Cycle Time Distribution (CTD) plays a critical role for determining uniformity of particle coating in spray fluidized beds. However, the CTD is influenced by both geometrical structure and operating conditions of fluidized bed. In this study, a spray fluidized bed of coating process is simulated by a comprehensive Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Model (CFD-DEM). To achieve different behaviors of CTD, some modifications are designed on a pseudo-2D internally circulating fluidized bed, which traditionally composes of a high-velocity upward bed and low-velocity downward bed. These modifications include making the air distributor slope and/or laying a baffle in the downward bed. First, the CTD and evolution of particle size distribution under different bed structures are compared. The CTD directly influences the coating uniformity. By making the particles flowing along a parallel direction in the downward bed through the geometrical modifications, the CTD becomes narrower and the coating uniformity is significantly improved. Second, under the optimized bed structure, the influence of operating conditions on the coating uniformity is studied. Properly increasing the fluidization gas velocity and the fluidization gas temperature and reducing the liquid spray rate can improve the coating uniformity.  相似文献

The minimum fluidization velocity (Umf) is a key parameter for the scale-up of inverse liquid–solid fluidized beds. Theoretical predictions using common correlations were compared against experimental minimum fluidization velocity measurements of low density (28–638 kg/m3), 0.80–1.13 mm Styrofoam particles in a fluidized bed with a height of 4.5 m and 0.2 m diameter. The average absolute relative deviation for the predicted minimum fluidization velocity for particles below 300 kg/m3 was above 40% using the studied common correlations. A modified Wen and Yu correlation was thus proposed based on novel and past measurements with low-density and small-diameter particles, expanding the range for predicting Umf. The new correlation predicted Umf with deviations below 15% for ST028, ST122 and ST300. This modified correlation also improved Umf predictions for comparable particles from a previous study, demonstrating its validity for a larger range of low-density particles.  相似文献

The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular gas-driven inverse liquid-solid fluidized bed (GDFB) using particles of different diameters and densities were investigated in detail. Rising gas bubbles cause a liquid upflow in the riser portion, enabling a liquid downflow that causes an inverse fluidization in the downer portion. Four flow regimes (fixed bed regime, initial fluidization regime, complete fluidization regime, and circulating fluidization regime) and three transition gas velocities (initial fluidization gas velocity, minimum fluidization gas velocity, and circulating fluidization gas velocity) were identified via visual observation and by monitoring the variations in the pressure drop. The axial local bed voidage (ε) of the downer first decreases and then increases with the increase of the gas velocity. Both the liquid circulation velocity and the average particle velocity inside the downer increase with the increase of the gas velocity in the riser, but decrease with the particle loading. An empirical formula was proposed to successfully predict the Richardson-Zaki index “n”, and the predicted ε obtained from this formula has a ±5% relative error when compared with the experimental ε.  相似文献

A CFD-DEM reaction coupling model was established to simulate UF4 fluorination process, in which heat and mass transfer, heterogeneous chemical reaction, and particle shrinkage model were considered. The gas behavior was described by the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. The solid phase is modeled with the discrete element method, considering the gas–solid interphase force, contact force, heat transfer, and chemical reaction models based on the discretized surface. Each particle can be individually tracked and associated with specific physical properties. The proposed CFD-DEM reaction coupling model based on particle shrinking reaction model with discretized surface was validated by the experimental and literature results at first. Then a multistage conical spouted bed was proposed and the process of UF4 fluoridation reaction in it was investigated. The fluidization characteristics and the concentration distribution of gaseous products in the spouted bed with an extended gas velocity range were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the effects of different parameters, such as superficial gas velocity, temperature, fluorine concentration, on fluoridation rate and the fluorine conversion rate were investigated based on the proposed CFD-DEM reaction coupling model. The results obtained in this work are beneficial for method development of the chemical reaction simulation research in particle scale using the CFD-DEM model, and useful for operation and equipment parameters design of the uranium tetrafluoride fluorinate industrial process in the future.  相似文献

