A water molecule in the vicinity of a hydrophobic surface forms fewer hydrogen bonds than a bulk molecule because the surface restricts the space available for other water molecules necessary for its hydrogen-bonding. In this vicinity, the number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule depends on its distance to the surface. Considering the number of hydrogen bonds per bulk water molecule (available experimentally) as the only reference quantity, we propose an improved probabilistic approach to water hydrogen-bonding that allows one to obtain an analytic expression for this dependence. (The original version of this approach [Y. S. Djikaev and E. Ruckenstein, J. Chem. Phys. 130, 124713 (2009)] provides the number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule in the vicinity of a hydrophobic surface as an average over all possible locations and orientations of the molecule.) This function (the number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule versus its distance to a hydrophobic surface) can be used to develop analytic models for the effect of hydrogen-bonding on the hydration of hydrophobic particles and their solvent-mediated interaction. Presenting a model for the latter, we also examine the temperature effect on the solvent-mediated interaction of two parallel hydrophobic plates.  相似文献

The dipole moment of the gas phase water monomer is 1.85 D. When solvated in bulk water, the dipole moment of an individual water molecule is observed to be enhanced to the much larger value of 2.9 +/- 0.6 D. To understand the origin of this dipole moment enhancement, the effective fragment potential (EFP) method is used to solvate an ab initio water molecule to predict the dipole moments for various cluster sizes. The dipole moment as a function of cluster size, nH 2O, is investigated [for n = 6-20 (even n), 26, 32, 41, and 50]. Localized charge distributions are used in conjunction with localized molecular orbitals to interpret the dipole moment enhancement. These calculations suggest that the enhancement of the dipole moment originates from the decrease of the angle between the dipole vectors of the lone pairs on oxygen as the number of hydrogen bonds to that oxygen increases. Thus, the decreased angle, and the consequent increase in water dipole moment, is most likely to occur in environments with a larger number of hydrogen bonds, such as the center of a cluster of water molecules.  相似文献

The existence of a transitional size regime where preferential stabilization alternates between "all-surface" (all atoms on the surface of a cluster) and "internally solvated" (one water molecule at the center of the cluster, fully solvated) configurations with the addition or the removal of a single water molecule, predicted earlier with the flexible, polarizable (many-body) Thole-type model interaction potential (TTM2-F), has been confirmed from electronic structure calculations for (H2O)n, n = 17-21. The onset of the appearance of the first "interior" configuration in water clusters occurs for n = 17. The observed structural alternation between interior (n = 17, 19, 21) and all-surface (n = 18, 20) global minima in the n = 17-21 cluster regime is accompanied by a corresponding spectroscopic signature, namely, the undulation in the position of the most redshifted OH stretching vibrations according to the trend: interior configurations exhibit more redshifted OH stretching vibrations than all-surface ones. These most redshifted OH stretching vibrations form distinct groups in the intramolecular region of the spectra and correspond to localized vibrations of donor OH stretches that are connected to neighbors via "strong" (water dimer-like) hydrogen bonds and belong to a water molecule with a "free" OH stretch.  相似文献

