The tour construction heuristic that generates initial tours for the tour improvement heuristics plays an important role in solving the travelling salesman problem (TSP). With the help of an effective tour construction heuristic, the performance of a heuristic can be improved. In this study we present a new tour construction algorithm, the construction priority (CP). We incorporate the performance of the CP into metaheuristics such as tabu search, genetic algorithm, space smoothing, and noising methods. The performance of the CP is empirically compared with the nearest neighbour (NN) approach. Extensive computational comparison shows that the CP is considerably more effective compared to NN.  相似文献

Hyperheuristics give us the appealing possibility of abstracting the solution method from the problem, since our hyperheuristic, at each decision point, chooses between different low level heuristics rather than different solutions as is usually the case for metaheuristics. By assembling low level heuristics from parameterised components we may create hundreds or thousands of low level heuristics, and there is increasing evidence that this is effective in dealing with every eventuality that may arise when solving different combinatorial optimisation problem instances since at each iteration the solution landscape is amenable to at least one of the low level heuristics. However, the large number of low level heuristics means that the hyperheuristic has to intelligently select the correct low level heuristic to use, to make best use of available CPU time. This paper empirically investigates several hyperheuristics designed for large collections of low level heuristics and adapts other hyperheuristics from the literature to cope with these large sets of low level heuristics on a difficult real-world workforce scheduling problem. In the process we empirically investigate a wide range of approaches for setting tabu tenure in hyperheuristic methods, for a complex real-world problem. The results show that the hyperheuristic methods described provide a good way to trade off CPU time and solution quality.  相似文献

This paper presents extensive computational experiments to compare 10 heuristics and 20 metaheuristics for the maximum diversity problem (MDP). This problem consists of selecting a subset of maximum diversity from a given set of elements. It arises in a wide range of real-world settings and we can find a large number of studies, in which heuristic and metaheuristic methods are proposed. However, probably due to the fact that this problem has been referenced under different names, we have only found limited comparisons with a few methods on some sets of instances. This paper reviews all the heuristics and metaheuristics for finding near-optimal solutions for the MDP. We present the new benchmark library MDPLIB, which includes most instances previously used for this problem, as well as new ones, giving a total of 315. We also present an exhaustive computational comparison of the 30 methods on the MDPLIB. Non-parametric statistical tests are reported in our study to draw significant conclusions.  相似文献

Variable neighborhood search (VNS) and Greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) are among the well studied local search based metaheuristics providing good results for many combinatorial optimization problems throughout the last decade. While they are usually explored in different environments one may encounter quite obvious commonalities. Based on previous successful applications of these two types of metaheuristics on various network design problems in telecommunications, we further enhance these approaches by incorporating ideas from the pilot method. The different heuristics are compared among each other as well as against objective function values obtained from a mathematical programming formulation based on a commercial solver. The problem instances cover a large variety of networks and demand patterns.  相似文献

We propose two classes for the implementation of hyper-heuristic algorithms. The first is based on constructive heuristics, whereas the second uses improvement methods. Within the latter class, a general framework is designed for the use of local search procedures and metaheuristics as low-level heuristics. A dynamic scheme to guide the use of these approaches is also devised. These ideas are tested on an NP-hard scheduling problem known as the response time variability problem (RTVP). An intensive computational experiment shows, especially in the second class where the new best results are found, the effectiveness of the proposed hyper-heuristics.  相似文献

The Capacitated Minimum Spanning Tree Problem is NP-hard and several heuristic solution methods have been proposed. They can be classified as classical ones and metaheuristics. Recent developments have shown that metaheuristics outperform classical heuristics. However, they require long computation times and there are difficulties in their parameter calibration and coding phases. This explains the popularity of the Esau–Williams (EW) heuristic in practice, and its use in many successful metaheuristics and second-order greedy methods. In this work, we are concerned with the EW heuristic and we propose simple new enhancements. Based on our computational experiments, we can say that they considerably improve its accuracy with minor increase in computation time, and without harming its simplicity.  相似文献

There are significant research opportunities in the integration of Machine Learning (ML) methods and Combinatorial Optimization Problems (COPs). In this work, we focus on metaheuristics to solve COPs that have an important learning component. These algorithms must explore a solution space and learn from the information they obtain in order to find high-quality solutions. Among the metaheuristics, we study Hyper-Heuristics (HHs), algorithms that, given a number of low-level heuristics, iteratively select and apply heuristics to a solution. The HH we consider has a Markov model to produce sequences of low-level heuristics, which we combine with a Multi-Armed Bandit Problem (MAB)-based method to learn its parameters. This work proposes several improvements to the HH metaheuristic that yields a better learning for solving problem instances. Specifically, this is the first work in HHs to present Exponential Weights for Exploration and Exploitation (EXP3) as a learning method, an algorithm that is able to deal with adversarial settings. We also present a case study for the Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW), for which we include a list of low-level heuristics that have been proposed in the literature. We show that our algorithms can handle a large and diverse list of heuristics, illustrating that they can be easily configured to solve COPs of different nature. The computational results indicate that our algorithms are competitive methods for the VRPTW (2.16% gap on average with respect to the best known solutions), demonstrating the potential of these algorithms to solve COPs. Finally, we show how algorithms can even detect low-level heuristics that do not contribute to finding better solutions to the problem.  相似文献