Computational Fluid Dynamics coupled with Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) is a commonly used numerical method to model gas-solid flow in fluidised beds and other multiphase systems. A significant limitation of CFD-DEM is the feasibility of the realistic simulation of large numbers of particles. Coarse-graining (CG) approaches, through which groups of multiple individual particles are represented by single, larger particles, can substantially reduce the total number of particles while maintaining similar system dynamics. As these three CG models have not previously been compared, there remains some debate, however, about the best practice in the application of CG in CFD-DEM simulations. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of three typical CG methods based on simulations of a bubbling fluidised bed. This is achieved through the use of a numerical validation framework, which makes full use of the high-resolution 3D positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) measurements to rigorously validate the outputs of CFD-DEM simulations conducted using various different coarse-graining models, and various different degrees of coarse-graining. The particle flow behaviours in terms of the particle occupancy field, velocity field, circulation time, and bubble size and velocity, are comprehensively analysed. It is shown that the CG simulation starts to fail when the size ratio between the bed chamber and the particles decreases to approximately 20. It is also observed, somewhat surprisingly, that the specific CG approach applied to interparticle contact parameters does not have a substantial effect on the simulation results for the bubbling bed simulations across a wide range of CG factors.  相似文献

In this paper, the pressure fluctuation in a fluidized bed was measured and processed via standard deviation and power spectrum analysis to investigate the dynamic behavior of the transition from the bubbling to turbulent regime. Two types (Geldart B and D) of non-spherical particles, screened from real bed materials, and their mixture were used as the bed materials. The experiments were conducted in a semi-industrial testing apparatus. The experimental results indicated that the fluidization characteristics of the non-spherical Geldart D particles differed from that of the spherical particles at gas velocities beyond the transition velocity Uc. The standard deviation of the pressure fluctuation measured in the bed increased with the gas velocity, while that measured in the plenum remained constant. Compared to the coarse particles, the fine particles exerted a stronger influence on the dynamic behavior of the fluidized bed and promoted the fluidization regime transition from bubbling toward turbulent. The power spectrum of the pressure fluctuation was calculated using the auto-regressive (AR) model; the hydrodynamics of the fluidized bed were characterized by the major frequency of the power spectrum of the pressure fluctuation. By combining the standard deviation analysis, a new method was proposed to determine the transition velocity Uk via the analysis of the change in the major frequency. The first major frequency was observed to vary within the range of 1.5 to 3 Hz.  相似文献

This paper examines the suitability of various drag models for predicting the hydrodynamics of the turbulent fluidization of FCC particles on the Fluent V6.2 platform. The drag models included those of Syamlal–O’Brien, Gidaspow, modified Syamlal–O’Brien, and McKeen. Comparison between experimental data and simulated results showed that the Syamlal–O’Brien, Gidaspow, and modified Syamlal–O’Brien drag models highly overestimated gas–solid momentum exchange and could not predict the formation of dense phase in the fluidized bed, while the McKeen drag model could not capture the dilute characteristics due to underestimation of drag force. The standard Gidaspow drag model was then modified by adopting the effective particle cluster diameter to account for particle clusters, which was, however, proved inapplicable for FCC particle turbulent fluidization. A four-zone drag model (dense phase, sub-dense phase, sub-dilute phase and dilute phase) was finally proposed to calculate the gas–solid exchange coefficient in the turbulent fluidization of FCC particles, and was validated by satisfactory agreement between prediction and experiment.  相似文献

Most existing models for predicting bubble size and bubble frequency have been developed for freely bubbling fluidized beds. Accurate prediction of bubbling behavior in deep fluidized beds, however, has been a challenge due to the higher degree of bubble coalescence and break up, high probability of the slugging regime, partial fluidization, and chaotic behavior in the bubbling regime. In this work, the bubbling and fluidization behavior of potash particles was investigated in a deep fluidized bed employing a twin-plane electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) system. Solid volume fraction, average bubble velocity, average bubble diameter, and bubble frequency in both bubbling and slugging regimes were measured at two different bed height ratios (H/D = 3.5 and H/D = 3.78). This work is the first to illustrate a sequential view of bubbles at different superficial gas velocities in a fluidized bed. The results show that both the bubble diameter and rising velocity increased with increasing the superficial gas velocity for the two bed heights, with larger values observed in the deeper bed compared to the shallower one. Predicted values for bubble diameter, bubble rise velocity and bubble frequency from different models are compared with the experimental data obtained from the ECT system in this work. Good agreement has been achieved between the values predicted by the previous models and the experimental data for the bubble diameter and bubble rise velocity with an average absolute deviation of 16% and 15% for the bed height of 49 cm and 13% and 8% for the bed height of 53 cm, respectively.  相似文献