The adsorption of 1-octanol at the free water surface has been investigated by Monte Carlo computer simulation. Six different systems, built up by an aqueous and a vapor phase, the latter also containing various number of octanol molecules, have been simulated. The number of the octanol molecules has been chosen in such a way that the octanol surface density varies in a broad range, between 0.27 and 7.83 micromol/m(2) in the six systems simulated. For reference, the interfacial system containing bulk liquid octanol in the apolar phase has also been simulated. The results have shown that the formation of hydrogen bonds between the interfacial water and adsorbed octanol molecules is of key importance in determining the properties of the adsorbed layer. At low octanol surface concentration values all the octanol molecules are strongly (i.e., by hydrogen bonds) bound to the aqueous phase, whereas their interaction with each other is negligibly small. Hence, they are preferentially oriented in such a way that their own binding energy (and thus their own free energy) is minimized. In this preferred orientation the O-H bond of the octanol molecule points flatly toward the aqueous phase, declining by about 30 degrees from the interfacial plane, irrespectively from whether the octanol molecule is the H-donor or the H-acceptor partner in the hydrogen bond. Hence, in its preferred orientation the octanol molecule can form at least two low energy hydrogen bonds with water: one as a H-donor and another one as a H-acceptor. Moreover, the preferred orientation of the hydrogen bonded water partners is close to one of the two preferred interfacial water alignments, in which the plane of the water molecule is parallel with the interface. When increasing the octanol surface density, the water surface gets saturated with hydrogen bonded octanols, and hence any further octanol molecule can just simply condense to the layer of the adsorbed octanols. The surface density value at which this saturation occurs is estimated to be about 1.7 micromol/m(2). Above this surface density value the hydrogen bonded octanols and their water partners are oriented in such a way that the number of the water-octanol hydrogen bonds is maximized. Hence, the preferred alignment of the O...O axes of these hydrogen bonds is perpendicular to the interface. This orientation is far from the optimal alignment of the individual octanol molecules, which is also reflected in the observed fact that, unlike in the case of many other adsorbents, the average molecular binding energy of the adsorbed octanol molecules increases (i.e., becomes less negative) with increasing octanol surface density.  相似文献

A new Hirshfeld partitioning of cluster polarizability into intrinsic polarizabilities and charge delocalization contributions is presented. For water clusters, density-functional theory calculations demonstrate that the total polarizability of a water molecule in a cluster depends upon the number and type of hydrogen bonds the molecule makes with its neighbors. The intrinsic contribution to the molecular polarizability is transferable between water molecules displaying the same H-bond scheme in clusters of different sizes, and geometries, while the charge delocalization contribution also depends on the cluster size. These results could be used to improve the existing force fields.  相似文献

The potentials of mean force (PMFs) were determined for systems involving formation of nonpolar dimers composed of methane, ethane, propane, isobutane, and neopentane, respectively, in water, using the TIP3P water model, and in vacuo. A series of umbrella-sampling molecular dynamics simulations with the AMBER force field was carried out for each pair in either water or in vacuo. The PMFs were calculated by using the weighted histogram analysis method (WHAM). The shape of the PMFs for dimers of all five nonpolar molecules is characteristic of hydrophobic interactions with contact and solvent-separated minima and desolvation maxima. The positions of all these minima and maxima change with the size of the nonpolar molecule, that is, for larger molecules they shift toward larger distances. The PMF of the neopentane dimer is similar to those of other small nonpolar molecules studied in this work, and hence the neopentane dimer is too small to be treated as a nanoscale hydrophobic object. The solvent contribution to the PMF was also computed by subtracting the PMF determined in vacuo from the PMF in explicit solvent. The molecular surface area model correctly describes the solvent contribution to the PMF together with the changes of the height and positions of the desolvation barrier for all dimers investigated. The water molecules in the first solvation sphere of the dimer are more ordered compared to bulk water, with their dipole moments pointing away from the surface of the dimer. The average number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule in this first hydration shell is smaller compared to that in bulk water, which can be explained by coordination of water molecules to the hydrocarbon surface. In the second hydration shell, the average number of hydrogen bonds is greater compared to bulk water, which can be explained by increased ordering of water from the first hydration shell; the net effect is more efficient hydrogen bonding between the water molecules in the first and second hydration shells.  相似文献

The microscopic behaviors of a water layer on different hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces of well ordered self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The SAMs consist of 18-carbon alkyl chains bound to a silicon(111) substrate, and the characteristic of its surface is tuned from hydrophobic to hydrophilic by using different terminal functional groups ( CH 3 , COOH). In the simulation, the properties of water membranes adjacent to the surfaces of SAMs were reported by comparing pure water in mobility, structure, and orientational ordering of water molecules. The results suggest that the mobility of water molecules adjacent to hydrophilic surface becomes weaker and the molecules have a better ordering. The distribution of hydrogen bonds indicates that the number of water-water hydrogen bonds per water molecule tends to be lower. However, the mobility of water molecules and distribution of hydrogen bonds of a water membrane in hydropho- bic system are nearly the same as those in pure water system. In addition, hydrogen bonds are mainly formed between the hydroxyl of the COOH group and water molecules in a hydrophilic system, which is helpful in understanding the structure of interfacial water.  相似文献

