Poly(sodium(2‐sulfamate‐3‐carboxylate)isoprene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(sodium(2‐sulfamate‐1‐carboxylate)isoprene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) double hydrophilic block copolymers were prepared by selective post polymerization reaction of the polyisoprene block, of poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) diblocks or poly(ethylene oxide‐b‐isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) triblock precursors, with N‐chlorosulfonyl isocyanate. The precursors were synthesized by anionic polymerization high vacuum techniques and had narrow molecular weight distributions and predictable molecular weights and compositions. The resulting double hydrophilic block copolymers were characterized by FTIR and potentiometric titrations in terms of the incorporated functional groups. Their properties in aqueous solutions were studied by viscometry and dynamic light scattering. The latter techniques revealed a complex dilute solution behavior of the novel block copolymers, resulting from the polyelectrolyte character of the functionalized PI block and showing a dependence on solution ionic strength and pH. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(isoprene) (PEO‐b‐PI) diblock copolymers were prepared by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of isoprene from alkoxyamine‐terminal poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). PEO monomethyl ether (Mn ≈ 5200 g/mol) was functionalized by esterification with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide with subsequent copper‐mediated replacement of the terminal bromine with 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐nitroxide. The resulting PEO‐alkoxyamine macroinitiator was used to initiate polymerization of isoprene in bulk and in solution at 125 °C to yield PEO‐b‐PI block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). Polymerizations were first order in isoprene through 35% conversion. Micellar aggregates of PEO‐b‐PI in aqueous solution were crosslinked by treatment with a water‐soluble redox initiating system, and persistent micellar structures were observed in the dry state by AFM. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Controlled/"living" polymerizations and tandem polymerization methodologies offer enticing opportunities to enchain a wide variety of monomers into new, functional block copolymer materials with unusual physical properties. However, the use of these synthetic methods often introduces nontrivial molecular weight polydispersities, a type of chain length heterogeneity, into one or more of the copolymer blocks. While the self-assembly behavior of monodisperse AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers is both experimentally and theoretically well understood, the effects of broadening the copolymer molecular weight distribution on block copolymer phase behavior are less well-explored. We report the melt-phase self-assembly behavior of SBS triblock copolymers (S = poly(styrene) and B = poly(1,4-butadiene)) comprised of a broad polydispersity B block (M(w)/M(n) = 1.73-2.00) flanked by relatively narrow dispersity S blocks (M(w)/M(n) = 1.09-1.36), in order to identify the effects of chain length heterogeneity on block copolymer self-assembly. Based on synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy analyses of seventeen SBS triblock copolymers with poly(1,4-butadiene) volume fractions 0.27 ≤ f(B) ≤ 0.82, we demonstrate that polydisperse SBS triblock copolymers self-assemble into periodic structures with unexpectedly enhanced stabilities that greatly exceed those of equivalent monodisperse copolymers. The unprecedented stabilities of these polydisperse microphase separated melts are discussed in the context of a complete morphology diagram for this system, which demonstrates that narrow dispersity copolymers are not required for periodic nanoscale assembly.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) triblock and diblock amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized from poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether, respectively. The hydroxyl groups of PEG readily react with 2-(1-octadecenyl) succinic anhydride (OSA) at 140 °C through ring-opening reaction of the succinic anhydride. Both the PEG-OSA diblock and triblock copolymers are produced without use of any solvent or catalyst. The molecular structure of the copolymers was characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, and the thermal properties by DSC. The behavior of the copolymers in selective and nonselective solvents was studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy in deuterium oxide and d-chloroform. The aggregation of the polymers in water was studied with a particle size analyzer and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) in bright field mode. The results show that the hydrophobic C18 chain with intramolecular succinic anhydride linker can be attached to the hydrophilic PEG chain, an ester bond forming between the blocks. The copolymers exhibit flexible, liquid-like hydrophobic blocks even in water, which is a nonsolvent for OSA. PEG-OSA block copolymers self-organize in water, forming micellar polymer aggregates in nanoscale.  相似文献