Static electricity has an important effect on gas–solid fluidized bed reactor fluidization performance. In the process of fluidization, electrostatic interaction between particles will obviously accelerate particle agglomerate formation, which consequently reduces the fluidization performance. Pulsed gas flow injection is an efficient method to enhance particle mixing, thereby weakening the occurrence of particle agglomerate. In this study, the two-dimensional hybrid pulsed fluidized bed is established. The flow characteristics are studied by using the coupled CFD-DEM numerical simulation model considering electrostatic effects. Influences of different pulsed frequencies and gas flow ratios on fluidized bed fluidization performance are investigated to obtain the optimal pulsed gas flow condition. Results show that in the presence of static electricity, the bubble generation position is lower, which is conducive to the particle flow. Pulsed gas flow can increase the particle velocity and improve the diffusion ability. The bubble generation time is different at different frequencies, and the frequency of 2.5 Hz has the most obvious effect on the flow characteristics. Different gas flow ratios have significant impacts on the particle movement amplitude. When the pulse gas flow accounts for a large ratio, the particle agglomerate tends to be larger. Therefore, in order to improve the fluidization effect, the ratio of pulsed gas flow to stable gas flow should be appropriately reduced to 0.5 or less.  相似文献

Until now,the onset velocity of circulating fluidization in liquid-solid fluidized beds has been defined by the turning point of the time required to empty a bed of particles as a function of the superficial liquid velocity, and is reported to be only dependent on the liquid and particle properties. This study presents a new approach to calculate the onset velocity using CFD-DEM simulation of the particle residence time distribution(RTD).The onset velocity is identified from the intersection of the fitted lines of the particle mean residence time as a function of superficial liquid velocity. Our results are in reasonable agreement with experimental data. The simulation indicates that the onset velocity is influenced by the density and size of particles and weakly affected by riser height and diameter.A power-law function is proposed to correlate the mean particle residence time with the superficial liquid velocity. The collisional parameters have a minor effect on the mean residence time of particles and the onset velocity, but influence the particle RTD,showing some humps and trailing. The particle RTD is found to be related to the particle trajectories, which may indicate the complex flow structure and underlying mechanisms of the particle RTD.  相似文献

The behavior of the solid phase in the upper zone of a circulating fluidized bed riser was studied using a phase Doppler anemometer. Glass particles of mean diameter 107 μm and superficial gas velocities Ug covering the turbulent and the beginning of the fast fluidization regime were investigated. Three static bed heights were tested. Ascending and descending particles were found co-existing under all operating conditions tested, and at all measurement locations. Superficial gas velocity proved/happened to have a larger effect on descending particles at the wall and on ascending particles in the central region. Transversal particle velocities in both directions (toward the center and toward the wall) behaved relatively equivalently, with only slight difference observed at the wall. However, observation of the number of particles moving in either transversal direction showed a change in bed structure when increasing Ug. Furthermore, a balance was constantly observed between the core zone and the annulus zone where the mutual mass transfer between these two zones occurred continuously. Transition from a slow to a fast particle motion was accompanied by a transition to high levels of velocity fluctuations, and was found corresponding to the appearance of significant solid particle flow rate.  相似文献

This paper investigated the effect of Gaussian distribution width, average particle diameter, particle loading, and the tapered angle on minimum fluidization velocity (Umf) by conducting extensive experiments in tapered fluidized beds. Three powders with Gaussian size distribution and different distribution widths were used in the experiments. An increase in Umf with increasing the average particle diameter, particle loading, and the tapered angle was observed. There was also a nonmonotonic behavior of Umf as the Gaussian distribution width increased. An empirical correlation including dimensionless groups for predicting Umf in tapered beds was developed in which the effect of distribution width was considered. The proposed correlation predictions were in good agreement with the experimental data, with a maximum deviation of 16.5% and average and standard deviations of, respectively, 6.4% and 7.4%. The proposed correlation was also compared with three earlier models, and their accuracy was discussed.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated scale-up of the residence-time distribution (RTD) of particles in bubbling fluidized beds (BFBs) with continuous particle flow. Two approaches were investigated in this study: first, using well-known scaling laws that require changes in particle properties and gas velocity; second, using a simple approach keeping the same particles and gas velocity for different beds. Our theoretical analysis indicates it is possible to obtain similar RTDs in different BFBs with scaling laws if the plug-flow residence time (tplug) is changed as m0.5, where m is the scaling ratio of the bed; however, neither approach can ensure similar RTDs if tplug is kept invariant. To investigate RTD variations using two approaches without changing tplug, we performed experiments in three BFBs. The derivatives dE(θ)/ (where E(θ) is the dimensionless RTD density function and θ is the dimensionless time) in the early stage of the RTDs always varied with m−1, which was attributed to the fact that the particle movement in the early stage were mainly subject to dispersion. Using the simple approach, we obtained similar RTDs by separately treating the RTDs in the early and post-stages. This approach guarantees RTD similarity and provides basic rules for designing BFBs.  相似文献