Various properties of water clusters in the n = 2–34 size regime with the change of cluster size have been systemically explored based on the newly developed flexible-body and charge-fluctuating ABEEM/MM water potential model. The ABEEM/MM water model is to take ABEEM charges of all atoms, bonds, and lone-pairs of water molecules into the intermolecular electrostatic interaction term in molecular mechanics. The computed correlating properties characterizing water clusters (H2O) n (n = 2–34) include optimal structures, structural parameters, ABEEM charge distributions, binding energies, hydrogen bonds, dipole moments, and so on. The study of optimal structures shows that the ABEEM/MM model can correctly predict the following important structural features, such as the transition from two-dimensional (from dimer to pentamer) to three-dimensional (for clusters larger than the hexamer) structures at hexamer region, the transition from cubes to cages at dodecamer (H2O)12, the transition from all-surface (all water molecules on the surface of the cluster) to one water-centered (one water molecule at the center of the cluster, fully solvated) structures at (H2O)17, the transition from one to two internal molecules in the cage at (H2O)33, and so on. The first three structural transitions are in good agreement with those obtained from previous work, while the fourth transition is different from that identified by Hartke. Subsequently, a systematic investigation of structural parameters, ABEEM charges, energetic properties, and dipole moments of water clusters with increasing cluster size can provide important reference for describing the objective trait of hydrogen bonds in water cluster system, and also provide a strong impetus toward understanding how the water clusters approach the bulk limit.  相似文献

The dewetting transitions of two hydrophobic plates immersed in pure water, aqueous ethanol solutions with concentrations from 25% to 90%, and pure ethanol were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, where the dewetting transition was analogous to a first-order phase transition from liquid to vapor. It was found that the dewetting transitions occurred except that in the pure ethanol system. Although the ethanol molecules prefer to locate in the vicinity of the two plates, the inter-plate region is unfavorable for water molecules, due to losing more than one hydrogen bond. Moreover, each inter-plate water molecule forms hydrogen bonds on average with about two ethanol molecules. These intermolecular hydrogen bonds cause water and ethanol to cooperatively fill or exit the inter-plate region. Thus, water molecules play a more important role in the inter-plate filling/empty process, and induce the ethanol dewetting transition. Our results provide insight into the effect of water on the ethanol dewetting phenomena.  相似文献

The study concerns the dynamics of a network of hydrogen bonds in small water clusters (on the example of hexamer and octamer clusters). The numerical experiment is carried out with the molecular dynamics method using two analytical rigid potentials TIP4P and TIP5P. According to the obtained results, the criteria of phase transitions provided by the cluster theory are not reliable enough in the case of small water clusters. This is testified by the distributions of potential energies of individual molecules in the clusters. It is shown that the appearance of several peaks in these distributions reflects the number of hydrogen bonds between the molecule and other molecules of the cluster.  相似文献

A combination of neutron diffraction augmented with isotopic substitution and computer modeling using empirical potential structure refinement has been used to extract detailed structural information for L-glutamic acid dissolved in 2 M NaOH solution. This work shows that the tetrahedral hydrogen bonding network in water is severely disrupted by the addition of glutamic acid and NaOH, with the number of water-water hydrogen bonds being reduced from 1.8 bonds per water molecule in pure water to 1.4 bonds per water molecule in the present solution. In the glutamic acid molecule, each carboxylate oxygen atom forms an average of three hydrogen bonds with the surrounding water solvent with one of these hydrogens being shared between the two oxygen atoms on each carboxylate group, while each amine hydrogen forms a single hydrogen bond with the surrounding water solvent. Additionally, the average conformation of the glutamic acid molecules in these solutions is extracted.  相似文献