Nonionic water-soluble poly(acrylamide)s and poly(acrylate)s were synthesized by RAFT and ATRP methods. Similar to the synthesized poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly(N-acryloylpyrrolidine), aqueous solutions of statistical acrylate copolymers bearing two different oligo(ethylene oxide) side chains showed a sharp clouding transition upon heating beyond characteristic temperatures. The temperature of the cloud point can be easily fine tuned by the copolymer composition. As for poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly(N-acryloylpyrrolidine), the cloud-point temperatures of these statistical copolymers are rather insensitive to changes in the molar mass or the NaCl content of the solutions. Also, ternary triblock copolymers containing one permanently hydrophilic block and two different thermoresponsive blocks were synthesized, varying the block sequence systematically. Their aggregation in aqueous solution was followed by turbidimetry and dynamic light scattering. Depending on the heating process and the triblock sequence, micellar aggregates of 40 to 600 nm size were found. The thermally induced aggregation behavior depends sensitively on the block sequence but is also subject to major kinetic effects. For certain block sequences, a thermally induced two-step association is observed when heating beyond the first and second cloud points of the thermoresponsive blocks. However, the thermal-transition temperatures of the block polymers can differ from the thermal-transition temperatures of the individual homopolymers. This may be caused by end-group effects but also by mutual interactions of the different blocks in solution, as physical mixtures of the homopolymers exhibit deviations from a purely additive thermal behavior.  相似文献

The self-aggregation behavior of two amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate]-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PHB-PEO) triblock copolymer samples with nearly identical PHB block lengths but different PEO block lengths, PEO-PHB-PEO(2000-810-2000) and PEO-PHB-PEO(5000-780-5000), was studied with dynamic and static light scattering (DLS and SLS), in combination with fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of polymeric micelles by the two PEO-PHB-PEO triblock copolymers was confirmed with fluorescence technique and TEM. DLS analysis showed that the hydrodynamic radius (R(h)) of the monodistributed polymeric micelles increased with an increase in PEO block length. The relative thermostability of the triblock copolymer micelles was studied by SLS and DLS at different temperatures. The aggregation number and the ratio of the radius of gyration over hydrodynamic radius were found to be independent of temperature, probably due to the strong hydrophobicity of the PHB block. The combination of DLS and SLS studies indicated that the polymeric micelles were composed of a densely packed core of hydrophobic PHB blocks and a corona shell formed by hydrophilic PEO blocks. The aggregation numbers were found to be approximately 53 for PEO-PHB-PEO(2000-810-2000) micelles and approximately 37 for PEO-PHB-PEO(5000-780-5000) micelles. The morphology of PEO-PHB-PEO spherical micelles determined by DLS and SLS measurements was further confirmed by TEM.  相似文献

A series of novel triblock copolymers of poly(stearyl methacrylate)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(stearyl methacrylate) (PSMA-b-PNIPAAm-b-PSMA) with different molecular weights was synthesized through carboxyl-terminated trithiocarbonates as a highly efficient RAFT agent via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The resultant polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and GPC. By varying the organic solvent used in the self-assembly procedure and adjusting the copolymer composition, multiple morphologies ranging from vesicles and core-shell spherical aggregates with different dimensions to pearl-necklace-like aggregates were obtained. The aggregates showed thermoresponsive and pH-responsive properties through the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAm and the two carboxyl end groups of the copolymer.  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers containing β‐lactam groups on the polyisoprene block were synthesized from poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (IEO) diblock copolymer precursors, prepared by anionic polymerization. β‐Lactam functionalization was achieved via reaction of the polyisoprene (PI) block with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and subsequent reduction. The resulting block copolymers were molecularly characterized by SEC, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopies and DSC. Functionalization was found to proceed in high yields, altering the solubility properties of the PI block and those of the functionalized diblocks. Hydrogen bond formation is assumed to be responsible for the decreased crystallinity of the poly(ethylene oxide) block (PEO) in the bulk state as indicated by DSC measurements. The self‐assembly behavior of the β‐lactam functionalized poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) copolymers (LIEO) in aqueous solutions was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), static light scattering (SLS), fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nearly spherical loose aggregates were formed by the LIEO block copolymers, having lower aggregation numbers and higher cmc values compared to the IEO precursors, as a result of the increased polarity of the β‐lactam rings incorporated in the PI blocks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The adsorption of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) copolymers in aqueous solution on silica and glass surfaces has been investigated by flow microcalorimetry, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), surface forces, and complementary techniques. The studied copolymers consist of a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block of M(n) = 5000 and a hydrophobic polyester block of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) (PMCL) of M(n) in the 950-2200 range. Compared to homoPEO, the adsorption of the copolymers is significantly increased by the connection of PEO to an aliphatic polyester block. According to calorimetric experiments, the copolymers interact with the surface mainly through the hydrophilic block. At low surface coverage, the PEO block interacts with the surface such that both PEO and PCL chains are exposed to the aqueous solution. At high surface coverage, a dense copolymer layer is observed with the PEO blocks oriented toward the solution. The structure of the copolymer layer has been analyzed by neutron scattering using the contrast matching technique and by tapping mode atomic force microscopy. The experimental observations agree with the coadsorption of micelles and free copolymer chains at the interface.  相似文献

