Let (M m , T) be a smooth involution on a closed smooth m-dimensional manifold and F = ∪ j=0 n F j (nm) its fixed point set, where F j denotes the union of those components of F having dimension j. The famous Five Halves Theorem of J. Boardman, announced in 1967, establishes that, if F is nonbounding, then m ≤ 5/2n. In this paper we obtain an improvement of the Five Halves Theorem when the top dimensional component of F, F n , is nonbounding. Specifically, let ω = (i 1, i 2, …, i r ) be a non-dyadic partition of n and s ω (x 1, x 2, …, x n ) the smallest symmetric polynomial over Z 2 on degree one variables x 1, x 2, …, x n containing the monomial \(x_1^{i_1 } x_2^{i_2 } \cdots x_r^{i_r }\). Write s ω (F n ) ∈ H n (F n , Z 2) for the usual cohomology class corresponding to s ω (x 1, x 2, …, x n ), and denote by ?(F n ) the minimum length of a nondyadic partition ω with s ω (F n ) ≠ 0 (here, the length of ω = (i 1, i 2, …, i r ) is r). We will prove that, if (M m , T) is an involution for which the top dimensional component of the fixed point set, F n , is nonbounding, then m ≤ 2n + ?(F n ); roughly speaking, the bound for m depends on the degree of decomposability of the top dimensional component of the fixed point set. Order-sharp estimates are established for the best N-term approximations of functions from Nikol’skii–Besov type classes Bpqsm(Tk) with respect to the multiple trigonometric system T(k) in the metric of Lr(Tk) for a number of relations between the parameters s, p, q, r, and m (s = (s1,..., sn) ∈ R+n, 1 ≤ p, q, r ≤ ∞, m = (m1,..., mn) ∈ Nn, k = m1 +... + mn). Let G = (V,A) be a digraph and k ≥ 1 an integer. For u, vV, we say that the vertex u distance k-dominate v if the distance from u to v at most k. A set D of vertices in G is a distance k-dominating set if each vertex of V D is distance k-dominated by some vertex of D. The distance k-domination number of G, denoted by γ k (G), is the minimum cardinality of a distance k-dominating set of G. Generalized de Bruijn digraphs G B (n, d) and generalized Kautz digraphs G K (n, d) are good candidates for interconnection networks. Denote Δ k := (∑ j=0 k d j )?1. F. Tian and J. Xu showed that ?nΔ k ? γ k (G B (n, d)) ≤?n/d k? and ?nΔ k ? ≤ γ k (G K (n, d)) ≤ ?n/d k ?. In this paper, we prove that every generalized de Bruijn digraph G B (n, d) has the distance k-domination number ?nΔ k ? or ?nΔ k ?+1, and the distance k-domination number of every generalized Kautz digraph G K (n, d) bounded above by ?n/(d k?1+d k )?. Given an arbitrary continuous function f(x, y) on the square [?1, 1]2, we construct the discrete partial Fourier-Jacobi sums of the rectangular type S m, n, N α,β (f; x, y) by the orthogonal system introduced above. We prove that the order of the Lebesgue constants ∥S m, n, N α,β ∥ of the discrete sums S m, n, N α,β (f; x, y) for ?1/2 < α, β < 1/2, m + nN ? 1 is O((mn) q + 1/2), where q = max?ub;α,β?ub;. We consider the relative widths dn(Wpr, MWpr, Lp), which characterize the best approximation of the class Wpr in the space Lp by linear subspaces for which (in contrast to Kolmogorov widths) it is additionally required that the approximating functions g should lie in MWpr, i.e., ‖g(r)pM. We establish estimates for the relative widths in the cases of p = 1 and p = ∞; it follows from these estimates that for almost optimal (with error at most Cn?r, where C is an absolute constant) approximations of the class Wpr by linear 2n-dimensional spaces, the norms of the rth derivatives of some approximating functions are not less than cln min(n, r) for large n and r.  相似文献

These conditions include, in particular, the strong connectedness of the spaces W1,ps) with the space W1,p(Ω), the condition of exhaustion of the domain Ω by the domains Ωs, the Γ-convergence of the sequence {Fs} to a functional F: W1,p(Ω) → ?, and a certain convergence of the sequence {Gs} to a functional G: W1,p(Ω) → ?. We also assume some conditions characterizing both the internal properties of the mappings Ks and their relation to the mapping K. The article is devoted to the theory of elliptic functions of level n. An elliptic function of level n determines a Hirzebruch genus called an elliptic genus of level n. Elliptic functions of level n are also of interest because they are solutions of the Hirzebruch functional equations. The elliptic function of level 2 is the Jacobi elliptic sine function, which determines the famous Ochanine–Witten genus. It is the exponential of the universal formal group of the form F(u, v) = (u2 ? v2)/(uB(v) ? vB(u)), B(0) = 1. The elliptic function of level 3 is the exponential of the universal formal group of the form F(u, v) = (u2A(v) ? v2A(u))/(uA(v)2 ? vA(u)2), A(0) = 1, A″(0) = 0. In the present study we show that the elliptic function of level 4 is the exponential of the universal formal group of the form F(u, v) = (u2A(v) ? v2A(u))/(uB(v) ? vB(u)), where A(0) = B(0) = 1 and for B′(0) = A″(0) = 0, A′(0) = A1, and B″(0) = 2B2 the following relation holds: (2B(u) + 3A1u)2 = 4A(u)3 ? (3A12 ? 8B2)u2A(u)2. To prove this result, we express the elliptic function of level 4 in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic functions.  相似文献

The Ramsey number r(K 3,Q n ) is the smallest integer N such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph K N contains either a red n-dimensional hypercube, or a blue triangle. Almost thirty years ago, Burr and Erd?s conjectured that r(K 3,Q n )=2 n+1?1 for every n∈?, but the first non-trivial upper bound was obtained only recently, by Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov, who proved that r(K 3,Q n )?7000·2 n . We study the behavior of the generalized resolvent (B D,ε ? ζQ 0(·/ε))?1 as ε → 0. Here the matrix-valued function Q 0 is periodic, bounded, and positive definite; ζ is a complex-valued parameter. We find approximations of the generalized resolvent in the L 2(O;C n )-operator norm and in the norm of operators acting from L 2(O;C n ) to the Sobolev space H 1(O;C n ) with two-parameter error estimates (depending on ε and ζ). This paper firstly studies the inclusion relations between different lattices, then determines a characterization of flats contained in a given lattice L J , when the lattices form geometric lattice, lastly gives the characteristic polynomial of L J .  相似文献