The adsorption layer of the nonionic surfactant triethoxy monooctylether C8E3 has been investigated at the free water surface by means of both experimental and computer simulation methods. The surface tension of the aqueous solution of C8E3 has been measured by pendant drop shape analysis in the entire concentration range in which C8E3 is soluble in water. The data obtained from these measurements are used to derive the adsorption isotherm. The critical micellar concentration and the surface excess concentration of the saturated adsorption layer are found to be 7.48 mM and 4.03 micromol/m2, respectively, the latter value corresponding to the average area per molecule of 41 A2. In order to analyze the molecular level structure of the unsaturated adsorption layer, Monte Carlo simulations have been performed at four different surface concentration values, i.e., 0.68, 1.36, 2.04, and 2.72 micromol/m2, respectively. It has been found that the water surface is already almost fully covered at the lowest surface density value investigated, and the adsorbed molecules show a strong preference for lying parallel with the interface in elongated conformations. No sign of the penetration of the hydrophilic triethoxy headgroups into the aqueous phase to any extent has been observed. With increasing surface densities the preferential orientation of the apolar octyl tails gradually turns from lying parallel with the interface to pointing toward the vapor phase by their CH3 end, whereas the conformation of the adsorbed molecules becomes gradually less elongated. Both of these changes lead to the increase of the number of C8E3 molecules being in a direct contact (i.e., forming hydrogen bonds) with water. However, the increasing number of the C8E3 molecules hydrogen bonded to water is found to be accompanied by the weakening of this binding, i.e., the decrease of both the number of hydrogen bonds a bound C8E3 molecule forms with water and the magnitude of the average binding energy of the adsorbed C8E3 molecules.

An ab initio quantum mechanical charge field molecular dynamics simulation was carried out for one methanol molecule in water to analyze the structure and dynamics of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups. It is found that water molecules around the methyl group form a cage-like structure whereas the hydroxyl group acts as both hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, thus forming several hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The dynamic analyses correlate well with the structural data, evaluated by means of radial distribution functions, angular distribution functions, and coordination number distributions. The overall ligand mean residence time, τ identifies the methanol molecule as structure maker. The relative dynamics data of hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl of methanol and water molecules prove the existence of both strong and weak hydrogen bonds. The results obtained from the simulation are in excellent agreement with the experimental results for dilute solution of CH(3)OH in water. The overall hydration shell of methanol consists in average of 18 water molecules out of which three are hydrogen bonded.  相似文献

A molecular dynamics simulation of water molecules through a Au nanotube with a diameter of 20 A at bulk densities 0.8, 1, and 1.2 gcm(3) has been carried out. The water molecules inside a nanoscale tube, unlike those inside a bulk tube, have a confined effect. The interaction energy of the Au nanotube wall has a direct influence on the distribution of water molecules inside the Au tube in that the adsorption of the water molecules creates shell-like formations of water. Moreover, the high number of adsorbed molecules has already achieved saturation at the wall of the Au nanotube at three bulk densities. This work compares the distribution percentage profiles of hydrogen bonds for different regions inside the tube. The structural characteristics of water molecules inside the tube have also been studied. The results reveal that the numbers of hydrogen bonds per water molecule influence the orientational order parameter q. In addition, the phenomenon of a group of molecules bonded inside the tube can be observed as the number of hydrogen bonds increase.  相似文献

Infrared laser action spectroscopy is used to characterize divalent calcium ions solvated by up to 69 water molecules. The spectrum for Ca(2+)(H2O)12 indicates that in the predominant structure, eight inner-shell water molecules solvate the metal ion and donate one hydrogen bond to one of four second-shell, double-acceptor water molecules. Eight-coordinate solvation is consistent with results from many condensed-phase studies, and contrasts with results for smaller gas-phase clusters that are most consistent with six-coordinate solvation. Each water molecule in this structure of Ca(2+)(H2O)12 coordinates with two other members of the cluster. With increasing cluster size, the number of two-coordinate water molecules decreases, whereas that of three-coordinate water molecules increases. The number of one-coordinate water molecules increases until n approximately 18, but they are essentially depleted by n approximately = 30. Spectra of the largest clusters, which have effective concentrations of divalent calcium that are less than 1 M, exhibit only subtle changes with increasing cluster size. The bonded-OH regions of these spectra are similar to, but blue-shifted from that of bulk water, whereas the free-OH regions are well-resolved and indicate that the surfaces of these clusters are well-structured. These results comprise the most extensive vibrational spectroscopic study yet performed on metal ion hydration in the gas phase and provide insights into metal ion solvation in bulk and interfacial environments.  相似文献