The paper provides new insights into the structure of Pt-containing diblock and triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP), using a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering (ASAXS). Parallel studies using methods contributing supplemental structural information allowed us to comprehensively characterize sophisticated polymer systems during metalation and to exclude possible ambiguity of the data interpretation of each of the methods. AFM and TEM make available the determination of sizes of the micelles and of the Pt-containing micelle cores, respectively, while a combination of XRD, TEM, and ASAXS reveals Pt-nanoparticle size distributions and locations along with the structural information about the polymer matrix. In addition, for the first time, ASAXS revealed the organization of Pt-nanoparticle-filled diblock and triblock copolymers in the bulk. The nanoparticle characteristics are mainly determined by the type of block copolymer system in which they are found: larger particles (2.0-3.0 nm) are formed in triblock copolymer micelles, while smaller ones (1.5-2.5 nm) are found in diblock copolymer micelles. This can be explained by facilitated intermicellar exchange in triblock copolymer systems. For both systems, Pt nanoparticles have narrow particle size distributions as a result of a strong interaction between the nanoparticle surface and the P4VP units inside the micelle cores. The pH of the medium mainly influences the particle location rather than the particle size. A structural model of Pt-nanoparticle clustering in the diblock PEO-b-P4VP and triblock P4VP-b-PEO-b-P4VP copolymers in the bulk was constructed ab initio from the ASAXS data. This model reveals that nearly spherical micellar cores of about 10 nm in diameter (filled with Pt nanoparticles) aggregate forming slightly oblate hollow bodies with an outer diameter of about 40 nm.  相似文献

We investigated, both experimentally and theoretically, the self-assembly behaviors of pH- and thermosensitive poly(L-glutamic acid)- b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA-b-PPO-b-PLGA) triblock copolymers in aqueous solution by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), circular dichroism (CD), and self-consistent field theory (SCFT) simulations. Vesicles were observed when the hydrophilic PLGA block length is shorter or the pH value of solution is lower. The vesicles were found to transform to spherical micelles when the PLGA block length increases or its conformation changes from helix to coil with increasing the pH value. In addition, increasing temperature gives rise to a decrease in the size of aggregates, which is related to the dehydration of the PPO segments at higher temperatures. The SCFT simulation results show that the vesicles transform to the spherical micelles with increasing the fraction or statistical length of A block in model ABA triblock copolymer, which corresponds to the increase in the PLGA length or its conformation change from helix to coil in experiments, respectively. The SCFT calculations also provide chain distribution information in the aggregates. On the basis of both experimental and SCFT results, the mechanism of the structure change of the PLGA- b-PPO- b-PLGA aggregates was proposed.  相似文献

The self-assembly of the biamphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(caprolactone)-b-poly(acrylic acid) into polymer vesicles is studied. The vesicles provide both biocompatibility and biodegradability. Moreover, the biamphiphilic nature of the triblock copolymer provides different surface properties in the interior and in the outer interface of the vesicles. Preparation of the aggregates by direct dissolution of the copolymer in a solution of albumin does not alter the morphology of the aggregates, and thus, they have the potential to immobilize protein molecules. Since a part of the protein is encapsulated in the interior of the vesicles, they can be used as nanocontainers. A further fraction of the protein is bound to the outer interface, which is primarily composed of the poly(acrylic acid) tails. Immobilization of protein on the outer interface can stabilize the colloidal particles and also provide them with a biofunctional component.  相似文献

