arriving call (including types I and II calls), arriving calls have an option to choose either type of services. The model is quite general enough to cover most of the systems in communication networks. We derive the ergodicity condition, the stationary distribution and the main performance characteristics of the system. The effects of various parameters on the system performance measures are illustrated numerically.  相似文献

We consider a simple Markovian queue with Poisson arrivals and exponential service times for jobs. The controller chooses state-dependent service rates from an action space. The queue has a finite buffer, and when full, new jobs get rejected. The controller’s objective is to choose optimal service rates that meet a quality-of-service constraint. We solve this problem analytically and compute it numerically under two cases: When the action space is unbounded and when it is bounded.  相似文献
