In this paper we discuss a combinatorial problem involving graphs and matrices. Our problem is a matrix analogue of the classical problem of finding a system of distinct representatives (transversal) of a family of sets and relates closely to an extremal problem involving 1-factors and a long standing conjecture in the dimension theory of partially ordered sets. For an integer n ?1, let n denote the n element set {1,2,3,…, n}. Then let A be a k×t matrix. We say that A satisfies property P(n, k) when the following condition is satisfied: For every k-taple (x1,x2,…,xk?nk there exist k distinct integers j1,j2,…,jk so that xi= aii for i= 1,2,…,k. The minimum value of t for which there exists a k × t matrix A satisfying property P(n,k) is denoted by f(n,k). For each k?1 and n sufficiently large, we give an explicit formula for f(n, k): for each n?1 and k sufficiently large, we use probabilistic methods to provide inequalities for f(n,k).  相似文献

Inequalities are obtained forΣnim1P(A1) when P(A1A1) 1? i < j ? n are known. The result improves an elementary inequality due to Erdös, Neveu, Renyi and Zybrzyck.  相似文献

If A=(Aij)1?i,j?nB(X) is an upper triangular Banach space operator such that AiiAij=AijAjj for all 1?i?j?n, then A has SVEP or satisfies (Dunford's) condition (C) or (Bishop's) property (β) or (the decomposition) property (δ) if and only if Aii, 1?i?n, has the corresponding property.  相似文献

For a string A=a1an, a reversalρ(i,j), 1?i?j?n, transforms the string A into a string A=a1ai-1ajaj-1aiaj+1an, that is, the reversal ρ(i,j) reverses the order of symbols in the substring aiaj of A. In the case of signed strings, where each symbol is given a sign + or -, the reversal operation also flips the sign of each symbol in the reversed substring. Given two strings, A and B, signed or unsigned, sorting by reversals (SBR) is the problem of finding the minimum number of reversals that transform the string A into the string B.Traditionally, the problem was studied for permutations, that is, for strings in which every symbol appears exactly once. We consider a generalization of the problem, k-SBR, and allow each symbol to appear at most k times in each string, for some k?1. The main result of the paper is an O(k2)-approximation algorithm running in time O(n). For instances with , this is the best known approximation algorithm for k-SBR and, moreover, it is faster than the previous best approximation algorithm.  相似文献

Let H=(N,E,w) be a hypergraph with a node set N={0,1,…,n-1}, a hyperedge set E⊆2N, and real edge-weights w(e) for eE. Given a convex n-gon P in the plane with vertices x0,x1,…,xn-1 which are arranged in this order clockwisely, let each node iN correspond to the vertex xi and define the area AP(H) of H on P by the sum of the weighted areas of convex hulls for all hyperedges in H. For 0?i<j<k?n-1, a convex three-cut C(i,j,k) of N is {{i,…,j-1}, {j,…,k-1}, {k,…,n-1,0,…,i-1}} and its size cH(i,j,k) in H is defined as the sum of weights of edges eE such that e contains at least one node from each of {i,…,j-1}, {j,…,k-1} and {k,…,n-1,0,…,i-1}. We show that the following two conditions are equivalent:
AP(H)?AP(H) for all convex n-gons P.
cH(i,j,k)?cH(i,j,k) for all convex three-cuts C(i,j,k).
From this property, a polynomial time algorithm for determining whether or not given weighted hypergraphs H and H satisfy “AP(H)?AP(H) for all convex n-gons P” is immediately obtained.  相似文献

We examine a family of graphs called webs. For integers n ? 2 and k, 1 ? k ? 12n, the web W(n, k) has vertices Vn = {1, …, n} and edges {(i, j): j = i+k, …, i+n ? k, for i?Vn (sums mod n)}. A characterization is given for the vertex packing polyhedron of W(n, k) to contain a facet, none of whose projections is a facet for the lower dimensional vertex packing polyhedra of proper induced subgraphs of W(n, k). Simple necessary and sufficient conditions are given for W(n, k) to contain W(n′, k′) as an induced subgraph; these conditions are used to show that webs satisfy the Strong Perfect Graph Conjecture. Complements of webs are also studied and it is shown that if both a graph and its complement are webs, then the graph is either an odd hole or its complement.  相似文献

Let At(i, j) be the transition matrix at time t of a process with n states. Such a process may be called self-adjusting if the occurrence of the transition from state h to state k at time t results in a change in the hth row such that At+1(h, k) ? At(h, k). If the self-adjustment (due to transition hkx) is At + 1(h, j) = λAt(h, j) + (1 ? λ)δjk (0 < λ < 1), then with probability 1 the process is eventually periodic. If A0(i, j) < 1 for all i, j and if the self-adjustment satisfies At + 1(h, k) = ?(At(h, k)) with ?(x) twice differentiable and increasing, x < ?(x) < 1 for 0 ? x < 1,?(1) = ?′(1) = 1, then, with probability 1, lim At does not exist.  相似文献

Let k and n be positive integers, and let d(n, k) be the maximum density in {0, 1, 2,…, kn ? 1} of a set containing no arithmetic progression of k terms with first term a = Σaiki and common difference d = Σ?iki, where 0 ? ai ? k ? 1, ?i = 0 or 1, and ?i = 1 ? ai = 0. Setting βk = limn→∞d(n, k), we show that limk→∞βk is either 0 or 1.  相似文献

