Fluctuations in laser light, doubly scattered by brownian particles, were analysed by measuring the spectral noise power of the photodetector current. Scattering took place at two spatially separated systems of spherical particles. Analytic expressions for the field and intensity correlations are derived. The analytic expressions for the spectrum of the intensity fluctuations of the doubly scattered laser light demonstrate that the frequency dependence of the spectrum depends strongly of the geometry of the experimental arrangement. This is not the case for singly scattered light where in good approximation the spatial and temporal correlations can be separated analytically.Our measurements show that the noise spectrum of the doubly scattered radiation may have the same frequency dependence as the spectrum of the singly scattered light. However, there are conditions where the frequency dependence of the noise of the doubly scattered light diverges markedly from that of the singly scattered light.  相似文献

A simple model of a bad-cavity laser is presented based on Haken's master equation for N pumped two-level atoms in a cavity. Via adiabatic elimination of fast variables the whole photon statistics is solved analytically near threshold. It is shown that the second order coherence function g (2) (0) has a very different behavior near threshold for a bad-cavity laser compared to a good-cavity laser. The intensity fluctuation properties were experimentally studied for one mode among many oscillating longitudinal modes of an argon ion laser in a region sufficiently above threshold. The individual longitudinal mode fluctuated considerably even well above the threshold, while the laser intensity summed over all the longitudinal modes was observed stable. This fluctuation was found to be much larger than expected from the previous theoretical work by Arecchi and Ricca which did not consider the combination-tone polarization. The slowing-down and the increase of the fluctuation were observed when the excitation was lowered toward to its threshold value. The correlation time of the intensity fluctuation measured ranged from 0.7 μs to 20 μs depending on the oscillation condition.  相似文献

We have measured the photon number probability distribution of a laser in which the inversion is not slaved to the field. For the experiments, we have used a Nd(3+):YVO(4) laser which has a sufficiently slow inversion to allow measurement of the photon fluctuations at a time scale much shorter than that of the relaxation oscillations. The photon distribution function becomes highly nonstandard (i.e., non-Poissonian) in such a laser; this is consistent with available theoretical work. We point out the relevance of our results for the case of the semiconductor microlaser.  相似文献

Extending our work on the enhancement of photon antibunching we investigate the photon statistics after interference of a two-photon absorbed beam with a coherent one. The interference is calculated in the polarization picture but the equivalence to an interferometer is shown. We use the asymptotic behaviour during two-photon absorption and apply also approximate equations to study the system in the time domain before the asymptotic regime is reached.  相似文献

After a brief survey of number fluctuations, a topic of current interest in light scattering research, the theory is developed for a particular case of this type. A laser beam of Gaussian cross section illuminates a volume in which there is a fluctuating number of identical particles. For incoherent detection the scattered intensities are additive. The interest centers on the statistics of the total scattered intensity. Starting from the moment generating function, the distribution function of scattered intensity is computed using two different methods. In an experiment designed to test the computed distributions, agreement between theory and measurement is found if the mean particle number within the scattering volume exceeds 3. The experimental procedure is described and some difficulties are explained which so far did not permit application of the theory for particle numbers much below 3.  相似文献

Single-mode cavity laser light statistics is considered within the framework of rate equations. According to this approach, fluctuations are caused by jumps in active and detecting atoms. The algebra is simple, allowing analytical expressions for the intracavity Fano factor and the photocurrent spectral density to be obtained. Poissonian, quiet, and optical pumps are considered. The results are verified by comparison with Monte Carlo simulations. An essentially exhaustive investigation of sub-Poissonian light generation by classical laser schemes, two-mode lasers, and semiconductor lasers is proposed.  相似文献

The change of photon statistics of a nearly coherent single-mode light beam travelling through a saturable m-photon-amplifying or absorbing medium (m = 1, 2, …) is theoretically investigated. With the help of an approximation scheme valid for n ? 1, Δn2 ? n2 (n mean value and Δn2 variance of the photon number) an analytical expression is derived for the quantity Δn2/n. The results holds for arbitrary values of the initial population inversion and of the degree of saturation. It turns out that for both amplification and attenuation processes after sufficiently strong interaction Δn2/n tends to an asymptotic value.  相似文献

Quasi-phase-matched consecutive three-frequency interactions between waves with nonmultiple frequencies are considered. The quantum theory of parametric amplification is developed in the approximation of an undepleted low-frequency pump field in the Heisenberg representation. It is shown that, with a certain choice of quasi-phase-matching orders, the regime of exponential increase in the mean number of photons of interacting waves can be realized. In this case, the photon statistics of generated waves is super-Poissonian one. The correlation of fluctuations of numbers of photons with different frequencies is also considered.  相似文献

There is a simple relationship between the photon statistics in resonance fluorescence and the statistics of the momentum transferred to an atom by a plane traveling wave. We use this relation and the theory of atomic motion in resonant radiation to derive expressions for the mean <n> and the variance <(Δn)2> of the number of photons emitted in a given time by a two-level atom in a coherent exciting field. We find, in addition to the sub-poissonian statistics [<(Δn)2> less than <n>] previously reported for the case of resonant excitation, that super-poissonian photon statistics [<(Δn)2> greater than <n>] occur in resonance fluorescence for certain off-resonance cases. It is suggested that the sub-poissonian and the super-poissonian emission statistics might be demonstrated in a simple photodeflection experiment.  相似文献

The distribution function of the scattered radiation intensity is calculated in the approximation of the basic polarization modes. In such an approximation, the distribution function is represented in terms of the degree of polarization of the initially circularly and linearly polarized waves transmitted by the sample. The effect of the difference of the decay rates for the circular and linear polarization modes on the statistics of the light waves that are multiply scattered in the medium with large inhomogeneities is analyzed.  相似文献
