Many parallel iterative algorithms for solving symmetric, positive definite problems proceed by solving in each iteration, a number of independent systems on subspaces. The convergence of such methods is determined by the spectrum of the sums of orthogonal projections on those subspaces, while the convergence of a related sequential method is determined by the spectrum of the product of complementary projections. It is shown that a minimal graph with a normal at infinity is in a-priori bounded vertical distance from its approximating halfcatenoid. The lack of a general maximum principle for biharmonic equations suggests to study under which boundary conditions the positivity preserving property holds. We show that this property holds in general domains for suitable linear combinations of Dirichlet and Navier boundary conditions. The spectrum of this operator exhibits some unexpected features: radial data may generate nonradial solutions. These boundary conditions are also of some interest in semilinear equations, since they enable us to give explicit radial singular solutions to fourth order Gelfand-type problems. 相似文献

The time-independent superlinear Schrödinger equation with spatially periodic and positive potential admits sign-changing two-bump solutions if the set of positive solutions at the minimal nontrivial energy level is the disjoint union of period translates of a compact set. Assuming a reflection symmetric potential we give a condition on the equation that ensures this splitting property for the solution set. We consider the semi-linear elliptic equation Δu+f(x,u)+g(|x|)x·∇u=0, in some exterior region of Rn,n?3. It is shown that if f depends radially on its first argument and is nonincreasing in its second, boundary conditions force the unique solution to be radial. We study the uniqueness of solutions with a transonic shock in a duct in a class of transonic shock solutions, which are not necessarily small perturbations of the background solution, for steady potential flow. We prove that, for given uniform supersonic upstream flow in a straight duct, there exists a unique uniform pressure at the exit of the duct such that a transonic shock solution exists in the duct, which is unique modulo translation. For any other given uniform pressure at the exit, there exists no transonic shock solution in the duct. This is equivalent to establishing a uniqueness theorem for a free boundary problem of a partial differential equation of second order in a bounded or unbounded duct. The proof is based on the maximum/comparison principle and a judicious choice of special transonic shock solutions as a comparison solution. 相似文献

Initial data for atmospheric multi-scale models need to be adjusted in order to ensure small amplitudes of high-frequency oscillations. Different adjustment methods lead to balance conditions in the form of time-independent partial differential systems with appropriate boundary conditions. One of the issues of such systems is a violation of the ellipticity conditions in a part of the problem domain. In this study we present the ellipticity conditions for balance equations based on diagnostic divergence relation with different levels of complexity and explore the existence of non-elliptic regions in the gridded fields of the atmospheric analysis data. It is shown that more physically justifiable balance equations are associated with much sparser and less intensive non-elliptic regions. The obtained results confirm Kasahara’s assumption that ellipticity conditions are violated in the actual atmospheric fields essentially due to approximations made under deriving balance equations. 相似文献

This paper is devoted to the study of traveling fronts of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic advection in the whole plane R2. We are interested in curved fronts satisfying some “conical” conditions at infinity. We prove that there is a minimal speed c∗ such that curved fronts with speed c exist if and only if c≥c∗. Moreover, we show that such curved fronts are decreasing in the direction of propagation, that is, they are increasing in time. We also give some results about the asymptotic behaviors of the speed with respect to the advection, diffusion and reaction coefficients. 相似文献

We introduce a class of nearest-neighbor integer random walks in random and non-random media, which includes excited random walks considered in the literature. At each site the random walker has a drift to the right, the strength of which depends on the environment at that site and on how often the walker has visited that site before. We address the analysis of a nonlinear and degenerating PDE system, proposed by M. Frémond for modelling phase transitions in viscoelastic materials subject to thermal effects. The system features an internal energy balance equation, governing the evolution of the absolute temperature ?, an evolution equation for the phase change parameter χ, and a stress-strain relation for the displacement variable u. The main novelty of the model is that the equations for χ and u are coupled in such a way as to take into account the fact that the properties of the viscous and of the elastic parts influence the phase transition phenomenon in different ways. However, this brings about an elliptic degeneracy in the equation for u which needs to be carefully handled.In this paper, we first prove a local (in time) well-posedness result for (a suitable initial-boundary value problem for) the above mentioned PDE system, in the (spatially) three-dimensional setting. Secondly, we restrict to the one-dimensional case, in which, for the same initial-boundary value problem, we indeed obtain a global well-posedness theorem. 相似文献

Using a combination of several methods, such as variational methods, the sub and supersolutions method, comparison principles and a priori estimates, we study existence, multiplicity, and the behavior with respect to λ of positive solutions of p-Laplace equations of the form −Δpu=λh(x,u), where the nonlinear term has p-superlinear growth at infinity, is nonnegative, and satisfies h(x,a(x))=0 for a suitable positive function a. In order to manage the asymptotic behavior of the solutions we extend a result due to Redheffer and we establish a new Liouville-type theorem for the p-Laplacian operator, where the nonlinearity involved is superlinear, nonnegative, and has positive zeros. 相似文献