This paper deals with performance evaluation and scheduling problems in m machine stochastic flow shop with unlimited buffers. The processing time of each job on each machine is a random variable exponentially distributed with a known rate. We consider permutation flow shop. The objective is to find a job schedule which minimizes the expected makespan. A classification of works about stochastic flow shop with random processing times is first given. In order to solve the performance evaluation problem, we propose a recursive algorithm based on a Markov chain to compute the expected makespan and a discrete event simulation model to evaluate the expected makespan. The recursive algorithm is a generalization of a method proposed in the literature for the two machine flow shop problem to the m machine flow shop problem with unlimited buffers. In deterministic context, heuristics (like CDS [Management Science 16 (10) (1970) B630] and Rapid Access [Management Science 23 (11) (1977) 1174]) and metaheuristics (like simulated annealing) provide good results. We propose to adapt and to test this kind of methods for the stochastic scheduling problem. Combinations between heuristics or metaheuristics and the performance evaluation models are proposed. One of the objectives of this paper is to compare the methods together. Our methods are tested on problems from the OR-Library and give good results: for the two machine problems, we obtain the optimal solution and for the m machine problems, the methods are mutually validated.  相似文献

In this paper we present a review of approximative solution methods, that is, heuristics and metaheuristics designed for the solution of multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems (MOCO). First, we discuss questions related to approximation in this context, such as performance ratios, bounds, and quality measures. We give some examples of heuristics proposed for the solution of MOCO problems. The main part of the paper covers metaheuristics and more precisely non-evolutionary methods. The pioneering methods and their derivatives are described in a unified way. We provide an algorithmic presentation of each of the methods together with examples of applications, extensions, and a bibliographic note. Finally, we outline trends in this area. The research of M. Balancing assembly lines is a crucial task for manufacturing companies in order to improve productivity and minimize production costs. Despite some progress in exact methods to solve large scale problems, softwares implementing simple heuristics are still the most commonly used tools in industry. Some metaheuristics have also been proposed and shown to improve on classical heuristics but, to our knowledge, no computational experiments have been performed on real industrial applications to clearly assess their performance as well as their flexibility. Here we present a new tabu search algorithm and discuss its differences with respect to those in the literature. We then evaluate its performance on the Type I assembly line balancing problem. Finally, we test our algorithm on a real industrial data set involving 162 tasks, 264 precedence constraints, and where the assembly is carried out on a sequential line with workstations located on both sides of the conveyor, with two possible conveyor heights and no re-positioning of the product. We discuss the flexibility of the metaheuristic and its ability to solve real industrial cases.  相似文献

Landscape analysis has been identified as a promising way to develop efficient optimization methods. Nevertheless, the links between properties of the landscape and efficiency of methods is not easy to understand. In this article, we propose to give a contribution in this field using a vehicle routing problem as an illustration. Metaheuristics use a neighborhood operator that connects solutions of the search space. Thus, this operator acts on the dynamics of the search and impacts metaheuristics efficiency. Therefore, we characterize two landscapes differenciated by their neighborhood function and then, we analyze the performance of classical metaheuristics using one or the other neighborhood operator. Finally, a discussion provides insights on the relations between results of the landscape analysis and results of methods performance.  相似文献

The interest about hybrid optimization methods has grown for the last few years. Indeed, more and more papers about cooperation between heuristics and exact techniques are published. In this paper, we propose to extend an existing taxonomy for hybrid methods involving heuristic approaches in order to consider cooperative schemes between exact methods and metaheuristics. First, we propose some natural approaches for the different schemes of cooperation encountered, and we analyse, for each model, some examples taken from the literature. Producing clear and intelligible layouts of hierarchical digraphs knows a renewed interest in information visualization. Recent experimental results show that metaheuristics are well-adapted methods for this problem. In this paper, we develop a new Hybridized Genetic Algorithm for arc crossing minimization. It follows the basic scheme of a GA with two major differences: problem-based crossovers adapted from ordering GAs are combined with a local search strategy based on averaging heuristics. Computational testing was performed on a set of 180 random hierarchical digraphs of standard sizes with various structures. Results show that the Hybridized Genetic Algorithm significantly outperforms Tabu Search—which is one of the best known methods for this problem- and also a multi-start descent except for highly connected graphs.  相似文献