Large molecular clusters can be considered as intermediate states between gas and condensed phases, and information about them can help us understand condensed phases. In this paper, ab initio quantum mechanical methods have been used to examine clusters formed of methanol and water molecules. The main goal was to obtain information about the intermolecular interactions and the structure of methanol/water clusters at the molecular level. The large clusters (CH(4)O...(H(2)O)(12) and H(2)O...(CH(4)O)(10)) containing one molecule of one component (methanol or water) and many (12, 10) molecules of the other component were considered. M?ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) was used in the calculations. Several representative cluster geometries were optimized, and nearest-neighbor interaction energies were calculated for the geometries obtained in the first step. The results of the calculations were compared to the available experimental information regarding the liquid methanol/water mixtures and to the molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, and good agreement was found. For the CH(4)O...(H(2)O)(12) cluster, it was shown that the molecules of water can be subdivided into two classes: (i) H bonded to the central methanol molecule and (ii) not H bonded to the central methanol molecule. As expected, these two classes exhibited striking energy differences. Although they are located almost the same distance from the carbon atom of the central methanol molecule, they possess very different intermolecular interaction energies with the central molecule. The H bonding constitutes a dominant factor in the hydration of methanol in dilute aqueous solutions. For the H(2)O...(CH(4)O)(10) cluster, it was shown that the central molecule of water has almost three H bonds with the methanol molecules; this result differs from those in the literature that concluded that the average number of H bonds between a central water molecule and methanol molecules in dilute solutions of water in methanol is about two, with the water molecules being incorporated into the chains of methanol. In contrast, the present predictions revealed that the central water molecule is not incorporated into a chain of methanol molecules, but it can be the center of several (2-3) chains of methanol molecules. The molecules of methanol, which are not H bonded to the central water molecule, have characteristics similar to those of the methane molecules around a central water molecule in the H(2)O...(CH(4))(10) cluster. The ab initio quantum mechanical methods employed in this paper have provided detailed information about the H bonds in the clusters investigated. In particular, they provided full information about two types of H bonds between water and methanol molecules (in which the water or the methanol molecule is the proton donor), including information about their energies and lengths. The average numbers of the two types of H bonds in the CH(4)O...(H(2)O)(12) and H(2)O...(CH(4)O)(10) clusters have been calculated. Such information could hardly be obtained with the simulation methods.  相似文献

The dynamics of water near the polar headgroups of surfactants in a monolayer adsorbed at the air/water interface is likely to play a decisive role in determining the physical behavior of such organized assemblies. We have carried out an atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of a monolayer of the anionic surfactant sodium bis(2-ethyl-1-hexyl) sulfosuccinate (aerosol-OT or AOT) adsorbed at the air/water interface. The simulation is performed at room temperature with a surface coverage of that at the critical micelle concentration (78 Angstrom(2)/molecule). Detailed analyses of the lifetime dynamics of surfactant-water (SW) and water-water (WW) hydrogen bonds at the interface have been carried out. The nonexponential hydrogen bond lifetime correlation functions have been analyzed by using the formalism of Luzar and Chandler, which allowed identification of the bound states at the interface and quantification of the dynamic equilibrium between bound and quasi-free water molecules, in terms of time-dependent relaxation rates. It is observed that the water molecules present in the first hydration layer form strong hydrogen bonds with the surfactant headgroups and hence have longer lifetimes. Importantly, it is found that the overall relaxation of the SW hydrogen bonds is faster for those water molecules which form two hydrogen bonds with the surfactant headgroups than those forming one such hydrogen bond. Equally interestingly, it is further noticed that water molecules beyond the first hydration layer form weaker hydrogen bonds than pure bulk water.  相似文献
