A new set of area functions for vowels has been obtained with magnetic resonance imaging from the same speaker as that previously reported in 1996 [Story et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 100, 537-554 (1996)]. The new area functions were derived from image data collected in 2002, whereas the previously reported area functions were based on magnetic resonance images obtained in 1994. When compared, the new area function sets indicated a tendency toward a constricted pharyngeal region and expanded oral cavity relative to the previous set. Based on calculated formant frequencies and sensitivity functions, these morphological differences were shown to have the primary acoustic effect of systematically shifting the second formant (F2) downward in frequency. Multiple instances of target vocal tract shapes from a specific speaker provide additional sampling of the possible area functions that may be produced during speech production. This may be of benefit for understanding intraspeaker variability in vowel production and for further development of speech synthesizers and speech models that utilize area function information.  相似文献

This work addresses the problem of online reconstruction of dynamic magnetic resonance images (MRI). The proposed method reconstructs the difference between the images of previous and current time frames. This difference image is modeled as a rank deficient matrix and is solved from the partially sampled k-space data via nuclear norm minimization. Our proposed method has been compared against state-of-the-art offline and online reconstruction methods. Our method has similar reconstruction accuracy as the offline method and significantly higher accuracy compared to the online technique. It is about an order of magnitude faster than the online technique compared against. Our experimental data consisted of dynamic MRI data that were collected at 6 to 7 frames per second and having resolutions of 128×128 and 256×256 pixels per frame. Experimental evaluation indicates that our proposed method is capable of reconstructing 128×128 images at the rate of 4 frames per second and 256×256 images at the rate of 2 frames per second. The previous online method requires about 3.75 s for reconstructing each image. The improvement in reconstruction speed is clearly discernible. Moreover, our method has a reconstruction error that is about half that of the previous online method.  相似文献

In hyperpolarized (HP) noble-gas magnetic resonance imaging, large nuclear spin polarizations, about 100,000 times that ordinarily obtainable at thermal equilibrium, are created in 3He and 129Xe. The enhanced signal that results can be employed in high-resolution MRI studies of void spaces such as in the lungs. In HP gas MRI the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) depends only weakly on the static magnetic field (B(0)), making very low-field (VLF) MRI possible; indeed, it is possible to contemplate portable MRI using light-weight solenoids or permanent magnets. This article reports the first in vivo VLF MR images of the lungs in humans and in rats, obtained at a field of only 15 millitesla (150 Gauss).  相似文献

This paper announces the availability of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) subset of the mngu0 corpus, a collection of articulatory speech data from one speaker containing different modalities. This subset comprises volumetric MRI scans of the speaker's vocal tract during sustained production of vowels and consonants, as well as dynamic mid-sagittal scans of repetitive consonant-vowel (CV) syllable production. For reference, high-quality acoustic recordings of the speech material are also available. The raw data are made freely available for research purposes.  相似文献

In U-shaped, hand-size magnetic resonance surface scanners, imaging is performed along only one spatial direction, with the application of just one gradient (one-dimensional imaging). Lateral spatial resolution can be obtained by magnet displacement, but, in this case, resolution is very poor (on the order of some millimeters) and cannot be useful for high-resolution imaging applications. In this article, an innovative technique for acquisition and reconstruction of images produced by U-shaped, hand-size MRI surface scanners is presented. The proposed method is based on the acquisition of overlapping strips and an analytical reconstruction technique; it is capable of arbitrarily improving spatial lateral resolution without either using a second magnetic field gradient or making any assumptions about the imaged sample extension. Numerical simulations on synthetic images are reported demonstrating the method functionalities. The presented method also makes it possible to use U-shaped, hand-size MRI surface scanners for high-resolution biomedical applications, such as the imaging of skin lesions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the validity of MR imaging (MRI) in the assessment of stress-related injuries to bone.MR images of 50 military recruits (8 females and 42 males; 18-27 (mean 20) years of age) were retrospectively evaluated twice for stress injuries to bone by 4 radiologists (2 musculoskeletal radiologists, 2 radiology residents). Coronal T1-weighed (T1W) and STIR images, as well as axial and coronal T2-weighted (T2W) fat-suppressed images were taken using a 1.0T scanner. Rates for sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of MRI of the stress-related injuries were calculated. Intraobserver and interobserver agreement was determined with kappa statistics.Rates for MRI sensitivity were 27-96%, for specificity 65-100%, and for diagnostic accuracy 58-97%. Lowest rates were seen when reading T1W images and highest when reading STIR images. Readers showed moderate to excellent intraobserver agreement (kappa 0.75-0.95). Interobserver agreement was fair to excellent (kappa 0.41-0.91), and the lowest values were seen in the interpretation of T1W images. Normal findings could be differentiated from various grades of stress injury to bone.MRI is a valid means of revealing the presence of stress injuries to bone and their staging. Observer agreement is good to excellent when using T2W images and STIR images, while T1W images are of lesser value.  相似文献