Multisegmented poly(methacrylate)s were synthesized using one pot reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Initially, a series of triblock copolymers were synthesized with different ratios of trimethylsilyl methacrylate, di(ethylene oxide) methacrylate, and oligo(ethylene oxide) methacrylate, and different total polymer molecular weights. Additionally, a polymer containing seven distinct blocks of methacrylic monomers was synthesized in one pot. For the triblock copolymers, the trimethylsilyl group was subsequently hydrolyzed, and the self‐assembly of the triblock copolymer was studied in water, under different pH and thermal conditions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anionic polymerization of isoprene initiated by an alkyl lithium containing a silyl ether protected hydroxyl functionality followed by termination with ethylene oxide gave α,ω‐functionalized polyisoprene with narrow molecular weight distribution and prescribed molecular weight in high yield. Deprotection resulted in α,ω‐hydroxyl polyisoprene (HO‐PI‐OH) that was reacted with triethylaluminium to form the corresponding aluminium alkoxide macroinitiator. The macroinitiator was used for the controlled polymerization of lactide to yield polylactide‐block‐polyisoprene‐block‐polylactide triblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions and free of homopolymer (HO‐PI‐OH) contamination. Microphase separation in these novel triblock copolymers was confirmed by SAXS and DSC.  相似文献

Template synthesis of various morphological gold colloidal nanoparticles using a thermoresponsive and pH-responsive coordination triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) is studied. The template morphology of the thermoresponsive and pH-responsive coordination triblock copolymer, which can be tuned by simply changing the pH or temperature of the triblock copolymer aqueous solution, ranges from single chains to core-corona micelles and further to micellar clusters. Various morphological gold colloidal nanoparticles such as discrete gold nanoparticles, gold@polymer core-shell nanoparticles, and gold nanoparticle clusters are synthesized on the corresponding template of the triblock copolymer by first coordination with gold ions and then reduction by NaBH4. All three resultant gold colloidal nanoparticles are stable in aqueous solution, and their sizes are 2, 10, and 7 nm, respectively. The gold@polymer core-shell nanoparticles are thermoresponsive. The gold nanoparticle cluster has a novel structure, and each one holds about 40 single gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

We report the detailed characterization of micelles formed by two nonionic, amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymers. Poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(styrene)-b-1,2-poly(butadiene) (PEO-b-PS-b-PB) triblock copolymer "OSB" forms core-corona spherical micelles in aqueous solution, and the two hydrophobic blocks S and B are mixed homogeneously within the micelle core. PEO-b-PS-b-PB:C6F13I triblock copolymer "OSF" was prepared by selective fluorination of the B block in OSB with n-perfluorohexyl iodide. Fluorination of the B block induces internal segregation into an inner F core and an intermediate S shell. Furthermore, the strong incompatibility that results from fluorination drives a shape change into an oblate ellipsoid. These micellar morphologies are confirmed by combined light, neutron, and X-ray scattering measurements, as well as TEM imaging.  相似文献

Pluronic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers are grafted with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) by free radical polymerization of vinyl pyrrolidone with simultaneous chain transfer to the Pluronic in dioxane. This modified polymer has both thermal responsiveness and remarkable capacity to interact with a wide variety of hydrophilic and hydrophobic pharmaceutical agents which is very attractive for medical applications. The chemical structure of the graft copolymers was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Polymerization conditions such as initiators, feed ratio, and reaction times are studied to obtain the ideal graft copolymer.  相似文献

Aggregation of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer, Pluronic P123, is promoted in a room temperature ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN). A series of lyotropic mesophases including normal micellar cubic (I1), normal hexagonal (H1), lamellar (Lalpha), and reverse bicontinuous cubic (V2) are identified at 25 degrees C by using polarized optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. Such self-assembly behavior of P123 in EAN is similar to those observed in H2O or 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMim(+)][PF6(-)]) systems except for the presence of the V2 phase in EAN and the absence of the I 1 phase in [BMim(+)][PF6(-)]. This suggests that the ionic solvent of EAN plays similar roles as H2O and [BMim(+)][PF6(-)] during the aggregation process and solvates the PEO blocks through hydrogen-bond interaction. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonds are considered to form between the ethylammonium cations and oxygen atoms of the PEO blocks as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra of P123-EAN assemblies. This deduction is also consistent with the results from differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The additional V2 phase appearing in the P123-EAN system is attributed to the higher affinity for the relatively hydrophobic PPO blocks to EAN than to water, which might reduce the effective area of the solvophilic headgroup and increase the volume of the solvophobic part. The obtained results may help us to better understand the self-assembly process for amphiphilic block copolymers in protic solvents.  相似文献