The fluidization state in the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is crucial to its stable and safe operation. However, up to now, the research field has not reached unanimity on whether the fluidization regime that the upper furnace of the boiler operates in is the fast fluidization or pneumatic transport. To this end, this paper reviewed relevant research on the transition between the fast fluidization and pneumatic transport of Geldart group B particles, including the flow characteristics of the fast fluidization, the transition condition between the fast fluidization and pneumatic transport, the determination methods of the transport velocity utr and saturation carrying capacity Gs1 and the influencing factors on these two parameters. Previous research findings can provide certain guidelines for the design and optimization of the CFB boiler, and result in plenty of prediction correlations for utr and Gs1. Nonetheless, owing to insufficient data available on Geldart group B particles, especially the ones obtained under high temperature or pressure conditions and in large-scale CFB apparatuses, the existing correlations are not well suited for the prediction of utr and Gs1 of Geldart group B particles. Thus, further efforts are urgently demanded on the fast fluidization transition of Geldart group B particles.  相似文献

The hydrodynamic behaviour of the spouted bed in the pharmaceutical industries has been found to be less addressed. The present paper has focused on the hydrodynamic characteristics of a spouted bed where the Cellets™ (Ph.Eur./USP) is adopted as the bed material. Experiments are carried out with three different static bed heights (H0) of shallow depth (2Di ≤ H0 < 3Di) using two different particle sizes. The spouted bed employed with Di/D0 of 5 has given the experimental information on external spouting (Ues) by mapping the pressure drop, and fountain height (Hf) against the superficial gas velocity (Ug) is represented with the image contours, which show the intrinsic behaviour. All the 1000 μm and 700 μm particles have been found to exhibit symmetric and asymmetric spouting. With increasing Ug, the fully suspended particles are limited to a certain height in the freeboard region due to the gas-solid cross-flow, which implies the clusters have identified with the image processing method.  相似文献

An experimental study on unsteady two phase flow is conducted in a vertical shock tube. Shock Mach numbers range from 1.3 to 1.5 in 1 bar. The particles are initially positioned in horizontal beds of various thicknesses. Our research covers a large domain of void fraction from 1 (single particles) to 0.35 (compact beds). The experiments provide shadowgraph images for the recording of particle trajectories (effect of the gas on the particles) and side-wall pressures (action of the particles on the gas). A dense two phase flow model has been elaborated and numerically solved using a finite difference scheme with pseudoviscosity. The simulated shock-induced fluidization of a 2 cm thick bed of 1.5 mm diameter glass particles is compared to the experiment. Received 10 September 1996 / Accepted 4 January 1997  相似文献