This letter describes a data acquisition setup for recording, and processing, running speech from a person in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. The main focus is on ensuring synchronicity between image and audio acquisition, and in obtaining good signal to noise ratio to facilitate further speech analysis and modeling. A field-programmable gate array based hardware design for synchronizing the scanner image acquisition to other external data such as audio is described. The audio setup itself features two fiber optical microphones and a noise-canceling filter. Two noise cancellation methods are described including a novel approach using a pulse sequence specific model of the gradient noise of the MRI scanner. The setup is useful for scientific speech production studies. Sample results of speech and singing data acquired and processed using the proposed method are given.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relative contributions of water content and non-equilibrium cooling and warming rates to the survival of cryopreserved axes of recalcitrant P. trifoliata seeds. Reducing water contents from 1.7 and 0.26 g water per g dry mass is believed to increase cytoplasmic viscosity. Cooling to -196 degree C was done at rates averaging between 0.17 and 1300 degree C per second, and warming at 600 or 1.35 degree C per second. Survival was assessed after 4 weeks in vitro. Rapid warming resulted in higher survival and normal development of axes at all water contents. The effects of cooling rate were dependent on the water content of axes. Cooling rates resulting in >70 percent normal development ranged between 0.17 and about 1300 degree C per second for axes at a water content of 0.26 g water per g dry mass narrowing with increasing hydration to an apparent optimum at about 686 degree C per second in axes at 0.8 g water per g dry mass At 1.7 g water per g dry mass, axes cooled at 0.17 degree C per second yielded nearly 40 percent normal development, whereas faster cooling was deleterious. Results are interpreted in the context of the effect of water content on cytoplasmic viscosity and the rate of intracellular ice formation. At low water contents, the high intracellular viscosity slows ice crystallization making survival independent of cooling rate. At higher water contents, the reduced viscosity requires faster cooling to prevent ice crystal damage. The ability to cool rapidly with increasing hydration is balanced with an increasing limitation to dissipate heat fast enough to prevent severe damage.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of articulation rate and speaking style on the perceived speech rate is investigated. The articulation rate is measured both in terms of the intended phones, i.e., phones present in the assumed canonical form, and as the number of actual, realized phones per second. The combination of these measures reflects the deletion of phones, which is related to speaking style. The effect of the two rate measures on the perceived speech rate is compared in two listening experiments on the basis of a set of intonation phrases with carefully balanced intended and realized phone rates, selected from a German database of spontaneous speech. Because the balance between input-oriented (effort) and output-oriented (communicative) constraints may be different at fast versus slow speech rates, the effect of articulation rate is compared both for fast and for slow phrases from the database. The effect of the listeners' own speaking habits is also investigated to evaluate if listeners' perception is based on a projection of their own behavior as a speaker. It is shown that listener judgments reflect both the intended and realized phone rates, and that their judgments are independent of the constraint balance and their own speaking habits.  相似文献

Interactions among the multiple channels of a cochlear prosthesis limit the number of channels of information that can be transmitted to the brain. This study explored the influence on channel interactions of electrical pulse rates and temporal offsets between channels. Anesthetized guinea pigs were implanted with 2-channel scala-tympani electrode arrays, and spike activity was recorded from the auditory cortex. Channel interactions were quantified as the reduction of the threshold for pulse-train stimulation of the apical channel by sub-threshold stimulation of the basal channel. Pulse rates were 254 or 4069 pulses per second (pps) per channel. Maximum threshold reductions averaged 9.6 dB when channels were stimulated simultaneously. Among nonsimultaneous conditions, threshold reductions at the 254-pps rate were entirely eliminated by a 1966-micros inter-channel offset. When offsets were only 41 to 123 micros, however, maximum threshold shifts averaged 3.1 dB, which was comparable to the dynamic ranges of cortical neurons in this experimental preparation. Threshold reductions at 4069 pps averaged up to 1.3 dB greater than at 254 pps, which raises some concern in regard to high-pulse-rate speech processors. Thresholds for various paired-pulse stimuli, pulse rates, and pulse-train durations were measured to test possible mechanisms of temporal integration.  相似文献

This paper examines whether correlations between speech perception and speech production exist, and, if so, whether they might provide a way of evaluating different acoustic metrics. The cues listeners use for many phonemic distinctions are not known, often because many different acoustic cues are highly correlated with one another, making it difficult to distinguish among them. Perception-production correlations may provide a new means of doing so. In the present paper, correlations were examined between acoustic measures taken on listeners' perceptual prototypes for a given speech category and on their average production of members of that category. Significant correlations were found for VOT among stop consonants, and for spectral peaks (but not centroids or skewness) for voiceless fricatives. These results suggest that correlations between speech perception and production may provide a methodology for evaluating different proposed acoustic metrics.  相似文献

SNAPSHOT-FLASH is a recently developed, ultrafast imaging technique, based on conventional FLASH imaging. The application of this new variant to 3D imaging allows the acquisition of a 128 x 128 x 32 data set in 12.5 seconds without triggering, or for cardiac imaging with gating within 32 heartbeats. Compared to standard 3D-FLASH this is 128 times faster, because triggering is only required when the 3D phase-encoding gradient is incremented. The method depicts for the first time fast three-dimensional views of the human heart without motional artifacts. The images are spin-density weighted. Using suitable prepulses any desired T1- or T2-contrast may be achieved. The generation of 3D movies is possible without an increase of the total scan time.  相似文献

