We investigate the phase jitter in long-haul optical transmission systems with periodic dispersion management and amplification. We compare different dispersion-managed soliton systems and a conventional soliton system having the same pulse width and path-averaged dispersion. Using the variational method, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the pulse parameters perturbed by amplifier noise and hence calculate the phase jitter. We verify the analytical results by numerically solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation using split-step Fourier algorithm. The results suggest that the reduction of nonlinear phase noise in dispersion-managed soliton systems is possible compared to a conventional soliton system. It is also revealed that the phase noise is enhanced in stronger dispersion-managed systems. We also explore the phase noise effect in dispersion-managed quasi-linear systems and find that phase jitter is mitigated in highly dispersive fibers.  相似文献

An 80-Gbit/s soliton can be transmitted over a cross-Pacific distance in a dense periodic fiber, even in the presence of higher-order effects. Such a dense dispersion-managed soliton is generally more stable and faces fewer mutual interactions than a conventional dispersion-managed soliton.  相似文献

The effect of group-delay ripples in dispersion-managed soliton communication systems that use chirped fiber gratings for dispersion compensation is studied. Using both a reduced model and direct numerical simulation, we find that dispersion-managed solitons exist even in the presence of large dispersion variation caused by group-delay ripples. The dispersion-managed solitons suppress the growth of intersymbol interference induced by the group-delay ripples.  相似文献

We report experimental evidence of antisymmetric solitons in a mode-locked fiber laser with a strong dispersion map. A dispersion-managed soliton breathes as it traverses the dispersion map, and the antisymmetric dispersion-managed soliton can be considered a tightly bound soliton pair with pi phase difference between the component solitons. The antisymmetric soliton is observed only at particular values of the net cavity dispersion.  相似文献

The variational method is employed to describe the basic properties of soliton parameters and to evaluate the timing jitter by considering multi-perturbations in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) dispersion-managed soliton (DMS) system. The bit error rates (BER) of different dispersion managed systems, which induced by the timing jitter are given and compared. The moment method is used to study the Gordon–Haus timing jitter of optical pulses in dispersion-managed communication systems with distributed amplification. Timing-jitter formulas are derived for the dispersion-managed soliton and chirped return-to-zero formats. These formulas are used to study the effects of dispersion compensation on timing jitter. Just as distributed amplification reduces the amount of amplifier noise, so also does it reduce the timing jitter caused by amplifier noise. For both transmission formats, one can reduce the timing jitter significantly by choosing the amount of dispersion compensation judiciously.  相似文献

The propagation of dispersion-managed solitons in optical fiber links with a random dispersion map has been studied. Two types of randomness are considered:random dispersion magnitudes and random lengths of the spans. By numerical simulations, disintegration of a soliton propagating in such an optical communication line is shown to occur. It is observed that the stability of the soliton propagation is affected more by modulations of the dispersion magnitudes of the spans than by modulations of the span lengths. Results of numerical simulations of the soliton breakup distance confirm theoretical predictions in the averaged dynamics limit.  相似文献

Recent progress on time-division multiplexed (TDM) and wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) soliton transmission is described, in which dispersion management plays an important role in increasing the power margin and the dispersion tolerance. The characteristics of the dispersion-managed soliton are compared with those of return to zero and nonreturn to zero pulses. With a small dispersion swing, the system can still be described as an average soliton using the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, while with a large dispersion swing, the solitonlike steady-state pulse becomes a chirped Gaussian pulse, in which the governing equation is closer to a linear Schrodinger equation with a parabolic potential well. We describe an in-line modulation scheme for up to 80 Gbit/s per channel and its two channel WDM transmission over 10 000 km. We investigate interactions between pulses in dispersion-managed multichannel wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton systems, using an improved variational approximation. We derive an expression for the timing jitter of a soliton owing to amplifier noise in dispersion-managed fiber systems. We show that the timing jitter is a function of the pulse width as well as of the chirp at the amplifier location and that it can be minimized by a proper choice of the amplifier position relative to the dispersion map.  相似文献

A dispersion-managed optical system with stepwise periodic variation of dispersion is studied in a strong dispersion map limit in the framework of the path-averaged Gabitov-Turitsyn equation. The soliton solution is obtained by analytical and numerical iteration of the path-averaged equation. An efficient numerical algorithm for finding a DM soliton shape is developed. The envelope of soliton oscillating tails is found to decay exponentially in time, and the oscillations are described by a quadratic law.  相似文献

We find that in a dispersion-managed fiber, in which the strength of the dispersion management is above some threshold, solitons can exist with normal average dispersion. When the normal average dispersion is below some limiting value there exist two soliton solutions with the same pulse duration and different pulse energies. When the normal average dispersion is above this limiting value, no soliton exists. Both higher-energy and lower-energy solitons are dynamically stable in the parameter range that we considered.  相似文献

We show experimentally and numerically that in high-speed strongly dispersion-managed standard fiber soliton systems nonlinear interactions limit the propagation distance. We present results that show that the effect of these interactions can be significantly reduced by appropriate location of the amplifier within the dispersion map. Using this technique, we have been able to extend the propagation distance of 10-Gbit/s 2(31)-1pseudorandom binary sequence soliton data to 16, 500km over standard fiber by use of dispersion compensation. To our knowledge this distance is the farthest transmission over standard fiber without active control ever reported, and it was achieved with the amplifier placed after the dispersion-compensating fiber in a recirculating loop.  相似文献

Dispersion-managed soliton propagation in short-period dispersion maps   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
We show through detailed numerical simulations that stable dispersion-managed solitons exist in short-period dispersion maps characterized by a dispersion-management period that is less than the amplifier spacing. These pulses show regular dynamics within the amplifier span and have greater energy enhancement than the conventional dispersion-managed soliton. We also show that greater interaction is obtained in this regime as a result of this increased enhancement.  相似文献