For a real, Hermitian, or quaternion normal random matrix Y with mean zero, necessary and sufficient conditions for a quadratic form Q(Y) to have a Wishart-Laplace distribution (the distribution of the difference of two independent central Wishart Wp(mi,Σ) random matrices) are given in terms of a certain Jordan algebra homomorphism ρ. Further, it is shown that {Qk(Y)} is independent Laplace-Wishart if and only if in addition to the aforementioned conditions, the images ρk(Σ+) of the Moore-Penrose inverse Σ+ of Σ are mutually orthogonal: ρk(Σ+)ρ?(Σ+)=0 for k?.  相似文献

One aspect of the inverse M-matrix problem can be posed as follows. Given a positive n × n matrix A=(aij) which has been scaled to have unit diagonal elements and off-diagonal elements which satisfy 0 < y ? aij ? x < 1, what additional element conditions will guarantee that the inverse of A exists and is an M-matrix? That is, if A?1=B=(bij), then bii> 0 and bij ? 0 for ij. If n=2 or x=y no further conditions are needed, but if n ? 3 and y < x, then the following is a tight sufficient condition. Define an interpolation parameter s via x2=sy+(1?s)y2; then B is an M-matrix if s?1 ? n?2. Moreover, if all off-diagonal elements of A have the value y except for aij=ajj=x when i=n?1, n and 1 ? j ? n?2, then the condition on both necessary and sufficient for B to be an M-matrix.  相似文献

Let A1,A2,…,An be finite sets such that Ai?Aj for all ij. Let F be an intersecting family consisting of sets contained in some Ai, i=1,2,…,n. Chvátal conjectured that among the largest intersecting families, there is always a star. In this paper, we obtain another proof of a result of Schönheim: If A1A2∩?∩An≠?, then the conjecture is true. We also prove that if AiAjAk = ? for all ijki or if the independent system satisfies a hereditary tree structure, then the conjecture is also true.  相似文献

It was proved by Erdös, Ko, and Radó (Intersection theorems for systems of finite sets, Quart. J. Math. Oxford Ser.12 (1961), 313–320.) that if A = {;A1,…, Al}; consists of k-subsets of a set with n > 2k elements such that AiAj ≠ ? for all i, j then l ? (k?1n?1). Schönheim proved that if A1, …, Al are subsets of a set S with n elements such that Ai ? Aj, AiAjø and AiAjS for all ij then l ? ([n2] ? 1n ? 1). In this note we prove a common strengthening of these results.  相似文献

We consider the problem of updating input-output matrices, i.e., for given (m,n) matrices A ? 0, W ? 0 and vectors u ? Rm, v?Rn, find an (m,n) matrix X ? 0 with prescribed row sums Σnj=1Xij = ui (i = 1,…,m) and prescribed column sums Σmi=1Xij = vj (j = 1,…,n) which fits the relations Xij = Aij + λiWij + Wij + Wijμj for all i,j and some λ?Rm, μ?Rn. Here we consider the question of existence of a solution to this problem, i.e., we shall characterize those matrices A, W and vectors u,v which lead to a solvable problem. Furthermore we outline some computational results using an algorithm of [2].  相似文献

Let A be an n × n normal matrix over C, and Qm, n be the set of strictly increasing integer sequences of length m chosen from 1,…,n. For α, β ? Qm, n denote by A[α|β] the submatrix obtained from A by using rows numbered α and columns numbered β. For k ? {0, 1,…, m} we write |αβ| = k if there exists a rearrangement of 1,…, m, say i1,…, ik, ik+1,…, im, such that α(ij) = β(ij), i = 1,…, k, and {α(ik+1),…, α(im) } ∩ {β(ik+1),…, β(im) } = ?. A new bound for |detA[α|β ]| is obtained in terms of the eigenvalues of A when 2m = n and |αβ| = 0.Let Un be the group of n × n unitary matrices. Define the nonnegative number

Let A be semidefinite hermitian. We conjecture that ρ0(A) ? ρ1(A) ? ··· ? ρm(A). These inequalities have been tested by machine calculations.  相似文献

Let A,B be n×n matrices with entries in an algebraically closed field F of characteristic zero, and let C=AB?BA. It is shown that if C has rank two and AiBjCk is nilpotent for 0?i, j?n?1, 1?k?2, then A, B are simultaneously triangularizable over F. An example is given to show that this result is in some sense best possible.  相似文献

We consider the problem of the identification of the time-varying matrix A(t) of a linear m-dimensional differential system y′ = A(t)y. We develop an approximation An,k = ∑nj ? 1cj{Y(tk + τj) Y?1(tk) ? I} to A(tk) for grid points tk = a + kh, k = 0,…, N using specified τj = θjh, 0 < θj < 1, j = 1, …, n, and show that for each tk, the L1 norm of the error matrix is O(hn). We demonstrate an efficient scheme for the evaluation of An,k and treat sample problems.  相似文献

A lower (upper) bound is given for the distribution of each dj, j = k + 1, …, p (j = 1, …, s), the jth latent root of AB?1, where A and B are independent noncentral and central Wishart matrices having Wp(q, Σ; Ω) with rank (Ω) ≤ k = p ? s and Wp(n, Σ), respectively. Similar bound are also given for the distributions of noncentral means and canonical correlations. The results are applied to obtain lower bounds for the null distributions of some multivariate test statistics in Tintner's model, MANOVA and canonical analysis.  相似文献