We present a method to obtain MRI amplitude images that can picture the magnetic field due to arbitrary shaped magnetized objects. The method employees the gradient recalled echo sequence and two sets of data obtained in separate experiments, one of which provides a phase reference image making it possible to eliminate the effect of theB0field inhomogeneities. The final magnitude images have a good signal-to-noise even at low fields, and provide qualitative as well as quantitative information about the magnetic field produced by the ferromagnetic object. As an example the method is applied to study the field produced by a small metal piece in a 500-G scanner, and the experimental results are compared with numerical simulations.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Ultrahigh-field MRI at 8 T offers unprecedented resolution for imaging brain structures and microvasculature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to apply high-resolution MRI for stroke imaging and to characterize findings at 1.5 and 8 T. METHODS: Seventeen subjects with minor ischemic infarcts were studied using T2-weighted gradient echo (GE) and rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement (RARE) images at 8 T with resolution up to 200 microm. In 10 subjects, T1- and T2-weighted fast spin echo (FSE) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images were also acquired at 1.5-T MRI. RESULTS: The 8-T images showed infarcts as sharply demarcated areas of high-signal intensity (n=21) and revealed more infarctions than 1.5-T images (n=14) (P<.003). The low-signal intensity areas that surrounded infarctions were suggestive of hemosiderin deposits. The 8-T characteristics of microvessels terminating within the infractions were distinct from normal vasculature. The 8-T images revealed an angioma at the site of a second stroke, not apparent on 1.5-T images. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrahigh-field MRI at 8 T is feasible for stroke imaging. The 8-T MRI visualized infarcts and microvasculature with high resolution, revealing infarcts and vascular pathologies that were not apparent at 1.5 T.  相似文献

In this article we will describe our recent experiments on the estimation of vocal tract area functions from transient acoustical measurements at the lips. Since the theoretical basis for such measurements has been discussed in several earlier publications we will concentrate on the measurement technique and the numerical procedures used to estimate the area functions from the measurements. The two main accomplishments we will report on are (1) We are now able to make measurements and compute and display the area function about 18 times per second. Such a display, which has not been possible before, allow one to visualize the shape of one's vocal tract as one changes the position of one's articulators. This display could form the basis of a visual aid for the improvement of the speech of profoundly deaf persons. (2) We have synthesized intelligible though not yet high quality speech from several sentence-length sequences of measured area functions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance of continuous speech synthesized from direct measurements of area functions.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique enables non-invasive analysis of the human vocal tract during phonation. Creation of MR images of the vocal tract is accompanied by simultaneous recording of the produced speech. The paper analyzes and compares spectral properties of an acoustical noise produced by mechanical vibration of the gradient coils during scanning in the open-air MRI equipment working in a weak magnetic field with low B0 up to 0.2 T. This noise exhibits harmonic character, so it is suitable to analyze its properties in the spectral domain. Obtained results of spectral analysis will be used to devise a new cepstral-based filtering method for noise suppression of recorded speech.  相似文献

The problem of interfacing a low cost microcomputer—the Commodore 3032—to external devices is reviewed. The essential features of a general purpose interface unit are described and an explanation is given, in general terms, of how this unit can be used to transfer digitised samples of audio signals to 3032 user memory for software processing. A specific system is described which allows sampling and storage at rates of up to 71 kbytes per second for a single channel and up to 43 kbytes × 2 per second for two channels. More than two channels can be sampled at correspondingly lower rates. Some possible applications are indicated.  相似文献

In this article, we propose batch-type learning vector quantization (LVQ) segmentation techniques for the magnetic resonance (MR) images. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) segmentation is an important technique to differentiate abnormal and normal tissues in MR image data. The proposed LVQ segmentation techniques are compared with the generalized Kohonen's competitive learning (GKCL) methods, which were proposed by Lin et al. [Magn Reson Imaging 21 (2003) 863-870]. Three MRI data sets of real cases are used in this article. The first case is from a 2-year-old girl who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma in her left eye. The second case is from a 55-year-old woman who developed complete left side oculomotor palsy immediately after a motor vehicle accident. The third case is from an 84-year-old man who was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease (AD). Our comparisons are based on sensitivity of algorithm parameters, the quality of MRI segmentation with the contrast-to-noise ratio and the accuracy of the region of interest tissue. Overall, the segmentation results from batch-type LVQ algorithms present good accuracy and quality of the segmentation images, and also flexibility of algorithm parameters in all the comparison consequences. The results support that the proposed batch-type LVQ algorithms are better than the previous GKCL algorithms. Specifically, the proposed fuzzy-soft LVQ algorithm works well in segmenting AD MRI data set to accurately measure the hippocampus volume in AD MR images.  相似文献