The n-queens problem is a classical combinatorial optimization problem which has been proved to be NP-hard. The goal is to place n non-attacking queens on an n×n chessboard. In this paper, two single-solution-based (Local Search (LS) and Tuned Simulated Annealing (SA)) and two population-based metaheuristics (two versions of Scatter Search (SS)) are presented for solving the problem. Since parameters of heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms have great influence on their performance, a TOPSIS-Taguchi based parameter tuning method is proposed, which not only considers the number of fitness function evaluations, but also aims to minimize the runtime of the presented metaheuristics. The performance of the suggested approaches was investigated through computational analyses, which showed that the Local Search method outperformed the other two algorithms in terms of average runtimes and average number of fitness function evaluations. The LS was also compared to the Cooperative PSO (CPSO) and SA algorithms, which are currently the best algorithms in the literature for finding the first solution to the n-queens problem, and the results showed that the average fitness function evaluation of the LS is approximately 21 and 8 times less than that of SA and CPSO, respectively. Also, a fitness analysis of landscape for the n-queens problem was conducted which indicated that the distribution of local optima is uniformly random and scattered over the search space. The landscape is rugged and there is no significant correlation between fitness and distance of solutions, and so a local search heuristic can search a rugged plain landscape effectively and find a solution quickly. As a result, it was statistically and analytically proved that single-solution-based metaheuristics outperform population-based metaheuristics in finding the first solution of the n-queens problem.  相似文献

Owing to its inherent difficulty, many heuristic solution methods have been proposed for the capacitated minimum spanning tree problem. On the basis of recent developments, it is clear that the best metaheuristic implementations outperform classical heuristics. Unfortunately, they require long computing times and may not be very easy to implement, which explains the popularity of the Esau and Williams heuristic in practice, and the motivation behind its enhancements. Some of these enhancements involve parameters and their accuracy becomes nearly competitive with the best metaheuristics when they are tuned properly, which is usually done using a grid search within given search intervals for the parameters. In this work, we propose a genetic algorithm parameter setting procedure. Computational results show that the new method is even more accurate than an enumerative approach, and much more efficient.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to introduce several proposals for combining two metaheuristics: variable neighborhood search (VNS) and estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs). Although each of these metaheuristics has been previously hybridized in several ways, this paper constitutes the first attempt to combine both optimization methods. The different ways of combining VNS and EDAs will be classified into three groups. In the first group, we will consider combinations where the philosophy underlying VNS is embedded in EDAs. Considering different neighborhood spaces (points, populations or probability distributions), we will obtain instantiations for the approaches in this group. The second group of algorithms is obtained when probabilistic models (or any other machine learning paradigm) are used in order to exploit the good and bad shakes of the randomly generated solutions in a reduced variable neighborhood search. The last group of algorithms contains the results of alternating VNS and EDAs. An application of the first approach is presented in the protein side chain placement problem. The results obtained show the superiority of the hybrid algorithm in comparison with EDAs and VNS.  相似文献

In this paper, we focus on a real size manpower allocation problem. It was modeled after a real world problem of distributing the salesmen force over the branches of a company. The problem includes multiple objectives and the number of salesmen at each branch is unspecified. Conventional integer programming approach and conventional metaheuristics seem to have problems with solving the large size version of this problem. The versatility of our proposed heuristics based on a modification of genetic annealing is exemplified through solving the real size manpower allocation problem. For comparison sake, several small sized versions were solved using our method, conventional integer programming approach, and some well known metaheuristics.  相似文献

In this paper, we present beam search heuristics for the single machine scheduling problem with quadratic earliness and tardiness costs, and no machine idle time. These heuristics include classic beam search procedures, as well as filtered and recovering algorithms. We consider three dispatching heuristics as evaluation functions, in order to analyse the effect of different rules on the performance of the beam search procedures. The computational results show that using better dispatching heuristics improves the effectiveness of the beam search algorithms. The performance of the several heuristics is similar for instances with low variability. For high variability instances, however, the detailed, filtered and recovering beam search (RBS) procedures clearly outperform the best existing heuristic. The detailed beam search algorithm performs quite well, and is recommended for small- to medium-sized instances. For larger instances, however, this procedure requires excessive computation times, and the RBS algorithm then becomes the heuristic of choice.  相似文献

In this paper we revisit an existing dynamic programming algorithm for finding optimal subtrees in edge weighted trees. This algorithm was sketched by Maffioli in a technical report in 1991. First, we adapt this algorithm for the application to trees that can have both node and edge weights. Second, we extend the algorithm such that it does not only deliver the values of optimal trees, but also the trees themselves. Finally, we use our extended algorithm for developing heuristics for the k-cardinality tree problem in undirected graphs G with node and edge weights. This NP-hard problem consists of finding in the given graph a tree with exactly k edges such that the sum of the node and the edge weights is minimal. In order to show the usefulness of our heuristics we conduct an extensive computational analysis that concerns most of the existing problem instances. Our results show that with growing problem size the proposed heuristics reach the performance of state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Therefore, this study can be seen as a cautious note on the scaling of metaheuristics.  相似文献