Accurate information concerning riser inventory in a fluidized bed is required in some applications such as the calcium looping process, because it is related to the CO2 capture efficiency of the system. In a circulating fluidized bed (CFB), the riser inventory is normally calculated from the riser pressure drop; however, the friction and the acceleration phenomena may have a significant influence on the total riser pressure drop. Therefore, deviation may occur in the calculation from the actual mass. For this reason the magnitude of the friction and the acceleration pressure drop in the entire riser is studied in small-scale risers. Two series of studies were performed: the first one in a scaled cold model riser of the 10 kWth facility, and the second one in the 10 kWth fluidized bed riser under process conditions. The velocities were chosen to comply with the fluidization regimes suitable for the calcium looping process, namely, the turbulent and the fast. In cold-model experiments in a low-velocity turbulent fluidization regime, the actual weight (static pressure drop) of the particles is observed more than the weight calculated from a recorded pressure drop. This phenomenon is also repeated in pilot plant conditions. In the cold-model setup, the friction and acceleration pressure drop became apparent in the fast fluidization regime, and increased as the gas velocity rose. Within calcium looping conditions in the pilot plant operation, the static pressure drop was observed more than the recorded pressure drop. Therefore, as a conservative approach, the influence of friction pressure drop may be neglected while calculating the solid inventory of the riser. The concept of transit inventory is introduced as a fraction of total inventory, which lies in freefall zones of the CFB system. This fraction increases as gas velocity rises.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the influence of different coal mass fraction in an air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB). The effect of the low density particles layer on heavy sedimentation increased with increasing material layer thickness. The thickness of the low density particles layer also affected the final settling time of the high density particles. Increasing the thickness of the low density particles layer by Δh provoked an increase in the settling of high density particles that was related to their diameter (Δh/D). The pressure gradient across the bed was lower than that observed for the control experiment, which had only the dense material, owing to a decrease in the pressure gradient in Zones 1 and 5 (at the top and bottom of the bed, respectively). Introducing different coal sizes resulted in different fluidization environments, particle accumulation layers, and changes to the surrounding zone. However, the influence of the coal particles on the local bed characteristics was related to its concentration. The feeding mass fraction of 6–13 mm size and 13–25 mm size coal should be limited to10% and 13%, respectively. The ranges of possible deviation were found to be 0.08–0.15 and 0.07–0.10 for the respective samples.  相似文献

Fluidized bed agglomeration is an important and challenging problem for thermal cracking in fluid cokers. A low coker temperature can be problematic because the bitumen is injected into the fluidized bed with a different viscosity, resulting in formation of agglomerates of varying sizes, which slows the cracking reactions. In the present study, the bed material agglomeration process during nozzle injection of multiviscosity liquid was investigated in a fluidized bed operated at different mass ratios of the atomization gas to the liquid jets (GLR = 1%–3.5%) and gas velocities (3.9Umf and 5.9Umf) based on a conductance method using a water–sand system to simulate the hot bitumen–coke system at room temperature. During the tests of liquid-jet dispersion throughout the bed, different agglomeration stages are observed at both gas velocities. The critical amount of tert-butanol in the liquid jets that could lead to severe agglomeration of the bed materials (poor fluidization) at GLR = 1% is about 10 wt% at the low fluidizing gas velocity (3.9Umf) and 18 wt% at the high gas velocity (5.9Umf). This study provides a new approach for on-line monitoring of bed agglomeration during liquid injection to guarantee perfect contact between the atomized liquid and the bed particles.  相似文献

Slugging represents one of the major regimes in fluidization, which occurs in small diameter beds with large bed height-to-diameter ratio or in large diameter beds with internals that resemble multiple small diameter fluidized beds. Slug types include round-nosed slug, wall slug and square-nosed slug. Studies of the slugs have been mainly focused on round-nosed or wall slugs known as half slug, typically occurring in Geldart group A particle fluidization. The square-nosed slug typically occurring for Geldart group D particles appears to be regarded as simple in its structure. The Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography (ECVT) imaging of the square-nosed slugging phenomena conducted in this study reveals otherwise. That is the structure of the square-nosed slug is, in fact, complex, particularly with respect to its dynamic variation in fluidization. More broadly, this study examines experimentally the hydrodynamic characteristics of the square-nosed fluidization regime. Specifically, simultaneous measurements from multiple ECVT sensors provide non-invasive, continuous, 3-dimensional imaging of the entire flow region of the slugging bed and hence enabling the dynamic characterization of the evolution of the slugs. The analysis of the 3D images reconstructed for real-time gas–solid volume fraction profile of the slugging fluidized bed indicates that there are three different zones, namely, the bottom fluidization zone, the gas slug zone, and the solid slug zone, co-existing in the bed. The three zones present different hydrodynamic characteristics during the slug evolution. It is found that varying the gas velocity of the slugging bed mainly varies the maximum length of the gas slug zone, while it only has a minor effect on the lengths of the bottom fluidization zone and solid slug zone. It also has an insignificant effect on the solid volume fraction of the three zones.  相似文献
